Sting, the British man who immortalized himself in the songwriting hall of fame, is back with a new original epic material, after a whole decade. An album is titled “The Last Ship,” inspired by a musical play that carries the same name.
“The Last Ship” discovers the deepest themes of Sting’s childhood home, bringing up his memories of growing up in the shadow of the Swan Hunters Shipyard in Wallsend. His own nostalgia reveals universal teachings, such as the complexity of relationships, the passage of time and the importance of family and community to form an affecting, complex parable for our modern times.
The music produced in this album is about the play itself. The play’s main story focuses on the shipyard workers and the ship building industry in North England, back in the 1980′s when it faced a huge decline and caused the struggle of many families. This is where they sought advice from a Christian priest who told them to build a ship and sail into the world, and that symbolic gesture was the essence of this album’s creation, and the title “The Last Ship.”
Sting has been working on this new original material for over 3 years now with the world’s best producers and composers such as Eric Clapton, Elton John and Carly Simon. The album may musically be different than Sting’s other material, as the material is meant to present the music as if its been played by the shipbuilders themselves, in a pub or in the middle of the ocean, expressing how they would have felt or what they would have sung.
The album will released on the September 24 this year, months before the release of the play itself in 2014. There will be a total of 20 tracks on the album, 12 on standard and vinyl version and 20 on the special edition.
