The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing is presenting another action-packed entry in their line of Dungeons & Dragons comics. This April, Dungeons & Dragons: Cutter, a five-issue miniseries written by R.A. and Geno Salvatore with art by David Baldeon and covers by Steve Ellis, weaves the tale of a family fiercely divided and at odds with itself, with a legendary sword hanging in the balance.

When the battle-hardened Drow renegade Tos’un must choose an heir to his legacy, his half-Drow son Tierflin and daughter Doum’weille become locked in vicious competition. But what will the prize, the bloodthirsty sword Khazid’hea, have to say on the matter?

“These comic series have become a wonderful tool for me to fill in the blanks and to crystallize my thoughts on the Legend of Drizzt novels going forward,” explains R.A. Salvatore. “The fallout from the twisting events in Neverwinter Tales not only came into play in the last couple of Drizzt books, but allowed me a strong plot line for an upcoming novel I’ve yet to pen. The same is true for Cutter – I see it already. So while these comic stories are self-contained, they open up to the wider stories going forward.”

From the writing team of powerhouse Dungeons & Dragons veterans R.A. and Geno Salvatore comes a tale steeped in action and intrigue, woven into the fantastically imaginative world that can only be found in the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons & Dragons. Rounded out by the vivid art of David Baldeon and Steve Ellis’ striking covers, Dungeons & Dragons: Cutter is sure to be a wildly fun ride for fans of Dungeons & Dragons and comics everywhere, not to mention an unexpected tie-in to this summer’s blockbuster R.A. Salvatore novel.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Library of American Comics will be collecting comics legend Russ Manning’s classic run with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ King of the Jungle in 2013, IDW publishing recently announced. Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips is a four-volume series. The first three volumes will chronologically collect all of Manning’s daily black & white and full-color Sunday strips from 1967 to 1974, while the fourth volume will collect the remaining Sunday strips, which Manning continued to do until 1979.

“The addition of Tarzan to the Library of American Comics amplifies even further that the imprint is the premier archival home for comic strip reprints and collections,” says IDW’s President and Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “Russ Manning’s Tarzan run is one of the real highlights of the modern age of adventure strips and we are extremely excited to be the home of its long-anticipated return to print.”

The series of hardcover volumes will commence May 29th with Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 – 1969. Fans will be treated to the first-ever collection of a historic turning point in Tarzan history: when Russ Manning was handpicked by the Burroughs estate to return the strip to its creator’s original vision. Manning put together a dream team of assistants in this historic endeavor, including future comics greats Dave Stevens, William Stout, and Mike Royer, creating one of the most loaded rosters in comics history, and a perfect opportunity for new fans to discover the adventures of Viscount Greystoke.

In his introduction to Volume One, William Stout writes, “Russ Manning was a natural storyteller. He may also be one of the most underrated writers in comics. His beautiful art is so captivating that it’s easy to understand how it might overshadow his scripts. He was as adept with telling Tarzan tales in contemporary Africa as he was setting Ape Man stories in dinosaur-infested Pal-ul-don.”

Reproduced from the Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. file copies, fans can expect Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips to receive the same critically acclaimed, award-winning treatment that Dean Mullaney, The Library of American Comics, and IDW Publishing have become renowned for.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Marvel has announced Uncanny Avengers #8AU from the blockbuster team of Rick Remender, Gerry Duggan & Adam Kubert. This May, the Uncanny Avengers must band together and make their way throughout this new dystopian world. But when The Apocalypse Twins and Kang are involved, will they make it out of the Age of Ultron in one piece? And when Havok and Rogue set off to save the Morlocks, what secret will Rogue unearth about the Twin’s hidden past?

“We’ve been setting up the role of Apocalypse, the Apocalypse Twins in the Marvel Universe, and with this issue readers get their first in-depth look at them and a MAJOR reveal in regards to Kang’s involvement in it all,” explained Remender. “It also hints at a big future romance we’re developing. Do not miss this issue.”

With the robotic revolution in full force, no fan can miss how Age of Ultron will ultimately change the Marvel Universe leaving no hero or villain unscathed.

“When Rick first told me about the Uncanny Avengers I was floored – it’s such a fun book with so many threads are being woven together. Fans are only starting to see the hints of where this run is going,” explained Duggan. “Age Of Ultron asks one of the greatest questions fans have been wondering for decades, what if Ultron won?! And throughout the event, people are going to love seeing these dominoes…and characters fall. The story I’m cooking up with Rick and Adam is a fun, but important story that marries two timelines, and I’m just thrilled to be a part of it in some small way.”

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to your local comic shop and reserve a copy of Uncanny Avengers #8AU.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dark Horse has announced the promotion of Jim Gibbons to associate editor. Gibbons, perhaps the “comics industry’s youngest veteran,” came to the Dark Horse PR department in 2009, following a brief career in the comics media as a writer and associate editor for Wizard magazine and a contributor to Comic Book Resources. In 2011, he moved over to the Dark Horse Editorial department as an assistant editor.

In his time at Dark Horse, Gibbons has worked directly under Mike Richardson on the Eisner and Harvey Award–winning anthology Dark Horse Presents, and has also assisted on Brian Wood’s critically acclaimed, epic ongoing series The Massive and Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain.

In addition, Jim Gibbons has edited Francesco Francavilla’s bona-fide smash-hit series, The Black Beetle, as well as Tom Morello’s politically charged, postapocalyptic comics debut, Orchid, which wrapped up last week.

“Jim has quickly established himself as one of Dark Horse’s bright, up-and-coming editorial staffers,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson. “His hard work on Dark Horse Presents helped to win us the industry’s two major awards. I am certain that with the same level of dedication he has shown thus far, he and the books he works on will win many more for Dark Horse in the future. Congratulations, Jim.”

“Jim brings all the best qualities a creator can hope for from an editor: he pushes you to do your best work, kicks your butt when you are behind, and buys you a beer when you are done. I’m lucky to have him on my team,” said Francesco Francavilla, creator of The Black Beetle.

