As the Greenbriers personal transportation system arrived at our destination, I was in awe. The resort resembles three D.C. White Houses meshed together. The concierge took our bags and the check in was quick, and easy. Marble floors, turned to red or green carpets, checkered floors, twisted hallways, or ballrooms. Chandeliers were at every turn, with plush yellow couches, and floral patters everywhere.

The Greenbrier American Resort offers over twenty five different accommodations, from deluxe suites, to cottages for seven, to estate houses for four, or a Windsorclub room for one. I enter my suite. A lush, king-sized bed with down pillows and comforter awaits. The 24 hour room service menu goes on for days, every amenity is provided, and the views are amazing.West Virginia’s rolling green hills span the area around Greenbrier, nestling the extravagant location in perfection.

According to the Greenbriers website, the Greenbrier dining experience offers thirteen  unique restaurants, cafés and lounges. The Main Dining Room features southern and French-inspired dishes. The resort has recently expanded their dining options with fresh sushi andPacific Rimspecialties at In-Fusion and authentic, mouthwatering Italian fare at The Forum.

Wagyu beef, fresh seafood, aged prime cuts and tableside-prepared Bananas Foster are the featured stars of their premier steakhouse, Prime 44 West. Other options include Sam Snead’s at the Golf Club, Slammin’ Sammy’s, Café Carleton. In 2009, Greenbrier introduced The Greenbrier Farm. This 40-acre farm raises nearly all of the produce for The Greenbrier Restaurant Collection in season including 60+ varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Greenbriers’ experienced and diverse culinary brigade is led by Executive Chef Rich Rosendale, CMC. Chef Rosendale is one of 66 Certified Master Chefs in the United States and brings impeccable flavors to Greenbriers’ timeless menus. I arrived at Draper’s Café in time for lunch, and my first Greenbrier food experience. Draper’s Café is a place for comfort food.

I ordered the honey BBQ wings, and my guest ordered the Rubén. As I dug in, I realized the flavors were like nothing I had ever tasted. Sweet, honey mustard, BBQ sauce, and a spicy ranch for dipping, left my toes curling with happiness. For dessert, I had gelato ice-cream. Yes they have gelato, it’s Greenbrier of course.

That night I enjoyed fresh, jump shrimp cocktail, complete with fresh flowers for my in room table, and six loaves of assorted, fresh backed bread, two types of cocktail sauce, and lemons from the Greenbrier Farm. For breakfast the next morning I indulged in egg whites, muffins, biscuits, fresh orange juice, and yogurt.

The servers offered my guest and I fresh smoothie samples. Blueberries, lime juice, and banana, swirled together on my taste buds, creating an electrifying treat. I didn’t have a large amount of time for pleasure, but the resort offers, literally hundreds of indoor and outdoor activities, and a five star spa, rated by Forbes.

There is an afternoon tea and concert, bowling, a movie theater, indoor and outdoor swimming, fitness center, tennis, horseback ridding, falconry, shopping, laser tag, hiking, carriage rides, fishing, golf galore, kayaking, ice skating, yoga retreats, paintball, sleigh rides, whitewater rafting, hunting, and so much more. Its no wonder presidents have stayed at the Greenbrier.

Speaking of presidents, the declassified Bunker at The Greenbrier is a must-see experience, according to greenbrier staff. This tour takes you behind the scenes and walks you through a fascinating period in the resort’s history. Carved deep into the mountainside beneath the West Virginia Wing is an emergency Cold War fallout shelter.

Once a top-secret U.S.government relocation facility for Congress, The Greenbrier Bunker is now open to anyone interested in reliving a legendary piece of Greenbrier history. Bunker tours provide a unique and in-depth look behind the hidden doors and let you explore an aspect of The Greenbrier that no other resort can claim.

After sightseeing, guests may want to try their hands in the Greenbrier Casino.  TheWest Virginia casino combines high-roller thrills and high-class style to create an unforgettable Greenbrier gaming experience.  Their new 103,000 square-foot venue is filled with world-class gaming at its finest. Enjoy live entertainment, international cuisine and boutique shopping in an elegant setting that revels in the warmth and charm of southern hospitality.

Casino Hours:

Monday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.
Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
Sunday1:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

If you play a lucky hand, why not enjoy your winnings at Greenbriers’ indoor shopping center? From fine jewelry and lingerie to toys, shoes, flowers and basic needs, Greenbrier stores have it all.

Greenbrier also has an award winning clinic formed in 1948 by progressive business leaders, noted for its personalized care, magnificent facilities, and its commitment to high class excellence. No guest need fear, with the clinic right across the grounds.

As I boarded to leave, I thought that the one thing that stood out amongst the royal perfection of the Greenbrier was its staff. Always friendly, polite, and accommodating, guests will literally feel like kings andqueens. Greenbrier may burn a small hole in your wallet, but it will kindle your heart, and form lasting memories for anyone visiting West Virginia.
