Carolina went 2 and 14 this past season earning the number one pick in the 2011 draft. With that pick, they decided to draft their second big name quarterback within two years… the man never lacking in confidence, confident Cam Newton. I think I said a lot already about my feelings concerning Cam and his NFL future but the Panthers felt Different.
I know wonder what the future holds for once quarterback of the future Jimmy Clausen. The Notre Dame graduate who went back to school this past summer to finish his degree is now no longer viewed as the answer; not that he ever was.
John fox former head coach of the lowly Panthers has left town but it’s important to remember that he wasn’t a big fan of young Clausen and never wanted to draft him.
So Jimmy Clausen was tossed in the fire replacing disappointing Matt Moore and tasked with leading a team with many holes, faced with injuries in almost all areas on the field.
So their answer was to draft another signal caller… the problem is that Carolina has many holes on offense and defense. But I guess the formula will remain the same, run the two headed monster of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, play great defense which they have been known for under former head coach Fox.
Carolina’s offense was depleted this past season and they get a lot of players back, but half the roster is facing free agency and given the state of the NFL right now, nothing will be resolved anytime soon…we are and will remain in a wait and see approach until the league and players get their act together.
Sundays are no fun without football as we all know…in fact bye weeks are tough enough, so imagine the off season.
Back to the topic…I don’t know what will become of Clausen or any of the other veterans on the roster but a lot is riding on the development of Cam Newton, in some ways Clausen’s future also depends on this future “Icon.”
I believe Clausen has a chance to be a good quarterback in the NFL but his window might have closed in Carolina, as limited as his chances might have been. But then again that is the nature of the NFL; you make the most of your opportunities when they flash in front of you.
The new head coach has said that there will be open competition at quarterback but I wonder how fair this competition will be. Carolina doesn’t want to throw Cam into the fire as they did with Clausen, maybe that will open the door for last year’s pick and allow him to audition for his next opportunity.
At this point I think that might be his best option.
