The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

When you think of the world’s greatest and most iconic fashion designers, many names come to mind. Eva Mendes, Matthew McConaughey and Big Sean probably are not among those names. Granted, these celebs dress to impress at red carpet events, styled by the fashion industry’s finest, but do they have what it takes to create successful brands? Each of them is hoping that the answer is yes.

Eva Mendes has conquered the film industry and now she wants a slice of the fashion pie. Women’s Wear Daily has reported that Mendes entered a partnership with New York & Co. to create a sub-brand, Eva by Eva Mendes.

The actress is very much a style icon, stepping onto red carpets in couture pieces by Christian Dior, Lanvin, Gucci and Prada, to name a few. She also has great everyday style, so some would argue that it is befitting for her to create a collection for the masses.

“She has amazing red carpet style and also has a very unique style off the red carpet,” said Greg Scott, chief executive officer of New York & Co. “She has a real sense of self, which will help us in terms of the design aesthetic. When we look at her, she really is confident.”

Of the upcoming line, Mendes says that she has “a ton of ideas, but it’s a bit early to discuss them. [The project] is taking up all my time, but in the best way possible. Everything I see is a possible design. My mind is consumed by it. I’m fortunate enough to travel to so many exotic places. I could find inspiration in a gate in Istanbul for a plate or a blouse.”

Mendes will be heavily involved with the design process and has begun having creative development meetings.

Matthew McConaughey will be designing a menswear collection for Dillards. “Just Keep Livin” (JKL) will feature sportswear and swimwear.

“This is my first adventure into the fashion world,” McConaughey said. “I’m enjoying it so far. I like working on the details, the design, the marketing. And I think the JKL philosophy is what makes it unique.”

The JKL philosophy is deeply rooted in family and honor. The Just Keep Livin Foundation was created following the death of McConaughey’s father in 1992.

“It was about keeping his spirit alive and remembering the things he taught me,” he said.

Sean “Big Sean” Anderson is a still-rising star in the hip hop industry, ready to take the fashion world by storm. The ambitious Detroit rapper recently announced that he will be launching a new fashion company, Aura Gold. The company’s fashion label, “Finally Famous” and its first offering, “The Black Collection”, debuted last week in Las Vegas at Project MVMNT, a trade show featuring up and coming trendsetters.

“Launching my own label is a dream come true for me,” Anderson said. “Even though I have a lot to learn about fashion and the industry, I do know what I like and the small details that make something stand out to me. I look forward to evolving the line with more colors, fabrications and offerings to show the other dimensions of my style progression over time.”

The fashion collective will include t-shirts, pants, sweat shirts, jackets and hats. Fans may view some of Anderson’s designs in the February/March 2013 issue of Vibe Magazine.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Philadelphia, U.S.A. — Loop du Loop has featured a write-up aimed to help those who dwell in small spaces maximize the look and feel of their home. Tanja H. Ellis, who is sought after for both her professional photography and work in interior design, took note of the suggestions.

Small dwellings are no longer considered a negative, especially with the rapid shift in preferences from the proverbial McMansions to much smaller homes. Yet small spaces can pose design challenges.

The article offers up four main tips to get started with maximizing a small space. The first is to showcase height wherever possible. Spaces that offer up tall ceilings can feel spacious when attention is called overhead. A simple way to take advantage of ceilings is by painting them a vivid color. Any homeowner can draw the eye upward by hanging curtains near the ceiling and allowing their luxurious fabrics to fall to the floor.

Likewise, the article notes it is important to create a point of focus. A unique element, like a fireplace, can serve as such an anchor. Another option it to choose a wall to highlight with a bright color of paint or a collection of artwork.

In her comment on these tips, Tanja H. Ellis noted, “Small homes lend themselves to major design statements. One need only keep a few rules of thumb in mind to create beautiful and functional rooms.”

Whenever space is tight, the article suggests staying away from matching sets and opting for multi-functional pieces whenever possible. Ottomans that open up to store blankets and tables on casters that can roll from room to room save space while adding to overall function.

In regards to matching furniture, adding a unique set of chairs to complement a sofa creates much more visual impact than selecting pieces that match entirely. A number of such pieces can be found a thrift stores and flea markets. With just a bit of paint and new upholstery, old furniture gets new life in a small home.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The cut of a suit is almost everything. The material is a close second, but is forgiven so long as the fit of the jacket and pants is superb. In a day and age where a starting suit can be had for just under 400 dollars, skimping on the trip to a tailors just isn’t an excuse. A good fitted jacket can hide a baggy shirt or less than stellar body while fitted pants mold to the body and add height. If part of feeling good is looking good then a trip to the tailors will definitely have you feeling great. The point is to be fitted and streamline, not a shapeless sack or have cut off circulation.

1. Jacket sleeves and width of the pants

Assuming you’ve ordered close to your correct size, sleeves are still one of the most overlooked items to get fixed because not many people know the correct length for them. The convention used is that when standing up, the sleeve should fall just past your wrist, showing some shirt cuff. Additionally, skinnier men should opt for suits that have a higher arm hole. If that isn’t possible, have the tailor adjust the width of the arms so that you can still comfortably cross your arms.

As for the pants, too much fabric on a skinny guy makes it seem like he’s wearing MC Hammer’s pants while too little makes it look like he’s lost circulation.

2. Waist and lower back

The much desired swimmer’s figure can be decently replicated without sweating by a skilled tailor. Not exactly the widest or skinniest man on the block? That’s fine, a skilled tailor can reconstruct the jacket to fit your proportions. Just make sure it’s not so tight you can’t breathe. On the other hand, not adjusting it correctly leads to awkward bunching in the chest or seat of the jacket so pay attention to how the tailor adjusts. Always ask questions, this is your jacket after all.

3. Jacket and pants hem

This one is trickier to distinguish because there is a fine line between being fashion forward and awkwardly short. When standing with the jacket on, one should be able to cup their hands without crinkling the bottom of the jacket hemline. If it bends or folds, it’s too long. Gone are the days where a long hemline is desired. Now the trends go towards appropriately fitted whether you are Wall Street Financier or the editor of a fashion magazine.

Pants hem should be just long enough for one break in the front of the pants hem right where the shoelaces meet the pants. More than one break or an awkward sideways billow will ruin the effect of a streamlined suit.

4. Jacket collar

Often the least corrected section of a suit jacket, enough tailoring in other parts of the jacket will create an awkward fold at the back of collar. Have it altered and then re-pressed into the desired shape. Often, hanging a jacket for prolonged periods of time on a thin wire hanger will change the shape of the back of the collar and shoulders. Prevent this with plastic or wood rounded shoulder hangers so the drape of the jacket is more natural.

5. Shoulders

Arguably one of the hardest features to fix on a suit, the shoulders contribute to the way a suit fits, drapes and ultimately should enhance the wearer. Many tailors will not adjust shoulders without prompting or specific needs. It is not only a difficult job but a bad tailor can make huge mistakes. Too much shoulder fabric makes it look like your father’s suit and too little fabric bunches awkwardly or may rip at the seams. Done correctly though, the shoulders help the wearer portray presence, status and wealth.

The bottom line is that excess fabric is bad, don’t get caught impersonating a flag flapping in the wind. Get tailored!

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Everything is ready. Champagne, trays with Spanish jam, a group of 10 young waiters in uniform and everyone ready to serve the guests. In the entrance, some paper photographs, in which we can make out the name Marie Claire, are waiting to receive the public. Once we have crossed the hall and we go up the stairs coming up to an amazing 2009 David Delfin’s dress, we find at the end of the corridor another perfect dress, a 2010 black Hannibal Laguna’s model with red flowers. On the right, two little lounges.

On the first one, the table with glasses; on the second one, a photocall. Where are we? We are at Cerralbo Museum, where we are celebrating the opening of “Fashion is a dream,” a unique exposition which commemorates the most admired Spanish fashion designer’s 25 years work. The exhibition remembers the work of several generations, since Balenciaga and Pertegaz, to Victorio & Lucchino, Hannibal Laguna and Miguel Palacio. The most of them, were at the opening party last week, and Toonari Post was there to catch the moment of exaltation and enjoyment of Spanish fashion.

Famous people were arriving. Daniel Rabaneda and Hannibal Laguna, some of the first famous in posing on the photocall. After Ágatha follow Amaya Arzuaga, Purificación García, Juanjo Oliva, and many other important figures, everyone answering media questions.

“I still have the same illusion and passion that I had 30 years ago and I think that this is very important in design,” Purificación García said, satisfied with the exposition. “I don’t like talking about crisis, I prefer to talk about changes. I believe that designers have to be more involved, to risk and to insist more on quality-price ratio.”

Some value the importance of the event as the commemoration of 25 years of work, others, the originality of the scenario, and the most of them, the organization and procedure of the exposition, as it is the case of Juanjo Oliva: “It is very well organized. It is a real context, not present, but the museum is a good company, very pleasant.”

