The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Karthikeyan is not a common name, and in a personal interview the first question that I asked him was if he knew the meaning of it. He was not sure, but he explained to me that this name is common in the Southern Part of India. Doing a little bit of research, I found that it means, “Son of Shiva.”

With only 21 years old, Karthy left his home country India, and moved to a foreign destination in order to have better opportunities. He comes from Chennai, and at the moment he is in Scotland completing his studies in Computer Science.

“The Scottish accent, is very different, it is very strong. At first I couldn’t even understand a word. My school education was in English. I learned how to write, but to speak is something different, it’s not an easy thing.

What gather your interest for studying computer science?

“Once I completed my school, I follow what the majority of students focus on, and that is computer science. It is very common, since you have a wider-range for job opportunities. It’s quite interesting though, I’m not a writer I’m more interesting in the science stuff, and the technical field”.

Why did you go to United Kingdom? “I took in consideration that they provide a top good education. I started my application process at the end of august, which was not an easy task, I had to apply within a year ahead”:

Taking a bit about the cultural differences he encountered he joked saying: ” It is a completely different culture and if you look at the weather is freezing, in my country I am used to 30 degrees”.

Could you tell me some difficulties that you encountered?

“Oh, first of all what was really different was eating. I do not use spoon to eat, in India you use the hands. My first experience when I noticed this was when, I went to a Christmas party, and everyone was using spoons, forks and knives, it was so different, that was my first time when I had to use this tools. Now its nice to start adapting to the culture”.

He is looking forward to improve his English skills, and gather more experience “I’m looking forward for an exchange program, maybe Holland”.

Now he is doing his first internship at Toonari Post, he claims: “I like the training, and how I’m being taught, it’s quite good fun, I’ m doing word press and Php recording.

What is the thing you like the most in U.K?

What I like is that there is no upper class, or lower class, if you go to India you can see people begging in the roadside, you can notice the class differences. If you are in India you do not afford to go to holidays. 99% they don’t know what holiday means. Holidays in India will just be the time that you enjoy with family at home.

A final message that he wanted to say was that: “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard-work and learning from your failures”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

“The ability to articulate myself and to express myself in a precise way to people”, is something Tamer has always paid attention to. Being one of the first Toonarian’s to join the internship with his charisma and great communicative skills has led him to be a leader in his group. He says, one of his greatest dreams is to become a politician in the future, “an honest one”, and he claims that maybe that is the reason why he tries to communicate really well.

His background combines a mixture of cultures and beliefs. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother, being Egyptian, decided to go back to Egypt when he was six years old. As a little kid with an American mentality and habits, he began to grow-up as an Egyptian. When he finished he finished High School at seventeen he decided to follow his dreams, and wanted to start applying himself.

He headed back to the United States, and he found something that he was certain he loved, and that was politics. “I fell in love with politics. I became immersed in politics. The dream of being a politician, usually the lowest common denominator; it’s actually the highest achievement. My hero is Obama. I have been following that guy since day one. If I have a model of how a man should be it would be modeled after Obama.” He says, in following his passion he, Tamer majored in International Relations and Modern History.

I always wanted to reach people, to be able to really move people, to reach the common things that we all have share in life, and to really create something around that. Something people could enjoy and lose themselves in, whether it is a movie, an article, or a Social Media campaign.

Social media is the field he is involved in at Toonari Post, and he always tells his team to “Be bold and don’t be afraid to really show yourselves to our online communities. Recognize the character of Toonari Post, become the philosophy and just be bold and creative in your social media effort, that is the perfect recipe for success. I feel like social media is a crucial tool to reach people if you have something important to say.”

I have this obsession, not just with social media but also with any other medium that allows self-expression and debate. In my line of work, it’s mainly about getting important messages across to people. That can manifests itself politically or in a service I believe in. Kind of like how Toonari Post is a service I believe in that brings important news to people. There is no higher goal for me as a person than to be apart of that. Humans are so busy, but if I can give you entertainment, a break, and help you explore something different or something new, that I think is the highest calling for any human being, that sharing experience among us, to create things, I love that creation of things.

