The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Journalism has been around for quite awhile, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. However, due to the presence of social media and online communities, this field is constantly changing in form. As a result, a call for ethics in journalism is needed – and here’s what you should know.

Defining Journalism Ethics

Depending upon where you are and the particular entity we’re discussing, the exact definition of journalism ethics might vary a bit. However, the Associated Press Managing Editors‘ piece entitled “Statement of Ethical Principles” notes that responsibility, accuracy, integrity and independence are the ethics on which journalism should stand. That said, it’s important to note that some other entities do expand upon these qualities, depending on their niche and scope.

Providing Accurate Information

Here, we find a problem that often plagues modern journalism. Instead of worrying about providing accurate information to the audience, media outlets want to make sure they’re the first ones to get details on a particular incident. As a result, they wind up providing inaccurate information. Very quickly, many people can and will see this information, take it as fact, and pass it right along. In 2013, journalists need to remember that providing accurate details is a major part of their job, even if no one else seems to care.

What’s Out There

Journalists are also supposed to be responsible for what’s out there, but this is becoming increasingly more difficult in modern times as well. Articles are posted to the Internet almost as soon as the event happens, and the audience can begin to comment on them. Yes, the readers might point out grammatical problems and factual inaccuracies. However, they can also take portions out-of-context and spin them in a way that was never intended by the writer. Journalists might not realize how their words can be manipulated and changed, and they could ultimately wind up starting a whole debate or topic that they never thought possible.

Addressing The Issues

The call for ethics in journalism exists because these issues are so widespread. However, they are difficult to monitor. Journalists, and the leaders of newspapers, magazines, online news sources and other print publications, need to discuss strategies for effectively addressing these issues. Journalism must return to its earlier approach and its goal of providing accurate information because that is the heart of the problem. Instead of racing against one another, they should start to emphasize quality over quantity. Of course, journalists cannot always predict how people are going to take the material they write, but they can still proofread and edit before they submit works into the online world.

Ethics in journalism is comprised of several different categories, and these categories can vary from one outlet to another. However, all journalists and media professionals need to consider the audience and what’s best for them. By starting to revise some of the practices, journalism might be able to return to a more reputable form that people can trust for all issues – large and small.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

From natural disasters to large-scale attacks, plenty of unnerving incidences have occurred in the past several years. While people have always responded to disasters in the quickest way possible, the new media has significantly changed the way that happens. Basically, the new media refers to instant access to new stories and the contribution from users to these stories. How have these forms changed the ways we respond?

As It Unfolds

Previously, people were unable to learn many details of disasters until after the event was over. Now, we’re practically able to watch all of these stories as they unfold. Consider a huge storm that ravages a particular area of the country. As the death tolls are counted and people are found, the audience is finding out along with the rest of the country. Depending on the information reported, the audience can experience a number of highs and lows in terms of emotion, journalistic integrity and facts before the final legacy of a disaster takes hold.

Accuracy

While the new media can help people to stay on top of current events, it also enables them to hear inaccurate information, since media outlets will often report information confirming it. They respond by posting it on their own Facebook pages and texting to all of their friends. By the time the outlet realizes the mistake, thousands of people could already believe falsities. These falsities can then take quite awhile to clear up, leading to countless rumors or worse, lawsuits or loss of life.

Having a Voice

On many new media outlets, the audience is able to respond just as quickly as the information and details are revealed. Before any solution is formulated, political arguments might erupt on media sites, influencing the direction that policy and recovery take. People might start to argue over whether federal government aid is needed to help deal with a situation, and others might even start to allocate blame for the disaster to certain individuals or groups. While this may always seem to open the doorway for negativity, the new media also helps people to respond in a positive manner as well.

Sending Help

In the positive sense, individuals are usually able to send help to those in need right away. When people respond on various media outlets, they might come together to work toward a solution. If a particular area of the country has experienced significant damage from a storm, others may start to donate to them. They may start to set up funds or to host events where the benefits go to these people. Through the use of media, the people in charge of these efforts can get the word out there quickly and inspire plenty of others to join in their noble causes.

New media has changed a lot in this world. Instant access is at the center of the change, because both media outlets and the audience are able to read and respond to a vast array of information in such a short amount of time. These changes have both positive and negative effects on the world as a whole, so it’s up to savvy consumers like you to discern between the good and the bad – and respond accordingly. With great power comes great responsibility.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

This is the second part of the interview with the magazine Positively Smitten. Read the first part here.

The women behind the website tells us about theirs hopes for the future of Positively Smitten, challenges they faced making the website and more.

Toonari Post (TP): Why do you think that it is important for there to be websites like Positively Smitten for women to access?

Positively Smitten (PS): So often, magazines targeted for women tell us all the reasons we’re not good enough while simultaneously telling us what we need to do to make ourselves acceptable. Articles are about how to get a man and then how to keep him – the overall message is that women aren’t good enough as they are, and even once they are, they have to keep working at it. Positively Smitten exists to tell women they’re wonderful as is. You don’t need to lose those last 10 pounds to be beautiful in our eyes, although if you want to, more power to you! Positively Smitten is about acceptance and support. It’s about building a community where women can share their genuine experiences and feel appreciated. (Liz Reddinger, Managing Editor)

TP: What do you think you (and everyone involved in making the website) have personally gained from it?

PS: We’re so incredibly lucky in that right now we’ve got three dedicated staff writers who are part of this – and literally doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. Lyndsey, Amy, and Kendra have been great additions to the magazine and I hope seeing their writing on Positively Smitten, and seeing how overwhelmingly positive the responses have been, makes them feel that their work and thoughts are valued. I know Liz, Steph, and I can’t thank them enough. And our contributors! They’ve all been completely fantastic, so I hope they’ve taken away a sense of accomplishment from their involvement with the magazine.

As for the three of us, I think we’ve each taken different things away from this. It’s certainly helped strengthen our friendships. It’s challenging to work on a project, but it’s even more challenging when it’s a project you and three friends are collaborating on from different states, in your spare time, while you juggle full-time jobs and the rest of that thing called life. But it’s so rewarding. I feel so close to these girls and I know, personally, I would not have been able to do this on my own. For me, this website has also shown our resilience and determination – as a team. Our personalities complement each other’s and when one of us is feeling weighed down by responsibilities, the other two are there to carry that load for a while. It’s so nice. I feel like together, the three of us can conquer anything. (Crystal Maldonado, Co-Founder, Editor)

TP: Have you faced any challenges or difficulties in producing the website? If so, how have you overcome them?

PS: We are still very new in the grand scheme of things – our site just launched March 1. We were extremely flattered and surprised by the amount of support right from the start, including bringing on writers very quickly! Because of our strong following as a fledgling website, we didn’t have much time to devise a marketing strategy to keep these new followers interested. That has certainly been a challenge. Recently, we’ve joined as many different social media accounts as we could to help spread the word. We divide the tasks and conquer to stay on top of it all. (Stephanie Wilcox, Co-Founder, Editor)

TP: What advice would you give other women thinking of using the internet to get their voices across?

