Minions ran away with the box office once again with a total gross of $229.2 million in merely 12 days. The movie ‘Despicable Mw 2′ outdid expectations with a weekend gross of $44.8 million, which was enough to beat the debuts of Adam Sandler’s ‘Grown Ups 2′ and Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’. The Universal Picture’s animated hit cost around $76 million to make and featured the voices of Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Kristen Wiig, and Russell Brand. Also in top ten this week are: ‘The Heat’, ‘The Lone Ranger’, ‘Monsters University’, ‘World War Z’, ‘White House Down’, ‘Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain’, and ‘Man of Steel’.
In ‘Despicable Me 2′, Gru (voice of Steve Carell) was recruited by the Anti-Villain League in order to aid in dealing with a powerful new super criminal. Though the sequel was not as moving as its predecessor, it offers lots of eye-popping visual ingenuity and a hand full of good laughs. “This has become the July film to beat right now. There’s something about the minions that audiences just love.” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the Hollywood.com box office tracking division.
Coming in second was Adam Sandler’s ‘Grown Ups 2′ grossing in $42.5 million in its first weekend, beating most analysts’ projections which was set around $30 million. Despite critics condemnation, Sony was pleased with the movie’s performance. The sequel earned a 6% approval rate from rottentomatoes.com. Regardless, ‘Grown Ups 2′ became Sandler’s second-best movie opening of his career, with his best being ‘The Longest Yard’ from 2005 with $58.6 million over a span of four days. Approximate ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US theatres, according to Hollywood.com can be seen below.