This news comes after the departure of associate editor Rachel Edidin, who is leaving Dark Horse after seven years in the Editorial department. Edidin helped shape the Dark Horse prose line with projects such as Ellen Datlow’s Lovecraft Unbound and Yahtzee Croshaw’s Mogworld, while also working on critically acclaimed comics series like Caitlín R. Kiernan’s Alabaster. Edidin plans to focus on work as a freelance editor. Dark Horse wishes her the best of luck and hope to work with her in the future.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Eisner Award–winning artist Francesco Francavilla’s new series at Dark Horse is already being called one of the year’s best! After receiving unanimous praise from retailers, fans, and every media outlet under the sun, The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 has officially sold out of its first printing.

Now, Dark Horse has announced that despite their best efforts, demand was just too high to keep stock on shelves. In order to time as closely as possible with the release of the critically acclaimed series’ second issue, Francesco Francavilla and Dark Horse Comics have put together another printing with an all-new cover.

This new series introduces the Black Beetle, a mob-busting costumed supersleuth, as he investigates a bombing that has killed off some of Colt City’s notorious criminals! Steeped in pulp noir with modern sensibility, this is one new series you need to read.

“I am very humbled by the great response that The Black Beetle has received. This is such a work of love that’s been in the making for several years, and I am thrilled to see so many people are really digging the book,” said creator Francesco Francavilla. “It’s my goal to make this a book that can be enjoyed by those who love classic pulp stories, as well as new fans who want a fun, entertaining read. I can’t wait to show everyone what’s coming up next!”

Retailers, the second printing of The Black Beetle #1 is available through Diamond now, using the following order code: DEC128352. This issue will be on sale in the direct market on March 13, 2013.

Fans, look for The Black Beetle: No Way Out #2 at your local comic shop on February 20.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In an amazing show of demand for Dark Horse’s newest hallmark in video game art book history, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia soared to the top of the Nielsen BookScan charts last week, making it the #1 book in America.

In addition, the book has reached #1 on the Wall Street Journal and New York Times Bestseller list. Dark Horse is also announcing a record print run approaching 400,000 copies, with the number continuing to grow as The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia dominates sales in the UK, China, Italy, Spain, and Canada.

This handsome hardcover contains never-before-seen concept art, the full history of Hyrule, the official chronology of the games, and much more! Starting with an insightful introduction by the legendary producer and video-game designer of Donkey Kong, Mario, and The Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, this book is crammed full of information about the storied history of Link’s adventures from the creators themselves. As a bonus, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia includes an exclusive comic by the foremost creator of The Legend of Zelda manga—Akira Himekawa.

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia is a must-have for any Legend of Zelda fan.

Praise for The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Hyperion Books and Marvel Entertainment have announced plans to partner and publish two action-packed novels featuring popular Marvel Super Heroes. Scheduled for release in June, both novels showcase strong, smart heroines seeking happiness and love while battling cosmic evil.

She-Hulk, Marvel’s much-beloved comic book heroine who shares her cousin Bruce Banner’s ability to transform into a hero of incredible power, comes to life in a page-turning novel. In The She-Hulk Diaries, Jennifer Walters, aka She Hulk, juggles climbing the corporate ladder by day and battling villains and saving the world by night—all while trying to navigate the dating world to find a Mr. Right who might not mind a sometimes-very big and green girlfriend.

The second novel, Rogue Touch, features one of the most popular X-Men characters, Rogue, a young woman trying to navigate the challenges of everyday life and romance—except that her touch is deadly. After accidentally putting her first boyfriend in a coma, she runs away from home where, she meets the handsome and otherworldly James and sparks fly. Like Rogue, however, James’ life is hardly simple. To elude his mysterious and dangerous family, James shaves his head, dons all black. Stealing a car, they head out on the highway and eventually, Rogue has to decide whether she will unleash her devastating powers in order to save the only man alive who seems to truly understand her.

The announcement was made by Hyperion’s Editor-in-Chief Elisabeth Dyssegaard. Of the deal, Dyssegaard says, “Marvel has had tremendous success with recent hit movies and we think it’s a great time to explore what happens to super heroines when they are dropped into traditional women’s novels.”

“It’s exciting to see Hyperion bring two of our most beloved female super heroes, Rogue and She-Hulk, to life in ways you’ve never seen before,” said Ruwan Jayatilleke, Associate Publishers/SVP, Marvel Entertainment. “Whether you’re a long time fan of Marvel or new to our Super Heroes, these novels deliver exciting stories that will capture your imagination.”

About Hyperion

Founded in 1991, Hyperion publishes general-interest fiction and non-fiction hardcover, eBook, trade, and mass-market paperback titles. The company publishes about 80 combined hardcover, original eBooks, and paperbacks a year, and offers many of its titles as audio books. Hyperion is the adult trade book publishing unit of the Disney/ABC-Television Group, which is part of The Walt Disney Company.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing has announced a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series. Hot on the heels of last year’s wildly successful Micro-Series, this new series of one-shots is taking a distinctly dark turn and concentrating on the evil deeds of the Turtles’ most nefarious villains.

The first issue rolls out this April with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villains Micro-Series #1: Krang, written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Mike Henderson with a cover by Tyler Walpole. This issue explores the tales of Dimension X’s fearsome despot – and that’s just the opening act.

The thrills continue with the tales of Baxter Stockman by Erik Burnham and Andy Kuhn, Old Hob by Jason Ciaramella and Dave Wachter, and Alopex by Brian Lynch and Ross Campbell.

Powered by this talented creator lineup, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villains Micro-Series is sure to delight fans with all-new tales of classic and brand-new bad guys.

“TMNT has one of the finest rogues’ galleries in all of comics,” said TMNT Editor Bobby Curnow. “They’re deadly, charismatic, and often just plain weird! In short, they’re great fun to read and see in action on the comic book page. I’m extremely excited to see how our creative teams dig into these twisted psyches. AND they’ll set up important story points for our ongoing book!”