PS: Be clear about your intention and mission, and know what makes you unique. Don’t be afraid to be yourself because ultimately this is what will set you apart. Don’t try and replicate something that’s already out there – instead, use your voice in an authentic way. (Liz Reddinger, Managing Editor)

TP: What are your hopes for the future of your website?

PS: I’d be lying if I didn’t admit we all secretly dream of someday having our own offices where we get to work next to one another and we have a full staff and we’ve been interviewed by Oprah. But I think, ultimately, the three of us would be pleased just knowing that Positively Smitten has impacted some of our readers, whether it’s in making them feel like they’re less alone, or providing a useful life tip, or making them stop to think about an issue they hadn’t questioned before.

We really want to make a difference, and we want to change how not only other people view women, but how we view each other and ourselves. Forgot these stereotypes about women – we just want to show we’re all real and everyone’s life experience is different and that’s okay. And if Oprah decides to someday come knocking on our door, offering to buy us up and give us a nice little office, we’d never turn it down. (Crystal Maldonado, Co-Founder, Editor)

‘Positvely Smitten’ is a wonderful reminder of how great a resource the internet is for people, women in particular, to speak up about issues that they find important. Their value for the average women is heart-warming and I think that you should check out their website www.positively-smitten.com to support and find out more about them.

Look out for the next article in the series ‘Women’s Voices in New Media’ where Toonari Post will have another interview with a woman centered website.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Women all over the world can relate to the feeling of their voices not being heard. Although we make up around half of the world population, sometimes it seems we don’t exist. We have struggled for equality for years, and yet in many countries we are still being paid less, not achieving the best job positions, and constantly criticized by the media, men and even our own gender. But the fight to have our voices heard is far from over: new media has enabled women with the same opportunity to be heard and make a difference.

‘Positively Smitten’ is one such website. Toonari Post was fortunate enough to get an interview with Crystal Maldonado, Stephanie Wilcox, Co-Founders and Editors, and Liz Reddinger, Managing Editor.

Toonari Post (TP): What influenced you to make Positively Smitten?

Positively Smitten (PS): We really wanted to create an online magazine that supported women. There are so many blogs and magazines out there that target women, but we felt many of them gave conflicting messages about self-acceptance. At the end of day, the magazines didn’t make me (or any of us) feel represented. The result was unproductive; I walked away feeling like I had all of these things I wanted and needed to change about myself. As much as I loved these magazines, I didn’t feel they were meant for me, and it became a dream of all of ours, independently, to create our own magazine at some point.

Steph, Liz, and I all grew up writing; Steph and I actually pursued journalism (and women’s studies!) in college. We felt our experience was, at the very least, a strong foundation to tackle a magazine of our own. We have been consumers of magazines aimed at our gender since we were young girls, yet we felt there was a void in mainstream media that we could fill. (Crystal Maldonado, Co-Founder, Editor)

TP: What type of people do you have working on the website?

PS: As far as leadership goes, the three of us, as editors, are exactly the type of individuals we want to target with our articles. We all strive to be “positively smitten” with all aspects of our lives; that is, feeling engaged, proud, excited, amused, in control, and working toward the best version of ourselves possible. We want to acknowledge that all of us are a work in progress and have our flaws. If we want to encourage other women to be proud of who they are, even as flawed human beings, we need to lead by example. On our Founders page, we come right out and introduce ourselves immediately with our flaws and vulnerabilities.

Our current group of contributors are all very different, and that’s our strength. There are a mix of people in various life stages, with different careers, backgrounds, and lifestyles. We are even lucky to have Bill, our one male working on our graphics and branding, and he fully supports our mission .Working on this site, and writing for it, is fun, because there’s no holding back. We can be who we are. (Stephanie Wilcox, Co-Founder, Editor)

TP: What type of content do you include on your website?

PS: Our online magazine covers the following sections: Advice, Beauty, Career, DIY, Entertainment, Inspiration, Life, Relationships and Wellness. All articles are uplifting, positive and hopefully thought-provoking. Articles range from lighter, more fun topics like Springtime beauty staples, to media critiques analyzing diversity on television, to deeper topics like how to deal with the loss of a loved one. We aim to entertain, inspire, and make all women feel represented and welcomed. (Liz Reddinger, Managing Editor)

TP: Who are the people that your website is targeted towards?

PS: Right now, our entire staff is made up of women in their mid-twenties and early thirties, so I think a lot of the stories and experiences we’re sharing resonate with that age group. However, some subjects really do transcend age, especially when it comes to things like body acceptance and coping with the loss of a loved one or really learning to appreciate your family – all things we’ve covered. As much as we’re writing for ourselves, we’re also writing for the younger versions of ourselves, sharing things we wish we’d known or advice we wish we’d been given. And we’re writing for our future selves, or at least, women who are older than us now, but who can see themselves in us.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Many people hardly realize how much they are exposed to the media or how it impacts their everyday lives until it is actually identified.

Today’s society is a world in which citizens have become dependent on being fed information to keep them moving in the right direction. Everything from work, education, relationships, traveling, entertainment and health concerns are influenced by what the media dictates through the use of advertisements, magazines, newspapers and the television.

“After seeing thousands of persuasive advertising messages, we make buying decisions based on what we saw in newspaper and magazine ads, saw and heard in television and radio ads, and saw and heard in ads on websites. Those ads tell us we can trust a product or service and that many people we know are buying the product or service and liking it,” says Dr. Anthony R Curtis, professor of the Mass Media Department at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, in a recent study.

One of the first things many people do when they wake up in the morning is turn on the computer and go online to check the weather. Doing this determines what clothes will be appropriate for the work day and the style of dress chosen is usually influenced, by others or from latest fashion trends seen on the TV or in magazines.

When getting ready to start the day, take notice of the items you use: toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, make-up etc. They are most likely popular brands that were either advertised in a commercial or from a magazine.

According to The Media Comparisons Study, from TVB with Knowledge Networks, consumers credit TV ads as most influential in making a purchase decision. It is also a key source of information that consumers are most likely to learn about products and brands they would like to try or buy. The internet was next followed by newspapers and magazines.

According to Bill Harvey, a long-time media thought leader and vice-chairman of TRA, a New York sales data provider, “Ad quality is, itself, a behaviorist measure, since it’s based on data from set-top boxes and frequent-shopper cards that tells them that higher-quality ads are relatively more likely to be watched than skipped over.” Moreover, he has found that quality ads cause positive changes in brand purchase and greater return of investment. Since these quality ads are watched and bring a greater ROI that further proves that the media does influence people’s decisions.

From a marketing perspective, an individual’s decisions are based on what is inherent from their own cultures, from outside social references or their personal experiences. In work and school people know what has to be done based on their learned experiences and studies, but in daily life they rely on media to get the current news, facts and trends concerning what is important and what they should be aware of.

If people did not watch TV or glance through magazines how would they know what to buy to support needs and wants? Society needs the media to make so many decisions in life thus making it hard to determine how they can live without it now that it so widespread.

The current generation of young people has grown up in this environment with technology present in almost every aspect and their lives are consumed by it.

