People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) plan to launch a pornographic website promoting vegetarian diet and humane treatment of animals. The animal rights organization is infamous for its controversial advertisements promoting its views.

Each year PETA creates a campaign featuring naked celebrities to spread the message that all animals are equal. Previous celebrities who have posed naked for PETA’s campaign include, Jackass’s Steve-O, Jenna Jameson, Ron Jeremy, Jodi Marsh and Pamela Anderson. The upcoming website also features celebrities who support PETA’s ethics.

The porn website was first confirmed to The Huffington Post in August, saying, “the racy things we do are sometimes the most effective way that we can reach particular individuals.”

A spokeswoman for PETA, Lindsay Rajt, on Tuesday that the group has applied with ICM Registry to launch the website, which will be www.peta.xxx. She said a pornographic site will allow PETA to reach a broader audience and that publicity about the site is just as important as the site itself.

Rajt claimed the site will feature tantalizing videos and photographs, which will lead viewers into animal rights messages. She said that Norfolk-based PETA has used porn stars and nudity to get its message across in the past, including an annual speech online in which a PETA representative undresses. The video then changed into an animal rights message and discusses slaughterhouses.

PETA officials will track the adult website to determine if people continue to watch the animal rights messages instead of turning the video off after the nudity has finished. The past videos have shown that people do continue watching the messages. The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk reported that Rajt said the earliest PETA could receive approval for the site is November of this year.

Critics have argued that this method will not be effective as it is too far-fetched and will exclude them from mainstream society. Senior research analyst for the food-industry backed Center for Consumer Freedom, J. Justin Wilson, stated actions like this make PETA increasingly irrelevant in mainstream society.

He said “they don’t seem to be changing the debate anymore, I think in large part because people are writing them off as whack jobs. This is one more example of them being their own worst enemy. If they’re trying to win the hearts and minds of people considering being vegetarians, this is probably the wrong way to do it.”

Daniel Howard from Southern Methodist University also criticized the website and claimed that the website will backfire. He said using a pornography website to promote a message isn’t socially acceptable to a vast majority of Americans.

The website will be streamable internationally and PETA publicly declared their confidence in the website being a success.