The TMNT universe is absolutely packed with colorful and beloved characters and IDW is very excited to be bringing more of its amazing men, women, and creatures into the hands of its many fans.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The response has been unanimous; Eisner Award–winning artist Francesco Francavilla’s new series at Dark Horse is already being called one of the year’s best. Francavilla’s pulp sensation, The Black Beetle: No Way Out, has received overwhelming praise from media, retailers, and fans around the country.

Just two weeks before the release of the series’ second issue, Diamond Comic Distributors has completely sold out of issue #1, and Dark Horse will be transferring stock from other channels to ensure retailers can capitalize on the series’ success.

This new series introduces the mob-busting costumed supersleuth as he investigates a bombing that has killed off some of Colt City’s notorious criminals. Steeped in pulp noir with modern sensibility, this is one new series you need to read.

Praise for the first issue:

“Any pulp and classic noir fan will tell you, there are only a handful of books out on the market that really do the job. An original concept like The Black Beetle will surely give fans of the genre something to cheer for. It’s been a long time coming for this title and it was worth the wait. 10 out of 10.”—Newsarama

“This is a fun, adventure-filled, mystery-tinged story as welcoming to new readers as possible for a comic book. Quite simply, this is good stuff. I may not be the biggest fan of pulp adventures, but I am a self-proclaimed fan of all things good and this is very good indeed. Hopefully, as promised in the text piece at the back of this issue, this is just the beginning. I, for one, cannot wait to get more.” –Comic Book Resources

“The Black Beetle #1 is one of the most exhilarating, stunning superhero comics on the stands . . . This miniseries presents a high-stakes mystery realized through Francavilla’s intensely graphic style, full of innovative layouts and spectacular splash pages.”—The Onion A.V. Club

Retailers, The Black Beetle #1 is available for reorder in limited quantities now.

Fans, make sure to grab your copy while you can. Look for The Black Beetle: No Way Out #2 at your local comic shop on February 20, featuring the attached new art.

Hunter Quaid is a drunken, misanthropic, time-traveling detective from the forties, but that’s not all! As we follow Hunter on his journeys, we find that not all is as it seems, and sharp-eyed readers will find hidden clues to the book’s needlessly elaborate, totally awesome secret.

“The book is a ton of fun, something that Eliot and I feel is missing from a lot of modern comics. We couldn’t be more excited to begin our story in the Eisner Award–winning Dark Horse Presents. It’s an honor,” stated Donny Cates.

Hunter is not the classic story of a perfect hero, but no matter what, when the chips are down and the world is about to end—Quaid is all we got, and all we need.

“Donny and I love comics; they have the amazing ability to embody positivity, and that’s really what Hunter is about. We were just two desperately alone, and drunk, strangers who became best friends that wanted to write a funny, real, and inspiring character,” Eliot Rahal explained. “Hunter is a labor of love and would be nothing without the uncanny conceptual art of Melissa Curtin, and the deadly color work of Lauren Affe; we are all so honored and thrilled for Hunter to have found his first home at Dark Horse Presents.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Following the same pattern as the series’ debut, Diamond Comics and retailers around the country are now sold out of the critically acclaimed second issue of Hellboy in Hell.

In response, Dark Horse is reprinting the second issue. The reprint is available for reorder now, with an on-sale date of February 6, the same week Hellboy in Hell #3 goes on sale.

After saving the world in The Storm and The Fury, but sacrificing himself and Great Britain, Hellboy is dead, cast into Hell, where he finds many familiar faces, and a throne that awaits him. After several years away, Mike Mignola returns to both write and draw Hellboy’s ongoing story. It’s a tale only Mignola could tell, as more of Hellboy’s secrets are at last revealed, in the most bizarre depiction of Hell you’ve ever seen.

Praise for Hellboy in Hell #2:

“Mignola is challenging us. He is educating us. Hellboy in Hell is the kind of comic that makes you smarter after you read it.”—Comics Bulletin

“Hellboy’s tour through the underworld is enlightening and atmospheric. This issue is about the story as much as it is about how to tell it. Hellboy in Hell is shaping up to be something not soon forgotten by readers.”—Comic Book Resources

“Mignola’s artwork brings the story to life in stunning detail, with his minimalist linework and his bold, heavy blacks. Every page is a joy to behold.”—Newsarama

“Whether you’re looking for a comic that stimulates your entire brain or just a fun, spooky diversion, Hellboy in Hell is what you want. Put this on your ‘must have’ list immediately.”—IGN

“This book is already turning heads and it’s only on its second issue. The story will no doubt increase in pace and scope as we journey alongside Hellboy through Hell.”—Bloody Disgusting

Additionally, the second printing of Hellboy in Hell #1 will be arriving in stores on January 30.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The critically acclaimed and highly anticipated Star Wars #1, written by Brian Wood, has officially sold out of its second printing before the release of issue #2.

This all-new Star Wars series is set in the time period of the original trilogy, directly following the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, and features the franchise’s best-loved characters, as told by Brian Wood (X-Men, DMZ, Conan the Barbarian, The Massive), with art from Carlos D’Anda (Batman: Arkham City). This is Star Wars as you remember it . . . and as you have never seen it before! Dark Horse is taking you back to those heady, adventure-filled days following the destruction of the Death Star—when the Empire ruled, the Rebels were on the run, and the galaxy was a dangerous place where anything might happen.

