The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Shopping in Lisbon doesn’t always mean going to large luxury malls of well branded trademarks and high quality products. In some areas in Lisbon there are street markets open on specific days of the week or the month. Some of these markets are specified for a certain group of products and some of them sell every possible thing.

Feira Do Relogio (literally means The Clock Fair) is the largest street market in Lisbon, which occurs every Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The market contains different stalls to sell products ranging from toys and clothes to meat and fishes. The prices are not fixed, so it is the best place to experience traditional bargaining and to shop in a Portuguese way. The market can be reached using the Metro’s red line to the Bela Vista metro station and also by public buses.

Feira da Ladra (literally means Flea Market) is another street market located in Alfama, the oldest district in the city. The main products of the market are electronics, computer hardware and software. Also, many other products can be found. Some of the items are new, while others are second hand. It is good distention for coin and stamp collectors. The market occurs every Saturday and Tuesday from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm. It can be reached by the Tram 28 and is a walkable distance from the Santa Apolónia metro station blue line.

Príncipe Real Jardim (Príncipe Real garden) is a street market of a different type. Every Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, an organic food market occurs in the garden. The prices of the organic food in the market are much cheaper than expected when buyers hear the word organic. Fruits and vegetables can found in the market as well as wines, vinegars and olive oils. The garden can be reached by metro using the blue line to Avenida metro station. as well as public buses.

Novo & Antigo market (literally means New and Old Market) is a street market that occurs every first and third Sunday of the month in the cultural center of Belém. The products of this market var from coins and stamps to books and electronics; also, this market is well organized so the visitor, will not miss any part.

The current failing economic situation of Portugal and the high unemployment rate in the country let the street markets be very popular among not only the tourists but also the local residents of the country who are looking for cheaper prices, regardless of the quality of the products.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Lisbon is a very rich city in Portugal with historical and cultural attractions. Some of the significant attractions in the city are located in Santa Maria de Belém, which is a civil parish (Freguesia in Portuguese) in Lisbon, also known as just Belém. Located about 6 kilometers to the west of Lisbon’s downtown, Belém is the Portuguese translation of the Palestinian city of Bethlehem. The neighborhood’s founders copied the name from the Palestinian city to have a religious blessing from the city in which Jesus was born.

A real touring in Lisbon must include visiting the monuments in Belém. The attractions include Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), Torre de Belém (Tower of Belém), Museu De Marinha (Maritime Museum), Museu da Electricidade (Electricity Museum), Museu da Presidência da República (Presidential Museum), and Museu Berardo. Museu De Marinha is a museum for the Portuguese navigation history of different times since the 15th century up to present day.

Museu Berardo is a museum of modern and contemporary art located within the Centro Cultural de Belém (Belém Cultural Center) premise. The Belém Cultural Center is the largest cultural center in Portugal; it accommodates cultural and artistic events around the year such as exhibitions, conferences, operas and ballets. Museu da Electricidade is a museum presenting the energy-development history in Portugal and promoting renewable energy to the visitors. The Museu da Presidência da República compound was the residence of the Portuguese royal family before establishing the republic; after that it became the official President of the Portuguese republic. In 2006 the government decided to convert the building to a national Monument.

Jerónimos Monastery is one of the main monuments in Lisbon. Any tourist in the city must see it; the capital of Portugal is very rich in historical and cultural attractions. The Monastery was a church built in the 15th century by the order of Prince Henry the Navigator (Infante D. Henriqu) to enlarge a small chapel, which served sea travelers. After that, King Manuel I of Portugal ordered the building of the large monastery after taking the permission from The Holy See. The Holy See is the head of the Catholic Church in the world, based in Rome.

The construction of the monastery was complete 100 years after the first order. It was designed in the Manueline-style architecture, a Portuguese architectural style representing the influence by the eastern Indian temple design. This was discovered during voyages of two famous Portuguese explorers, Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral, to the east.

In 1983 Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s worthwhile to visit inside the Monastery, which is opened for all visitors, not only for prayers. The Tower of Belém was built in the same era as the monastery, with the same architecture style. It would be a great idea to go inside the tower than just looking to it from outside as well: you will have a great view of the Tejo River and Belém neighborhood.

Other than historical and cultural attractions, Belém has some beautiful gardens such as Jardim do Ultramar (The Garden of Ultramar) which is a tropical botanical garden with lakes, water birds and peafowls. Jardim Vasco de Gama (Vasco da Gama Garden) which is a 4.2 hectare garden close to the Jerónimos Monastery.

Belém is well connected to other parts of Lisbon through public buses and a tram network, and well served with taxis, hotels and restaurants of different budgets. The big secret to save money in Lisbon is that most of the monuments are free on Sunday mornings.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In the city of excess, is there anything you cannot get enough of during your stay? There is one thing: amazing performances and music. Las Vegas is known for their wide-range of their big name shows, but the casino lounge scene is even more entertaining. Recently, Toonari Post had the chance to check out this aspect of the city. Patrick Sieben, Mark O’Toole, and Michael Grimm were all amazing performers found throughout Las Vegas. Together, the three musicians have more awards and fame in Las Vegas than there is room to list. Due to the variety of music all three of these musicians perform, their shows are great for all ages, and will have you up and dancing in no time.