“There is nothing that works with my character more than social media, even for a company selling a brand it’s a chance, or an opportunity to become honest, vulnerable and real with their audience. We can make these companies, a little more freaking human, since they have mostly been so divided from the rest of us, reaching us solely through focus groups. That won’t get the same life force that you get with social media. They are slowly but surely realizing that they have to change as well, they have to be honest, real, vulnerable, so people can actually care enough to follow them.

If you are honest, if you do try, you can create a better company; you can have a better reason to get out of bed and work. People in Social Media will believe in you, if you don’t turn your back and instead maintain your integrity and honesty.

What do you think is the purpose of Toonari Post?

“The purpose is what is being written and published here each and every day. Just seeing all the articles and the issues that we cover here. Important things? Yes! And fun things? yes! It is a place where people can come and get their daily dose of news. It is a human thing to do. Being part of the team and being part of supplying the news is a lot of fun. The team is quite amazing. It’s going to reach a point in the future where we have a very engaged and very large online community.

I fell in love with Toonari, and I don’t want to leave it, it’s like our baby really!

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Still in college, but with many dreams ahead, Henry, is glad that he is finishing his college career as he explained how he has tried many different fields. “I am entering my treaty, we have three divisions. Division I, you take a wide variety of courses. Division II, you narrow your focus and you take more specific courses and Division III is your major.”

He finds the sports area really interesting, and he comments how his major will focus around sports: “I’ve started to organize my major. I’m going to write two separate papers, one titled: ” Concussions and retired NFL player health Benefits” and the second paper focuses on the question, can the sports industry be economically profitable and socially valuable?

As any other young student he wants to take advantage of internships in order to learn and gather experience in different fields. Before joining Toonari Post, he had already done different internships. He explains, “I’ve done internships in the past, I worked for the Portland Pirates, which is a minor league hockey team, affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres, in Portland, Maine.

He says that he joined this internship because he wanted to try something different. “I always wanted to experience what it is to be a journalist. I’ve written papers for school but I haven’t really had the chance to do an internship about doing journalism. I am curious with the writing industry, and journalism. I love to read the newspaper, and what grabs my attention is to be behind the scenes, and experience how things happen here every day.

He just wants to take advantage of this experience, he says: “I just want to learn as much as possible, learn to write better. When I write, I write a lot, it’s tough to narrow it down. I love the sports aspect, but I am also interested in Politics.

Since Toonari Post has a wide-range of members from all parts of the world, this is a pretty cool working experience as well, to get to know different cultures. Henry comments, “I feel gratified, since I haven’t really talked to people from many different countries, I haven’t had that experience before.”

Ending his interview he wanted to share a message out there, “Follow your passion, and follow what you want to do. Whatever you passion is it is important”.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

An Ecuadorian native, Ximena is a PR and advertisement major in Spain but when she came to Mainz, Germany for her exchange, she decided to take up an internship. “When I came to Mainz I thought ‘well this is my last year of study, I should get some work experience’ and I started applying. But it was really tough, I applied so many different places, I can’t believe it, and I don’t even remember applying to Toonari to be honest.”

She caught a break in her search one evening. “I remember sitting at home one evening and I got a call. I actually thought it was my mother! Because it was an unknown number but then it was a woman named Sherol who explained that something called Toonari News and Media was interested in my application. She then handed me to Karhrman and we spoke in German – I have no idea where that came from, I was suddenly fluent in German but I think it was from the excitement and just being nervous on the phone.”

At the beginning she thought the virtual element was a bit weird and she confesses that her roommates were looking at her talking to her computer every night thinking “what are you doing…” – but then it got better. “We started out on Africana Online and I got the chance to work on my own articles. It was really cool to see your work being published. But it was also amazing to experience the team developing – in 2 1/2 months the amount of people I work with has just tripled, I mean it just grows and grows.”

Ximena explains all the positive sides of her work. “It’s cool cause you get to decide for yourself how much responsibility you want. You can really do what you like and it’s cool talking to people from around the world. It’s actually amazing, because I meet new people every week and we’re just becoming this huge community.”

As a PR and advertisement major, the journalistic streak might seem a little off topic but Ximena’s personality can answer to her choice. “I applied for anything related to my studies but when this opportunity at Toonari came up I thought ‘I’d just take it’. I didn’t know what it was gonna be about but as I got into it, it just got more exciting and more serious – we moved from writing to developing the new website, doing interviews, starting our podcast service and I’m just taking it all in as an opportunity to experience many different fields.”

