IDW Publishing is presenting another action-packed entry in their line of Dungeons & Dragons comics. The Library of American Comics will be collecting comics legend Russ Manning’s classic run with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ King of the Jungle in 2013, IDW publishing recently announced. Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips is a four-volume series. The first three volumes will chronologically collect all of Manning’s daily black & white and full-color Sunday strips from 1967 to 1974, while the fourth volume will collect the remaining Sunday strips, which Manning continued to do until 1979.

“The addition of Tarzan to the Library of American Comics amplifies even further that the imprint is the premier archival home for comic strip reprints and collections,” says IDW’s President and Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “Russ Manning’s Tarzan run is one of the real highlights of the modern age of adventure strips and we are extremely excited to be the home of its long-anticipated return to print.”

The series of hardcover volumes will commence May 29th with Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 – 1969. Fans will be treated to the first-ever collection of a historic turning point in Tarzan history: when Russ Manning was handpicked by the Burroughs estate to return the strip to its creator’s original vision. Manning put together a dream team of assistants in this historic endeavor, including future comics greats Dave Stevens, William Stout, and Mike Royer, creating one of the most loaded rosters in comics history, and a perfect opportunity for new fans to discover the adventures of Viscount Greystoke.

In his introduction to Volume One, William Stout writes, “Russ Manning was a natural storyteller. He may also be one of the most underrated writers in comics. Dark Horse has announced the promotion of Jim Gibbons to associate editor. Gibbons, perhaps the “comics industry’s youngest veteran,” came to the Dark Horse PR department in 2009, following a brief career in the comics media as a writer and associate editor for Wizard magazine and a contributor to Comic Book Resources. In 2011, he moved over to the Dark Horse Editorial department as an assistant editor.

In his time at Dark Horse, Gibbons has worked directly under Mike Richardson on the Eisner and Harvey Award–winning anthology Dark Horse Presents, and has also assisted on Brian Wood’s critically acclaimed, epic ongoing series The Massive and Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain.

In addition, Jim Gibbons has edited Francesco Francavilla’s bona-fide smash-hit series, The Black Beetle, as well as Tom Morello’s politically charged, postapocalyptic comics debut, Orchid, which wrapped up last week.

“Jim has quickly established himself as one of Dark Horse’s bright, up-and-coming editorial staffers,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson. “His hard work on Dark Horse Presents helped to win us the industry’s two major awards. I am certain that with the same level of dedication he has shown thus far, he and the books he works on will win many more for Dark Horse in the future. Congratulations, Jim.”

This news comes after the departure of associate editor Rachel Edidin, who is leaving Dark Horse after seven years in the Editorial department. Edidin helped shape the Dark Horse prose line with projects such as Ellen Datlow’s Lovecraft Unbound and Yahtzee Croshaw’s Mogworld, while also working on critically acclaimed comics series like Caitlín R. Kiernan’s Alabaster. Edidin plans to focus on work as a freelance editor. Dark Horse wishes her the best of luck and hope to work with her in the future.

Hyperion Books and Marvel Entertainment have announced plans to partner and publish two action-packed novels featuring popular Marvel Super Heroes. Scheduled for release in June, both novels showcase strong, smart heroines seeking happiness and love while battling cosmic evil.

IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products have announced a partnership to publish an exciting series of works based on the legendary series, The X-Files. IDW’s publishing plan includes reprinting collections of the classic issues published intermittently from 1995 through 2009, as well as creating brand-new X-Files comics to launch in June 2013.

Over two movies and two hundred television episodes, The X-Files, is a juggernaut of science fiction-tinged intrigue, unique characters and carefully constructed stories. The show’s popularity raged into the comic world, seeing successful series mounted by publishers Topps and Wildstorm. Despite this, new publishing has not been available since 2009’s joint Wildstorm/IDW crossover – 30 Days of Night/The X-Files – leaving fans without a venue for the continuing sequential adventures of Mulder and Scully… until now.

IDW Publishing has announced Doomsday.1, a new four-issue miniseries coming in May from legendary comics mastermind John Byrne. Harkening back to Byrne’s earliest days in comics, Doomsday.1 tells the thrilling tale of seven adventurous astronauts, who watch in horror, aloft in the International Space Station, as most of Earth is annihilated by a titanic solar flare.

“I’ve been thinking for some time that I would like to revisit a post-apocalypse kind of scenario, such as was seen in my very first ‘dramatic’ work in comics, but this time without the more obvious fantasy elements of that original series (mermaids, alien robots, frozen mammoths, etc.),” said Byrne. “When bits and pieces of this new series first started to percolate around in my head, I knew almost at once the shape that ‘revisit’ would take; something in the ‘All-New, All-Different’ vein. And the first time I doodled some images of my ‘crew,’ I knew I was there!”