Patrick Sieben

Toonari Post was able to watch Patrick Sieben perform in the Zebra Lounge at the Venetian, but he does shows all over Las Vegas six days a week. The Zebra Lounge is a very intimate venue that allows the crowd to feel up close and personal with the performer. Sieben is known for his great talent, and is even an Emmy-winner due to his involvement with U.S. soldiers. His set consisted of great covers, but also has amazing songs for his solo career. Sieben is extremely talented at piano and guitar as well as his amazing voice that allowed him to sound like a combination of Maroon 5 and Matchbox 20 with a unique twist. Sieben is a young, fun, and talented musician who has a great future ahead of him.

Mark O’Toole

Toonari Post was able to watch Mark O’Toole perform in Addison’s Lounge at the Rampart Casino where he performs every Wednesday night. O’Toole has been around for decades, performing for big names while also winning Star Search in 1994, beating out a five-time winner. He was diagnosed with cancer with only weeks to live in 2007. Now that he has beaten the cancer, he is working his way back to the top in the Vegas scene. During his set, O’Toole performs all of the great Las Vegas classics such as music by The Rat Pack, as well as country and pop songs. O’Toole is an amazing, humble musician who even takes the time to go around the ever-growing crowd to see how everyone is doing. While he is a well-known musician, his future is going to take him even further.

Michael Grimm

Toonari Post was able to watch Michael Grimm perform in Rocks Lounge at Red Rock Canyon, where he performs every Saturday night. Grimm broke through the music scene when he came the winner of America’s Got Talent in 2010. He is a soft-spoken guy until he hits the stage and blows you away with his voice. He has the voice that encompasses the soulful music of songs that made jazz and blues what it is today. He does do amazing covers of these songs, but has great personal songs as well. It will be exciting to see what his future holds when it comes to his musical advances.

The venues listed above are just a few places these musicians perform; check out their personal websites to see the wide-range of venue locations. For other suggestions with performances, definitely check out dueling piano performances, especially at Encore’s Eastside Lounge.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Flagstaff, U.S.A. — With almost three feet of snow blanketing the ski resort from a recent storm and up to another foot anticipated Wednesday, December 19, 2012, Arizona Snowbowl is ready to swoosh into its 75th Anniversary Season at 9 a.m., Thursday, December 20.

Mayor Jerry Nabours will be welcoming excited community members, skiers and snowboarders in Arizona Snowbowl’s 75th Anniversary Opening Ceremonies on Thursday December 20 with a ribbon cutting, hot chocolate and donuts at Agassiz Lodge. “Flagstaff is now and always has been a ski town,” said Mayor Nabours. “Having Arizona Snowbowl open in time for the holidays is a wonderful gift for the community and our visitors.”

All primary runs have packed and fresh powder and our trained staff are ready to load that First Chair.” said Arizona Snowbowl General Manager J.R. Murray. Named Best Flagstaff Attraction in the Arizona Daily Sun Best of Flagstaff 2012 Awards and a Top 10 Ski Destination by the Phoenix Business Journal, Arizona Snowbowl is anticipating a momentous season as it ushers in a new era with improvements, 75th anniversary festivities and snowmaking.

New infrastructure and equipment will make skiers’ and boarders’ time on the slopes more efficient and rewarding. Grading and thinning, along with new and wider terrain, have improved 134 of the ski resort’s 777 acres. “As part of our ongoing effort to improve the experience for beginners and introduce newcomers to the sport, two conveyor belts brought in recently will continue to shorten lift lines and make skiing easier for those who may be intimidated by the process of getting on and off chairlifts,” said Murray. “We’ll also be offering more than 500 free ski and boarding packages in January for Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month.

“We believe our emphasis on safety is one of the reasons Arizona Snowbowl continues to be recognized for its premier outdoor recreational experience,” said Ski Patrol Director B.J. Boyle. Snowbowl is the winner of three consecutive National Safety Awards for ski areas for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Meantime, Arizona Snowbowl is planning more family fun during its 75th Anniversary Celebration, February 1 to 10, 2013. Festivities include a free torchlight parade, a snowman building contest, sunset skiing and snowboarding, discounts, raffles, a fireside chat with the ski resort’s famous skiers, downtown events and the Arizona Snowbowl 75th Anniversary SnowDown, Friday, February. 8 at the High Country Conference Center.

“This is our opportunity to recognize Snowbowl’s history as one of the longest running established ski areas in the country, as well as celebrate our northland community for years of support and outdoor recreational enjoyment on the San Francisco Peaks.” said Arizona Snowbowl owner Eric Borowsky. To ensure a longer season and supplement snow cover between storms, Arizona Snowbowl expects to be using its snowmaking equipment for the first time this season.