Everyone seemed to have fun and enjoy this unusual scenario, a 19th century palace-museum in the middle of Madrid, and among those present we found to Lourdes Vaquero, museum Cerralbo’s director, to whom we directed some questions about this initiative. “The idea is to emulate parties which were celebrated in 19th century…we wanted that every dress fit with pieces of each room,” Vaquero said. “We have an extraordinary potential in fashion, we have to boost Spanish brand through our designers. In the 16th century Spain was the country that set trends in all Europe, and we have to achieve that Spain set trends again”.

The night was full of fashion and glamour, showed for example in a elegant Sybilla dress which prevails on the dance hall as the symbol of this exhibition, and led the way to an exposition that will be open to public in the Museo Cerralbo of Madrid until January 13 to every fashion lover.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. – Fusion Specialties is pleased to announce the Mannequin Design Competition for students. Design students are invited to participate in a contest exploring the world of mannequin design through the eyes of a singular brand. Winning designs will be showcased at 2013 GlobalShop in Chicago and in DDI magazine among other venues. The grand prizewinner will see his or her designs sculpted and manufactured in full size; the winning collection will be displayed in the Fusion booth at GlobalShop 2013 and also highlighted at a jcpenney store in the New York City area. Cash awards will be provided to the top five designs.

Mannequins present an opportunity to connect with the consumer on a deeply emotional level. Mannequins should be aspirational while at the same time reflecting the brand’s fit and look. In this competition, students will be challenged to explore how to meld these criteria into a mannequin collection that is innovative, exciting and reflects the designated brand appropriately.

Fusion Specialties, one of the world’s largest designer and manufacturer of custom mannequins, has designed multiple collections for jcpenney, Nike, Gap, Guess, Disney, Chico’s, and Armani A/X among others. Their approach is to personify a retailer’s brand identity through the design of custom mannequins and this particular design challenge will ask student participants to do the same. Students will be designing for some of the most popular private label brands sold at jcpenney, and will be required to understand the history, demographic and target customer for that brand. All of this must be reflected in the proposed design for the mannequins.

Prizes:

$2500 in cash to be awarded to the Grand Prize winner along with publication in DDI magazine, actual development and production by Fusion of the winning mannequin design, showcase at 2013 GlobalShop, feature on the Fusion website, and more.

$1000 in cash to be awarded to 2nd place winner along with designs showcased in DDI magazine, at 2013 GlobalShop, and on the Fusion website.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The change from Fall to Winter will soon be upon us and as the weather changes, so do clothing and accessories. Scarves and hats start coming out and later on, gloves as well. Boots replace regular shoes and long coats replace blazers or jackets. A few things to get yourself fashion ready and in the Winter mind set are included here. Small things done now will save time, money and angry frustration when the weather becomes cold.

1. New Apparel

Winter is a harsh environment and many people tend to treat their clothing roughly and forget to take care of them in the rush to get warm. Check on your current boots, shoes and coats to see if they require repairing or replacement. Similar to tires on a car, checking them now saves a lot of time and frustration later. Winter is not the time to skimp on new boots or other essentials that are in need of repairs, a little bit here and there goes a long way to a less miserable holiday season.

2. Dry Cleaners

Sending items to the dry cleaner is an optional idea for those luxury items in your life that require special care. The one item, however, that should only be cleaned once a season is your wool coat. Too much cleaning will remove and damage the fibers in the coat while too little leaves evidence of parties from the year before. Other items that can be cleaned more often are sweaters and scarves.

3. Protect your boots

Whether you do a quick protective shine yourself or you send them to get professionally done, getting leather shoes and boots protected from the Winter elements will save a lot of money in the long run. This little bit of effort increases the longevity of your footwear and keeps up that new leather appearance. Good boots will last 10 years or more, but only if you prepare them for snow and snow salt.

4. Tailors

Odds are, there are items in your closet that could do with a trim. Activity during summer may have left behind a healthier body but that’s no excuse to go around looking like a shapeless sack in your suit. Whether it’s a blazer that requires a little tucking in or pants that need a little hemming, sending items to the tailor in the Fall saves a trip to the tailor in the harsh and brutal Winter. Additionally, many tailoring businesses get busier during the Winter, so doing it now saves time as well.

5. Personal care

Personal hygiene and maintenance are certainly part of one’s style and shows the world who an individual is. In many ways, more than the clothes, personal grooming and hygiene are the most telling factors about personal style. Some men prefer to grow a beard for the Winter and that’s fine; just keep it clean and groomed. Similarly, skin during the harsh Winter months can become dry between a heated home and winter winds. Keep some lotion or lip balm close at hand.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. — Model, fashion business mogul and international television personality, Daisy Fuentes, announced on October 15, the launch of Luxhair WOW by Daisy Fuentes, a full wardrobe of easy-to-use, accessible, fashionable hairstyles.

Daisy’s hands-on role in designing these wigs and re-creating the latest celebrity trends has resulted in one of the most varied hair wardrobes for fashion-forward women looking to change their look without the commient. “Women have always asked me for my beauty and fashion secrets and I’m excited to finally share one of my best hair secrets with the world,” says Daisy Fuentes. “Having gorgeous hair has never been easier. With my new collection, changing your hair style or color is as easy as changing your dress.”

Luxhair WOW by Daisy Fuentes is a 16 piece hair collection consisting of a variety of wig and extension styles that range from bobs and bangs to pony falls and pixie styles. Each piece is hand woven and treated with Luxhair’s unique texturized styleable Keralon, which makes each synthetic fiber and strand as style friendly and durable as natural hair. Color options are available in 20 shades, matching natural tones with perfect precision, from Platinum Blonde to Medium Brown to Smoke Grey.

According to Michael Kleinman, Brand Architect of Luxhair, “Daisy Fuentes has enjoyed an enduring career for more than 25 years in entertainment. What we love about Daisy is that she understands the value of having the ability to change a hairstyle as easily as changing a pair of shoes or lipstick. A role model for many, we chose Daisy to help design the Luxhair WOW collection because of her passion of empowering women by helping them look and feel their best.”

Luxhair WOW prices range from $9 to $199 and will be available in October 2012 at Wigs.com, independent wig and beauty supply channels, web retailers, catalog and shopping TV.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. — For many, Chanel No. 5 is an icon. For Joe Wright, the director of the new advertising campaign, the scent is “a phenomenon that continues to invent and reinvent itself.” Case in point: the unexpected decision to sign Brad Pitt as the face of No. 5.

Blessed with legendary talent, fame and looks, no actor compares to Brad Pitt. The campaign views the fragrance through the eyes of a man and fits in with the “revolutionary” reputation of No. 5, which broke down barriers, as well as Coco Chanel, a woman who dared to be different.

Pitt follows in the footsteps of Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Deneuve, Lauren Hutton, Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou, and represents a first in the world of women’s fragrance.

“What’s important to remember about Chanel No. 5 is how revolutionary this fragrance is; when it was introduced, it broke all the rules,” says Pitt. “N°5 has always been the most iconic women’s fragrance. That’s what I see being the appeal of this campaign; it goes beyond the abstract of emotion or beauty to evoke what is timeless: a woman’s spirit.”

Film Director Joe Wright, known for his movies Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and the upcoming Anna Karenina, plus two Keira Knightley Coco Mademoiselle commercials, was commissioned to direct several commercial films for No. 5, which capture the memories, thoughts and dreams of a man being seduced by a fragrance.

Chanel No. 5, the world’s most famous fragrance, made its debut in 1921. Coco Chanel asked the great perfumer, Ernest Beaux, to create a fragrance that reflected her very modern fashion philosophy. No. 5 was her lucky number and it was the fifth submission presented to Mademoiselle Chanel on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year, thus a legend was born with the name Chanel No. 5. Visit chanel.com for further information.

In 2009, Bieber became the first solo artist in history to send four songs from a debut album into the Billboard Hot 100′s Top 40 prior to the album’s release. Three years later, his latest album, “Believe,” also has four songs in the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Believe’s” premiere single, “Boyfriend,” hit #1 at iTunes immediately after it was released. The “Boyfriend” video has shattered all YouTube records since its MTV premiere.

With worldwide album sales in excess of 15 million units, Bieber has dominated pop culture and social media for more than two years. He has over 46 million Facebook fans, more than 28 million Twitter followers, and over three billion YouTube views. Bieber has received numerous awards, including Artist of the Year at the 2010 American Music Awards, and was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2011 Grammy Awards.

Mars is a singer, songwriter, producer and musician whose solo single, “Just the Way You Are,” hit #1 in multiple countries across the world and won the artist a Grammy Award for “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance” in 2011. Bruno’s debut album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” has been certified 39 times Platinum worldwide and has claimed two additional hit singles, “Grenade” and “The Lazy Song.”

Mars is a 13-time Grammy Award nominee who has now sold over 45 million singles worldwide and has over one billion views on YouTube. His second album “Unorthodox Jukebox,” featuring the new single “Locked Out Of Heaven,” will be in stores December 11th.

