What is the connection between Blur, Gorillaz and an opera about an Elizabethan alchemist?
The answer might not be hard to find — we talk about Damon Albarn, now an opera composer.
The Manchester International Festival received “Dr Dee: An English Opera” created by Albarn and directed by Rufus Norris taking place at the Palace Theatre during the festival. The Dr. Dee story related the part of this historical figure who gets involved with Elisabeth I.
Based on John Dee, a paradigmatic figure, who was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, navigator, book collector, philosopher and proponent of empire for an expanding Britain, this script take us to the England’s 17th century with a mix of opera and rock.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Damon Albarn confirms his feature in the play as himself “with no neckerchief or tights”.
This is his second opera work, after presetting “Monkey: Journey to the West” in 2007.
According to his statement, Albarn says that he has an strange emotional connection with Dee and the magical and charming England.
Damon Albarn is not the only famous face that assisted to the festival. Names like Bjork and Spoop Dogg also attended to this theatrical festivity.