Embassy Suites Flagstaff has partnered with the Arizona Snowbowl and is helping to celebrate their 75 th Anniversary with the Arizona Snowbowl Hotel Package which includes:

Two Room Suite

Two Arizona Snowbowl Adult lift passes for each night’s stay

Free cooked to order breakfast daily

Evening Reception with complimentary drinks and snacks

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Whiting, U.S.A. — As the classic holiday song goes, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” Or is it? A new survey reveals that some aspects of the holiday season can be irk-inducing.

The survey, conducted by coupon site CouponCabin.com, reveals people’s biggest holiday pet peeves, with traffic congestion and crowding topping the list. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from November 30 – December 4, 2012, among 2,691 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.

While traffic congestion and crowding are the top holiday pet peeves for 52 percent of U.S. adults, a variety of other holiday happenings made the list:

How early the holiday decorations, sales and store displays start – 46 percent

All anyone thinks about is gifts, not the spirit of the holidays – 42 percent

People who cut in line – 35 percent

Travel prices being too high – 28 percent

Too much holiday music on radio stations or in stores – 23 percent

Pressure to give gifts to more people than I really want to – 22 percent

When people leave their Christmas tree/lights up until late winter (February or March) – 16 percent

People who double dip at holiday parties – 12 percent

Stores that don’t give out boxes – 10 percent

Family members or friends who don’t bring anything when I’m hosting a party – 6 percent

Other – 6 percent

While the holiday season’s pressures can frazzle many people, others stay festive no matter what. The majority (89 percent) report they have holiday pet peeves, but more than one-in-ten (11 percent) said they don’t have any.

“The holidays are typically the busiest time of year for many people, leaving them prone to burnout and frustration,” said Jackie Warrick, President at CouponCabin.com. “Make sure to carve out time in your day to take care of your own needs, as well as reflect on what the true meaning of the holidays are to you.”

Whether it’s a pet peeve or a frustration, when asked what is their least favorite part of the holiday season, a random sampling of U.S. adults surveyed said the following:

Thanksgiving being forgotten.

Added pressure at work to cram everything in and get everything done before the end of the year, right when you want to relax and focus on the season.

Burnout! By the time Christmas is here I’m ready for it to be over.

Taking down the Christmas tree and putting away all the decorations.

Annoying TV commercials, like the one with the car wrapped in a giant bow as a gift.

Everyone feels the need to be artificially friendly.

Hangovers.

So many parties and demands on my time then in January, things are dead.

Spending money on gifts that should really be used for bills or savings.

The frenzy to purchase the latest electronic gadget.

Weight gain caused by the vast amounts of food and snacks that we buy, make or are surrounded by.

Having to go to office parties.

Using my credit card when I prefer to pay cash for items and usually charge some gifts during this time.

All the same songs are overplayed.

The political debates my family gets into after we’ve all had too much eggnog.

Putting the lights on my house.

Realizing how fast another year went by and that my children have gotten old enough that the Christmas “magic” is no longer there.

Saying goodbye to friends and relatives.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

San Antonio, U.S.A. — What’s better than relishing in the holiday season? Doing it in San Antonio, where only the very best of the holiday is offered in the spirit of the season. Here, you can relax with a cup of Mexican hot chocolate in mild South Texas weather and experience the sights and sounds of a San Antonio holiday you will always remember.

Each year, San Antonio shines brighter and opens its door—and heart—to locals and visitors. Nearly 2 million holiday lights and myriad festivities promise to make holidays memorable.

Almost 200 trees are wrapped with thousands of twinkling lights, 20 stone bridges are colorfully illuminated with various patterns. The City of San Antonio holds a Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest that encourages downtown business owners to compete for the most decorative and creative use of LED lights. The result is a lit up river and street that combines for one magical holiday destination.

The River Walk is also home to Fiesta de las Luminarias. This centuries-old tradition will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 16, when the River Walk is lined with 6,000 luminarias (small paper lanterns) to symbolically light the way for the Holy Family. Another River Walk favorite is the Holiday River Boat Carolers. Through December 23, more than 185 choirs ring in the holidays by singing traditional carols on cruising barges. The eclectic mix of participants includes bell choirs, folk groups and Latino ensembles.

Need more reasons to spend your 2012 holiday season in San Antonio? Here are just a few of the many festivities that await:

SeaWorld San Antonio’s Christmas Celebrations — (through December 31)

Wonderland Christmas at Morgan’s Wonderland – (through December 22)

Six Flags Fiesta Texas’ Holiday in the Park — (Through January 6)

La Gran Posada (December 16) – the symbolic reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter through historic downtown.

San Antonio Symphony Holiday Pops Concert (December 21-22)

20th Annual Valero Alamo Bowl (December 29)

Celebrate San Antonio (New Year’s Eve celebration)

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Los Angeles, U.S.A. — Reflecting its elevated status as a premier race, the LA Marathon has received the coveted designation as the nation’s best big city race in the January issue of Runner’s World magazine.

This significant recognition in the magazine’s featured 2013 Marathon Guide is another indicator of the race’s gaining popularity among runners across the world. Current registration totals for the 2013 LA Marathon, with its iconic Stadium to the Sea course, are at an all-time high and significantly outpacing historic totals, according to race officials.