These performances will mark the artists’ first appearances on The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Last year’s show garnered the best ratings ever in adults 18-49 and women 18-34 and averaged 11.5 million viewers.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Africa has served as inspiration to the fashion industry for many years, and it doesn’t seem like that will be changing anytime soon. In 2010 Western designers caught African print fever and painted the runways in bold, colorful ensembles. The trend continued in 2011 and 2012. Do African designers mind that Western designers such as Gwen Stefani, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg are gaining recognition for their use of African prints and textures? Some may, but Gareth Cowden is not one of them.

“Yes, we are definitely going through a phase of influencing [and/or] inspiring the world’s bigger fashion houses,” said Cowden. “But it doesn’t offend me that these people get recognition for their designs. These designers have a better platform to be noticed. At the end of the day they are helping African designers [and] designs get noticed.”

Cowden has been in the fashion industry for nearly a decade; however, fashion was not his original career plan. His foray into fashion was purely out of necessity. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Kinetics and Ergonomics, he could not find employment. Consequently, he began working as an assistant to fashion stylists in 2002. Since 2004 he has worked as a freelance fashion stylist and in 2009 he founded BABATUNDE. Babatunde is a Yoruba name that means “the father returns.” Cowden believes that it is the responsibility of men to care for their families and their country.

“Many kids in Africa grow up without fatherly influences in their lives due to various reasons,” Cowden said. “In my opinion, this has an adverse effect on disciplinary and respect issues later in life. [Babatunde] is also a reference to our leaders to father and grow our nations rather than growing their own pockets. All in all, we need more fathers to father and nurture Africa to where we deserve to be.”

Cowden is not as dedicated to fashion as much as he is dedicated to helping others. His brand, which features hats, umbrellas, bowties and clutches, is made completely by hand in South Africa. This is not done simply as a measure of pride for his native country, but to provide employment to those in the textile industry, which is vital to developing countries.

“This is done in an attempt to revive the textile and clothing industries in South Africa,” Cowden said. “These industries are slowly dying in South Africa due to cheap labor in countries like China and India resulting in it being a lot cheaper to import fabric and clothing than to manufacture locally.”

It is not only cheaper to import fabric and clothing to Africa, it is cheaper to import Asian immigrants to Africa as well. In 2002 Ramatex opened a factory in Namibia and promised to hire 8,000 workers. Instead of hiring locally, the company imported 25 percent of the employees from Asia. These employees were paid less than the Namibian employees and, to make matters worse, ended up in debt to the company. Due to their low wages, the Asian employees could not afford to pay back the traveling expenses that the company had fronted. Ten years later, Asian immigrants are steadily being imported into the country to provide cheap labor.

Many manufacturing companies in Asia and other countries are relocating to Africa due to a rise in domestic labor costs. Africa has low labor costs, in addition to duty-free access to American and European markets under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act. Cowden realizes the importance of manufacturing in Africa. For this reason, he would never relocate permanently.

“It is very important for me that everything is manufactured in South Africa or Africa,” Cowden said. “This is what makes Babatunde a strong African brand. I would definitely consider relocating temporarily. Travelling is very enlightening and helps with learning and growth, both personally and for the Babatunde brand.”

Also important to Cowden is creating awareness through fashion. He has been able to achieve great success as a designer and has been featured in many acclaimed print and online magazines. The audience he speaks his message to has become slightly larger since singer-songwriter Solange Knowles wore one of his hats during New York Fashion Week 2012.

“Due to popular culture and celebrity culture, exposure and awareness grows when ‘famous’ people wear your brand,” Cowden said. “Celebrities are always being featured in the media, so if they are wearing your products it’s easier for your brand to get noticed.”

Cowden is presently working on expanding the Babatunde brand by including more pieces such as trousers and shorts. For more information regarding Babatunde long onto www.babatundestyles.com.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In her verse for Drake’s “Make Me Proud,” Nicki Minaj boasted: “The best legal team, so the deals is ill/It’s M.A.C., OPI and a fragrance, too/Apparel, I’m dominating every avenue.” Well, the animated hip-hop artist certainly wasn’t making those proclamations for her own health. Minaj is quickly becoming a beauty industry powerhouse.

On November 26, 2010, Minaj released her first M.A.C. lipstick in the shade Pink Friday, to coincide with the release of her debut album, also titled “Pink Friday.” She later released another lipstick, Viva Glam Nicki, as a part of M.A.C’s Viva Glam 2012 Campaign. Viva Glam is a line of lipsticks created to raise funds assisting men, women and children living with AIDS. Since its inception, the M.A.C. AIDS Fund has raised more than $200 million for their cause.

Nicki then released her OPI collection at the beginning of 2012. The collection was made up of a total of six polishes—three cream polishes, two glitter polishes and one shatter polish. The polishes were named after Nicki’s album and song titles. Pink Friday is in Nicki’s favorite color, Did It On ‘Em is a lovely shade of chartreuse, Fly is teal, Metallic 4 Life features a black base color with silver flecks of glitter, Save Me features a clear base color with blue glitter and the Super Bass Shatter is a darker shade of pink than Pink Friday, and also has glitter in it.

Most recently, Minaj released the advertisements for her fragrance, Pink Friday. Last month when she first released the official images of the bottle, which is a smaller version of her dipped in gold and wearing a white bustier, she described the smell of the fragrance as “angels playing.” It has since been noted that the fragrance will smell like a mixture of creamy vanilla, juicy fruits and sensual musk.

So, what’s next on Queen Minaj’s to-do list? A clothing line, of course! Minaj has always been able to generate much conversation and debate regarding her fashion choices. While fashion critics may not understand her style, the Barbz love it. Since it is the opinion of the Barbz, and the Barz only, that matter, it is quite befitting that Minaj would give them a collection made in her likeness. Of the brand Nicki has stated that her “biggest goal was to make a line that was going to be affordable to my fans and also rich enough in quality that they’ll feel like they’re wearing exactly what I’m wearing.” All of the Barbz, male and female, will be catered to with this “Harajuku Barbie” collection.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

When one thinks of fashion, several names come to mind. Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, John Galliano, Nina Garcia, Rachel Zoe, June Ambrose and Andre Leon Talley are a few. How about the name Gwenolyn Stephens? Well, for those who are not familiar with the name, don’t fret. Ms. Stephens has set out on a mission to change that.

Gwenolyn Stephens hails from rural Mississippi and has had a lifelong obsession with fashion. Inspired by her mother, who was “always dressed to impress and always had on a pair of heels,” Stephens has created Rock.Paper.Heels., a boutique located in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Rock.Paper.Heels is “the basis of every woman.” The rock represents diamonds, a girl’s best friend, while paper represents money and heels are an accessory that all women love.

Though she is not formally educated in the field of fashion, Stephens has worked extensively in retail and has studied fashion in her own right—presumably with the aid of her favorite fashion publications, Elle and Vogue. One might expect her to feel inferior to those who hold degrees from world famous fashion institutions; however, she does not. She says that although “[my] creditability may be questioned [at times], that gives me the opportunity to show what I am capable of.”

Another issue that many may consider a hindrance to Stephen’s brand is her location. Needless to say, no one considers Mississippi one of the fashion capitals of the world. Still, she will not be deterred from pursuing her dreams on her own terms. “When you’re good at what you do and stay true to yourself, no good deed goes unnoticed,” she says. “No matter where you are from, you will have the ability to shine and make a positive impact in the lives of others.”

In addition to the physical location in Mississippi, Rock.Paper.Heels also has an online boutique. There are a number of things that separate this boutique from others. For starters, Stephens and her staff offer customers a variety of styles. The online store is geared more towards lovers of the urban genre, whereas the physical location offers more sophisticated pieces.

The company also offers customization. They have partnered with a Japan-based designer to customize pieces and hope to expand into national and global markets. The final component that separates this brand from the various others is personal styling. “I have yet to see a boutique that offers styling tips to their customers which includes hair, makeup and accessories,” Stephens states. “We offer the complete package, not just the garment.” Stephens is dedicated to giving her customers all of the necessary tools in order to feel comfortable and confident with their image.

Furthering her efforts to improve the image of her customers, Stephens seeks to open a consultation firm which will be an extension of Rock.Paper.Heels. She acknowledges that image is everything and that it is important to look your best at all times whether one is going on a job interview, first date or to a social gathering. Of course, Stephens has far bigger dreams than styling the everyday Mississippi woman and those dreams could be summed up in two words: Solange Knowles.

“She does everything so effortlessly,” she states of her dream client who she lists as a fashion icon alongside Rihanna, Audrey Hepburn and David Bowie. “She does not follow ‘fashion rules’ and she steps outside the box which is what I love about her. She is a style chameleon.”

