While on vacation in Las Vegas, I had plenty of opportunities to visit critically acclaimed and popular restaurants, however a friend of mine told me that I needed to save the best for last, his recommendation- “The Top Of The world” an award winning revolving restaurant perched 800 feet atop the famed Stratosphere Casino & Resort. When first entering the elevator you are met by an exclusive guide who whisks you away in a high-speed elevator to an almost dizzying ear popping height. Upon arriving at the vestibule of the restaurant, it is there that you realize you are about experience a VIP moment that would be a delight to all of your senses and a promise of a fine meal, that would not disappoint.
The restaurant itself was a ring made up of 2 levels. Upstairs, were I was escorted was a bar lounge with comfortable plush seating and balcony view of the main dining area below. Soft live jazz music permeated the air. Fine wine from around the world, eclectic concoctions and fusion elixirs where readily available, along with “wet your appetite” hors d oeuvres.
A few moments later I again was ushered to my table on the main dining floor. The mesmerizing panoramic views of the entire shimmering city of Las Vegas through the wrap around floor to wall windows alone is worth the visit. The floor of the entire restaurant revolves around the top of this pinnacle. It takes 80 minutes for a full revolution and I intended to see every spectacular inch of it.
The ambiance was rich with subdued tones of elegance, crisp white tablecloths and Muted lights for intimacy
The menu boasts an impressive medley of American & European inspired entrees paired with equally sublime wine recommendations.
I eagerly started with the Baby Frisee salad and roasted red beets.
Frisee lettuce leaves tossed with sweet chunky roasted red beets, Maytag blue cheese, chewy Nueske bacon lardoons, crunchy garlic croutons and dressed with white wine Dijon vinaigrette.
Delicious, flavorful & refreshing, exceptionally appealing because of its different layers of texture. To add to that, I was pleasantly surprised at the hefty portion sizing. You certainly get your moneys worth.
My next course was the Colorado Rack of Lamb with herb lamb jus
Exquisitely succulent lamb rubbed with Mediterranean spices for robust flavour and roasted to perfection. I particularly noted that the meat was trimmed perfectly allowing enough fat to boost the flavour with out it being chewy.
If this had not been a refined restaurant I would have deigned to suck the bones. It was served along side crisp fingerling potatoes and fresh steamed al dente French green beans
The dessert menu was a heavenly sampling of miniature decadence. Designed so that you can customize your cravings. I selected a Chocolate Crème Brulee with a raspberry filling and crunchy caramelized dark chocolate sugar crust, a Plump Banana Bread Pudding served with a drizzle of warm caramel sauce, and a clever Cheesecake Lollipop of cookies and cream with vanilla sauce and Oreo cookies. Absolutely scrumptious.
The talented, creative & French Head chef, Claude Gaty who was so approachable and clearly had a passion for the fine art of gourmet cooking, helms the gastronomic cuisine of the restaurant. His repertoire includes cooking experiences from around the world such as Paris & Fiji with a heady mix of eclectic bold flavors and subtle desserts. To my enjoyment, Chef Gaty regaled me on his choices and ingredients of his most favourite dishes, his experiences with culinary gems of several restaurants from around the world and enlightened me about his continuing mission to revamp, hone and update the menu to stay fresh with the ever-changing palates of his customers.
The best of Las Vegas was saved for last. The “Top Of The World” Restaurant at the Stratosphere Resort and Casino should be at the top of your list, circled and starred. Tell them Karen Northover sent you and it will be an experience worth it weight in gold.