Julie Weiss, an ultra-experienced marathoner from Santa Monica, summarizes her enthusiasm for the LA Marathon in the article. The LA Marathon was her first 26.2 mile-race in 2008, and 2013 will be her third time running the Stadium to the Sea course. The 2013 LA Marathon will also be the last marathon on her journey to complete 52 marathons in one year to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in honor of her father, who died from the disease in 2010.

“I wanted to make sure that my final marathon would be my favorite one, which is why I chose the LA Marathon to culminate this huge accomplishment,” Weiss said. “With its fantastic course, the LA Marathon is one of the most exciting races in the country.”

The 2013 LA Marathon will be the fourth running of the wildly popular Stadium to the Sea course, which gives marathon runners a unique opportunity to see the beauty and diversity of Los Angeles while racing from Dodger Stadium to the Pacific Ocean, passing many of L.A.’s world‐famous landmarks along the way. Among the highlights are Walt Disney Concert Hall, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Capitol Records Building, Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive and the Santa Monica Pier.

“We are honored to be recognized by the leading running publication as the best big city race in the country,” said Nick Curl, LA Marathon’s Race Director. “We continue to challenge ourselves to enhance the runner experience from year to year, and recognitions like these confirm that our efforts are working. Registration is also at an extremely brisk pace, so this year in particular, I urge runners to sign up now and don’t get left behind.”

The race is capped, so participants are encouraged to register online soon at www.lamarathon.com.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

San Francisco, U.S.A. — On December 11, Hotwire.com, a discount travel site, announced the top ten destinations where Canadians are vacationing this holiday season. Travellers seem to be taking advantage of the strong CAD when visiting U.S. warm weather cities like Las Vegas and Orlando, which have gained popularity since last year. However, big domestic cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver also remain an attraction.

Toronto rose from third in 2011 to take the top spot this year, while Las Vegas (sixth last year) and Orlando (fourth last year) rose to push New York and Montreal down to numbers four and five, respectively. Seattle, a popular border city, rose from ninth to sixth this year, while Vancouver held at seventh place followed by Miami, San Francisco and San Diego. The two newcomers to the list, Miami and San Diego, not only boast fantastic deals this season, but also offer warm weather and clear skies for those looking to ditch the earmuffs for a little sun.

“Based on what we’re seeing, we believe travellers are feeling more comfortable getting away during the holidays to enjoy the season’s festivities in fun U.S. destinations like Las Vegas, New York, and Orlando,” said Pierre-Eitienne Chartier, vice president of the Hotwire Group. “This is no surprise considering the current strength of the dollar and the appeal of a winter break. It also helps that many top destinations see a falloff in demand during big family holidays, which means vacationers can find deep price reductions on discount travel sites like Hotwire.com.”

The 10 most popular holiday destinations for Canadian travellers by hotel bookings, along with average nightly prices for each are as follows:

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Mooresville, U.S.A. — Penske Racing driver and newly-crowned 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski will appear Thursday, November 22 in America’s Thanksgiving Parade on the streets of downtown Detroit, Michigan

The 28-year-old Keselowski, a native of Rochester Hills, Mich., became the first Penske Racing driver to win the title in NASCAR’s premiere series on Sunday in the series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Driving the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger to the championship for team owner Roger Penske, a resident of Birmingham, Michigan, Keselowski also became the first Michigan-born driver to win the Cup Series crown.

On Thanksgiving Day, Keselowski will celebrate the championship by riding in America’s Thanksgiving Parade down Woodward Avenue, an 86-year-old tradition in Detroit.

“Growing up in Michigan for years it was a tradition in our house to wake up Thanksgiving morning and watch America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit,” said Keselowski, who earned five wins this season en route to the title. “It will be my honor to be a part of the parade this Thanksgiving and represent Penske Racing, my team and our sponsors as the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion. This is a great opportunity for me, especially considering my roots in Michigan and all that Detroit means to me and my boss, Roger Penske.”

“This is an amazing moment for Detroit and our entire community as we welcome Penske Racing driver and newly-crowned local hero 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski to America’s Thanksgiving Parade,” said Tony Michaels, President & CEO of The Parade Company. “We are incredibly grateful to Roger Penske for his commitment to our city and for sharing this remarkable moment with all ofDetroit on Thanksgiving morning.”

America’s Thanksgiving Parade, an 86-year tradition produced by The Parade Company, steps-off on at Woodward Avenue and Mack on Thanksgiving at 9:05 a.m. Recently recognized as one of the best Thanksgiving parades in the country by U.S. News & World Report Travel, America’s Thanksgiving Parade marches by some of Detroit’s most notable landmarks including the Fox Theatre, Comerica Park and the M@dison Building.

The two-hour parade will be featured on WDIV-TV Local 4, including a one-hour national broadcast reaching more than 140 major cities across the country. News/Talk 760 WJR will also broadcast live from the event.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, U.K. – Michael Palin highlights the beauty of Brazil in his new show while Hayes & Jarvis offer customers some great opportunities to explore the country for themselves.