Stephens is passionate about her brand and hopes that others will be able to identify and connect with what she is offering to the fashion community. Rock.Paper.Heels opened on September 1, 2012 and is located at 103 West Washington Street, Suite B4 in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Gwenolyn Stephens may be contacted via telephone at (601) 427-5472 or rockpaperheels@gmail.com.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

It appears Prince Harry is not the only one facing problems because of nude pictures – shoe designer Brian Atwood is too. The latest ad campaign for famed shoe brand Brian Atwood has been banned from the streets of New York City due to its mildly sexual imagery.

Shoe brand Brian Atwood was told to remove a billboard-size image from outside their soon-to-open store by the building’s owners due to its content described as unsuitable for public eyes. The campaign poster, which was to be displayed outside the new boutique at 655 Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s Midtown, stars Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel. The banned billboard-image shows the supermodel dressed in a black basque, hold-up stockings and sexy leopard-print high heels with a leg on each side of two bare-chested men. Candice is cavorting with her two nude male companions on a couch.

The owners of the building thought the huge poster, just one of four from the brand’s racy autumn/winter 2012 campaign, shot by photographer duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, was provocative, even though it was showing nothing more than long legs and sexy heels. The shoe brand has now replaced the billboard with a toned-down picture of a woman’s legs, approved by the owners of the building.

According to New York Post, the large-scale advertising campaign not only has been banned from the facade of Atwood’s Madison Avenue store, but from New York City’s ‘Taxi TV’ screens as well. A film version of the ad, that was due to air on screens in New York taxis, has also not been approved by the companies that provide TV content for the Taxi and Limousine Commission. The film features Victoria’s Secret supermodel getting naked down to nothing but for a pair of boots, while she’s watching a wall of screens, showing porn.

Instead, a behind-the-scenes teaser of Atwood’s campaign will be aired directing viewers to Brian Atwood’s official website, where the original full film will play. The Taxi and Limousine Commission’s representatives told that the film wasn’t banned due to their decision, but that private vendors were responsible for its rejection.

This ad campaign is a first for the designer, whose creations are quite popular among celebrities including Kate Hudson, Victoria Beckham, Rachel Weisz and Jessica Biel. The banned images will be published in the September issues of Vogue, W, V Magazine and CR Fashion Book. The designer himself described his ‘the sex is in the heel’ themed film, as ‘sexually charged’. His inspiration for his spring 2013 collection is going to be the ankle, explaining that “There is something so sexy about this part on a woman, and these celebrate that.” His Madison Avenue boutique is only going to be the first out of many around the world.

This is not the first time a fashion brand’s advertisement has to be withdrawn. Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Tom Ford have all had ads banned due to nudity, provocative images, sexual implications and violent messages. The history of fashion has shown that banned ads become a success, so no worries for Brian Atwood.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The world today can tell you the time a dozen different ways in the blink of an eye. Sweep your eye across any room and everything from a wall clock to a cell phone to a television will accurately tell you the time. Wearing a watch therefore is a choice, one which many people choose every day. A watch is a non-verbal expression of style and success, the perfect union between beautiful form and utilitarian function.

The modern man who lives a varied life needs at least one watch, though some will argue that more are required. Hopefully it’s water resistant enough to survive a run through a pool or the washing machine. Whatever your price range may be, there is a watch in every style at nearly every price range to satisfy the discerning consumer.

1. Silver Beater

This is your day to day watch. You wear it everywhere and you beat the crap out of it, there is no shame in that. All metal band and casing with plenty of options to boot, a scratch on the band of this watch is a mark of honor. The watch industry makes a ton of them with different face colors, band colors and date features. Pairing it with a suit or a polo shirt is just as easy as picking out your underwear- just go with face colors you like. Never pick a watch face over 45 millimeters; you are not trying to signal a plane. Chronograph options are also available and this watch will likely be on the less expensive end of the spectrum.

Iconic style choices: Ashton Kutcher, Hamilton Khaki Field King. Leonard DiCaprio, Tag Heuer Carrera.

When to wear: To work, on vacation, to visit grandma.

2. Dress Watch

To be worn with a suit at a special occasion such as a friend’s wedding or your own engagement. Strictly less than 45 millimeters in face diameter and always with a leather strap in the color of your choice but usually try to match your shoes. This watch is classy with no extra dials or hands on the face except the hour, the minute and the second. It may or may not have the date which is fine but diamonds are never a good option on a watch. Your goal is to have the watch seamlessly match your outfit since you’ll be in these pictures forever. You’ll be glad for this black strapped watch for those darker moments in life, in memorial of a lost loved one.

Iconic figures: Jon Hamm, Omega Vintage Seamaster Deville. Will Smith, Hamilton Ventura.

When to Wear: Weddings, funerals, promotions, first dates, prom and legal hearings.

3. Work It Out

This is a training watch with a synthetic band and closure. It will do all manner of scientific measurements as you jog, swim or any other type of hard breathing exercise. Likely smaller in diameter than your day to day watch and with a digital read out, this will help you calculate the work out your body is going through. Other features include a stop watch, lap timer, date, time, alarm and heavy duty 50+ meters water resistance. More than likely, this is going to be the cheapest of any watch to get.

Iconic figures: President Barack Obama, Highgear Enduro Compass. Nicholas Cage, Ventura V-Tec W25-R1.

When to wear: When you get sweaty outside the house, rarely with any nice clothing.

4. Divers

While not indestructible, a diving watch is designed to withstand a ton of pressure, just like the men who wear them. Features on such a watch may include a screw down crown, a double safety clasp, water-resistant to 200 meters, and a unidirectional turning bezel for marking dive times. Many divers’ watches are ISO 6425 certified, but that is up for debate since not all watch brands choose to undergo this optional testing. This test by the International Organization of Standardization for watches approves these watches to be beyond merely water resistant and certifies that they can handle the pressure of diving at least 100 meters or more.

If that were not enough additional features found on dive watches include helium release valve, underwater illumination, various sizing, sapphire crystal faces and the date. They run the range of size from 40 millimeters and higher but bigger than 50 mm is going to cause problems for the center of gravity on your arm. Some of these watches will have rubber straps while others are a more traditional stainless steel. Given the feature set, expect to spend more than you would normally.

Iconic Figures: President Barack Obama, Tag-Heuer Series 1500. Daniel Craig, Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean.

When to wear: When you plan on boldly going where no man has ever gone before-underwater.

5. Luxury

The legacy watch, worn on momentous occasions that you will immortalize in your memory. Expensive, possibly passed down from a father or uncle. A watch of this caliber meant to convey importance and great success. The meaning of luxury notwithstanding, this watch should be of a noticeable quality and origin that will last a century if not longer. Not only does your watch command attention but it should also add to your persona, not outshine you. It does no one any good to wear huge bling at a special occasion; you wear this watch for you and only you.

Iconic Figures: Steve McQueen, . John F. Kennedy, Rolex President.

When to wear: Weddings, birth of children and grandchildren, ending a war.

In the end, regardless of whichever watch you choose, make it situation appropriate. A watch doesn’t need to cost a small fortune to be stylish nor does it need to be big enough to weigh down your arm. Recent watch trends move toward the slimmer side of things with a touch of vintage design thrown in for good measure.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Popular clothing and shoe designer, Jeremy Scott, has found himself in hot water. In collaboration with Adidas, Scott designed a pair of sneakers featuring a cuff that goes around the ankle. Many supporters and critics of both Scott and Adidas took personal offense. Several claimed that the design was racially insensitive, as the cuffs closely resembled shackles, a symbol of slavery. As is common knowledge, shackles were used to confine captured slaves on slave ships in transit to America.

Several bloggers, journalists, on-air personalities and others have commented about the shoe and what the design implies. One such person is Dr. Boyce Watkins, a professor at Syracuse University, who had much to say when images of the sneaker were posted to Adidas’ facebook page. In an article for Your Black World, he states,

‘When I see the shoes, I also think about the ankle bracelets being worn by far too many men who are affected by the mass incarceration epidemic that the White House says nothing about. The black family has ripped itself apart because so many of our fathers, brothers, husbands and sons are locked away in prison, leading their children vulnerable to all the horrible things that happen when the man of the house is not away. I am offended by these shoes because there is nothing funny about the prison industrial complex, which is the most genocidal thing to happen to the black family since slavery itself.’

Dr. Watkins acknowledges that some would feel that he is overreacting; however, it would appear that there are more people who share his sentiments than those who do not. When the post was made on facebook, several users called the design ‘ignorant’, ‘offensive’, ‘inappropriate’ and a new way to ‘promote slavery.’

Adidas heard the angry cries loud and clear. In a statement, a representative for Adidas said that the design “is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery.” Still, the company has decided to cancel the shoe. In the same statement the representative goes on to say, “We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace.”

Jeremy Scott is known to be a quirky, fun-spirited designer. In previous projects with Adidas he has incorporated themes using Mickey Mouse and panda bears. Scott is, in his own words, heavily influenced by cartoons, toys and his childhood. For this particular shoe, he was inspired by the 90s toy, My Pet Monster. The toy is purple and orange and wears bright orange handcuffs around the wrists. The controversial shoe is purple and orange as well and has bright orange cuffs intended to go around the ankles.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Over the years, Urban Outfitters, a store best known for catering to hipster culture and fashion, has managed to offend quite a number of groups including the Jews, African Americans, Native Americans, and the gay community. The last controversy stirred up in April when the company churned out shirts with a six-pointed star on it that greatly resembled the Star of David patch worn by the Jews as forced by the German Nazis. Just 2 months later, they have successfully angered many religions with the use of the hamsa symbol in one of their collections.

