New Open Source Technology from Unicorn Media

Tempe, U.S.A. - Unicorn Media, an Internet video solutions provider, today announced that it has extended an open source technology that allows users to play back HLS in the OSMF framework with support for adaptive streaming and upgrades to the latest version of OSMF. This technology, in conjunction with Unicorn Once, will be a powerful tool in allowing developers and content owners to repurpose their existing HLS assets to play seamlessly in Flash on the desktop with dynamically inserted ads.

Unicorn Media’s patented technology, Unicorn Once, enables monetization of media content and allows publishers to upload one file one time and deliver that content to any IP-enabled device in the world via a single URL. Customers benefit from increased revenue by creating inventory, simplified workflow, real-time access to user behavior and consistent user experience, regardless of the device they are viewing.

The Unicorn Once More project is an open source technology that enables developers and video publishers to leverage the same ease and quality in delivery to the desktop that they’ve already experienced to mobile and OTT devices with Unicorn Once. The technology enables users to repurpose their HLS assets for Flash, making it easier to reach OSMF players and eliminating the need to create new versions of their content to reach the desktop.

“Our sophisticated broadcast partners utilize Unicorn Once for their state-of-the-art monetization strategies on mobile and connected CE devices and increasingly want to bring the same workflow to their traditional desktop delivery environments. The Once More project was developed for companies who are interested in Unicorn Once for the desktop but are not quite ready to move to HTML5,” says AJ McGowan, Unicorn Media CTO.

“While Unicorn Once already supports Adobe HDS, we think that HLS is a powerful protocol and that adding support for Flash OSMF creates additional benefits such as increasing CDN cache efficiency, providing more control over adaptive playout experiences, decreased start times, and flexibility over delivery experience. This is a natural extension of the Unicorn Once vision of enabling our customers to seamlessly deliver an optimal rich, adaptive, monetized playout experience on every device and in every environment.”