“Today’s huge merged companies have the power to shape our opinions and beliefs and influence our decisions. This is why it’s important to be aware of what we are exposed to every day, so we can look at things from different perspectives and not just from the perspective of a medium,” Curtis said.

Although people appreciate the media for all the positive things that come from it, the influential implications result in a society of individuals unable to make independent decisions.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dallas, U.S.A. — Scriptures From the Bible.org is a free Biblical commentary website that publishes anonymously written content to help explain and interpret the meaning of Bible verses and scripture in the context of today’s world. It is a bit theological, a little reflective, notably fresh and original – and relies heavily on the words of a secret community (explained below.)

While the website clearly covers themed Bible topics such as “Famous Bible Verses”, “Christmas Verses”, and “Bible Verses on Friendship” – like any other Bible commentary site; it hints at something that is more emotionally powerful for the reader.

The content is structured in a clean format that focuses on abstract and meaningful article images that connect not only to the verse but the commentary of the anonymous author… anonymous author? This is a curious angle.

Alex Brookbank, the website’s founder, said, “We strive to create quality and impactful content that expresses messages of hope and wisdom that is written by unnamed individuals. We believe that this speaks to the strength of a united community and demonstrates the power of the average human being. And we believe that this is appealing and genuine.”

In the future, the founder believes the website could evolve into a Social Media destination where users comment, share, and submit their own theological (or philosophical) commentary and reflective articles themed around Bible interpretation and ordinary understanding.

The Bible’s most timeless verses are explained in an easy-to-navigate blog-type format that publishes new articles daily. The site is heavily integrated with Facebook and reached 1,000 Facebook followers within the first week of launching.

In the short-term it will continue to attract and help those of us that need a little reflection, a little wisdom, and a little guidance to get us through the rest of the day.

Don’t miss any more cutting-edge Bible commentary - it could be just what you need!

As part of the New York Sports Clubs’ “Work Out to Help Out” Thanksgiving fundraiser, 100 percent of the sales from special three-day guest passes and new member fees were donated directly to New York Cares’ Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

“As a company with deep roots in the tri-state region, we’ve come to understand the immense level of support that those affected by Hurricane Sandy need,” said Bob Giardina, CEO of New York Sports Clubs and Town Sports International. “Deploying thousands of local volunteers into the hardest hit neighborhoods, New York Cares has been on the frontline of disaster relief and we are proud to contribute to their ongoing commitment to restore normalcy to our community.”

In addition, New Sports Clubs has donated memberships to Americorp and Team Rubicon volunteers who are assisting in the rebuilding efforts in the Rockaways and other neighborhoods devastated by the storm.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dublin, U.S.A. — Tis the season for cherishing special moments with family. But what about those who don’t have one? To honor children in foster care, Wendy’s is asking American families to tune into CBS Television Network’s 14th Annual “A Home for the Holidays,” a program honoring the joys of adoption told through inspirational stories from families involved in this rewarding process and performances by Rachel Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Rascal Flatts and other entertainers. The special, sponsored by Wendy’s, airs Wednesday, December 19, at 8:00 p.m. EST on CBS.

With more than 400,000 children in foster care in the United States, and over 100,000 of them available for adoption, Wendy’s is also encouraging consumers to “tweet it” to “treat it” back to this important cause. For every tweet using #TreatItFwd until December 21, Wendy’s will donate 50¢ to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA), the non-profit organization established in 1992 by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, who was adopted. Wendy’s will donate up to $25,000 to the Foundation in support of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, the signature program of DTFA that focuses on moving America’s longest-waiting children in foster care into adoptive families.

“Our involvement in ‘A Home for the Holidays’ and our social media fundraising are just a few ways we give back to the communities and families we serve every year,” said Emil Brolick, President and CEO of Wendy’s International. “We are grateful for the support of our customers who have helped us raise more than $10 million this year to find permanent loving homes for children in foster care.”

Wendy’s provides a range of ways for its customers to get involved throughout the year, such as:

Offering donation canisters at its restaurants’ front counters

Donating 50¢ to DTFA for each Frosty purchased over Father’s Day Weekend

Selling $1 Halloween Frosty coupon books for free Jr. Frosty desserts

To date, Wendy’s has helped more than 3,000 children in foster care find forever families, and several thousand more have been matched with families and are awaiting adoption. Data from a five-year study of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids shows that children referred to the program are up to three times more likely to get adopted.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. — WhyHunger’s annual Hungerthon campaign raised a record$825,000 for the fight against hunger and poverty through their radiothon and online auction with partners SiriusXM and CBS Radio Group.

“It’s been a tough year, our economy is still struggling and many of our neighbors and community-based partners were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy,” said WhyHunger Co-Founder and Executive Director Bill Ayres. “But we never underestimate the power of our supporters, partners and the radio community to defend the rights of all people to have access to good food – both in times of crisis and 365 days a year.”

Funds raised by this year’s Hungerthon support WhyHunger’s work with grassroots organizations across the country, including many of their long time partners in the Tri-State area that have been on the front lines, providing food, water and critical services to their neighbors in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and working on long-term recovery.

With over 150 auctions on charitybuzz.com, this year’s top earners included:

How do you know if you are in such a relationship? The top three signs include “spending more time fighting than enjoying each other,” “regularly feeling like you can’t do anything right” and “feeling depressed and/or anxious.”

71% of experts identify poor role models as the leading cause of toxic relationship habits, followed closely by low self-esteem with “fear of being truly open with someone else” clocking in third.

64% of experts agree the #1 way to overcome toxic relationship habits is replacing them with more positive behaviors and habits, followed by couples or individual therapy.

The good news: YourTango is here to help.
Additional survey findings:

66% of experts agree that “communication issues” is the most common toxic relationship habit, followed by”consistently blaming others for your problems” (50%) and “shutting down emotionally” (48%).

Top three ways to move on from a toxic relationship? 1) Allow yourself a proper grieving period 2) focus on self-improvement and 3) cut ties with the ex.

The #1 bad relationship habit most likely to keep someone single is “constantly looking for the next best relationship” followed by anger about a past relationship.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Alexandria, U.S.A. — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), announced it has received $130,000 as part of the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety and Security Institute on December 11. The Motorola Solutions Foundation is the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions. Through the grant, NCMEC’s Jimmy Ryce Law Enforcement Training Center (JRLETC) will be able to offer training and support to law enforcement that will enhance the investigative response to cases of missing or sexually exploited children.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety Grants aim to support safety education and training programs for first responders, their families and the general public in the United States and Canada.

“The courses we offer give law enforcement access to strategies and tools that can help make their jobs easier and their communities safer,” said John Ryan, NCMEC CEO. “We are grateful to the Motorola Solutions Foundation for helping us continue to provide this important service.”

The training is offered through NCMEC’s Jimmy Ryce Law Enforcement Training Center, which was named in memory of 9-year-old Jimmy Ryce, who was abducted and murdered near his Florida home in 1995. Courses are offered regionally, across the country, and at NCMEC headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. NCMEC trainings annually bring together more than 400 law enforcement agencies from across the United States.