The hamsa, also known as khamsa, depicts an open right hand and is commonly used as an amulet in many societies. Throughout history, this symbol of protection has been believed to provide defense against the evil eye and can usually be found made into jewelry or wall hangings. The hamsa, used by the Muslims and Levantine Christians, has also found its way into the Jewish tradition after its widespread use in the Islamic world. Thus, there is a slight variation in their names, with the symbol being known as the hand of Fatima, the hand of Mary and the hand of Miriam, respectively.

The new hamsa designs have sparked the outrage of Internet users who are now circulating the pictures around social media networks. Many claim that they are boycotting the company while urging others to do the same. With words like ‘insulting’ and ‘dumb’ being associated with Urban Outfitters, it does seem like the company’s latest attempt at being edgy is about to blow up in their face. It does not help that one of their designers have apparently claimed to state, “Fashion makes racism cool.”

For some, Urban Outfitters’ use of the hamsa was justified. Parul Sharma, a Mumbai based author, states that while the religious symbol may not be a fashion statement for one person, it could be the case for others.

Mehreen Kasana, a student based in Lahore, Pakistan furiously disagrees. “My religion is not a fashion statement. Do not wear the Khamsa or any other religious symbol when you don’t know what it signifies and aren’t part of that faith. Commodifying someone’s belief is disrespectful and pathetic. The instant reaction to someone’s offense in this case is, “Oh lighten up! It’s just a shirt!” No. It isn’t. It’s an insult and people will call you out on it. If you still choose to trivialize someone’s faith, don’t expect us to be nice,” she says.

Urban Outfitters may have well stirred up another controversy for themselves in an attempt to garner attention, perhaps taking the phrase ‘any publicity is good publicity’ to heart. For a brand so focused on making a statement, commonly showing disregard for the boundary between art and respect for other religions, this may well be the recipe for success.

In previous cases, after mounting pressure from the public, the company discontinued the production and sale of some of their items bearing sensitive nature, although it is still unclear what actions will be taken for this controversial product.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Mýa and Michelle will design new collections for Ghanaian clothing brand Koshie O as a part of “The Koshie O Woman” campaign. The campaign celebrates strong, confident, independent women who possess the ability to multi-task while remaining fashionable. The singers will co-design and name the pieces along with founder and Creative Director of Koshie O, Nina Baksmaty. As part of the Spring/Summer 2013 collection, the pieces will be available for purchase in July 2012 and will be available to consumers in Spring 2013. “The Koshie O Woman” campaign will feature many more celebrity women who embody what the brand represents. Fans will be allowed to follow the process via social media networks.

While neither has been extremely vocal about the projects, which are still in the beginning stages, Michelle recently took to her twitter to say, “Bout to hop on a design call w/Koshie O. Designing some new clothes…..line will be out next Spring. This is a COLLABORATION for charity!” A percentage of the profits from the sale of this unique capsule collection, which will feature custom prints, will be donated to Mercy Corps, a global aid agency involved in helping populations stricken by tragic events in over 40 countries around the world.

Nina has stated that she is sure that the public is going to love what Mýa and Michelle will contribute to Koshie O. She says, “The whole Koshie O. team is excited to be working with Mya. We absolutely love her talent and her fashion and we strongly believe that Koshie O. and Mya are going to create magic together.” On working with Michelle, Nina states, “It is such an honor to have Michelle Williams design pieces for Koshie O. She has been an inspiration of mine from her Destiny’s Child days.”

Koshie O “integrates African themes and aesthetics with modern designs,” according to its website. Founder Nina Baksmaty, who is Lebanese and Ghanaian, was raised in Ghana, but was educated and currently resides in the United States of America. It was her Ghanaian upbringing among traditional dress makers and artisans, as well as being in the presence of her designer mother, which fueled her desire to be a designer.

In 2010, Nina launched Koshie O and has since been featured in the Washington Post and Upscale Magazine, and has garnered mentions from Fox 5 News. Singer Ledisi, as well as model and reality television star Cynthia Bailey, are among the numerous women who proudly wear Koshie O.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

A Chinese proverb says: “A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.” The Austrian Gery Keszler took his first step in his fight against AIDS in 1993, by founding the Life Ball for the first time. In those days, public awareness and financial support for AIDS were still in their infancy. Now, 20 years later, Life Ball has become one of the most prominent and biggest AIDS charity events in the world. On May 19th, Life Ball is embracing its 20th anniversary in Vienna, expecting international guest stars and politicians, such as Milla Jovovich and Bill Clinton.

Life Ball is organized by the non-profit organization AIDS LIFE, whose founders were Gery Keszler and Dr. Torgom Petrosian. Since 1993, the organization has been dedicated to supporting national and international non-profit organizations dealing with AIDS issues, such as the Clinton Foundation. Its chairman, Bill Clinton, is representing the Gala concert “Red Ribbon Celebration Concert – United in Difference” at the Vienna Burgtheater. With the collected funds, Clinton is hoping to reduce the number of HIV-infected babies in Uganda and Sambia.

Auctions, events and speeches are generated at Life Ball every year, hoping to reach a high amount of donations, and moreover, to emphasize social responsibility and raise awareness in the public for those who are affected by AIDS. Life Ball has already become a symbol of acceptance, solidarity and tolerance, and an important voice of and for the affected minority. “HIV and AIDS can affect everybody regardless of gender, age, social status or sexual orientation. This is the reason why it is of the utmost importance to continue fighting the virus.” – Life Ball’s vision and mission

Every year, before the official opening ceremony in front of the Vienna City Hall, the traditional event’s fashion show takes place, making room for famous fashion designers presenting their inspiration from topics of Life Ball. This year, the editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani, will be the patron of “VOGUE Italia hosts the 20th Anniversary Life Ball Fashion Show presented by MINI.” A retrospective fashion show is being expected on the Red Ribbon catwalk in front of the Vienna City Hall, presenting the most remarkable looks from the last two decades.

Last year, Life Ball managed to collect around two million euros for AIDS projects around the world. With its combination of charming Viennese ball tradition and a modern, extravagant and provocative brand, Life Ball is yet again on its way to realize its mission and vision.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

LONDON, UK – If you are looking for summer evening wear that’s on-trend, modern and edgy, then look no further than jumpsuits. This vintage-style all in ones are throwbacks to the glamorous days of disco in the mid to late seventies.

Reams of flowing fabric, chiffon, jersey and viscose combined with deep, bold colors and plenty of metallic detailing and accessories defined the look of the disco era, with at its epicenter. Fast-forward to summer 2012 and jumpsuits are back looking more glamorous and cosmopolitan than ever. Whatever trend you’re looking to tap into this summer, jumpsuits should be it.

Firetrap’s Bini Wide Leg Jumpsuit, at US$129, really stands out because of its midnight blue color, reflective, silky material, plunging v-neckline and wide, pleated legs. It frames and enhances your natural curves thanks to the nipped in waist and well-cut shoulders. In terms of styling, some metallic jewellery, such as a statement cascade or waterfall style necklace platform courts or stilettos and an embellished clutch bag. Big seventies hair would finish off the look nicely.

The lady in red always gets what she wants and you will too if you slip into Miss Sixty’s Red Sunshine Jumpsuit. The bright, bold red hue is arresting and demands attention for all the right reasons.

The seventies styling complete with wide, flared legs, wide and deep v-neckline and loose, flared sleeves to the elbow is glamorous and utterly sexy and the high, belted waist adds shape and definition. This jumpsuit really does speak for itself and accessories can be kept to a minimum. Add some black strappy sandals or peep-toe wedges and a leopard print mini clutch.

Jumpsuits are a style statement in themselves, so don’t overdo it on the accessories front. Let the jumpsuit do all the talking but don’t forget your inner confidence. Plus don’t get lost in the material; add a belt to draw in the waist and create a slim line hourglass shape. Jumpsuits are on-trend and very much in demand this summer and offer a great way of wholeheartedly trying out a new trend with aplomb and finesse.

New Look offers summer styling inspiration from its range of on-trend jumpsuits for anyone who wants to make the ultimate style statement. New Look are award winning fashion retailers, and offer a wide choice of clothing to suit all tastes.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, UK – Maxi and Art Deco Dresses show Romance is not dead at New Look this spring and summer. Last autumn, fashion fell in love with romantic lace; from the feminine and pretty day dresses, to more dramatic sweeping see-through gowns.

