At this moment in this time in music, fashion and entertainment it seems no one can out shine the top selling pop artist Lady Gaga. But surprising she doesn’t dress in her avant-garde outfits to get media attention or sell more records. The unique and talented singer does it to deal with voices she hears in her head.
The 27-year-old has told the media she has been hearing voices in her head since she was a young girl. She grew up with rich religious parents that she claims to have gotten along with, but that did not stop her feelings of depression.
Those feelings caused her to turn to drugs like cocaine in her teen years as she opened up about the topic on The Graham Norton Show. Wearing a huge feathered headdress and promoting her new album ‘Artpop’, the superstar replied openly about the trauma behind the imitable ensembles on the show last week in London. She said, “It’s how I deal with my insanity. From when I was young I had voices in my head, and for the longest time I was drinking and doing a lot of drugs, and it was the clothing and the artistry that saved me. I get sheer joy out of creativity, it’s like a psychedelic experience for me.”
According to many studies including one conducted in Manchester University, it is normal for many individuals to hear voices in their head. The study says 1 in 25 people is prone to hearing voices therefore making it common among the general population at least in the United Kingdom alone. In America the numbers could be higher; especially in our pill popping generation.
“We know that many members of the general population hear voices but have never felt the need to access mental health services. Some experts even claim that more people hear voices and don’t seek psychiatric help than those who do,” said Aylish Campbell a scientists that was involved in the study. She also added, “It doesn’t seem to be hearing voices itself that cause the problem. What seems to be more important is how people go on and interpret the voices.”
The team in the study explained that most people who hear voices is due to having suffered childhood traumas and is closely related to cultural backgrounds one has been brought up into. But the voices may also be active due to health reasons, stress or a person may have anxiety and many other symptoms can be included; that is why it is important to talk a professional.
Whether the voices are good or bad, or if you have heard them as a children or as an adult, individuals should seek assistance from a psychologist in case there is any harm that can be done from the voices, or if a person is just confused or concerned about what they hear and feel. Because not everyone can be like Ms. Gaga and throw on 12 inch heels with an eye patch and go to the grocery store to feel better.
But even from wearing platform heels to a dress made entirely of meat to dressing like a man and wearing seven feet high headdresses, this artists has raised the fashion and creativity bar for others in the entertainment business who have not been able to keep up with her. Gaga has inspired a great bond within her fan base or “little monsters” through her past, music and fashion.
She is the perfect exemplar of standing out in a world that tells you to fit in.