“Motorola Solutions is dedicated to helping people be their best in the moments that matter,” said Matt Blakely, director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “Motorola Solutions Foundation aligns itself with this mission by supporting programs like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that train people how to respond to potential safety problems or recover from the loss of a first responder. We are proud to see these valuable programs make a positive impact in the communities where we live and work.”

Through the Public Safety and Security Institute, the Motorola Solutions Foundation serves as an investor, convener and supporter of issues that affect the public safety of communities worldwide, providing leadership in the sector to drive innovation and grow and engage the network of those interested in these issues.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation provides grants around the world with an emphasis on programming in communities where Motorola Solutions has a significant presence. For 84 years, Motorola has worked side-by-side with law enforcement to develop the solutions that support its mission. Since 2007, the foundation has provided over $25M in grants to public safety organizations in the U.S and Canada.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Houston, U.S.A. — The Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF) announced on December 11, the launch of Phase II of the Giving Library – the addition of 600 nonprofit organizations to the innovative online video library designed to help philanthropists more efficiently survey the landscape of giving opportunities and connect with nonprofits through engaging video interviews. The Giving Library, which launched in August 2012, currently has 250 participating nonprofit organizations.

“The Giving Library is being used by foundation grant makers and individual donors who seek a more efficient, interactive and engaging method of charitable giving,” said Kerry Vaughan, Technology & Innovation Manager at LJAF. “Given the positive response from donors and nonprofits alike, we are excited to extend this opportunity to even more organizations that are doing important work around the country.”

Each organization is featured on a unique profile that includes two types of videos: a short overview video that provides a broad understanding of an organization’s work and a Q&A video interview designed to model an in-depth, face-to-face meeting between a donor and a nonprofit. These videos allow donors to learn about a nonprofit organization’s origins, objectives, metrics of success, accomplishments and plans for the future. This information, in turn, allows philanthropists to make strategic and efficient donor decisions.

“American Rivers is delighted to participate in the Giving Library,” said Robbin Marks, Senior Director of Development for American Rivers. “Written materials alone are often not enough to capture the scope and vision of an organization. This innovative online approach makes organizations come alive, providing the opportunity for nonprofit leaders to share their challenges, stories and hopes for the future.”

The cost of participating in the Giving Library is 100% covered by LJAF. This includes transportation to a production studio in Houston, Texas; lodging expenses for an overnight stay if necessary; and video production, editing, and hosting on the Giving Library website.

The Giving Library also announced a new partnership with GuideStar, one of the most respected sources of nonprofit information. “GuideStar is passionate about increasing the amount of quality nonprofit information to donors and funders. We believe that the nonprofit sphere will be the most effective when this information is widely available and high-quality,” said Jacob Harold, President & CEO of GuideStar USA. “We are excited to partner with the Giving Library, an innovative tool that will add value by providing engaging and in-depth information to donors.”

The Giving Library invites all types of nonprofit organizations to apply. To be considered for one of the 600 new spots, please complete the application located here. All applications must be received by February 11, 2013.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The methodology for the formation of government and the organizing of mankind is generally known as politics, in a sense that it should be fair, honest and transparent enough to be relied on by the general public.

Politics, or political systems for that matter, has become an integral part of everyday life; people in democratic countries view it as an opportunity of selecting people to govern the state for a specified term based on their preferences. Human life viewed from the corridors of broad logic and the prism of intellect reveals to us something extraordinarily vital about how it moves on and what affects it the most.

Principle perspectives defining human existence tell us that there are three elements that can be regarded as there epitome for survival: namely religious, social and economic, all bonded directly or indirectly through politics, impacting human life.

The extent of the government’s power is naturally limited to economic and social matters among others, because democratic countries rely on pillars of secularism to erect the structure of a neutral state. Politics acts as primary parameter for people to make judgments on how society should be formed, expressed through voting and secondly because the preferences of people helps the government to satisfy the desire of individuals by bringing in new laws and principles in accordance to people’s preferences.

But contrary to its reputation, politics acts as a servant of society by revolving around the corner of human life. In simple terms, it is a system that depends on how people feel, being expressed through voting. This is because indirectly the whole of the political system is responsible for leading the society towards certain goals. For example, in the case of less-developed nations, the ultimate focus of the system will be on how to enhance the system of social justice, economic opportunities and social dignity for individuals.

In democratic countries, society acts as a center of the universe and politics just orbits around it; survival of an entire polity in a great degree is reciprocal of survival and the enrichment of society. In case of a multiparty democracy, the primary goal of all parties will always be achieving targets envisioned for making a country prosperous, but routes they follow may differ.

But in case of theocratic governance systems, the whole establishment of governance is based on scripture or philosophy, so there arises a question of political in-fighting for supremacy.

Politics minus dirty vote-maximizing and winning tricks can lead to a path of peace and consistent prosperity, but the onus of cleaning the dirt is with the public.

Thankfully, its development of political philosophy over the years served us with the different forms of governments and establishments of societies, ultimately leading towards an augmented governing system.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Oakland, U.S.A. — Ask.com, an online brand for questions and answers, announced on November 15, the results of its job benefits study, conducted online by Harris Interactive among U.S. adults during the month of October. The 2012 State of the Workplace: Benefits and Perksstudy reveals that 95 percent of Americans weigh job benefits and perks before deciding to either stay put or take a new position. Benefits such as health insurance, 401K matching, paid time off and life insurance are so critical, more than half of U.S. workers (60 percent) would rather spend a night in jail than go without.

“Our goal here was to get a national view of what potential recruits value most, while pinpointing how job seekers in the West might differ,” said Lisa Ross, vice president of human resources at Ask.com. “While it’s clear that perks like free massages resonate with Westerners in particular, they pale in comparison to the value all Americans put on benefits like paid life insurance and tuition assistance.”

Healthcare: Worth Sleeping in the Slammer?
Benefits and perks are so coveted, Americans say they’re worth a night behind bars. Men (64 percent) are more likely to indicate this than women (56 percent).

U.S. adults (77 percent) list health insurance as the benefit that most factors into their employment decision.

Surprisingly, those without children (80 percent) are more likely to choose health insurance than those with children in the household (70 percent).

Other benefits that topped the list for Americans include:

Retirement/401K matching (69 percent)

Paid time off (66 percent)

Life insurance (54 percent)

Ease of commute/proximity to transportation (49 percent)

Stock options (39 percent)

Tuition assistance (35 percent)

More Me Time, Please!
Americans are also protective of personal time, actively seeking employers invested in their health and well-being.

More than a third said unlimited paid time off (PTO), telecommuter flexibility, and access to a free on-site gym/fitness center would encourage them to take or keep a job (34 percent each).

American workers despise time wasted in gridlock. Half of respondents base their decision on a job on how close it is to public transportation, or the ease of the commute (49 percent).

Unlimited Vacation…For Real?
Unlimited PTO is gaining traction with companies such as Netflix, Zynga and Ask.com embracing the concept. But how do Americans feel?

Sixty-nine percent said they would be swayed to take a new job if the company offered unlimited PTO.