“At first, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to be a journalist but as I got to explore the different sides of it, I’ve really started to love it. Particularly the HotTOpic podcast! The process of research, recording and the editing is so interesting. When I was a kid I had a dream of doing movie trailers because I just love visual productions but obviously that wasn’t what I ended up studying. However, with the plans to expand Toonari into a TV channel and video casts, I’m looking forward to work towards more TV journalism than writing.”

“I’ve always just liked to explore new things and even when we are under a lot of pressure from the projects we already have – I just want more! I can’t help it, if it’s new; I want to take part in it.”

“As an intern, you really get to explore all the areas of this field and it’s like a table of choices; you get a taste of the menu and then you just choose your plate. This is really going to help me in the future.”

Ximena’s final point was that it’s all a learning process. “When I did my first interview alone, of a group of Caltech students, we had some problems arranging a time and when it finally happened, I was told it was a different team than first expected. I then prepared a new set of questions but when we started the interview and they started talking, man… I had no idea what they were talking about! I was really confused but then I realized that there had been a mix up and that these guys were actually the original team. My heart started beating, I thought I was gonna die! I did my best to save the mix up but when he wrote to Brian ‘thank you for a great interview’ I just thought ‘oh god….’.”

You feel small, and then you start feeling bigger, you feel valuable”

This Toonarian was born and raised in Sardinia, Italy. Since she started this adventurous journey she has learned a lot. Francesca has always lived in Sardinia, but this has not limited her dreams of going abroad. On two occasions she went to Hungary. She did her Erasmus for one semester in Budapest. She likes to experience new cultures, and live through new things. She says: ” I never feel I have just one home”. She explains her desire to leave a small universe for a bigger one; “I love my small universe of course, but I know that I have too many limitations here. I’m always looking outside, to go to a bigger universe.”

As any other young person, she had a dream. “I was fascinated by the idea of being a journalist, I had to see how it would go, since it is not easy to find a job in this area.” She started searching for an internship abroad, checking several websites, created a profile where the companies could see her curriculum. She recalls signing up for Europlacement.com and after two months, and unexpected email surprised her, welcoming her into an internship.

She noticed that the internship was located in United States, but soon realized that this was not an ordinary internship. It was going to be a virtual experience. Francesca thought at this moment, “Everything just sounded so new I have never heard of this kind of internship online”

“When I explained to my friends and family about the new internship I had found everyone was surprise. They asked me questions but I wasn’t sure how to answer since the experience was pretty new to me too, and I didn’t know all the incredible things you are able to do. The first thing that came to my mind was just to tell that it was cool since you talked to your colleagues, learn and work at home. This actually seemed less interesting but it turned out to be the great thing about our internship. That it’s not possible to put it into words because it offers something else that you only experience by being part of it.

Once she started, she recalls despite being full of excitement, she was also nervous since she didn’t know exactly how it was going to develop. Especially because this is not exactly how one would picture the first day of work. Actually, you will meet and talk to people, but not physically. Once the meeting started she realized something amazing, “the first training, it wasn’t like a regular lesson where you write down things and are assigned work, but it was more open. The interns could actually exchange their ideas, learn new things, and learn to create their projects with their own suggestions.”

“At the beginning, Toonari Post was about to be launched. We were assigned to write a lot of articles. I was like ‘O.M.G! I have to do a lot of things in such a small period of time’. I thought I have to do my best because it was at the start. I was a bit nervous but now I feel more comfortable and I trust myself more because I found myself achieving things that brought me inner satisfactions and made me proud.”

The internship surprised her in a way that helped discover inner talents and taste of different fields. She explained that having her article published on the website the first time was a very enriching feeling. “It was so strange – I believed I could do it, but I had never actually tried. When I started I said ‘okay I will try, but it is hard to come up with the most important thing that I should write’. But mainly just trying to be clear, putting altogether the ideas and hoping that people can actually understand what I really mean”.

She asked for her friends’ opinion, in order to make sure that her article was understandable. “After the first, second and third article you see the audience that likes or criticizes what you wrote, and this is the main thing that brings me motivation to keep going, and writing.

