The Cheyney University “C” Club will be hosting the annual fundraising event “Wade Wilson Golf tournament” on August 26 at the Penn Oaks Country Club near West Chester, Pennsylvania. Last year, the nonprofit was able to gather up to $50,000 in scholarship funds for student athletes in need of financial assistance.
According to Larry Skinner, the Club Vice President and Chairman, “the Wade Wilson Golf tournament is the most important fundraiser of the year.” The latest education cuts imposed by Governor Tom Corbett’s resulted in an increase of 2.2 to 3.4 percent in tuition fees this coming academic year, raising the cost of obtaining an undergraduate degree once again. The monetary target of the event is to gather $100,000 for athletic scholarships to support Cheyney University’s 12 varsity sports and cheerleading squad. In a press release, Mr. Skinner said the following,
“CU’s athletic budget has been cut substantially this year. We plan to give 100% of the money we raise (after expenses) toward athletic scholarships to help with recruitment and to keep kids in school this fall semester. We have a huge commitment to Cheyney athletes. We need the community and alumni to step up to the plate. This is much more than a golf outing. What we’re doing is more critical this year than ever.”
Recently, Penn Live reported that undergraduate students attending the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education will have to pay 3 percent more, making the in-state tuition and technology fees for a full academic year to $6,990. Major cost drivers in the current 2013-14 budget are the $15 million growth in pension costs, additional $14.5 million for health care, and $11 million in added salary costs. The System estimates the number of students statewide to be 119,000.
The “C” Club is committed to supporting the goals of Cheyney University and its athletic department. The Club’s goals align well with the core mission of the University, which is “to provide excellent educational opportunities for a diverse student population.” The main highlights of the “Wade Wilson Golf tournament” include a golf clinic at Penn Oaks Country Club, a silent auction, a private tour of QVC Studio Park, and a Wine/Cupcake tasting at Penns Woods Winery.
The Honorary Chairperson of the event is Senator Vincent J. Hughes, a Democratic member of the PA State Senate, representing the 7th District. Through contributions to the fundraiser, donors will be regarded as members of the “C” Club, entitling them to membership benefits corresponding to their donation level. Currently, club members are mostly made up of Cheyney University alumni, former student athletes, parents, fans, and community supporters. Registration is planned to commence at 7 am, with the tournament’s shotgun starting an hour later.