Unlimited PTO matters more to single people (42 percent) than those who are married (30 percent) or divorced (27 percent).

Is it really unlimited? Nearly half of U.S. adults (48 percent) worry about how much personal time they can actually take from their job.

Surprise…What Else They Want

Western adults (21 percent) are more likely to be encouraged to take or keep a job with an on-site masseuse than those in the Northeast and South (14 percent and 12 percent, respectively).

A job that comes with a clothing allowance is a big draw for many (26 percent), more so than a childcare subsidy or onsite childcare (22 percent).

Younger adults (18-34 -year-olds) are more likely to want a nap room (24 percent), free dry cleaning (19 percent), and a personal shopper (16 percent) than adults 35 and older.

Offering weekend trips planned for employees and their families on anniversaries and birthdays can also sway job seekers (18 percent).

“Silicon Valley companies are known for offering unusual perks like onsite haircuts and laundry service, which are nice-to-haves,” said Ross. “But at the end of the day, what American workers value most are employers committed to their health and well-being and those who are actively invested in their overall quality of life.”

Ask.com also released an infographic here detailing the benefits of adopting an unlimited PTO policy, a benefit the company offers.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Atlanta, U.S.A. — Cox Enterprises held its first Team Cox Volunteer Day on October 13, 2012. Nearly 200 Cox volunteers came together to revitalize the Reverend James Orange Oakland City Park.

The company’s annual giving campaign expanded this year to include two employee volunteer events, Team Cox Volunteer Day and a river cleanup later this month. The giving campaign benefits the United Way of Greater Atlanta, EarthShare of Georgia and the Cox Employee Relief Fund. Each year, one of Cox’s Atlanta executives leads the campaign. Alex Taylor, senior vice president of field operations for Cox Communications, is the 2012 executive champion.

“Establishing an annual Volunteer Day is representative of our company’s belief in doing the right thing for our employees, our customers and our communities,” said Taylor. “Being able to enrich the lives of those around us is something in which we take great pride. Plus, it’s just plain fun.”

Volunteers spent the day cleaning, painting, and landscaping three areas of Oakland City: the Outdoor Activity Center, park and recreation center.

Throughout 2012, Cox Enterprises has had a hand in this community with additional volunteer projects. The company partnered with Park Pride and EarthShare of Georgia to clean up the Reverend James Orange Oakland City Park in April. The park is also located just one mile away from two Habitat for Humanity homes that were built by approximately 400 Cox volunteers earlier this year.

Cox companies in the Atlanta area include: Cox Communications, Manheim, Cox Media Group, AutoTrader.com, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mundo Hispánico, Padres & Hijos, WSB-TV Channel 2, 95.5FM & AM750 News/Talk WSB, Kiss 104.1, B98.5 FM, 95.5 The Beat, 97.1 The River and Kudzu.com.

About Cox Enterprises

Cox Enterprises is a communications, media and automotive services company. With revenues of nearly $15 billion and more than 50,000 employees, the company’s major operating subsidiaries include Cox Communications (cable television distribution, telephone, high-speed Internet access, commercial telecommunications and advertising solutions); Manheim (vehicle auctions, repair and certification services and web-based technology products); Cox Media Group (television and radio stations, digital media, newspapers, advertising sales rep firms, Valpak and Cox Digital Solutions); and AutoTrader.com (online automotive advertising and Kelley Blue Book, vAuto and HomeNet Automotive subsidiaries). Additionally, Cox operates Kudzu.com.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Washington, U.S.A. – The National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA), in conjunction with the Women’s CannaBusiness Network, a project it launched earlier this year, today called on President Obama to cease enforcement actions against state-legal medical cannabis providers while the administration reviews its policies to determine whether they are in the public interest. Respected industry businesswomen defended their work and powerfully expressed their frustration with the administration’s crackdown.

“The women here today are compassionate and courageous leaders,” said Jill Lamoureaux, owner of Colorado Dispensary Services. ”They are pioneers in alternative medicine. They are job creators and tax revenue generators. They are hear to bring awareness to the Obama administration’s reversal on medical marijuana policy and to ask that the Justice Department immediately stop shutting down state-legal businesses that are serving patients, creating jobs and generating tax revenues.”

Jen Reynolds, a mother of four who will lose her job on Monday because of the actions of the U.S. attorney in Colorado, urged the President to think about the people whom are being affected.

“This is not about ‘marijuana dealers,’” Reynolds said. “This is about medical cannabis patients having a safe and regulated environment in which to purchase their medicine. It is about employees like me, who had the amazing opportunity to help patients alleviate their suffering, while earning a living wage. My center should have been a model for others to follow, not a target for federal action.”

NCIA also released a report entitled, “The Colorado Cannabis Industry: A Tale of Ten Cities,” which details the sales and tax revenues generated by medical marijuana centers in ten Colorado cities.

“The ten cities included in the report alone generated close to $10 million in state and local sales taxes in 2011,” explained Aaron Smith, NCIA executive director. “This money is being used to improve government services in these areas, which is one more benefit of a regulated medical cannabis industry.”

The report is available here: http://thecannabisindustry.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/CO_TaleofTenCities.pdf

The mission of the National Cannabis Industry Association is to defend, promote and advance the interests of the cannabis industry and its members. For more information, please visit www.TheCannabisIndustry.org.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Pennsylvania, U.S.A. – Governor Tom Corbett joined officials on September 11 at the U.S. Army War College in Cumberland County to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, as well as all those who have sacrificed their lives in war in the past 11 years.

“We have shown the world that there is no compromise in our determination to remain a nation of free people, safe in our homes, and entitled to the liberties inscribed by our founders,” Corbett said.

“Today, our men and women in uniform continue that tradition. We are here today to honor their sacrifice,” Corbett said. “Each of them, those who came home to us, those we lost, stood guard over the American Dream.”

The ceremony, led by U.S. Army War College Commandant Maj. General Anthony A. Cucolo III, honors military men and women, as well as police officers, firefighters, and civilians who were killed in the terrorist attacks, as well as all those who have since died in protection of our nation.

Among the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11, 2001, were three alumni of the U.S. Army War College. Three more alumni were killed in combat operations.

The war college is the Army’s most senior military educational institution, training officers in leadership, strategy and international operations.

“The best monument we can build to the brave men and women who stood sentinel is to protect the values and liberties for which they gave their last full measure,” Corbett said.

U.S. and state flags were flying at half-staff in observance of Patriot Day.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Toronto, Canada — There are many definitions of retirement based on the premise that it marks the end of your full-time career. One dictionary even defines retirement as “a withdrawal from one’s position or occupation or from active working life. “However, for many Canadians today, retiring is about much more than just leaving the workforce. People are living longer, working later into their lives, and are spending a larger portion of their lives in retirement than previous generations. If the reality of retirement is changing for many people, isn’t it time the definition of retirement changed with it?