Praise for Star Wars #1

“With the focus on our beloved characters rather than just space battles (although there will be some of those), not to mention art by Carlos D’Anda and a cover by Alex Ross, this is the most excited I’ve been for a new Star Wars title in any medium in years.”—Wired/Geek Mom

“Brian Wood and Carlos D’Anda truly have the making of a classic on their hands. If you ever wondered if Star Wars could ever recapture that childlike glee of those earliest of memories, wonder no more. Star Wars is back and it’s never been better.”—Newsarama

“As a progeny of the first trilogy and someone who still refers to Episode IV as Star Wars, this book is exactly what I didn’t realize I’ve been missing so very, very badly.”—Comic Book Resources

“It all just feels like Star Wars, and for a franchise that has been around for over 30 years, D’Anda somehow finds a way to inject new life into it.”—Complex

“If you’ve become jaded about the direction of Star Wars in the last couple of decades, this book might be just the thing you need to remember what appealed to you in the first place.”—IGN

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products have announced a partnership to publish an exciting series of works based on the legendary series, The X-Files. IDW’s publishing plan includes reprinting collections of the classic issues published intermittently from 1995 through 2009, as well as creating brand-new X-Files comics to launch in June 2013.

Over two movies and two hundred television episodes, The X-Files, is a juggernaut of science fiction-tinged intrigue, unique characters and carefully constructed stories. The show’s popularity raged into the comic world, seeing successful series mounted by publishers Topps and Wildstorm. Despite this, new publishing has not been available since 2009’s joint Wildstorm/IDW crossover – 30 Days of Night/The X-Files – leaving fans without a venue for the continuing sequential adventures of Mulder and Scully… until now.

“The X-Files is a classic property that helped redefine fans’ expectations for the science-fiction and horror genres,” said IDW’s President/Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “The possibilities for new comic stories are virtually unlimited!”

“The fans of The X-Files have remained loyal to the series since its conclusion. What better way to continue the show’s legacy and give back to them than through new stories in a different medium,” said Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products. “IDW has worked with a number of our Fox properties, and we know they’re going to do great things with these iconic characters.”

In 2013, fans of The X-Files will want to believe in new comics from IDW Publishing. The home of successful kindred series like 30 Days of Night, Doctor Who, and Locke & Key, to name a few, IDW is excited to bring the enduring legacy of The X-Files back to comics.

“Few shows have captured the zeitgeist and fans’ imaginations like The X-Files, and fewer shows still have left people hungry for more in the way this one did,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Our new series will be picking up where the second film left off, which will hopefully be as exciting for fans to read as it is for us to develop.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing has announced Doomsday.1, a new four-issue miniseries coming in May from legendary comics mastermind John Byrne. Harkening back to Byrne’s earliest days in comics, Doomsday.1 tells the thrilling tale of seven adventurous astronauts, who watch in horror, aloft in the International Space Station, as most of Earth is annihilated by a titanic solar flare.

“I’ve been thinking for some time that I would like to revisit a post-apocalypse kind of scenario, such as was seen in my very first ‘dramatic’ work in comics, but this time without the more obvious fantasy elements of that original series (mermaids, alien robots, frozen mammoths, etc.),” said Byrne. “When bits and pieces of this new series first started to percolate around in my head, I knew almost at once the shape that ‘revisit’ would take; something in the ‘All-New, All-Different’ vein. And the first time I doodled some images of my ‘crew,’ I knew I was there!”

When all communication is lost and their home appears destroyed, what are the intrepid astronauts to do? Prepare to cling to a new life in zero gravity, waiting for the space stations supplies to dwindle to nothing? That doesn’t sound very adventurous, now does it? No, the true thrills of Doomsday.1 come when the seven stranded heroes descend back to their decimated home world to confront the dangers left behind by the universe’s cruel ravaging.

“As much as I enjoyed seeing John work on the various licensed titles we’ve done, it’s a continued blast to work with him in developing new concept after new concept this year,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “If Earth has to be destroyed in a flaming conflagration, there’s no one I’d rather see bring that carnage and its aftermath to life than JB.”

This May, a brave new world comes with a brave new series. Don’t be left behind as John Byrne embarks on this fantastic new voyage. Fans will be treated to Byrne on full-color art and writing duties and subscribers will receive a special wraparound subscription variant, packed full of the John Byrne sci-fi magic we all know and love.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Have you ever wanted to know what the life of a cartoonist is like? Well, if you don’t have one handy, why not have Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Wally Wood, Frank Frazetta, Charles Schulz, Jack Cole, Dick Briefer, Winsor McCay, Chester Gould, Sheldon Mayer, Milton Caniff, Ernie Bushmiller, Basil Wolverton, B. Kliban, Rube Goldberg, Jack Chick, Milt Gross, Siegel and Shuster, Will Eisner, Elzie Segar, Harvey Kurtzman, and many, many more tell you by drawing a comic or cartoon to explain about the cartoonist’s life?

Surely, we jest! The bounds of time and space must certainly render this endeavor impossible.

“Nay!” says Eisner-winner Craig Yoe, the acclaimed editor and designer.

For the first time, decades of rare work about their lives and craft by these famous cartoonists has been collected into one mind-blowing, meta-tacular book: Comics About Cartoonists: The World’s Oddest Profession. Get the inside scoop from some of the most lauded and legendary names in the history of comics and learn what truly propels the cartooning soul. The comics and cartoons gathered here are both autobiographical fact and far-out fiction. The fanciful comics feature cartoonists as protagonists in nearly every genre, superheroes, science fiction, crime, funny animals, romance, war comics, teen-age humor and plenty of horror. Yoe has left no drawing table unturned, ensuring this full-color, hardcover collection will be as eye-popping as it is intriguing and entertaining.

Yoe asserts, “Cartoonists are my heroes. That makes this book featuring comics about the ink-slingers themselves drawn by the cartoonists themselves my very favorite book I’ve done. Cartoonists and the people that love them are going to go ape-poop over this one!”

