Eagles of Death Metal, the American rock band founded by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures), is touring Europe, South Africa and North America. Toonari Post had the chance to attend the concert held by the band in Vienna, Austria.

Eagles of Death Metal were the headliners of the first day of The Full Hit of Summer Festival. The Full Hit of Summer Festival, organized by PSI2 music, takes place in the heart of Vienna, in the Arena venue, revolving around the outdoor stage.

Eagles of Death Metal played at the end of a day that saw two emerging bands from Vienna, Mile Me Deaf and M185 perform, along with the folk rock band from San Francisco Two Gallants.  The location allows the attendees to fully enjoy the performance in a cozy space, with the attitude of the big festival. An outdoor stage is the center of the attention, where yesterday a very excited crowd gathered to enjoy the performances.

Eagles of Death Metal started playing around 9:45 pm with the audience thrilling to enjoy some of the band’s good Rock ‘n’ Roll. The band line up for the live performance was composed of frontman Jesse Hughes, guitarist Dave Catching, drummer Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age) and bassist Brian O’Connor. They went through the band’s discography, not sparing moments of jamming excellence. A powerful performance, with triumphant guitars and Castillo’s drumming could make anybody’s soul shake.

Eagles of Death Metal arrived excited as well; Jesse Hughes entertained the audience for the whole time, not only through the band’s music, but also with his theatrical way of owning the stage. Funny and cheerful interactions between him and the crowd enriched what was already a perfect performance by the band. Hughes said more than once that the goal was for everybody to have a good time, and everybody seemed to. People in the audience looked absolutely happy.

The crowd did not spare any energy, sang, screamed, and danced along every song, ignoring the annoying rain that accompanied the whole performance. Hughes expressed his excitement for the performance, the whole tour, and the location, more than once, and defined the crowd that gathered to Arena Wien for the concert as ‘rare.’  The audience surely responded to every input the band gave, and a mutual exchange of energy complemented the entire performance.

The band played for about one hour and a half in total. They left the stage and came back for the encore due to the request of screaming crowd. They played two additional songs, and had a long jamming section, with the two guitarists Jesse Hughes and Cave Catching at the center of it. After the show ended the crowd called the band back on stage for quite some time but, maybe also for organizational reasons, the band did not come out for a second encore. An amazing concert, with the pure spirit of good rock ‘n’ roll, and the sole aim of having a good time, being the absolute protagonists.