“Slowing down and enjoying your golden years means different things to different people,” says Cynthia Caskey, Vice President, Portfolio Manager and Sales Manager, TD Waterhouse Private Investment Advice. “You can choose to continue working part-time, consult, volunteer, go back to school, open your own business – the sky is the limit. So with all these choices, we can see that retirement is changing. Shouldn’t the definition change too?”

With this in mind, TD is asking Canadians to submit their own definition of retirement. Just visit www.redefineretirement.ca from Sept. 10 until Sept. 26, 2012, and provide your contact information and your own new definition of retirement in one sentence. For submitting your definition, you’ll be entered into a draw to win $1,000, which could be used to help top up your retirement savings. The contest winner will be announced in a press release that will be issued the week of Oct. 22, 2012, and on TD’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

“In general, we’re remaining healthier and more active longer in life, which means that many are spending more years in retirement. We’re inviting Canadians to really think about what their ‘ideal retirement’ will be like, and consider how they want to spend their time, who they want to spend it with, and whether or not they will stop working completely,” says Caskey.

“It’s important for Canadians of all ages, not just those approaching retirement, to think about the lifestyle and activities they’ll want to be involved in – and then consider the finances that will be needed to support this,” adds Caskey. “The earlier you start thinking about your retirement dream, the sooner you can start saving to make sure it comes true.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. – The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s major annual fundraiser, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run, will be replicated in communities throughout the nation and to different international locations on its 11th anniversary this September.

The Foundation has expanded its reach into communities throughout the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska as well as an inaugural run in London. So far, close to 70 communities have signed up to hold Tunnel to Towers runs and 25 motorcycle rides, 34.3 miles in length, are also scheduled with the “Bikers for America’s Bravest” program.

Since 2002, the New York City Tunnel to Towers Run has been held annually to honor the 343 firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on 9/11 and recreates the final footsteps of firefighter Stephen Siller who was last seen running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel with 60 pounds of gear strapped to his back en route to the World Trade Center after the attacks. Last year, more than 30,000 people attended and took part in the NY event, while an additional 12,000 participated in runs throughout the world, a tradition that started in 2011.

“The New York City event began as a way to honor Stephen and his firefighter brothers,” said Frank Siller, one of Stephen’s siblings and the chairman of the Foundation. “Over the years, through an influx of volunteers, donations and interest, it has continued to grow and evolve nationwide and worldwide. We are grateful now to have the opportunity to include the entire United States, and even countries around the world, in this moving and meaningful event.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Tampa, U.S.A. — This election season, there is one thing that isn’t partisan. Recent research indicates that intimacy enhancement products, like Masque Sexual Flavors have been selling particularly well in socially conservative states like Montana and North Dakota, in addition to states that might more typically be considered natural markets.

“Recent research from Adam & Eve indicates that Americans spend more than $15 billion annually on sex toys and that the states with the most sex toy purchases per person are those generally considered socially conservative,” says Michael Guilfoyle, President of Masque. “While this may be true for some intimacy enhancement companies, Masque’s sales are highest in states like Texas, New York, California and Massachusetts, proving that intimacy enhancement products appeal to a wide range of individuals in various geographic locations.”

The states that top the charts in terms of sex toy sales are Wyoming, Alaska and North Dakota. The research also found that married women are purchasing sex toys and intimacy enhancement products at twice the rate of single women.

“There is an assumption that single women or individuals in more socially liberal states would be more likely to purchase intimacy enhancement products,” explains Guilfoyle. “It’s clear that women, regardless of their socio-economic status, political beliefs or relationship status are buying products that bring them closer to their partners and help them explore their sexuality. This reinforces our belief that committed couples are looking for ways to increase the intimacy of their relationships.”

As seen in the pages of Redbook, Women’s Health and Cosmo, Masque Sexual Flavors is the first oral sex strip that dissolves on the tongue, blocking the salts, proteins and bitter tastes sometimes associated with oral sex on a man and helping improve the overall experience for both partners. Designed with couples in mind, Masque aims to increase intimacy between partners and encourage sexual exploration.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. – Am I making the right decisions in my life? … I wish I could have known you better; I wish you could know me now, dad … Why did you go to work that day? … Who will be my mother now? … When I see you in me, I feel proud, so proud … You are not forgotten … Most important, I am happy … You can’t kill love.

From heartbreaking to inspirational, teens who lost a loved one to an act of terrorism or in global conflict deliver these very personal messages to the ones they lost in a compelling new video called “My Love is Alive.” Released by Tuesday’s Children and produced by Alexander Libby, who worked closely with director Stephen Daldry on the critically acclaimed film ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’, the two-minute video is bringing attention to the impact of terrorism and world conflict on teenagers all around the world.

Featured in the video are 10 teenage participants from Project Common Bond, an international conflict resolution and peace-building project organized by Tuesday’s Children, the premiere nonprofit organization serving the needs of 9/11 family members, 9/11 responders and others affected by terrorism worldwide.

The video features: Victoria (U.S.) who lost her grandmother on 9/11; Juliette (U.S.) who lost her father on 9/11; Jessica (U.S.) who lost her father on 9/11; Yousseff (Morocco) whose father was murdered in the Casablanca suicide bombings in 2003; Mercy (Nigeria) who lost her mother and two sisters in the Dogon Nahawa Massacre in 2010; Astrid and Mijal (Argentina) who lost their fathers in the AMIA bombing in 1994; Dubhaltach (Ireland) who lost his Uncle in the sectarian violence that has plagued Ireland and Northern Ireland; Aiden (Northern Ireland) who lost his Aunt in the Omagh Bombing in 1998; and Or (Israel) who lost his brother in a bombing.

My Love is Alive opens with each teen facing the screen, asking their loved one simple questions. One by one, the questions become more poignant as the teens share their sense of loss, while also showing that they are moving forward positively with their lives.

“When I was working on ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’, I began reading The Legacy Letters, a compilation of letters from 9/11 family members published by Tuesday’s Children,” said Alexander Libby. “One particular letter stood out. In it, an 18 year old girl wanted to ask her dad questions she’d never have the chance to. While it broke my heart, it inspired me to make this video with the teens from Project Common Bond. We hope My Love is Alive will inspire others and let them know they are not alone.”

Terry Sears, Executive Director of Tuesday’s Children, said, “Project Common Bond shows our teens that their past can change the future in a very positive way. We hope that with this video we can reach even more young people around the world who share similar experiences and encourage them to become tomorrow’s peacemakers and world leaders. We are deeply grateful to Alex for his compassion and vision.”

Tuesday’s Children created Project Common Bond in 2008 in response to a request from 9/11 teens who wanted an opportunity to “give back” through a larger, global initiative. Since the program began more than 300 teens from 16 nations including the United States, Argentina, England, Ireland, Israel, Liberia, Northern Ireland, Palestine, Russia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Algeria, France, Morocco, Nigeria and Pakistan have participated.

The Project Common Bond Curriculum is adapted from the Dignity Model for Conflict Resolution, developed by Dr. Donna Hicks of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. The Harvard University Law School Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program has also contributed to the program’s success.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Washington, U.S.A. — The following is a statement from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden regarding the death of former test pilot and NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong, who died on August 25 at age 82.

