The way to understand film festivals and quizzes is challenging. Most of new developments in technology are within reach of everybody and, thanks to this democratization process; mass people have now the tools to make their own audio-visual projects.
For that reason, the number of home film festivals, aimed at mass people, are increasing year after year. People use any kind of camera to film their movies for example, a camera of any mobile device. These movies usually last few minutes and they are based on an original and specific idea because the tools they use limit the integration of amazing special effects, complicated plots or wonderful sound tracks. So, what do jury assess in these home film festivals? Talent and ingenuity are the most important characteristics in all of these quizzes. Mass people don’t have so much money to spend on making their audio-visual projects, but they can film movies based on incredible histories.
One of the most famous mobile film festivals is Mobile Screen fest. It’s an Australian quizzes which was a great success last year and it appears that this new edition will bring the same success. However, this is not the only mobile film festival, there are a lot of interesting quizzes all over the world for example, Toronto Mobifest, Mobile Film Festival or Iberminuto (both of them are Spanish).
On the other hand, there is also other type of home-film festival where contestants make films which will be using for big brands (these brands are usually the ones that finance these festivals) and act like sponsors for their adverts. Mofilm is one of the best examples of this type of quizzes. As they said in their web page, this American festival helps “aspiring filmmakers create videos for big brands and social causes”.
Apparently, featured length films have a new rival: mobile short-movies. However, it doesn’t mean that traditional film festival will disappear soon, but also, in fact, mass people can participate or create their own featured length films thanks to new technologies. For example, on July 2010, YouTube ask their users for filming and uploading a movie about their life. You Tube received over 80.000 short-films and only 26 of them were using to create a featured length, Life in a day, which was directed by Kevin McDonald (The last king of Scotland) and was opened in January 2011 at the Sundance festival (United State).