The spectacular hardcover volume has already hit shelves and already earned some high praise:

“The book is fantastic. Unusual stories and seeing them collected in such a beautiful package is a real treat!” – Brigid Alverson, Comic Book Resources

“Comics About Cartoonists: Stories About the World’s Oddest Profession, is a mind-blowing, gorgeous, 4-color look at the “meta” concept of cartoonists in their own comics. Classic comic creators such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Will Eisner, and more present stories about their own unique profession — some cheerful, and some full of pathos.” – Valerie Gallaher, MTV Geek

“IDW Publishing’s Yoe Books, is a one-stop shop for visual thrills about comics and pop culture.” – Michael Dooley, In Print Magazine

Let’s face it, there simply isn’t another lineup like the one in Comics About Cartoonists.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Orlando, U.S.A. — Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is celebrating a major milestone this month – the December 19 anniversary of Robert Ripley’s first cartoon, which was the start of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! brand.

Ninety-four years ago, a young Robert Ripley pondered how to fill the space assigned to him as an illustrator for the New York Globe. Little did he know, the choice he was about to make would be the start of an amazing legacy that lives on today.

He turned to a file marked “Dubious Athletic Achievements,” a collection of sports oddities he had saved. He created a panel made up of nine of his favorite sports feats, and called it “Champs and Chumps.”

It was published on December 19, 1918 and was an instant hit. The cartoon soon expanded beyond the sports world and was renamed “Believe It or Not!”

Ripley’s creation soon had fans worldwide. He partnered with William Randolph Hearst in 1929 to syndicate the strip globally and by the mid 1930s it was published in more than 350 newspapers with a daily readership of 80 million.

Today, it is the longest continuously published cartoon panel on the planet. John Graziano of Tampa, Florida is only the fifth artist, including Ripley himself, to draw the cartoon. It is syndicated by United Media to more than 200 newspapers throughout the world in full color, seven days a week. It can also be delivered to readers daily via email through www.comics.com– for free.

Ripley’s Expanding Empire

Robert Ripley’s cartoon set the stage for an amazing odyssey. The man who invented Believe It or Not! is himself famous for his amazing accomplishments.

In one 1929 cartoon he stated “Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem,” which led to legislation that made the Star Spangled Banner the country’s official anthem. He created a radio version of Believe It or Not! that was broadcast for 14 years. He spoke to his loyal listeners from exotic locations around the world, including caves, snake pits and the middle of the ocean.
In a 1936 nationwide poll of newspaper readers, Ripley was voted the most popular American, beating out President Roosevelt.

Ripley regularly appeared in movie shorts for Vitaphone Pictures in the 1930s and was active on the lecture circuit. He opened his first museum, an Odditorium at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, which was followed by several more appearances at world expositions across the country.

In 1948 Ripley became a pioneer in television, creating the “Believe It or Not!” series at a time when few households owned a TV set.

Sadly, Ripley’s health failed him and he died of a heart attack in 1949 at the age of 58. He collapsed on the set of his weekly television show, live on air, while interviewing a man about the military custom of playing Taps at funerals. He was buried in his hometown of Santa Rosa, Calif., in of all places – the Oddfellows Lawn Cemetery.

Ripley’s Legacy Today

The anniversary of the cartoon marks the creation of one of the oldest and most iconic brands in the world. Ripley’s legacy has evolved into Ripley Entertainment, a global family entertainment leader. The company’s efforts include museums, aquariums, wax museums, miniature golf courses, theaters and books – all staying true to Robert Ripley’s fascination with the odd, bizarre, amazing and most of all – fun.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Ghostbusters are gone, spirited away by some dastardly demons from another dimension. But spectral shenanigans haven’t ceased in the city that never sleeps, meaning a new group will need to step up and don the proton packs. IDW Publishing and Sony Pictures Consumer Products have announced the launch of an all-new Ghostbusters ongoing comic series, picking up where the first mega-hit ongoing volume left off. The Ghostbusters creative super-team of Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening (along with series colorist-extraordinaire Luis Antonio Delgado) return to bust out more ectoplasmic excitement in this second ongoing volume.

“We’ve seen the Ghostbusters deal with a newly minted servant of Gozer, a child-possessing demon, the Spirit of Death, a cross-country road trip and sloppy business rivals,” explained writer Burnham. “But we’ve never seen what might happen if something got the jump on them. This story takes a look at what might happen if the Ghostbusters were abducted. The city still needs paranormal exterminators, after all.”

Ghostbusters #1 marks the exciting beginning of “The New Ghostbusters” storyline, and will include four covers by Schoening, each featuring one of the New Ghostbusters. Additionally, each issue will contain an all-new Real Ghostbusters 2-page back-up story written and drawn by Burnham. Kicking off in February, will the New Ghostbusters be able to rescue their predecessors, or will they share the same fate?

“Editing the Ghostbusters ongoing series for IDW has been the highlight of my editorial career,” said series editor Tom Waltz. “Way back when we started, we prayed we’d be able to finish four issues. And now, sixteen issues in the can and a new ongoing volume ready to rock the world, I’m proud to say Ghostbusters has proven to be a tremendous success for IDW, and that’s completely owed to our awesome fans and the super-powered creative team concocting comic book magic month after month!”

Fans of the series should ask their local comic book shop about the variant Xermanico cover, and the unique variant tribute cover by Schoening, only for loyal subscription box customers.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dexter Morgan is s skilled forensic blood spatter expert with the Miami police department but he’s also the city’s friendly neighborhood crime-fighting serial killer who has to face his greatest challenge yet—a high school reunion. Dexter #1 (of 5), from series creator & New York Times best-selling Jeff Lindsay and artist Dalibor Talajic (Deadpool), brings fans the very first comic book featuring everyone’s favorite psychopath, Dexter. While keeping his Dark Passenger’s bloodlust–his inner demon–under control, Dexter must stop the latest murderous threat to Miami…the Skid Row Slasher. As this new menace racks up a body count to rival that of Dexter, can Miami’s “darkest” hero save the day and keep his cover intact as a normal, well-adjusted member of society?

“Marvel Comics has always been a place where I felt at home. It has been a very important part of my life, and has always been a wellspring of creative and relevant ideas,” says Jeff Lindsay. “I feel like I’m coming home. It is a huge thrill for me to bring Dexter into this very special pantheon.”