“On behalf of the entire NASA family, I would like to express my deepest condolences to Carol and the rest of Armstrong family on the passing of Neil Armstrong. As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind’s first small step on a world beyond our own.

“Besides being one of America’s greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all. When President Kennedy challenged the nation to send a human to the moon, Neil Armstrong accepted without reservation.

“As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero.”

The following is a statement from Johnson Space Center director and former astronaut Mike Coats:

“The passing of Neil Armstrong has shocked all of us at the Johnson Space Center. The whole world knew Neil as the first man to step foot on the Moon, but to us he was a co-worker, a friend, and an outstanding spokesman for the Human Space Program. His quiet confidence and ability to perform under pressure set an example for all subsequent astronauts. Our role model will be missed.”

The following is a statement from Bob Behnken, chief, NASA Astronaut Office:

“Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office. His historic step onto the Moon’s surface was the foundation for many of our personal dreams to become astronauts. The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. We will miss him as a friend, mentor, explorer and ambassador for the American spirit of ingenuity.”

Additional information about Armstrong is available on the Web at:

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. — The U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s flagship Trick-or-Treat campaign, which has raised more than $167 million for children in need around the world, is getting a new look this year. For the first time in the campaign’s 62-year history kids will have a chance to design their own collection boxes. Original designs for the “Create-a-Character” contest may be submitted online at trickortreatforunicef.org. Winning designs in three categories will become part of a limited edition collection for next year’s campaign.

The box design contest will run from September 1 through October 26.

“Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF helps kids, parents and educators celebrate Halloween by raising money and learning about children in other parts of the world,” said Caryl Stern, President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. “This year, we want to tap into children’s imaginations by letting them bring their own creativity to the traditional Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes.”

Original box designs may be submitted online at trickortreatforunicef.org beginning in September. A winning design from each category (children ages 4-8, 9-12, and 13 years and older) will be chosen and announced on Halloween, October 31.

Participants who prefer a finished box have new choices this year, too. The traditional Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box has been given a new look, with six spooky new character boxes – a monster, black cat, princess, pumpkin, vampire and a witch. Fundraising kits containing the character boxes, the blank collection box for design and new educational resources may be ordered online with free shipping at trickortreatforunicef.org.

Begining in 1953, volunteers wore armbands featuring a silhouette of a child drinking milk and carried small orange boxes. The collection boxes have become an iconic symbol of the organization as millions of children have gone door-to-door each Halloween to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

The U.S. Fund for UNICEF is grateful for the support of our National Sponsors Key Club International and Starcom MediaVest Group; along with Promotional Supporters American Airlines and Coinstar, Inc.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Los Angeles, U.S.A. — As Derek O’Neill (www.derekoneill.com) reaches the world through his inspiring dedication in caring for humanity, the esteemed transformational therapist and philanthropist was recently named Celebrity Ambassador for Variety International – The Children’s Charity.

Renowned for receiving the prestigious Variety International Children’s Charity Humanitarian Award earlier this year, the selfless humanitarian generously donated $100,000 to the organization. Derek now joins the ranks of past Variety International Celebrity Ambassadors including: Princess Diana, Meryl Streep, Jim Carrey, Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine CBE, Sir Sean Connery, and Sir Roger Moore to name a few.

Appointed by the Variety International President, Peter Drummond, Derek was chosen to assist Variety in its role of helping to improve the lives of special needs children around the world. Variety International’s thoughtful stewardship, coupled with O’Neill’s extraordinary expertise as psychotherapist, will mark a powerful start of the betterment of humankind.

Through their network of 43 Tents (or Chapters) in 13 countries, Variety International – The Children’s Charity has reached into communities across the globe since 1928, offering support and assistance to children and organizations that serve kids with special needs. Hard work, stewardship, and single-minded focus on the needs of the young, are what strives the organization in making a lasting difference in the lives of children, their families, our communities, and the world, one need at a time. “We are more powerful than we think. But we are only powerful when we come together,” says O’Neill.

Inspired by 30 years of martial arts training, Derek’s teaching philosophy has enlightened individuals from celebrities to politicians. The professed Good Samaritan has received numerous awards, which bear testament to his unconditional empathy and care for humanity, including the coveted Variety International Humanitarian Award.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Tampa, U.S.A. — Liberty Institute and the Family Research Council, two organizations committed to protecting and advancing religious liberty rights in the U.S., have joined to release The Survey of Religious Hostility in America—a compilation of more than 600 documented incidents of hostility to religion that have occurred in the United States, most of them over the last 10 years.

The organizations’ presidents, Kelly Shackelford and Tony Perkins (Perkins will serve on the Republican platform committee) will present the survey and its findings on Monday, August 20 at 1:00 PM EST during platform week of the Republican National Convention at the Marriott Waterside Hotel, Tampa, FL.

Shackelford said: “America today would be unrecognizable to our Founders. Our First Liberty is facing a relentless onslaught from well-funded and aggressive groups and individuals who are using the courts, Congress, and the vast federal bureaucracy to suppress and limit religious freedom. This radicalized minority is driven by an anti-religious ideology that is turning the First Amendment upside down.”

Perkins said: “As dark as this survey is, there is much light. The secularists’ agenda only advances when those who love liberty are apathetic. Let this be a call to stand for religious liberty in the U.S. The Obama administration no longer even speaks of freedom of religion; now it is only ‘freedom of worship.’ This radical departure is one that threatens to make true religious liberty vulnerable, conditional, and limited. This is no accident, and it has huge ramifications.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Ohio, U.S.A. – For the past three years, Rob Olson has hosted the “Breathe Easy Music Festival,” a local Minneapolis summer concert event, held in his backyard, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). This year’s event was canceled when he accidentally killed his 40,000-square-foot lawn with a non-Scotts product. The Scotts Company stepped in and pledged to restore the lawn, hopefully helping bring the “Breathe Easy Music Festival” back to the Olson’s backyard in the summer of 2013.

“We empathized with Rob’s story when we heard it. To us, he is simply a Dad trying to do the right thing,” said Rich Foster, vice president, marketing at Scotts. “With our vast lawn experience, network of leading turf grass experts and the fact that proceeds of the concert go to such a tremendous cause, the decision was simple…help him fix this lawn.”

With more than 140 years in the grass seed business, Scotts scientists are developing a restoration plan that fits his lawn and Minnesota weather. Recent consumer research has shown that most homeowners are not aware of how easy it is to maintain well-established grass, so Scotts plans to work closely with Olson on best practices for future lawn care.

“The disappointment I felt in knowing that I would not be able to have our event because of the lawn is beyond words. I can’t thank Scotts enough for not only helping with the lawn but to help make it possible to hold an event this year,” said Rob Olson. “And to have Bret Michaels play an acoustic set for us is amazing! What a blessing in disguise this has all turned out to be.”

