NFL: Week 16 Power Rankings

Posted by: Jonathan Ellish    Tags:  49ers, Chargers, Cowboys, nfc east, NFL, power rankings, Seahawks, Steelers, Week 16 Power Rankings    Posted date:  December 24, 2011  |  No comment

The Packers remain number one this week despite losing their first game of the season, but beyond that there’s some movement. The Saints now sit in the number two spot, moving up from fourth as the Ravens and Steelers both lose. The 49ers see themselves leap frog the Patriots to move into third after a solid win over the Steelers.

The big winners this week are the Cowboys, Chargers, and the Seahawks. The Cowboys break the top ten moving from 14th to 10th after their victory puts them in the driver’s seat in the NFC East. The Chargers moved up from 18th to 14th after knocking off the Ravens and moving back to .500. They need some help, but are definitely still alive in the AFC West. The Seahawks won their third straight and moved to 15th from 20th.

The big losers this week are the Ravens, Titans, and Bears. The Ravens lost their fourth game of the season and fell from 2nd to 6th moving one spot behind the Steelers. The Titans dropped seven spots from 13th to 20th after losing to the Colts giving them their first victory of the season. The Bears also saw themselves drop four spots falling to 21st from 17th.

The Vikings, Rams, and Colts again round out the bottom despite Indianapolis getting their first win of the season.

Rank (LW) Team Record Comment
(1) Packers 13-1 With the perfect season gone, the Packers can focus on getting healthy and gearing up for a Super Bowl run
(4) Saints 11-3 Drew Brees is on pace to break records and catch Aaron Rodgers for MVP.
(6) 49ers 11-3 A solid win over the Steelers has the 49ers in the driver’s seat for a number 2 seed.
(5) Patriots 11-3 If the Patriots win their final two games, the road to the Super Bowl goes through Gillette Stadium. (James Walker ESPN)
(3) Steelers 10-4 Ben Roethlisberger’s ankle could be the difference between the Steelers making a deep playoff run or going home early.
(2) Ravens 10-4 All four of the Ravens losses have come against teams with losing records.
(7) Texans 10-4 Was the Carolina game just a dud, or a sign of things to come? (Paul Kuharsky ESPN)
(8) Falcons 9-5 The Falcons have gotten on a roll at the best possible time.
(11) Lions 9-5 Matthew Stafford is putting the Lions on his back with another 13 point comeback putting the total at 4 this year.
(14) Cowboys 8-6 The Cowboys control their destiny and, with a win over the Eagles and a Jets win over the Giants, they’ll clinch the NFC East.
(10) Broncos 8-6 Not even Tim Tebow could out-duel Tom Brady, but they’re still in the driver’s seat in the AFC West.
(9) Jets 8-6 Getting blown out by the Eagles got somewhat overlooked by everyone else losing and the Jets still controlling their destiny.
(15) Bengals 8-6 The Bengals are hanging around waiting for the Jets to mess up.
(18) Chargers 7-7 Somehow the Chargers are still in the race, but finish up on the road in Detroit and Oakland.
(20) Seahawks 7-7 The Seahawks have quietly put together a three game winning streak to get back to .500.
(12) Giants 7-7 The Giants have lost 5 of their last 6 and there “away” game vs. the Jets could prove critical.
(19) Cardinals 7-7 Arizona has trailed in the second half of every game this season, winning seven of them. (Mike Sando)
(21) Eagles 6-8 While they aren’t eliminated, the Eagles need a lot of help from Dallas and New York (both teams) to make the playoffs.
(16) Raiders 7-7 No excuse for blowing the game late against Detroit and it might cost them the playoffs.
(13) Titans 7-7 Losing to the Colts pretty much ended Tennessee’s chances.
(17) Bears 7-7 Josh McCown has been named the starter, but it might be too little too late.
(25) Chiefs 6-8 In Romeo Crennel’s first game as head coach the Chiefs beat the undefeated Packers and stay alive in the AFC West.
(23) Dolphins 5-9 The Dolphins have a chance to play spoiler finishing against the Patriots and the Jets.
(24) Panthers 5-9 Cam Newton has taken the Panthers from 32nd to top 10 in yards, first downs, red zone offense and scoring. (Mike Sando ESPN)
(27) Redskins 5-9 The Redskins are out of it, but potentially stopping the Giants from making it as well has to be satisfying.
(22) Bills 5-9 What happened to the Bills? Seven games straight has Buffalo right where we expected them to be.
(26) Jaguars 4-10 Besides MJD the Jaguars aren’t a good football team.
(29) Browns 4-10 The Browns have a lot to address in the offseason.
(28) Buccaneers 4-10 Talk about a complete 180 the Bucs might lose 10 straight to finish the season ending with Carolina and Atlanta.
(30) Vikings 2-12 It’s hard to say what looks worse, the offense or the secondary. (John Clayton ESPN)
(31) Rams 2-12 Kellen Clemens posted the Rams’ highest single-game NFL passer rating of the season Sunday. (Mike Sando ESPN)
(32) Colts 1-13 They get their first win over Tennessee and remain in the pole position for Andrew Luck. It was a good weekend for Indianapolis.