The character of Dexter Morgan debuted in 2004’s Dily’s Award-winning Darkly Dreaming Dexter and has since appeared in five subsequent novels, with the seventh novel, Dexter’s Debut, scheduled for release in 2013. Marvels’ Dexter #1 marks the first time a story in the novels’ continuity has been presented in the comic book format.

“Dexter is a perfect fit for comics, bringing an exciting cast of layered characters together with gripping, visually arresting stories ” said Ruwan Jayatilleke, Associate Publisher & SVP, Marvel Entertainment. “It’s an honor for Marvel to work with a lauded author such as Jeff Lindsay, whose ability to both horrify and move an audience is unparalleled. Fans of Dexter will be thrilled by this new story that fits seamlessly into the world they already know.”

This February, join Dexter and his Dark Passenger in an all-new story from creator Jeff Lindsay in Dexter #1 (of 5), available in comic shops everywhere.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW has announced not only a new creative team on their flagship G.I. Joe comic, but also an exciting new era for the beloved heroes based on the iconic Hasbro brand.

Beginning in February with G.I. Joe #1, the anti-terrorist titans will be up against a new threat: publicity. With their formerly secret identities compromised, Duke must lead his squad of Real American Heroes up against the legendarily evil COBRA in the public eye. Written by Fred Van Lente (The Comic Book History of Comics, The Incredible Hercules) with art by Steve Kurth (Ultimate Iron Man, Avengers Vs. X-Men: Consequences), the all-new G.I. Joe is an explosive turning point for those following the Joes ongoing adventures and a perfect jumping-on point for new fans to join the action.

“As a longtime G.I. Joe fan it’s very exciting to be able to launch the series in a bold new direction, with a new status quo that develops organically from events in the current ongoing series,” said Van Lente. “In the first arc, Homefront, the G.I. Joe team gets a new (but familiar) commanding officer, a new (and unfamiliar) public role — and discover that Cobra has brought their war to America in a major way for the first time. We hit the ground running with all-out combat on U.S. soil,” he continued.

This new spin on America’s classic fighting force is also an exciting opportunity for the book’s explosive artist, “It’s G.I. Joe with a superhero spin. This is the G.I. Joe comic I’ve wanted to make for 10 years and the one I’ve wanted to read for 20!” said Kurth.

If all of that weren’t enough, fans will also be treated to eye-melting covers by Juan Doe, Steve Kurth, and Jamal Igle, and a special G.I. Joe “comics history” cover by Van Lente’s The Comic Book History of Comics co-conspirator Ryan Dunlavey. This relaunch also comes with a special treat for the G.I. Joe super fans in the form of a suitably bombastic subscription variant cover by legendary artist Arthur Adams.

It’s a very exciting time to be a G.I. Joe fan, and IDW couldn’t be happier to help rid the world of the COBRA menace.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Coming this February, IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of Vitriol The Hunter, an all-new comic book series co-written by Good Charlotte guitarist Billy Martin and Brent Allen, featuring interior art by Martin.

“This book has travelled everywhere I have on tour over the last few years,” Martin said. “I’ve had a light table and art supplies set up on countless busses and hotel rooms across the world.”

They own the night… they yearn for the day! In this gothic sci-fi adventure, Martin and Allen bring a new grisly horror to life. Set in the fictional city of Basilika in 2127, this six-issue series narrates the journey of Basilika City’s last great hope, Vitriol, as he stands as the only force that can stop Lord Barthus and his heinous vampire regime from overtaking the city.

“Billy is a one of kind. He’s a guy that we hope to be someday,” Sean “Cheeks” Galloway said. “Although he’s had major success with his band Good Charlotte, his love and his drive to draw and to succeed as comic illustrator is mind-boggling and inspiring to us creators to push our limits.”

Additionally, Martin is producing a soundtrack inspired by Vitriol The Hunter. Under the name Villain, Martin has been creating remixes, as well as writing and producing music for other artists. This will be his first official release of original music as Villain, showcasing his dynamic mix of electronic music with traditional film score. The special soundtrack for Vitriol will be available for free download inside the comic.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Continuing their relationship with Dave Stevens’ high-flying hero, IDW Publishing has announced a brand-new Rocketeer miniseries for 2013. Beginning in February, fans of Cliff Secord’s aeronautic acrobatics will be treated to The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror. Written by Eisner and Harvey Award winner Roger Langridge (Thor, Popeye, Snarked!) and illustrated by Eisner nominee J. Bone (Batman/The Spirit), Hollywood Horror is another action-packed chapter in the saga of comics’ favorite flyboy. As an added bonus, legendary comics superstar Walter Simonson has signed on as cover artist.

“You can count the really great superheroes created since the 1960s without taking your shoes and socks off, and The Rocketeer would have to be somewhere near the top of that very short list, so it’s a great privilege to be writing his adventures,” said Langridge. “And I’m particularly thrilled to be working with J. Bone on the art chores. He’s definitely an artist’s artist, in the best possible sense. We’re working hard to give this story our own personal twist without losing the classic Rocketeer tone, so you can expect plenty of fiendish schemes, famous cameos, derring-do, pretty girls and (of course) thrills galore!” he continued.

“Roger has given me so many terrific characters from the world of The Rocketeer and old Hollywood that drawing each scene excites me to get on to the next; and the next,” said Bone. “I enjoyed my initial taste of drawing the Cliff and Betty in The Rocketeer Adventures #4 so much that I’m thrilled to be drawing them again!”

Always caught in the middle, it’s a pulp thrill ride when Cliff finds himself embroiled in a dark mystery in the seemingly picturesque heart of Hollywood’s golden age. He may be neck-deep in mystery and mayhem, but it wouldn’t be a Cliff Secord caper if his sweetheart, the stunning Betty, weren’t steamed at him.

