The United Kingdom has embraced online gambling ten years ago. So why is the United States still struggling with the issue, while the UK seems to have it all figured out?
Since the UK legalized online gambling (or “remote gambling,” as it is known there), society has continued to function effectively, and the United States likely won’t fall apart either. Online lotteries and horse betting are legal in the country. While poker and other gambling are illegal online, US citizens participate in these activities every day at casinos, so what could be so evil about the convenience of Internet gambling?
Though the UK’s restrictions are fewer and the laws are more lenient, problem gambling is no more an issue there as it is in the United States. One of the major arguments against legalizing online gambling in the United States is the concern of compulsive gambling. Looking to the United Kingdom’s legalization of this particular subject, it has shown that the issue of problem gambling has not increased since the legalization.
As we have learned from laws against things like drugs and underage drinking, making something illegal does not mean people will stop doing it. And dedicated people will find a way to make it happen regardless of laws. The UK has chosen to tax and regulate the gambling industry to profit from the activity. If the United States were to adapt similar regulations as the UK regarding this, it could be very beneficial to countering the country’s national debt.
In the United States, horse race betting is the only type of sports betting that is legal online. However, even when using legal websites based in the United States, it is not uncommon for credit and debit card payments to be blocked and considered “illegal offshore gambling.”
UK citizens have access to a variety of forms of gambling from casino games to sports betting. It has not caused problems in society, as some fear in the United States. William Hill is the top betting site in the UK, offering horse race betting and other sports betting, as well as casino games and many more gambling options. The company offers convenience for the gambler as well, with the option to bet at William Hill shops, online, over the telephone, and through mobile-friendly apps and websites.
