Argentina, On Its Way To Legalize The Consumption of Some Drugs

Posted by: Estefania Herrera    Tags:  Argentina, As Farc, cannabis, Cocaine, Colombia, drugs, Legalization, marijuana, Narcotrafic    Posted date:  June 3, 2011  |  12 Comments

The legalization to consume some drugs in Argentina has generated a great polemic in the country. The Government had to firmly state that: “ There will never be free drugs in Buenos Aires”. The executive of Cristina Fernandez announced to propose a legal change, where the consumer would not be consider a delinquent.

This type of regulations  are really interesting taking in consideration that South America is a continent where the production of drugs is very wide, and it is controlled and handle illegally.

The Argentinean authorities considered that this policy has failed due to the fact that it will equate “the addict with the trafficker”, these were the words that yesterday the Minister of Justice, Aníbal Fernández said. He claimed that it is more important to bring medical attendance to the consumers and chase drug trafficking, rather than expend the State resources into penal processes against the drug addicts.

This is remarkable change of posture for Argentina, since the 1989 ONU convention, it was always possitionated towards the persecusion of drug consume.

The Government’s announcement has generated divisions of opinions among the partidarians that focus on attacking the problem with a  similar angle as some Euroepan countries, such as Spain. Against the others that advert that the measure will provoke the opposite effect, than the one expected.

This is the first time that this kind of drug regulations are being discuss in South America. If we take in consideration the posibility to legalize drugs in South America, rather than having them situated in the black market, and controlled by delincuents, and guerrilleros such as the As Farc in Colombia. It is good to look at the other side of the coin, where offering control and regulation many of this groups would dissolve and the drug consumption would be controlled  in a legal way.

WE´RE TWO ARGENTINIAN GIRLS WHO THINK LIKE ANIBAL FERNANDEZ. IT’S USELESS TO WASTE THE MONEY OF OUR TAXES ON PROCESSES THAT LEAD TO EITHER NOWHERE OR TO LEGALIZE DRUGS :) . THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD WORRY ON FIGHTING DRUG SELLERS AND THE PROBLEMS OF DRUG ADDICTS INSTEAD OF COVERING OTHER MUCH MORE IMPORTANT PENA PROCESSES, SUCH AS THE “MODIFICACION DE LA CARTA MAGNA DEL BANCO NACION” Y “LA ESTATIZACION DE LOS FONDOS DEL ANSES”.

Any country that locks people in a cage for using a G-d given herb has no standing in critisizing ANY other countries human rights record. That means you america.

If Argentina legalizes marijuana we will relocate our million dollar business to Argentina, buy property there and retire there spending our money there. The us can go fk itself.

I would prefer Asia personally but they seem to be even more backwards than the americans.

Although i agree with the fact that the addict is not the head of the problem , i don’t think that legalization is the solution. As an Argentinian, its hard for me to believe that the country is prepared and organized enough to applied successfully this kind of regulation. Specially if you take into account that the State has never shown real interest in fighting against drugs or trying to save their victims.

Living in Argentina has taught me that people care more about useless issues than serious problems like this one. In my opinion, I think that Government is not thinking about the latent situation. As Anibal Fernandez said, they try to support those people who are victims of this addiction rather than fight against it. This is really hard to believe because we want to stop it and not allow people to do it. The main point here is how can we make this situation disappear? Honestly, I´m still waiting for an answer.

It is necessary to give a solution to this problem, otherwise the consecuences will be worst. It is necessary to fight against the root of the problem and create a system considering the caracteristics of our country, The government shoul provide help to the people who suffer this addiction and no treate then as delinquents, so they can improve and change their way of live. The government must fight against the real guilties, the traffickers of drugs, in order to solve this problem.