Michael Palin is one of the most respected travel broadcasters in the UK and around the world, having fronted several popular BBC travel magazine shows such as Pole to Pole (1991) and Full Circle (1997). Palin has explored and documented a large percentage of our planet, his whimsical, measured style has always been a hit with viewers. Next on his list is the large, South American country of Brazil, soon to be catapulted onto the world stage as it prepares to host the 2014 Football world cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

Palin’s latest adventure is split over four episodes, each with a unique theme as he uncovers distinct areas of the country from the dense Amazon rainforest inland to the vibrant colourful cities located along the coast. Discovering the places and people of Brazil makes for a fascinating journey for Palin, but Hayes & Jarvis customers can enjoy a similar experience by taking advantage of some of the great Brazilian hotels and resorts offered by the luxury long haul specialist.

Some might assume that Brazil is all about Rio De Janerio, particularly since this city is becoming ever more famous, but Brazil offers plenty of other lesser known gems, and is a great place to explore the local culture or just relax and enjoy the tropical climate. Praia do Forte is Brazil’s answer to the classicCaribbean beach resort, but with added South American vibes as well as basking on the beach, holidaymakers here can bath in natural lagoons and marvel at the local wildlife as turtles lay their eggs on the beach.

Iguazu is another Brazilian haven for nature lovers, exhibiting one of the most visually arresting network of waterfalls in the world, towering even higher than Niagra. Set in a national park that also boasts toucans and butterflies, Igazu is perfect for the holidaymaker who enjoys the great outdoors.Visitors can explore from the comfort of a luxury hotel here, Hayes & Jarvis offer both the Bourbon Cataratas and the Hotel Das Cataratas.

For something a little more upmarket, Buzios is just north of Rio and is arguably Brazil’s most luxurious and fashionable resort. Made famous by Bridgette Bardot and voted in amongst the ten most beautiful areas in the world, Buzios has all the credentials of a jet-set holiday resort. Of course Hayes & Jarvis can offer the hotel to match, customers can choose between the Porto Bay Glenzhaus and the Serena Buzios.

Finally, Rio is the jewel in Brazil’s crown, a fun-loving city set on the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches between the Atlantic and the mountains, all the while watched over by the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Rio is about to become a world city so enjoy before the influx of tourists arrive, or go on a reconciliation meeting before going back for the sporting festivities that are soon to envelop this already lively city.

Catch Brazil with Michael Palin on BBC1 at 9pm on Wednesday nights, and visit the Hayes & Jarvis site for more information on the resorts and hotels offered in Brazil, as well as all the other great destinations available including Dubai, Thailand, Mauritius and The Maldives.

For customers looking for a truly customizable holiday, Hayes & Jarvis now offer a tailor-made holiday service, with a team of experts on hand to guide holidaymakers through planning their perfect multicentre holiday.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Amsterdam, Netherlands — On October 29, Hyatt Hotel Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht opened in the former public library of Amsterdam. A special cooperation between Paul Geertman of Aedes Real Estate, Marcel Wanders and Hyatt Hotels has resulted in a surprisingly multi functional hotel concept with an exciting combination of ‘office suites’ and studios for the international creative industry, and a permanent collection of video art for guests and visitors.

In 2008 initiators Paul Geertman and Marcel Wanders decided to do something special with the former public library. Geertman: ” Our aim was to merge the huge building with the intricate structure and diversity of the Amsterdam inner city. To us it was clear from the start that we would have a multifunctional approach, combining lodgings with work and culture. The creative theme became video art. ”

Now, five years later, the plan has been realised, a hotel in the highest segment operated by Hyatt Hotels. Opening under the Andaz brand, the concept seamlessly fits the original idea of combining different functions, as Geertman and Wanders had in mind.

In the building workspaces have been created: ‘office suites’ and studios for the international creative industry, who can further make full use of the hotel facilities. This attracts an exciting mix of guests, visitors and professionals to the hotel. At the same time the whole hotel is an exhibition of more than 40 video works of national and international video artists, as Yael Bartana, Erwin Olaf, Mark Titchner, Ryan Gander and Meiro Koizumi. In each hotel room you can view the complete collection on a special video channel. The building also accommodates the video art collection.

In his avant-garde design concept for Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, Marcel Wanders was inspired by Dutch culture, the history and location of the former library and the city of Amsterdam as a cultural ‘melting pot’. These contrasts create an exciting design. His interpretation has rendered a cutting edge multi-functional design concept.

This design concept emphasizes the contemporary character of Andaz as an exclusive lifestyle and boutique hotel, that reflects its environment and creates a platform for art and culture where people meet up and new worlds arise. Guests experience an exclusive and authentic stay in the heart of Amsterdam with an innovative and personal service of the highest level. The hotel is built with the highest quality materials and with special care for sustainability. Only the outside of the former building remains identifiable; behind the façade everything is new.