This season, spring fashion continues to embrace the feminine in other forms, with romantic ranges of dresses that capture the sunshine season ahead. The maxi-dress, rarely out of fashion, returns in bold and floral print to stand out under the sun. Flattering in silhouette and an easy way to show off the season’s love of patterned and flower print, the maxi dress encompasses everything that is beautiful about spring.

New Look, the high street fashion leaders in trend-setting styles, has long pioneered the value of the Maxi dress frequently lauding it as an essential item for spring and summer. Their current collection showcases dresses that make Romantic Heroines of us all. Their vintage rose print maxi dress and floral border maxi dress show the power of the flower print this season. Teamed with a pair of decadently dangling gold colored chain cascade earrings, the maxi dress becomes regal and perfect for parties, complemented by spring’s latest ‘up-do’.

One can opt for maxi dresses in pleated, patterned and block-colored forms, illustrating how many ways there are to wear this perfect item.

The Art Deco trend was another familiar force on the catwalk during the 2012 season, with more romantic draping silhouettes bejewelled and shimmering. Miss Sixty, carefully selected by New Look for their cutting edge designs, offer a range of party dresses that offer romance with a slighter shorter hemline. Their black Bow Dress is elegantly feminine, with a 20s Art Deco echo that feels very current and topical.

Spring is the season to dress in feminine fashion and make like a Romantic Heroine. New Look’s sweeping floral and patterned styles will inject every wardrobe with a little budding romance.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, UK – Dorothy Perkins has revealed the launch of a new collection entitled ‘A Postcard From’ by London-based designer Olivia Rubin. The collection will appear exclusively in Dorothy Perkins’ top 25 stores and online.

‘A Postcard From’ is inspired by Olivia’s memories of her travels and aims to evoke a mood of summer fun. The new collection will include dresses, tops, swimwear and accessories, all featuring Olivia’s signature prints. In addition to its bright pink shades, the collection’s colour palette includes neutral tones of grey and pastels. With these soft colours expected to make a big splash in SS12, the collection represents a fresh, young point of view that’s very much on-trend.

Known for her distinctive prints, Olivia brings her signature patterning to the collection. It includes an array of jersey with blush-coloured shells, bikinis and beach bags with bold coral designs and chiffon maxi dresses with tropical bird prints.

Olivia’s collection also features many of her signature silhouettes, which have been seen on a range of popular female celebrities in recent years. The collection is aimed to flatter every woman, with sizes ranging from 8 to 18.

The collection is also an opportunity for fans of Olivia to wear her looks at affordable, high street prices. The accessibility of the range and the inclusion of versatile accessories is what has excited Olivia most about the collection.

Olivia commented on her collection: “I’m so excited to be working with Dorothy Perkins and to bring my designs to the high street. The collection focuses on strong yet simple silhouettes, as I always design feminine shapes with an original take, in order to create a versatile piece that can become a wardrobe staple. Also I have introduced jewelry and swimwear to the range, which will be the first time I have added accessories to one of my collections.”

The Olivia Rubin London for Dorothy Perkins collection will be available online at http://www.dorothyperkins.com. It will also be available in the following UK stores from the end of April 2012.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Look no further for the next artistic designer of world famous couture brand, Christian Dior. On April 9th, Raf Simons was announced to become the man behind the internationally popular label, after the position had been left unfilled for over a year.

Former head designer of the label John Galliano was fired from the position after publicly making racist comments during an argument, in which he made anti-Semitic remarks at a Parisian bar in February 2011. In September 2011, he was found guilty on the grounds of racist and anti-Semitic abuse, and was charged with a fine.

Simons landed the position this past week, after front-runner and world-renowned Marc Jacobs turned the opportunity down. Jacobs is also the current designer director for Louis Vuitton.

Between the time that Galliano was fired and Simons was hired, the Dior empire was overseen by Galliano’s former assistant, Bill Gayteen. Gayteen made his final debut with Dior at the company’s 2012 spring collection launch. Fortunately for the international label, the past year has not tarnished the name Christian Dior has made for itself, nor has the empire been financially impacted in a negative way.

Sidney Toledano, President and CEO of Christian Dior, is looking forward to seeing what Simons will bring to Dior.

“I always said that the right person would come along when all the stars aligned and that’s exactly what happened last week. “[Raf] has already begun to lay out his vision for where he can take Dior in the future and I think we are all very excited by that vision.”

One concern for the choice in appointing Simon’s is his difference in his fashion sense compared to that of Galliano. Galliano was known for eccentric and flamboyant creations, where Simons is known for his simplicity in his designs. But Simons doesn’t seem concerned.

“I feel fantastic. It is one of the ultimate challenges, and a dream to go to a place like Dior, which stands for absolute elegance, incredible femininity and utter luxury.”

Simons, who is now 44, started in the fashion industry in 1995, specializing in men’s wear. In Dior, he “will be in charge of haute couture, women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, starting with the couture show in July, while keeping his eponymous men’s line. Simons comes from a modest family and is the only child, growing up in the Flemish town of Neerpelt.

His father was a night security guard and his mother was a house cleaner. Perhaps, this is where Simons appreciation of simplicity comes in? Despite his simple designs and childhood, Simons plans on modernizing the Dior couture line, which Simons claims, he has a lot of appreciation for.

Christian Dior was founded by Mr. Dior himself, as the man brought “femininity to the postwar 1950s, building the tiny waists and sweeping skirts of his voluptuous “flower women” on his obsession with the Edwardian elegance of his early memories of his mother. Mr. Dior passed away suddenly in 1957, only ten years after he created what would now become known as one of the most desired labels of this time period.

While adding his own flare of fine tailoring and linear style to the elegance of the couture line of Dior, it is important to Simons to keep Mr. Dior’s original vision alive.

“I find that period between 1947 and 1957 extremely attractive, and there was a lot of modernity. There was the romantic appeal looking back to his mother and the belle époque, but there was also a constant evolution in shape, changing proportions and the ideas connected to the World War were revolutionary.”

Simons also adds, “in the art world there are collectors, curators and an audience, and they are all important. I am fascinated with what could be the relevance of the language of couture in the 21st century.” And we are fascinated with what Simons’ plans are for the future of the couture and elegance of Christian Dior.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Fashion is an epidemic that just keeps on growing. Billions of dollars are put into the fashion industry annually, whether it is in retail, on the catwalk, or in a magazine.

Fashion is literally everywhere, and the trends are constantly changing and reinventing themselves. To keep up with the latest fashion trends and to see what spring and summer hold for fashion, let’s reflect on some of the top fashion blogs that designers, celebrities and the every day average person go to in order to seek the hottest looks:

Fashion Foie Grass

Fashion Foie Grass is a fashion blog that originated in the United Kingdom and was founded in September 2009. The blogging site features around the clock fashion news of the latest and greatest, the best and the worst, in addition to several fashion articles that are craved and controversial among the general public. The blog’s slogan sums up the entire site with “where the good, the bad and the controversial in fashion news are force fed daily.”

Fashion Foie Gras has been featured on a number of different websites, written about in several print publications and received recognition in numerous “top fashion blogs” roundups. Emily Johnston, the editor, contributes to a number of publications beyond FFG including Cosmopolitan, The Huffington Post, Glamour Magazine UK and Stylist Magazine.”

To check out this website, visit, www.fashionfoiegrass.com.

LLYMLRS

This blog features a range of anything and everything one would want to know about today’s fashions. The site features trends as well as fashion and beauty tips from London resident, Lily Melrose. Lily blogs daily about her fashion favorites and features daily photos of the newest fashion trend. She depicts each trend by explaining how each accessory and piece of the outfit adds a unique dimension to creating every masterpiece on her site.

Lily also features a “week in photos” section where viewers have sent her some of their favorite pictures for the week. This section ranges from outfits to make-up to accessories among an array of other unique things.

What’s most interesting about this blog is that it originally started out as a university project in the middle of 2009 when Lily was a Graphic and Media design student. The site since has taken off into an international sensation as Lily “was able to carve her own niche in fashion blogging by writing a relatable, obtainable and realistic blog that appeals to the everyday fashion conscious girl on the street.”

“LLYMLRS has also been recently being featured in Look Magazine, Company and The Times Newspaper. She’s also nominated for a Cosmopolitan Blog Award as “Best Established Fashion Blog” and Company Magazine “Best Blog for High Street Lovers.”

To check out Lily’s evolving site, go to www.LLYMLRS.com

The Business of Fashion

If the other sites aren’t of much interest to you, here is a site for the business-oriented individual. This site is “an essential daily resource for fashion creatives, business professionals and entrepreneurs in more than 200 countries around the world.” It also features controversial fashion topics and depicts several fashion articles around the globe.

Categories on the site range from “Intelligence” to “Global Briefing” to even a “Photo Diary.” Readers are given the option to share their comments and opinions and can subscribe or follow the site via Twitter. The site was founded in 2007 by Imran Amed, “a fashion business advisor, writer and digital entrepreneur.

“Today, the website has grown to leverage a network of savvy writers and fashion insiders in style capitals around the world, delivering fashion business intelligence on emerging designers, disruptive technologies and global brands that are making their mark on the industry at a time of unprecedented change.”

