Just wanted to say thanks for this post. It's been a while since I read the book and as I am currently watching the movie I knew there was some combining of characters going on but couldn't put my finger on it. As soon as I saw Yeamon's name it all came flashing back.

I think it may have been a mistake to remove Yeamon. He was a balance to Sanderson in the book... the honest, uncompromising type who somehow got the amazing girl despite being almost totally broke. He was basically the direction Kemp was heading in, which is possibly why in the end they decided he wasn't necessary. But despite being an abusive ass and beating Chenault in the novel, Yeamon saw through Sanderson and how enterprise was ruining the soul of the place. Some of this went into the Sala character in the film, but I would have preferred keeping Yeamon.

I also miss the comically brutal scene on the plane at the beginning of the book.

Overall I think they did a decent job of bringing the story to the screen, but it might have been a bit better if they had stuck closer to the original story.