Video art with a personal signature

The video art collection is owned by The Mind’s Eye, a partnership of Paul Geertman and Marcel Wanders. Geertman: “The collection is a mixture of international and Dutch artists, young talent and established masters. Since we do not work with curators yet compose the collection ourselves, it has a strong personal signature. The past one and a half years I have seen over 300 works and in the first place I let my intuition guide my choices. The context of the works comes next. To us it is very exciting to see how people will respond to it. The first reactions are very positive.”

The Mind’s Eye will expand the collection further in the coming years. Among others an independent jury, consisting of curator of De Hallen Xander Karskens, Bart Rutten curator at the Stedelijk Museum and Nick Pritzker, will buy about four works for The Mind’s Eye collection on ART Rotterdam Projections, the first video art fair in Las Palmas. One of these works will be donated to the Stedelijk Museum and one to De Hallen. This work will be awarded with the Andaz Award.

The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is the first hotel in the world that focuses on video art entirely, making art a true link between the public and the city. ” In this inspiring ambiance guests and visitors are able to enjoy the video collection presented - collected with courage from the national and international top – to the fullest. A wonderful and unique initiative that I will follow with great interest and support wholeheartedly,” says Bart Rutten, curator Visual Art of the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. — On October 23, John A. Paulson and the Paulson Family Foundation announced a gift of $100 million to the Central Park Conservancy to sustain the fundamental role of Central Park as one of New York City’s leading cultural institutions and the world’s most extraordinary public park.

Mr. Paulson’s donation is the largest gift ever made to the Central Park Conservancy. It is also the largest gift to any public park and one of the largest ever made to a New York City cultural institution. It will sustain and advance the innovation of the Conservancy’s management and maintenance practices and allow for improvements to park-wide infrastructure, Central Park’s 21 playgrounds, 130 acres of woodlands, five visitor centers, and youth and family programming and recreation facilities.

The Conservancy’s management practices will be sustained and developed as a model for public-private partnerships locally and worldwide. Already, the Conservancy’s model has influenced the management of public spaces such as Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Battery Park in New York City.

Mr. Paulson’s gift comes at a time of unprecedented use of Central Park: with more than 40 million annual visitors, Central Park is visited by more people than any other New York City cultural institution.

“Central Park was created by two individuals – Olmsted and Vaux – in 1858. In 1980, a group of individuals banded together to restore it to its long-forgotten glory,” said Doug Blonsky, President and CEO of the Central Park Conservancy. ”Today, John joins these visionaries to sustain Central Park well into the future. This has always been a park designed for and sustained by the people – a celebration of the people’s right to relax, reflect and celebrate. John shares that vision, and thanks to him Central Park’s purpose will endure.”

“It is a great privilege to be able to contribute to the Central Park Conservancy, one of the most important cultural institutions in New York,” said Mr. Paulson. ”The Conservancy is responsible for transforming and sustaining Central Park as the celebration of culture, nature and democracy that it is today. It is my hope that today’s contribution will help it endure and flourish and inspire others to join me in ensuring that the Park continues to receive the support it needs to be this city’s greatest asset.”

“Over the past 33 years, the Central Park Conservancy has led the world’s most significant public park into the longest period of sustained health in its history,” said Thomas L. Kempner, Jr., Chairman of the Central Park Conservancy’s Board of Trustees. ”John’s gift helps ensure that its excellence endures for generations to come and acknowledges its importance to the cultural and economic health of New York City.”

“This generous gift will ensure that the park remains as Frederick Olmsted and Calvert Vaux envisioned it a century and a half ago: a peaceful oasis right in the middle of the busiest city in the world, and a community gathering place that is experienced by all New Yorkers on equal grounds, regardless of background or walk of life,” said Mayor Bloomberg. ”Central Park has an enormous economic impact on our city – 40 million annual visitors generating $1 billion in economic activity – and that’s in large part due to the great work of the Central Park Conservancy, the Parks Department and the New York City Police Department, who have worked together since 1980 to restore Central Park to its glory and take it to new heights.”

“During the past 30 years, Central Park has been transformed into the work of art envisioned by Olmsted and Vaux, thanks to the City’s partnership with the Central Park Conservancy,” said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Veronica M. White. “This exceptionally generous donation from John A. Paulson will help ensure that Central Park flourishes for years to come.”

John Paulson is the President and Portfolio Manager of Paulson & Co., a New York headquartered investment management firm with additional offices in London and Hong Kong. Mr. Paulson serves on the Board of Trustees of New York University; Board of Trustees of the Spence School; the Deans Advisory Board of the Harvard Business School; the Board of Directors of the 92nd Street Y; the Board of the Partnership for New York City; the Board of Trustees of the Central Park Conservancy; and the Chairman’s Circle of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Since 1980, the Central Park Conservancy has managed the investment of nearly $700 million into Central Park, almost $550 million of which was raised by the Conservancy from hundreds of thousands of individuals, corporations and foundations for the Park’s restoration and maintenance.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Myke Cole (MC) is a new and emerging author of the Shadow Ops Series. Across many literary genres Myke’s characters have found themselves at home with history buffs, fantasy fans and military thriller readers. In many ways, this is a new avenue of book writing, one that has great potential. With the second book “Fortress Frontier” due out at the beginning of 2012, ToonariPost (TP) caught up with him at New York Comic Con 2012. In person Myke Cole is personable and welcoming. He has no problem talking to fans who walk up to him as long as he’s not creating a traffic jams at conventions. It was a pleasure to be able to speak with him on his convention experiences and about his growing fan base as well.