Since its inception three years ago, the Olson’s annual concert has grown to a full day of activities including live music, swimming and games. Both of Olson’s children inherited Cystic Fibrosis, a chronic disease that impairs the lungs and digestive system, and affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). For more information about the “Breathe Easy Music Festival”, The Pourhouse venue, or to make a donation online, visit www.cffmusicfest.com.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Maryland, U.S.A. — As the end of summer nears, students are getting ready to head back to school. Whether it’s driving to college or carpooling with other neighborhood families, a properly maintained car is the safest, most dependable way to go.

“When your passengers are your children and their classmates, making sure your car gets more than a passing grade is extra important,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. ”A preventive maintenance check-up and having any repairs performed will give parents peace of mind as their children travel to and from school.”

To make sure your car gets high marks for safety and dependability, the Car Care Council recommends a 21st century tune-up be performed to make sure the following systems are in proper working order: battery, charging and starting; engine mechanical; power train control; fuel; ignition; and emissions.

In addition, the following items should be in peak condition for carpool season: tires and tire pressure; brakes; hoses and belts; air filters; wipers; exterior and interior lighting; and fluid levels, including engine oil, power steering, transmission, brake, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

The Car Care Council also suggests that all vehicles have a roadside emergency kit on-hand that includes items such as flares, a first aid kit, a tire-changing jack, a tire pressure gauge, jumper cables and a blanket. In addition, important telephone numbers should be stored in the glove box or cell phone in case of a breakdown or emergency.

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Los Angeles, U.S.A. — Weplay, the fastest-growing social media platform for coaches, parents and players of youth sports used by 1.5 million families nationwide, has announced a sponsorship deal with 30 Denny’s restaurants across Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo, New York. The restaurants will sponsor 200 local teams with a free, premium site on the Weplay platform and will launch a “Game Days at Denny’s” fundraiser to donate a portion of proceeds from food purchases to the teams.

“Supporting the local community is always important to us. Weplay allows us to interact with our customers’ families and their passions on a social, mobile platform that helps them manage their family sporting life,” said Tina Beattie, Vice President of Topline Restaurants, owner of the 30 participating Denny’s. “Thousands of teams, coaches, moms and dads come to Denny’s to fill up on game days, so we recognized this program as a great way to help them raise money and stay connected with them all season through Weplay.”

The fundraiser will kick off with 200 participating teams. Every time a Denny’s customer mentions a team by name, 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to that team. Sponsored teams will also receive a free, premium team Web site on Weplay as well as Denny’s special offers and content. Teams will also be featured on a ‘funraising’ leaderboard on Weplay, helping teams to keep track of how they are doing with their fundraising efforts relative to other teams in the program.

“We are excited to be working with Weplay and Denny’s to help raise money for our local Pop Warner organizations,” said Mary FitzGerald, COO of Pop Warner Little Scholars, one of the largest and most prominent Youth Sports Organizations partnered with Weplay. “Pop Warner teams are active in social media and this is a perfect way to bring a fundraiser to something our teams already use on a daily basis.”

Weplay has a user roster of over 50,000 youth sports teams that use the site daily to coordinate practices, games, snack duty, share photos and videos, and connect with their communities, among other activities. The social media platform has the backing of major brands including CAA, Major League Baseball, Microsoft, Gatorade, American Family Insurance, the Cartoon Network and Benadryl.

“Denny’s is social media savvy, because moms today are major users of social media platforms and demand mobility,” said Lane Soelberg, CEO of Weplay. “They appreciate tools that help them organize on-the-go, especially when they are connected with fundraising opportunities for their kids’ teams.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Washington, U.S.A. – Latino Leaders magazine has released its annual The 101: The List of the Most Influential Latinos, recognizing America’s Hispanic business leaders, top policymakers and cultural figures for making a positive impact in the Hispanic community and society in general. For the first time since its inception in 2005, the list has included a sitting USHCC president. In 2012, USHCC President and CEO, Javier Palomarez is among those recognized for their leadership in the Hispanic community.

“For the past 11 years, the Ferraez brothers and Latino Leaders magazine have played an integral role in showcasing the contributions of the most dynamic members of our nation’s Hispanic community.” says USHCC Chairman-elect, Marc Rodriguez. “We are deeply grateful to see the USHCC’s President and CEO recognized alongside such highly regarded icons.”

Palomarez is a member of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Advisory Council on Minority Business Enterprise and the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Advisory Committee on Diversity for Communications in the Digital Age.

Under his leadership, the USHCC has advocated for policies intended to benefit American small businesses such as the passage of free trade agreements between the U.S. and South Korea, Colombia and Panama as well as the Small Business Lending Fund Act – which according to the U.S. Treasury Department, has increased access to capital for small businesses by $5.2 billion in the first quarter of 2012.

In addition to his advocacy efforts in the public sector, Palomarez actively represents the interests of the Hispanic business community – the largest minority business segment in the U.S. – in the private sector as well; Palomarez is a member of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Advisory Board, Aetna’s Latino Advisory Council and the Comcast-NBC Universal Joint Diversity Advisory Council.

Palomarez has recently been recognized by the Bnai Zion Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to humanitarian initiatives in both Israel and America, as a recipient of their Distinguished Humanitarian Award for his commitment to the improvement of Judeo-Hispanic relations.

“Our mission to promote the growth of Hispanic business is aided by those who help publicize the varied accomplishments of our community.” Rodriguez continues, “We applaud Latino Leaders for helping to advocate on behalf of our community, and congratulate Javier on this honor.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Holly Springs, U.S.A. — Liberty Institute vows to continue with the defense of Opulent Life Church after the City of Holly Springs surprisingly announced it amended its discriminatory ordinance.

After conceding that their original city zoning ordinance violated federal law, opposing counsel representing the City advised the Court that the City had adopted yet another discriminatory ordinance that continues to prohibit the church from occupying space on the town square. Opposing counsel conceded that the Fifth Circuit now can decide the validity of the new ordinance.

Liberty Institute anticipates the Fifth Circuit will request additional briefing on the legality of the new ordinance, so the Court can rule on whether it also violates federal law and the First Amendment.

“We will continue to defend the religious liberty rights of Opulent Life Church against the City of Holly Springs’ new ordinance that is as discriminatory as, if not worse than, the original ordinance,” said Hiram Sasser, Liberty Institute’s Director of Litigation. “Churches should be able to grow and expand free from discrimination. Placing special burdens on them is unfair, unconstitutional and illegal.”

Then, Sasser added, “The City appears to be making good on the statement its counsel made to the U.S. Magistrate Judge that it will never allow a church on the town square.”

In the case Opulent Life Church; Telsa DeBerry v. City of Holly Springs, Mississippi , the Church sought to move to a new space in the town square area of Holly Springs, Miss. Due to zoning restrictions, the city told the church it must get the approval of 60 percent of local property owners and the city’s mayor before it can exist in the downtown area. This ordinance only applied to churches. Businesses and other groups were not subject to this requirement.

In January 2012, Liberty Institute filed a lawsuit on behalf of Opulent Life Church and its pastor, Telsa DeBerry, and sought a preliminary injunction, which the federal district court unfortunately denied. In March 2012, Liberty Institute filed an appeal, arguing that the city’s zoning ordinance unfairly singles out churches, and asking the court to reverse the lower court’s decision.