To check out the business savvy side of the fashion world, go to www.businessoffasion.com.

And what fashion blogging site wouldn’t be complete without a little taste of Hollywood? To top off the hottest of the hot fashion blogging sites is:

The Red Carpet Fashion Awards

The site is updated daily by featuring celebrities, literally anyone that is currently under the media spotlight. The site includes a “Features” section, upcoming events section, beauty section and of course, the very famous, “Fashion Week” section. It even features a section called, “Shop her Closet,” which shows clothing and accessories worn by stars, and even says how much the item cost and where you can find it.

The “Red Carpet Fashion Awards,” commonly referred to RCFA by fashion bloggers, has a shopping section that is coming soon, so those who are interested in a particular piece can purchase it right off the site itself!

In order to receive their e-mail newsletter, or to become more interactive with the site by connecting through Twitter or Facebook, go to www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com.

It was the day of six talented designers showed their bets for the autumn winter collection.

The first two runway shows were from the LAB platform. It started with the menswear designer, Ricardo Andrez, who presented a collection full of lively and vivid colors in a sporty style. Then came Marques’ Almeida and his collection “youth, effortless and coll” inspired by the grunge of the 90s, with oversized silhouettes mixed with fairer ones in shades of gray, black and acid yellow. The makeup was soft, with discreet smoky eye and a slight touch of color on the lips.

Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Ricardo Dourado introduced his first menswear work with a collection called “Rioters.” Following the trend seen in all the days of Lisbon Fashion Week, contrasting materials and oversized pieces were the focus of the collections. The star of next season was also present, the blue appeared in two beautiful shades plus black and gray. The makeup was very discreet, without much detail.

Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Opening the main hall for the most expected runway shows of the day, Pedro Pedro presented a charming collection that stood between the classic, sporty and urban chic, resulting in a fashion “streetwear couture materials” in black pieces, prints, shades of brown, orange, beige and exquisite shades of blue. Despite some oversized items, the collection “Urban Mix” managed to maintain an elegant and elongated silhouette. The hair were pulled up carelessly and the makeup reused the soft smoky eyes and nude lips.

Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Alexandra Moura introduced the concept of “Agri…Doce” (“Bitter…Sweet”) to her collection, which emerged from the need to work the comfort of the most structured and the most romantic details, blending city world with rural to find the perfect balance. The “Bitter” refers to heavier lines, urban, predominantly black, while the “Sweet” refers to the romance, the floral pattern in shades of red, white and a greater smoothness in the pieces. Therefore, the collection is based on opposites, male/female, light/heavy, structured/romantic, large/fair, short/long, rural/urban. Makeup consisted of eyes softly delineated and vibrant red lips. On their heads, all models wore a leather cap.

Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Filípe Faísca was the closing designer of this edition of the legendary Portuguese fashion event, and he did so in style. With a dramatic entrance to the sound of rain, thunder and birds, the collection proposed a structured silhouette and the idea of protection. For this purpose to be accomplished, the designer used many layers of draping, pleats, and oversized coats in contrast with fine fabrics, lace, leather and lots of transparency. The colors played on a palette of shades of gray, beige, black and white to which highlighted this elegant collection. This powerful and feminine women were accentuated by the makeup with a strong eyeliner for a cat eye effect and nude lips, completing the look with big topknots in the hair.

Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

And that was the end, with a lot of class and refinement, another Lisbon Fashion Week with the Portuguese designers projections for the coming autumn/winter collection. But no time to rest, the preparations for the spring/summer 2013 collection have already begun, which will be launched at the next Moda Lisboa in october, 2012.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

On a hot afternoon in Lisbon, the catwalks was boiling and many designers were cheered and received standing ovations in another great night of Moda Lisboa — the Lisbon Fashion Week. The designers on Saturday gave a formidable show of elegance and sophistication. The excellence of the materials, the maturity of the collection the cut and details of the pieces provided refinement worthy of a gala evening.

The hot Lisbon afternoon began with the parade of jewelry designer Valentine Quaresma. Based on microscopic pictorial patterns, the collection was titled “Virus”, investing in silver as a trend.

The second and third show were from the LAB. The first by Os Burgueses, who presented the collection “Home”, proposing a “journey in discovery [of] what binds us to each other” with a lot of synthetic leather, poplin and jersey pieces in predominantly black and gray, but red and dark blue was present to liven the casual look for day and night. The menswear designer Daniel Diniz presented the second show from the LAB platform. With a very basic proposal and sportswear influenced by Tibet, what we saw was a “mixture of baseball players, Tibetan monks, nomads, vagabonds and martial art fighters.” The highlight was bare feet and “dirty” faces that characterized the influences of the collection. However, the strength of the collection was recycling, the fabrics used being leftovers from previous collections.

Os Burgueses - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Maria Gambina presented the “Otherness”, an urban collection with a strong influence on hockey. The silhouettes were in ‘Y’, with oversized jackets and contrasting tights pants. The blue and red emerged as a point of color between black and white pieces. The makeup was simple and pretty, with smoky eyes, lashes and nude lips. Focus was on the fringes on the clothing and the hair of the models, which were wrapped in a black cap with platinum blond hair on top, marked a ridge.

Maria Gambina - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

The guest designer, Peter Drzal, presented a quick game of relaxed compositions in his collection “Go, Now, Here” inspired by American football pictures and a futuristic version of the gentleman look. Smooth lines, fluid and transparent fabrics; Shades of wine, ocher, brown and a vibrant blue gave more life to the pieces. Highlight were prints in arabesque, bicolor pieces, colored collars and cuffs. The men stood out at times by their red shoes, sometimes by hats, while the women paraded with beautiful make-up including smoky eyes in earthy shades and burgundy lips.

Peter Drzal - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

The main runway shows of the day were by Miguel Vieira, Nuno Baltazar and Nuno Gama, undoubtedly the major highlights of this sumptuous evening.

Nuno Gama - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Betting on the classic cut, perfect modeling and the quality of fabrics, Miguel Vieira proposed “Vestir o Fado” (Dress up the Fado) in an elegant collection that “redefines and revitalizes the form of approach to culture and the root of fado.” The designer used leather and fur, as well as pure wool, egyptian cotton, jacquard, velvet silk and duchese satin. The elegance of black was increased with shades of gold, gray, green, brown and beige. For men it was tailored cuts in structured pieces, while for women, slim silhouette and hourglass shapes, enhancing the sensuality of a classic design with contemporary details. Highlight were on the gloves and the wonderful shoes. The makeup was in shades of brown, with heavily lined eyes in black and brown lips. The models had their hair aside, wet and tied with big glasses and beautiful earrings. The geek chic style also fell upon men.

Miguel Vieira - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

With interpretations of Pina Bausch’s universe and the song “The Man I Love” – the theme of this collection – from George and Ira Gershwin Gershin, the designer Nuno Baltazar had created pieces designed at the movement level, with many draping, ruffles and trompe l’oeil effects. Overwrought shoulders, extra-large coats, fluid fabrics and warm colors resulted in a demi-couture, easy-wear, urban, feminine and sophisticated collection, despite cuts of masculine inspirations. Contrasting with black, the designer used the warm tones of orange and red to make the pieces more vibrant, and also earth tones, nude and gold. Marked cheeks and bright red lips were the highlights in makeup.

To finish with a golden ticket, the busiest show of the night was the designer Nuno Gama. “Be God’s” showed a stylish and refined collection for a grown man, sure of himself yet careful, that left a trail of a sensual virility in the air. The cut, the wearability and excellence of the materials were under a code much more clean and relaxed, where the focus was in the details. Blazers in a traditional construction with shirts or mesh in luxurious materials and tight pants comprised an elongated silhouette for these new urban gentlemen. Shades of brown, blue, chocolate, gray, mustard and burgundy gave much more glow to this collection. Highlights were berets and cheeky mustaches.

Nuno Gama - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

For the last day we had Ricardo Andrez (LAB), Marques’ Almeida (LAB), Ricardo Dourado, Pedro Pedro, Alexandra Moura and Felipe Faísca to delight the audience with their wonderful collections.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The second day of Lisbon Fashion Week revealed a host of new trends and the creativity of designers surprised the audience.

The night began with the collection of V!itor, another talent from LAB platform which we mentioned in our previous report. Under the theme “Life and Death”, the designer sought to celebrate life through death, as could be seen in veils that covered the faces of the models like in a funeral cortege. He was inspired by the work of Marina Abramovic, resulting in a somber collection due to the predominance of black in very comfortable pieces. Tight trousers, large blouses and cleavages were present in this collection. The makeup was very simple, with just a slight tone of orange on the eyelids and nude lips.