Regarding the English language, the explains what it is like to come from Italy. “At the University I don’t write in English that often, mostly just for the exams. But as part of this internship, language is another field that it includes for me, and it helps me learn and practice the English language. I can learn about languages, journalism and communication all at the same time!”

“It is not so easy to find a job that you really like. And that makes you happy. The best part of it is the relationships we are building between us. Because of the great work atmosphere, relations between your colleagues and your boss go hand in hand.”

The virtual element is a different way of working.” We’ve never seen each other; we don’t have the visual impact that often can generate different perceptions. When you meet a person, of course you judge their physical appearance and even if you don’t want to, you do it. We know each other through conversation, expressing our ideas, and collaborating. Therefore, we can truly express ourselves from our insides, leaving apart physical judgments.”

“I think we should explain to new interns, that you really create something through your work and effort. And when you see the results, you think ‘I did it! It is my job!’. You really feel it is something of yours! When you start, you don’t have any idea if you would like it or not, but if you stay, you find in yourself the right things, discover the field you like to work on. You make connections, and you even learn how to create these connections. Maybe you think that a small topic about a small event can be indifferent, but then you understand that if you take this small thing and you connect it with a bigger thing it becomes a global thing.”

Also, the international aspect is something that has grabbed her attention. “Since we are all international, this is a way of exploring, maybe even more depths of a person coming from the other side of the world, than from a person that lives next to you. It is a good opportunity to learn, by exchanging opinions, ideas, and points of view. You learn what people think and how they share things in common. You compare, and understand certain cultural differences and mentality that probably you could have never get to experience without living your country.

Toonari post is a good platform; one that could grow into something new and innovative. You can trust me when I say that it is a good place to get your message out there in the world. If there is something that is not being covered out there, tell us about it and we will cover it.

Opportunities in life come and go, but the people we meet can make an unexpected offer to us, that could bring along a great experience. This was the case with Erin Chavez. Erin was born in a small town in Western New York where she studied Psychology. After getting her Bachelors degree, she moved to Florida to go to graduate school and begin to work in a Mental house center where she met Sherol.

After some time, Sherol contacted Erin again and made her a proposition. “ I was pretty burned out of the mental house center, and Sherol proposed to me the idea of starting work with Africana Online. This was the first Project before Toonari Post was created, and all I started doing is writing 2 articles per day, and submitting them to the website. It used to take me all night to write two or three articles, but now ‘m doing even nine articles per day. The more you do, the more you know to do your research, and everything becomes easier and faster”.

She started writing and accomplishing one of her dreams. “ Since I was 6 years old, I always wanted to be a writer. I would sit in my room and write stories. But I guess the only thing that backed me a bit was the thought that journalists don’t make much money. But now I’m back, this is my first real journalist experience. We just get to do our own thing, and if you need support you have it there, you just need to go online and reach out for your colleagues.

Even thought she has never worked for a newspaper, or had a journalist job in previous jobs, Erin is glad to have joined Toonari. “It is a great experience, because any job you apply to in the future as a journalist will want to see some published work. This is something that people admire and think, ‘ooh what is this’”.

When you write, you wait for an article to be exposed and discover by the readers. “I was exited about the articles that were linked to a big blog. I’m really exited about those. Information cannot get anywhere if its not being shared. If you get that buzz going it can get bigger”.

“I like that I feel that it can really do something. I love having all these interns from all parts of the world. We are working from all over. And if I get the chance to travel now I have friends to visit.”

Rafael comes from Paris, and loves to travel and discover new cultures. In a personal interview he said, ” I spend four months in Sahara in Niger. I’ve also been to Laos and Panama. What I love the most about traveling is the free drinks you get on the airplane! (Joking) You discover so many things, you get to eat and try new food, eat in restaurants any time, you get to see new girls in bikini, which is always nice for a man! I guess. But the most important thing is that every time I travel I have the opportunity to feel alive, because I am always learning and discovering new things. For me, if I’m traveling its like I have more chance that something will happen to my life, sometimes something great, sometimes something bad.

What is it for you being part of ToonariPost? ” I always saw this like a bright light. I just think this is an interesting experience, cause you get to know about other cultures. You are just discovering, and when you discover you make your own hypothesis and theories. It’s like being a scientist but without the boring part!”