TP: What did you think of this year’s New York Comic con as opposed to 2011?

MC: NYCC just gets bigger and bigger every year. On the one hand, it’s great to see the things I love finding a wider and wider audience. On the other hand, it takes longer and longer just to walk ten feet, and the place starts to smell like a monkey house earlier and earlier.

TP: What do you find the most interesting about New York Comic Con in particular?

MC: That geek is now chic. *All* of this stuff: comic books, fantasy novels, video games, cosplaying, tabletop gaming, etc . . . It was all grounds for being shunted into a social corner when I was growing up. There’s a temptation to be resentful of the Johnny-Come-Latelys. Clan membership is all about inside jokes, exclusivity and a sense of having a space that’s all your own. But the truth is that clannishness sucks, and if I love something, I want to share it with as many people as possible. Being a “geek” used to mean that you were part of a small group. Now, being a geek means that you have access to pop culture in some way. And that’s a good thing.

TP: Where do you see improvements for how New York Comic con can be executed?

MC: Eliminate bottlenecks. The escalators funnel people into packed cattle-chutes that create a trampling risk and make exiting the hall take a frustratingly long time. This could be fixed by replaced the narrow escalators (and the column between them) with a broad staircase. You’d need to install elevators for those with disabilities to have access. It would cost a lot to make these changes, but it would be worth it, and it’s not like NYCC (and the Javitts Center) isn’t turning a profit.

TP: Were there any of your fellow authors that you follow at NYCC? Also, you’ve mentioned Peter Brett but who else do you read in your spare time?

MC: Apart from Pete, I didn’t run into any other novelists who I follow at NYCC, but there are plenty of great writers I can recommend. My current favorites in fantasy/science-fiction are Pete, Daniel Polansky, Joe Abercrombie, Mark Lawrence, Scott Lynch, Pat Rothfuss, Naomi Novik, Orson Scott Card, Jack Campbell . . . there’s a new author named Wesley Chu who has a fun book about to come out from Angry Robot in May.

TP: For the growing base of Myke Cole fans, who do you think they are?

MC: It’s a diverse lot. I am very fortunate to have inherited a lot of Jim Butcher’s fans. There is a core group of die-hard Butcherites who I met at last year’s NYCC, and who became personal friends. They have been avid proselytizers for my work and have helped spread the word among urban fantasy devotees. I’ve also gotten some cross over from fans of straight military SF who follow Jack Campbell (because of a blurb from him). I did a bit guest blogging and interviews in the romance community online, and that helped me net some romance readers (which I’m really grateful for. I was worried that a testosterone-fueled, military story wouldn’t appeal to romance fans, and I’m really gratified to find it does). Peter V. Brett’s blurb (Black Hawk Down meets the X-Men) was perhaps the biggest boost to my career that I could ever hope for. I’ve lost count of how many people have told me they picked up the book based on that blurb.

TP: Similarly who else are you hoping to attract with this book series?

MC: If this series is ever going to be the mega-success I would love for it to be, it has to jump off the genre track and hook the straight military/thriller fans who enjoy Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn and James Patterson.

TP: What other conventions do you attend where fans can find you?

MC: All of them, I think. I’ve done Boskone, Balticon, Arisia, San Diego Comic Con, Lunacon, Confusion, Philcon, World Fantasy Con and WorldCon, just to name a few. I’m always open to more. A hotel full of like-minded people who will hang out, talk geek and even game with me? And it’s a tax write off? Hell, sign me up.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, UK — Leading car hire website, 121carhire.com, has revealed its top ten European car hire destinations for the month of October leading up to the last half term holidays before Christmas. While the Faro region of Portugal has taken the official top spot, Spain has dominated the board with 50% of the top ten located in the country.

With temperatures in popular tourists spots such as Spain, Portugal and Greece still standing comfortably at around 20 degrees during the day, families often make a last dash for a sunshine break in the half term October holiday week before the temperatures cool down in November.

121carhire.co.uk, a leading car hire specialist which supplies vehicles in over 15,000 locations across 115 countries, released its top 10 European destinations based on car hire rental figures for September-October 2012. The most popular pick up point was revealed as Faro in Southern Portugal, however Spain seemed the most popular overall. Malaga, Alicante, Murcia, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca respectively, all appeared in the top 10 alongside Lisbon, Paphos and Larnaca (Cyrpus).

Although nine out of the top ten locations were traditional summer sun holidays, in at number four wasGeneva in Switzerland, which at this time of year is between its summer season and ski season for travellers, making it quite a surprising entry.