Also flying onto shelves in February is the hardcover collection of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom. Deadly creatures from lost lands find their way to California’s shores and create some awfully hot water for Cliff and friends in this rollicking four-issue series, collected in a beautiful hardcover volume.

For fans of high-altitude adventure and on-the-ground intrigue, there’s simply no substitute for The Rocketeer.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Continuing their ongoing partnership with legendary comics creator John Byrne, IDW Publishing is beyond pleased to announce The High Ways, a brand-new, starbound adventure series written and drawn by Byrne.

The High Ways follows the exploits of a spirited young man named Eddie Wallace. Hungry for the brand of wild adventure only available off-planet, Eddie joins up with a crew of a rock-hopping freighter, eager to see what lies beyond the clouds. As these things tend to go, however, everything in these early days of interstellar travel isn’t quite what it seems as intrigue and mystery abound.

“This evolved into something a bit more like Dan Dare, the British sci-fi strip so beloved from my childhood and early teens. I liked the idea of playing in that “old time sci-fi” kind of milieu, where all the adventures took place within the Solar System, and where life — even intelligent, humanoid life — was to be found everywhere,” said Byrne before adding an extra tidbit for his fans. “I decided this takes place in the Next Men “universe” — though in the altered timeline our heroes created when they wiped out Project Next Men. The time is eighty or ninety years in the Future, roughly, and a central character of the first arc is Eddie Wallace, who appeared briefly in the previous series.”

Another in a long line of fruitful partnerships with the iconoclastic Byrne, IDW is immensely proud of The High Ways’ high adventure and exciting future series yet to come.

“I’ve found John Byrne’s boundless creativity, wealth of ideas and his ability to consistently deliver high-quality comics on time to be pretty much unmatched over the course of our six-plus years of working together,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and I’m happy to continue that with The High Ways. 2013 is going to be a big year for John Byrne and IDW, with John prepping two new series to roll out later in ’13 as well.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The world’s best super heroes—Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man—have all achieved greatness, but there’s a new comic book star on the block who wants to make history unlike any other…and his name is LeBron James.

Marvel Entertainment and ESPN The Magazine are proud to officially unveil LeBron: King of The Rings, an all-new, full-color, ten-page comic which debuted exclusively in ESPN The Magazine’s NBA Preview on Friday, October 19. Two years ago, LeBron James predicted he would win not one, not two, not three … but seven NBA titles. What if he was right? In their second collaboration, The Mag and Marvel Custom Solutions have united to create LeBron: King of the Rings, an epic tale of zombies, clones, holograms, bionics and a star who will stop at nothing to fulfill his promise.

“Collaborating with a creative and innovative partner such as Marvel allows us the opportunity to provide fans a fun and unique way to experience sports,” said Editor in Chief of ESPN The Magazine, Chad Millman. “We are both proud and excited to bring our first ever comic to the marketplace and hope both (NBA and comic book) fans will be too.”

LeBron: King of the Rings springs from the minds of ESPN’s Ty Wenger and Otto Strong, acclaimed writer Christos Gage and fan-favorite artists Mike Deodato, Scott Eaton, Greg Land and Terry Dodson. Featuring a cover by Adi Granov, this is the first comic book created in collaboration by Marvel Custom Solutions and ESPN The Magazine.

“The undeniable synergy between ESPN and Marvel Comics is on full display in ‘LeBron: King of the Rings‘,” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics. “Professional athletes, with their super-human abilities and character flaws, are the closest thing to real-life super heroes, and in the NBA none stands taller than LeBron James. Whether you root for — or against — the Miami Heat in its quest to achieve those rings, this story will make you laugh, wince and cheer.”

“Whether you come for the wit and commentary of ESPN’s basketball insiders, or the fantastic storytelling skills of Marvel’s all-stars, LeBron: King of the Rings has something for everyone,” said Bill Rosemann, Editor, Marvel Entertainment. “A true dream team has assembled to take you on a wild ‘What If?’ journey sure to have NBA and comic fans buzzing.”

This week, don’t miss your chance to get the most-anticipated, can’t-miss insight on the upcoming NBA season and an exclusive new comic book, LeBron: King of the Rings, in the latest issue of ESPN The Magazine.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Beginning this February, IDW Publishing is excited to announce a unique new miniseries by writer Mike Heimos and artist Nick Runge (Judge Dredd, Ghostbusters) Taking readers back to World War II and to the oft-unseen locales explored by the 6th Infantry Division of the 6th Army, Fever Ridge is an 8-part series, a historical fiction inspired by real soldiers and their incredible experiences.

Written by first-time creator Heimos in tribute to his grandfather, a decorated soldier, Fever Ridge puts readers in country with “The Sightseein’ Sixth” and the Alamo Scouts, their jungle commandoes. This is a look at the world’s greatest war from another angle. Exploring General Douglas MacArthur’s campaigns deep in the jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines, this is a story that will explore exotic characters, events, and locales and will unearth a few secrets along the way.

“I am thrilled to be teaming up with IDW to tell this story of ‘The Sightseers’,” said Heimos. “It is one that involves subject matter that has received too little attention in general; almost none in historical fiction and I don’t think any in graphic novels/comics” he continued.

“The heart of the forest can be as cruel and tangled as our mind. Yet, it’s beauty and fire hold the keys to this world,” said series artist Runge. “The War is only one of the many faces that shape this tale of survival and suspense in the dark corners of New Guinea. Our main characters face not only the horror of combat and secrets of the jungle, but the question of how these events will effect the path of their lives when they return home…. if they do… This is a new take on World War II in the Pacific and I’m truly honored to have a fantastic company like IDW publishing this series. It’s a perfect fit!”

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with artist Nick Runge on a number of covers for various books I’ve edited,” said editor Tom Waltz. “His awesome talent speaks for itself and he’s always proven to be a true professional. But, man, I was completely awestruck when he first showed me the pages he was doing for Fever Ridge. I mean, I knew he was good, but not THAT good! Combine that with Michael’s fantastic story and I knew right then and there, we needed to find a way to get Fever Ridge published at IDW — and we did!”