When you write you are making sociological comparisons within cultures. How did you come up with this idea? “Well, I don’t believe in politics anymore. They are always the same thing; the economics don’t grab my interest. It’s always about capitalism and liberalism. The only thing that will, and keeps changing, is the culture. The culture is what makes something different, and there is much more to talk about when you are talking about culture.

What things do you take into consideration when you write? “Anything is funny, and you can even explain why the German, for example, behave this way and not that way…why the Panamanian behave this way and not the Ecuadorian’s way. With this aspect you are able to understand why this man is acting in a certain manner, I’m not taking this like a criticism cause nothing is wrong. You just get to learn the culture of the other. If something is normal for others and different for me, I have to accept it and mainly understand why they do or belief so. I just try to understand; most of the people offend cultures without any purpose, and they do this just because they don’t know about the other culture really.”

What is a message you want to give to your readers? “Well I would end this interview with two quotes of Shakespeare, that I think when both are connected they intend to sell a very interesting message.

“‘Tis better to be vile than vile esteemed”. When you are doing something, just do it 100 percent of yourself, go for it, and don’t mind what other people say. “My words fly up, my thoughts remain below, Words without thoughts never in Heaven go”. Body and mind have to be connected 100 percent, if you just are sure 99% about something don’t do it, cause this little one percent can change anything.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

She was born and raised in Denmark, and as a child she discovered how much she enjoyed reading. “I am a big fan of reading all kind of stuff. When I learned how to read, I would always read everything.”

Becoming a journalist was always a secret dream of hers, but after reasoning that it would be hard to find a job in such a competitive field, she decided to study a less career specific subject and got her bachelor degree in international studies and English. Once finished, she went to England to study International affairs: “I had already realized that I didn’t want to be a politician, but I was interested in the events and developments on the global scene and wanted to tell people about them”.

Her search for a suitable internship began like many others. “I submitted my CV online and Toonari Media found it! I started out hoping it was going to be interesting. I didn’t have any expectations, but as the days passed by my expectations were fulfilled beyond my imagination.”

She was one of the first interns to join Toonari Post. Even though her adventure has just begun, the past months have already challenged her. “I had a hard time when we started doing interviews. I think I could be a journalist in the future though. I have an interest that is big enough for me to pursue a stories. And Toonari Post is one of the best mediums for this. They give us some guidelines but they allow us to explore the field ourselves, give us responsibility and make us want to improve. I always feel I want to contribute to Toonari. In other work environments you can’t expect this freedom. It really helps your motivation to get involved as a writer, as an editor.”

Also, the internship at Toonari Post offered her a virtual experience that other newspapers seem unable to provide. “I think it’s the future. It was something that I hadn’t thought about before. The more I worked with people virtually, the more I got used to it. You get to meet people from so many different countries. Get a completely new perspective on collaboration, and you don’t really expect it, everything just comes to you. You just open the door.”

Claudia shared one of her experiences, when she did her first interview with an Openleaks member. “The whole thing about getting the interview with Mr. Snorrason, finding a contact from Openleaks, was an expedition. The task of finding a way to reach the organisation seemed impossible. We ended up getting immensely frustrated. Finally, when it happened it was such a relief but you realize that the process is so long – you interview, you hear the recorded version and you think, “do we really sound like that?” Then you transcribe the whole thing and have the audio edited. It’s an ongoing thing, it feels so far away but its not”.

Being part of Toonari is a different experience. “It feels like I’ve worked here forever, it feels like home, but despite this familiarity you continue to learn new things, meet new obstacles, new experiences – and new people every week, joining the internship.”

The mentoring part of the internship is a very important part as it takes your training to a new level and gets you to advance your knowledge, skills and leadership abilities. “In the meetings, I try to find a road to develop. I realized how hard it is to explain to people what I mean, to train them, and to get them to learn and understand. For me it is like trying to explain how the universe expand! Every week there is a new challenge, I still get exited about work and every day is just a new chapter.”

Claudia wanted to share a message to all Toonari readers out there, and new people that want to join the internship. “Our concept has a great potential and once we’ve reached out to the masses, we can make a big deal out of it. We encourage young talented writers to become media active people, and awesome journalists. Keep your mind wide open, and take responsibility for your own fate and luck as a writer. We just need interest, and enthusiasm; this is going to be a big step in the right direction.”

