Keeping in mind that this installment of The Hobbit is one of three total movies, not much IS supposed to happen, as it is mainly exposition and the beginning of Bilbo's journey to Lonely Mountain. The characters do take part in their fair share of walking and talking, but if Middle Earth had cars and a severe lack of aggressive orcs and goblins, then perhaps it wouldn't quite be a journey, nor might it even be Middle Earth. Some scenes may have been drawn out, but when projecting the depth of Tolkien's tales onto screen, it is bound to happen.
As for the overall quality of The Hobbit in the Lord of the Rings lineup, it fits right in- even filling in some back story gaps along the way. Perhaps, with this insight, even those who were disappointed in the first Hobbit movie could manage to look forward to seeing the finish of the journey to Lonely Mountain.
I, personally, would love to see a version of this movie where the characters were not walking or talking, and still somehow managed to complete their quest. Now THAT would be an interesting, (albeit inaccurate to the book), rendition.