When all communication is lost and their home appears destroyed, what are the intrepid astronauts to do? Prepare to cling to a new life in zero gravity, waiting for the space stations supplies to dwindle to nothing? That doesn’t sound very adventurous, now does it? Orlando, U.S.A. — Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is celebrating a major milestone this month –  the December 19 anniversary of Robert Ripley’s first cartoon, which was the start of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! brand.

Ninety-four years ago, a young Robert Ripley pondered how to fill the space assigned to him as an illustrator for the New York Globe. Little did he know, the choice he was about to make would be the start of an amazing legacy that lives on today.

He turned to a file marked “Dubious Athletic Achievements,” a collection of sports oddities he had saved. He created a panel made up of nine of his favorite sports feats, and called it “Champs and Chumps.”

It was published on December 19, 1918 and was an instant hit. The cartoon soon expanded beyond the sports world and was renamed “Believe It or Not!”

Ripley’s creation soon had fans worldwide. He partnered with William Randolph Hearst in 1929 to syndicate the strip globally and by the mid 1930s it was published in more than 350 newspapers with a daily readership of 80 million.

Today, it is the longest continuously published cartoon panel on the planet. John Graziano of Tampa, Florida is only the fifth artist, including Ripley himself, to draw the cartoon. It is syndicated by United Media to more than 200 newspapers throughout the world in full color, seven days a week. Ripley’s Expanding Empire

Robert Ripley’s cartoon set the stage for an amazing odyssey. The man who invented Believe It or Not! is himself famous for his amazing accomplishments.

In one 1929 cartoon he stated “Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem,” which led to legislation that made the Star Spangled Banner the country’s official anthem. He created a radio version of Believe It or Not! that was broadcast for 14 years. He spoke to his loyal listeners from exotic locations around the world, including caves, snake pits and the middle of the ocean.
In a 1936 nationwide poll of newspaper readers, Ripley was voted the most popular American, beating out President Roosevelt.

Ripley regularly appeared in movie shorts for Vitaphone Pictures in the 1930s and was active on the lecture circuit. He opened his first museum, an Odditorium at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, which was followed by several more appearances at world expositions across the country.

In 1948 Ripley became a pioneer in television, creating the “Believe It or Not!” series at a time when few households owned a TV set.

Sadly, Ripley’s health failed him and he died of a heart attack in 1949 at the age of 58. He collapsed on the set of his weekly television show, live on air, while interviewing a man about the military custom of playing Taps at funerals. He was buried in his hometown of Santa Rosa, Calif., in of all places – the Oddfellows Lawn Cemetery.

Ripley’s Legacy Today

The anniversary of the cartoon marks the creation of one of the oldest and most iconic brands in the world. Ripley’s legacy has evolved into Ripley Entertainment, a global family entertainment leader. The Ghostbusters are gone, spirited away by some dastardly demons from another dimension. But spectral shenanigans haven’t ceased in the city that never sleeps, meaning a new group will need to step up and don the proton packs. IDW Publishing and Sony Pictures Consumer Products have announced the launch of an all-new Ghostbusters ongoing comic series, picking up where the first mega-hit ongoing volume left off. The Ghostbusters creative super-team of Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening (along with series colorist-extraordinaire Luis Antonio Delgado) return to bust out more ectoplasmic excitement in this second ongoing volume.

“We’ve seen the Ghostbusters deal with a newly minted servant of Gozer, a child-possessing demon, the Spirit of Death, a cross-country road trip and sloppy business rivals,” explained writer Burnham. “But we’ve never seen what might happen if something got the jump on them. This story takes a look at what might happen if the Ghostbusters were abducted. The city still needs paranormal exterminators, after all.”

Ghostbusters #1 marks the exciting beginning of “The New Ghostbusters” storyline, and will include four covers by Schoening, each featuring one of the New Ghostbusters. Additionally, each issue will contain an all-new Real Ghostbusters 2-page back-up story written and drawn by Burnham. Kicking off in February, will the New Ghostbusters be able to rescue their predecessors, or will they share the same fate?

IDW has announced not only a new creative team on their flagship G.I. Joe comic, but also an exciting new era for the beloved heroes based on the iconic Hasbro brand.

Coming this February, IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of Vitriol The Hunter, an all-new comic book series co-written by Good Charlotte guitarist Billy Martin and Brent Allen, featuring interior art by Martin.

Continuing their relationship with Dave Stevens’ high-flying hero, IDW Publishing has announced a brand-new Rocketeer miniseries for 2013. Beginning in February, fans of Cliff Secord’s aeronautic acrobatics will be treated to The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror. Written by Eisner and Harvey Award winner Roger Langridge (Thor, Popeye, Snarked!) and illustrated by Eisner nominee J. Bone (Batman/The Spirit), Hollywood Horror is another action-packed chapter in the saga of comics’ favorite flyboy. As an added bonus, legendary comics superstar Walter Simonson has signed on as cover artist.