”I hope that Toonari has a future. The website looks great and professional. The users and readers can participate, they can interact with us, and they are able to leave their comments and suggestions, so its a more personalized experience form reader to author and vice-versa.”

Natasha was born in California, but now lives in Ohio while finishing her University studies. She is part of the Toonarian’s team, and is focused on the Entertainment Journalism sector. In a personal interview, she told us her experience so far in her first internship is ever:

How did you get involve in ToonariPost?

Well, basically I went online to surf on the web for a while and look at online pages where they were offering internships. I remember going to internweb.com and finding where I applied for ToonariPost. It was amazing because I just applied with not many expectations at first, and after a couple of days I received the call and I was in!

What do you think about the virtual part of this internship?

I like it a lot, because we do so many different things. It is a really great opportunity to learn because all interns are provided with personalized training. Also, the international side is really great since you get to create these relationships with your work colleagues, and learn about sharing ideas and different cultures. I went abroad, to England and Scotland, with the American High School Theater Festival. I personally love this experience that allows me to learn but meet new people every time.

How would you define your way of writing when it comes to your articles?

I tried to make it as engaging and honest as possible. So many people have different tastes, and want to read cool things. I try to be really entertaining and funny. I know how to do my research now, and every article I write is easier to put things together. We just need to get to the people, and provide them interesting stories. Besides writing, I work in retail. But I need to do something related with writing, because I honestly just love it. I love expressing myself into written words.

What are the things you’ve appreciated the most so far?

Getting to see my work published is something really cool, because I can see the work on my own. The good thing is that it gets a lot of publicity. It’ s something to build my portfolio. And it is great when I Google my name and something pops up!

To wrap up the interview she wanted to share a message to all ToonariPost’s readers out there. “Keep reading because we work very hard, and if you feel that you can do this, there is always a place for you”.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

As any other Toonarian, Philip started this internship because he wanted to learn and accomplish his personal goals. But when launching a website, there is a whole process behind it. One of the main pieces for a business to run adequately is to have a business plan. Every company wants and needs a good business plan in order to get investors and achieve greater developments. Philip, in this case is the person in charge of doing the business plan for Toonari.

He comes from the Netherlands, and at just 21 years old he made his way all the way to United States, and now lives in a town near Kansas. He was looking for an internship, but he mainly wanted to focus on the marketing part. He applied online and one day he received a call with one of the best opportunity for him. “This is actually my first internship, I feel content, happy and I just keep enjoying and working as much as I can. It is not like a common job in an office, when I get my work done I send it, and if I complete my tasks earlier than expected then I have free time to focus on other things. You can do your own thing, be more independent, and get to work and do whatever you need to on the computer”.

With already having an international interest, this is something that grabbed his attention. “The international perspective, I find it very interesting, because you get to speak and work with a diverse mix of cultures and backgrounds. The one thing I do miss, is having the opportunity to grab a beer after work with your colleagues, since this is something not possible. Unfortunately for us, we are all located in all parts of the world. But it makes me think and hope one day we can have a reunion somewhere and meet personally.

The business plan is a strategic part of ToonariPost. “ I enjoy working on the business plan the most. It is important, so that makes me work harder. My main goal is to look for investors and show them what Toonari can offer. The Business plan is the argument in which you persuade people to invest in you. You try to communicate what are we working on, and what we believe in. It is essential for the communication process of the company to find out how to analyze it and how to improve it.

ToonariPost tries to offer a global perspective to its readers. “It is very limited what you get in the news. I think that a website such as ToonariPost, keeps to date what is happening in the world. It provides a broader point of view, and keeps people updated to what is happening at a global scale.

With more interns, editors, and writers, ToonariPost will get bigger little by little. “At the moment, the work atmosphere within Toonari is still flexible, but the older and more experienced it gets, the more rigid and mandatory it will become. As soon as they start putting into place their requirements the amount of interns may drop, but then the ones that will remain will provide the best.

“I have something to contribute to our company, and if everything works out fine and Toonari becomes successful I will feel content with myself because I am part of it. It’s like we are planting our seeds here and we are just waiting for the blossom.

We help it grow!