Rounded out by the coloring talents of Jordie Bellaire (The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom, Captain Marvel) and the letters of Brandon DeStefano (Term Life, Harvest), Fever Ridge promises to be as eye-popping as it is vividly thought-provoking.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing, in conjunction with HBO, is pleased to announce that the first collection of the “True Blood” ongoing series will debut in hardcover this December. True Blood: Where Were You? is written by comic luminary Ann Nocenti and series actor, Michael McMillian (Reverend Steve Newlin), who also co-wrote the “True Blood” Tainted Love series. Additionally, the collection includes creative collaboration by “True Blood” creator, writer, and producer Alan Ball. Taking on artistic duties are Michael Gaydos, Greg Scott and Federica Manfredi, with cover art by renowned artist Tim Bradstreet.

“I’m so excited to help launch the “True Blood” ongoing series,” McMillian said. “The TV series created such a rich mythology, the possibilities for exciting stories starring Sookie Stackhouse and the citizens of Bon Temps are endless. This first volume flashes back to where Sookie, Eric, Bill and Alcide were when vampires came out of the coffin while they fight a bold new vampire villain in the present!”

In True Blood: Where Were You? readers will learn the beloved cast of characters’ roles in and reaction to the “Great Revelation,” the day when vampires revealed themselves to the world. Sookie and the entire crew look back and reflect on the day that changed their lives forever. Do you remember where you were the day vampires came out of the coffin?

“Our various “True Blood” miniseries proved so popular, an ongoing series was a no-brainer. And we were lucky to have assembled such a talented team to produce it,” editor Denton J. Tipton said. “This book represents months of their hard work as well as that of the tremendous folks at HBO and Your Face Goes Here Entertainment. I think you’ll be able to see that effort in these pages.”

Loved by fans and critics alike, “True Blood,” the sensually sizzling story of the lives and loves of vampires, mind readers, and all manner of creatures, has become a huge success in both comics and television with a mythology sure to thrill and delight for years to come.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In February, Dark Horse released the historical graphic memoir Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes by Bryan and Mary Talbot. Both fans and critics have celebrated the book’s story and artwork. Earlier this week, Publishers Weekly named Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes one of their Best Books of 2012.

About Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes:

Part personal history, part biography, Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes contrasts two coming-of-age narratives: that of Lucia, the daughter of James Joyce, and that of author Mary Talbot, daughter of the eminent Joycean scholar James S. Atherton. Social expectations and gender politics, thwarted ambitions and personal tragedy are played out against two contrasting historical backgrounds, poignantly evoked by the atmospheric visual storytelling of award-winning graphic-novel pioneer Bryan Talbot. Produced through an intense collaboration seldom seen between writers and artists, Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes is smart, funny, and sad—an essential addition to the evolving genre of graphic memoir.

Praise for Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes:

“Talbot’s illustrations show exceptional dexterity in moving from the monochromatic past to the more colorful present, with the changing color palette suggesting the changing social climate for women. Those looking for a graphic memoir that provides an insightful study of how 20th-century sexual politics played out on the home front will be hard pressed to do better than the present title.”—Publishers Weekly

“Both narratives are elegantly done. Talbot has a keen eye for the revealing detail, an important skill if you are working in comics. She makes connections, but never labours them.”—The Guardian UK

“What really makes this book are the illustrations, from the simplicity of the cover to the perfectly captured emotions on the characters’ faces. These images bring the story to life in a very beautiful and unique way.”—We Love This Book

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The spirit of vengeance goes on a time-traveling journey this December as IDW Publishing has announced that ‘The Crow’s original creator, James O’Barr will be launching a brand-new story featuring the vengeful avian guide, The Crow: Skinning the Wolves, a three-issue miniseries set to debut this December. Fans of O’Barr’s dark signature style will be delighted to see him backed by co-artist Jim Terry with a story woven of the same supernatural mystique that made The Crow a favorite of fans worldwide.

“I’ve been wanting to see a new Crow project from James O’Barr for a lot longer than we’ve had the Crow license,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and what James has lined up for Skinning the Wolves and beyond is definitely delivering on those expectations.”

Set in a European concentration camp in 1945, Skinning the Wolves investigates a world where the dark harbinger of vengeance is dispatched in response to one of history’s greatest atrocities and the ultimate evil that perpetrated it.

“This is a story I’ve had planned for ages; 20 years maybe. It’s a tough tightrope to walk, using a concentration camp as a setting for a story, but I took care in not exploiting the situation for entertainment purposes. I did layouts and a rough story outline, but got sidetracked with the increasing popularity of the original film and graphic novel of ‘The Crow’ and never found the time to finish it,” said O’Barr. “I met Jim Terry a few years ago and was really truly impressed with his Eisneresque style and thought it would be perfect for him. He’s gone above and beyond my expectations and I’m very proud of him and this book.”

“I couldn’t have asked for a better story to work on, and it has been thrilling to see it develop into what I feel will be a truly special book,” said Terry. “There are many, many titles on the stands these days, but I believe Skinning the Wolves will be different from them all–not from a place of hubris, but from genuine excitement over what it’s become.”

Full of the dark, challenging questions and ideas that have propelled ‘The Crow’ to international acclaim, Skinning the Wolves is sure to be a gritty spectacle; one not to be missed by any comics fans, macabre justice enthusiasts, or those in between.

Veteran producer Edward R. Pressman, producer of the 1994 smash hit film ‘The Crow’, together with Relativity Media and Dimension Films, is at work on a reinvention of the original film, which explores its own unique storyline separate from the comic book, with F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) attached to direct from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow and Marc Klein. Pressman licensed the comic book rights to IDW. The deal was brokered by Dan Kletzky of Entertainment Licensing Associates.