V!itor - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

The second show of the night squandered originality with an unusual entrance. Everyone thought it was going to be a quick show because the all models entered and left together on the catwalk, the music stopped and the lights went out. However, after initial moments of doubt, the models returned one by one dressed in the charming collection by Katty Xiomara. In addition to basic black and gray, blue, pale pink, nude and purple tones made all the difference in the collection, giving lightness and femininity to the look. The colorful details in the collars, bars, shoulders and wrists gave extra charm to spare. With the exception of glasses painted on the models faces, the makeup was very light, just eyeliner, long lashes, coral lipstick and peach blush.

Katty Xiomara - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

The grand entrance of Dino Alves was only the prelude to his exuberant collection. The goal of the designer was to play with shadows and what they can reveal. The contrast between stamped or colored parts and the simpler and more neutral colors was the key point of collection. Besides the many prints, oversized pieces mixed with tight ones, asymmetry and many slits helped to compose an elongated silhouette, making up austere and fluid pieces in the collection. The highlight was the colors: red, gold, blue gray, gradients and prints. The use of transparent fabric and overlaps remain in this collection, and the oriental inspiration. Pulled eyeliner and strong colors on the lips were the makeup highlights.

Dino Alves - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

To end the shows on Friday, Ricardo Preto presented a beautiful and elegant collection. Betting on the sobriety of the pieces, the designer’s goal was to highlight the colors that stand out in Portugal, resulting in a collection with new cuts and silhouettes inspired by the present and future. The highlight was on cleavages and the use of pleated fabrics that enhance sensuality. Fluid fabrics, colored lining, oversized and asymmetrical jackets with a mens cut also gained prominence in the collection along with the use of vibrant colors such as green, mustard and a beautiful dark pink, besides the white pieces contrasting with the traditional dark colors of the season. A strong makeup with smoky eyes and blush marking the cheeks was the make-up theme while hair centered around a bun made of dreadlocks.

Ricardo Preto - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

For the third day of the event, eight designers will show their collections and inspirations for next fall/winter. Highlights from the guest lists include Peter Drzal, Miguel Vieira, Nuno Baltazar and Nuno Gama.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The fashion world in Lisbon is celebrating: Yesterday began the 38th edition of Lisbon Fashion Week, Moda Lisboa, with their prospects for the next autumn/winter collection. Under the theme ‘Freedom’, the designers have abused their creativity in collections that promise a lot of vivacity and sensuality.

The night began with the premiere of Say My Name, a new talent launched by the LAB platform. Catarina Siqueira sought oriental inspiration in samurais and kimonos to design their pieces. This inspiration generated oversized look, but with a strong structure that resembles the armor of warriors (including armor accessories) as overlapping plates (shoulders and abdomen) and raglan sleeves. The asymmetry in blocks of colors was the key point in this collection. To contrast with the traditional black of the season, the designer chose shades of cooper, orange and a soft tone of lavender. The sum of these factors makes the designs result in a casual and comfortable look prioritizing jersey and the felt 3D technology. The makeup was simple; a well-made skin with almost no blush, emphasis on black eyeliner and a brown shade imitating the trace of the eyeliner in the concave of the eye. The hair also had oriental inspiration.

Say My Name - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

The second fashion show was provided by the White Tent. The designer pair bet on a minimalist collection, with comfort and usability at the center of their pieces. The predominantly black was broken with a beautiful shade of blue, pink, orange and copper tones. Adidas sneakers fit perfectly with the minimal and sportive propose of the dual. Again, the jersey was present in a collection to give life and asymmetries to the overlapping pieces. For hair and makeup the word of order was convenience, following the trend of the clothes with a healthy skin tone with just slightly smoky eyelids in shades of gray and blue and a casual hair bun.

White Tent - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

The collection of the Bosnian designer Lidija Kolovrat showed off pieces that “are themselves a study” to explore more casual ways to use them. The pieces have been restructured following the oversized trend with a strong asymmetry. The goal of the designer was to explore the shapes and create vertical silhouettes to involve the body, in contrast with the draped structured forms and transparency. Besides the classic black and gray, the color palette had shades of purple, blue and graphic prints. The detail in the makeup was on account of a dramatic cat eye, but the highlight of the production was the hat with long hairpieces.

Lidija Kolovrat - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

To end the first night in a big way, Louis Buchinho squandered sensuality and elegance on a collection made to move from the runway to the Portuguese sidewalks. The goal of the designer was “put the sidewalk in high heels”, betting on tight lines to give femininity and sensuality to your creation. The collection was marked by the graphics and the asymmetry that the Portuguese sidewalk provide, which were highlighted by the sobriety of the chosen colors, shades of gray, beige and blue, and the classic black and white. The makeup and hair were simple and followed the autumn/winter trend showed in the fashion weeks of Milan and Paris; loose and slightly curled hair allied with beautiful lips in a fabulous shade of wine to make the models look divine.

Louis Buchinho - Credit: Larissa Barros Fabiao do Nascimento & Tuane Oliveira Formiga

Not just the catwalk, which was an explosion of creativity and style, did justice to the theme of this fashion week: The onlookers were equally dressed in the code of ‘Freedom’. Always eclectic, the style of the public made the smooth transitions between the classic and modern in the blink of an eye, a mix of styles, colors and accessories, making the crowd around you a second fashion show as soon as the main one turn off the lights.

Today the event continues with the collections of V!tor (LAB), Katty Xiomara, Dino Alves and Ricardo Preto. With great expectations we look forward to the second night of the Lisbon Fashion Week 2012.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Suzy Amis Cameron, founder of the Red Carpet Green Dress design contest, announced the winning dress and surprise actress who will wear the sustainable gown to the 84th Academy Awards.

Actress Missi Pyle, recently seen in the Academy Award nominated film “The Artist,” will wear a design by Valentina Delfino when she attends the 84th Academy Awards. Delfino – born in Venezuela and based in Miami – was among hundreds from around the world who submitted a sustainable dress design for the competition, which began last November.

“The Red Carpet Green Dress contest gives aspiring or established designers a chance to make a beautiful and sustainable gown that will be seen on the single most anticipated red carpet,” said Suzy Amis Cameron. “When the talented actress Missi Pyle steps onto the red carpet at the Academy Awards this Sunday, everyone will see why sustainable design can also be stunning design. Valentina Delfino has created an Oscar worthy dress, and I am thrilled Missi has joined us in creating an important fashion moment.”

Environmental advocate and wife of Director James Cameron, Suzy Amis Cameron started the Red Carpet Green Dress contest in 2009, during a non-stop red carpet bonanza she experienced while attending “Avatar” premieres, in which she wore countless dresses and began to understand the environmental footprint fashion can have on our planet. The experience helped her shape the global challenge, now in its third year, in which designers submit red carpet worthy designs made entirely of sustainable materials.

“All the world is watching this red carpet,” said actress Missi Pyle. ”And as artists, I believe it is our job to show the world that we not only care about creating incredible art, but that we are mindful of the fact that, in doing so, we can make something beautiful that is also sustainable. It is an incredible honor for me to walk the most glamorous red carpet in the world in such a stunning and meaningful dress.”

“This is a winning year for all involved in the Red Carpet Green Dress contest,” said Samata Angel, Red Carpet Green Dress Global Campaign Director. ”We not only have a stunning garment from Valentina Delfino, but we have an actress who is part of an Oscar nominated ensemble. Missi Pyle is a talented artist whose commitment to sustainability extends to the red carpet. Her gown will shine both for its strong design, and for the important statement it makes about sustainable fashion.”

Red Carpet Green Dress benefits MUSE School CA and Global MUSE – a non-profit founded by Suzy Amis Cameron and her sister Rebecca Amis to provide resources to their partner schools around the world. Their initiatives include assistance for basic school operations, curriculum development, and nutritious lunches for every student.

Partner Support

Red Carpet Green Dress has received support from notable partners around the world.

Missi will be wearing shoes designed by Christian Louboutin and accessories from Stella McCartney.

The dress itself was made under the guidance of award-winning designer Birgit Muller.

The Ambrose Hotel, Santa Monica’s only award-winning sustainable boutique hotel, will host winning designer Valentina Delfino. The Ambrose’s green values are the perfect compliment for the Red Carpet Green Dress contest.

Zem Joaquin, Founder & CEO of Ecofabulous.com, has supported Red Carpet Green Dress and assisted in the selection of the winning garment.

Cradle to Cradle and the Natural Resources Defense Council have worked in partnership with Red Carpet Green Dress to ensure the final design is sustainably created.

Eco fashion is a growing trend and movement among red carpet regulars, including Livia Firth and Viola Davis.

About the Winning Design

The gown will contain silk peace chiffon, lined with recycled polyester and a sustainable zipper located on the left side seam. The silk chiffon will be dyed with a natural mineral dye, which is both environmentally friendly and OSHA approved.

Peace Silk (or Cruelty–Free Silk) is the non-violent silk created through the process that permits the full life cycle of the silkworm pupae. The silkworm is able to emerge naturally and only then the cocoons are unwound. On the contrary, the traditional sericulture approach kills the worm inside. This is done through the process of heat or steam, in order to keep the pupa from breaking through the cocoon – causing numerous threads rather than having a single fiber.