The High Ways follows the exploits of a spirited young man named Eddie Wallace. As these things tend to go, however, everything in these early days of interstellar travel isn’t quite what it seems as intrigue and mystery abound.

“This evolved into something a bit more like Dan Dare, the British sci-fi strip so beloved from my childhood and early teens. I liked the idea of playing in that “old time sci-fi” kind of milieu, where all the adventures took place within the Solar System, and where life — even intelligent, humanoid life — was to be found everywhere,” said Byrne before adding an extra tidbit for his fans. “I decided this takes place in the Next Men “universe” — though in the altered timeline our heroes created when they wiped out Project Next Men. The time is eighty or ninety years in the Future, roughly, and a central character of the first arc is Eddie Wallace, who appeared briefly in the previous series.”

IDW Publishing has announced the launch of IDW Limited, a new division that will specialize in producing high-end, collectible editions of their wide catalog of books. Catering to the loyal and committed fans that have helped make IDW a success, IDW Limited books will feature unique elements like original sketches and creator signatures on luxuriously designed packaging not available anywhere else.

These top-of-the-line rarities will aim to enhance and expand existing books, providing beautiful reading and collecting experiences fans will be proud to display on their shelves.The first book offered from IDW Limited will be the four-issue collection of IDW’s best-selling new series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vol. 1, Change Is Constant.

The Deluxe Limited Edition will be released in three tiers, each with extremely low quantities available exclusively through the IDW limited website, IDWLimited.com. Fans can expect original signatures from TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, series artist Dan Duncan, and series writer Tom Waltz, as well as unique sketch art from Dan Duncan packaged with each book in a specially hand-constructed, deluxe case.

• Blue Label Edition, the rarest tier being offered, is limited to only 10 copies. For this special version, series artist Dan Duncan will be creating full-color illustrations of the entire Turtle team in action. Each book is packaged with the IDW Limited cover inside a hand-built tray case.

The spirit of vengeance goes on a time-traveling journey this December as IDW Publishing has announced that ‘The Crow’s original creator, James O’Barr will be launching a brand-new story featuring the vengeful avian guide, The Crow: Skinning the Wolves, a three-issue miniseries set to debut this December. Fans of O’Barr’s dark signature style will be delighted to see him backed by co-artist Jim Terry with a story woven of the same supernatural mystique that made The Crow a favorite of fans worldwide.

“I’ve been wanting to see a new Crow project from James O’Barr for a lot longer than we’ve had the Crow license,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and what James has lined up for Skinning the Wolves and beyond is definitely delivering on those expectations.”

Set in a European concentration camp in 1945, Skinning the Wolves investigates a world where the dark harbinger of vengeance is dispatched in response to one of history’s greatest atrocities and the ultimate evil that perpetrated it.

“This is a story I’ve had planned for ages; 20 years maybe. It’s a tough tightrope to walk, using a concentration camp as a setting for a story, but I took care in not exploiting the situation for entertainment purposes. I did layouts and a rough story outline, but got sidetracked with the increasing popularity of the original film and graphic novel of ‘The Crow’ and never found the time to finish it,” said O’Barr. “I met Jim Terry a few years ago and was really truly impressed with his Eisneresque style and thought it would be perfect for him. He’s gone above and beyond my expectations and I’m very proud of him and this book.”

“I couldn’t have asked for a better story to work on, and it has been thrilling to see it develop into what I feel will be a truly special book,” said Terry. “There are many, many titles on the stands these days, but I believe Skinning the Wolves will be different from them all–not from a place of hubris, but from genuine excitement over what it’s become.”

Veteran producer Edward R. Pressman, producer of the 1994 smash hit film ‘The Crow’, together with Relativity Media and Dimension Films, is at work on a reinvention of the original film, which explores its own unique storyline separate from the comic book, with F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) attached to direct from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow and Marc Klein. Pressman licensed the comic book rights to IDW. The deal was brokered by Dan Kletzky of Entertainment Licensing Associates.

Joe Kubert’s Tarzan of the Apes: Artist’s Edition is scheduled to be in comic book stores the last week of September. Collecting the entire four-part origin story of Tarzan, as well as two single part adventures, all adapted by Joe Kubert from the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs stories.

Additionally, a signed, numbered, and remarqued version will be released in October and is only available through IDW Publishing. Limited to 181 copies, and each with a unique head sketch of Tarzan by Joe Kubert, IDW will donate $50.00 from each copy sold of this special edition to a scholarship fund in Joe’s name established at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon Art.

What is an Artist’s Edition? Artist’s Editions are printed the same size as the original art. While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections.
