New York, U.S.A — Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, announced Ms. Maliaca Oxnam, Associate Librarian at the University of Arizona, as the winner of the first annual Elsevier Library Connect Charleston Conference Award for first time presenters.

Ms. Oxnam, a member of the University of Arizona Scholarly Publishing and Data Management Team, was selected by committee in a blind judging for her session entitled “Moving Technical Reports Forward: New Roles for Libraries & Librarians”; she is one of four co-presenters. Ms. Oxnam may apply her $1,500award to travel costs incurred to attend the 32nd Annual Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisition, November 7-10, 2012.

Maliaca Oxnam said of her award, “Winning the Elsevier Library Connect Charleston Conference Award is a very welcome surprise. I want to thank Elsevier for its support, as this award will help me and my university to offset conference travel and registration costs. I am very appreciative to be given this opportunity to learn from library colleagues and to share my own experiences and knowledge with other librarians in the community.”

“This year’s Charleston Conference theme, ‘Accentuate the Positive’ is most reflective and applicable to Ms. Oxnam’s conference session,” said Maggie Farrell, one of the award judges and Dean of Libraries at the University of Wyoming. “Elsevier’s sponsorship of the award helps us celebrate the positive strides in knowledge facilitation made by librarians such as Ms. Oxnam, and puts the spotlight on collaboration and information-sharing achievements among librarians across the country.”

Each year more than 1,000 librarians, publishers, electronic resource managers, consultants, and library material vendors gather at the Charleston Conference. Following the conference, Ms. Oxnam will share her conference experience in the Library Connect Newsletter, a complimentary publication from Elsevier which reaches more than 16,000 subscribers worldwide.

In addition to the Library Connect Charleston Conference Award, Elsevier’s Library Connect Program now offers two US $1,500 travel sponsorships to librarian committees developing librarian-scientist programming at STEM conferences in any part of the world. The librarian committee will award the sponsorship to a librarian to cover conference fees and travel-related costs. The goal of the sponsorship program is to foster opportunities for enhanced communication among librarians and their user communities within STEM disciplines. Applications must be submitted by December 31, 2012, and travel completed by June 30, 2013.