Michael Bond of 121carhire.com said: “Despite summer coming to an end, car hire in Europe is still popular amongst Brits, particularly in mainland Spain. It seems holidaymakers are keen to catch the last bit of sun during half term and clearly these are some of the best locations to do that in.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, U.K. – With Halloween fast approaching, HostelBookers, the budget accommodation specialist, offers travellers a few spooky options for those looking to celebrate with spirits other than those found in a bottle. From a 200-year-old manse in Transylvania, to a converted jail in Ottawa, and a former brothel in San Diego, these properties offer as many tricks as they do treats for the intrepid traveller. For those fainter at heart, nice hotels with no ghosties will be the perfect choice.

There are loads of ghosts and ghouls around the rural setting of Captain Halpin’s Bunkhouse in Wicklow, Ireland. The hostel organises special evenings out to go and hunt them down. There’s a murder mystery night for all guests and a traditional Halloween party with apple bobbing and scary story time by the fire.

For a treat The Bracken Court is a four-star luxury hotel situated in the lively fishing village of Balbriggan, just outside Dublin. Golf, fishing, horse-riding and other outdoor pursuits are all nearby, while a variety of relaxing treatments are available in the hotel.

The HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel, which has been rated as one of the top ten spookiest buildings, is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa. Guests can sleep in the stone penitentiary’s old wrought-iron cellblock and can request the eerie ‘Crime and Punishment’ tour which includes death row and the gallows where criminals were hanged. One such criminal is alleged murderer Patrick James Whelan, who proclaimed his innocence until the moment of his execution, and is said to still walk the corridors. To calm the nerves, there is Mugshots Bar, which holds dance parties on Friday nights.

If you don’t actually want to be scared to death, take a break at The Embassy Hotel & Suites – Ottawa. They offer guests a perfect starting point for exploring countless attractions and endless adventures. With the cost of an entire suite less than a single hotel room, the Hotel offers comfort, choice and convenience with its 130 suites, each equipped with a full kitchen. There are two restaurants on site, a gym and a sauna. Parking is also available for a daily fee.

In San Diego, USA Hostels, located in the heart of the Gaslamp District, is renowned for housing a brothel in the late 18th century. It’s common to hear stories about the lights going on and off without reason, unexplained breezes, knocking on walls and more strange sounds. Also, if you happen to be a fan of old Western gunfights at the OK Corral, this might be the best place for you! It’s said that the ghost of SheriffWyatt Earp still wanders around seeking revenge for his friend Doc Holliday.

Located off Interstate 5, Chula Vista Hotel is only minutes from downtown San Diego, Tijuana, great restaurants, shopping and fun attractions. San Diego International Airport and San Diego Convention Centre are also only six miles away.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Detroit, U.S.A. — Candy and costumes will always be synonymous with Halloween, but according to America Haunts, haunted houses are increasing their market share in this growing retail scene. The National Retail Federation reports that Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday in the country.

The association of elite haunted houses that delivers fear-based entertainment to millions of thrill seekers every Halloween season credits the growth of this $300-$500 million industry to owners and operators now providing offerings ranging from Hollywood-quality make up and special effects to branded apparel, food and rides to customers.

“Running a haunted house has become a year-round job for many owners and their staffs,” said America Haunts board member Amber Arnett-Bequeaith. “Research shows that people enjoy being scared while in a safe environment such as attending a movie, going on a thrill ride or visiting a haunted house. We have a responsibility to make sure that each year is better than the last. We may have just over three weeks left in the season, but our members already are planning what their attractions will look like in 2013.”

Haunted houses and outdoor fall attractions like haunted hayrides, corn mazes and ziplines, also are important stimulators to the local economies in which they reside. In addition to their full time staffs, elite haunted houses hire anywhere from 200-300 workers each season. Owners also annually spend $50 million with vendors for supplies like fog machines, scary animatronic monsters, lighting equipment and masks and costumes, and an additional $85 million on print, broadcast and online advertising.

Nonprofits are another major beneficiary of the growing haunted house industry, according to America Haunts. More more than 80 percent of all haunted attractions across America are either operated by or help benefit a charity in the form of tens of millions of dollars every year. In 2011, America Haunts members donated more than $500,000 to nonprofits in the 20 U.S. markets where it operates. This year, the association is currently on track to contribute $750,000 through its efforts.

“Whether it’s working with businesses or nonprofits, supporting the communities where we do business is very important to America Haunts because our fans are the most loyal,” Arnett-Bequeaith said. “It is great seeing them come back year after year, particularly when they bring friends or family members for their first visit.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Sandy, U.S.A. — The Living Planet Aquarium begins construction of the 136,000-square-foot, $20 million expansion with a groundbreaking event scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 24 at 12033 S. Lone Peak Parkway. The expansion, which is set to open December 2013, will take visitors from the Utah deserts and mountains, to rain forest habitats, to the planet’s vast oceans.

The Aquarium has continued to grow since opening in a small space in 2004 at The Gateway and, since 2006, in Sandy at 725 E. 10600 South. The current 43,000-square-foot aquarium in Sandy is on track to land over 450,000 visitors this year, and provides science education to an additional 50,000 elementary school students statewide. “With the tremendous efforts of a remarkable team of staff, volunteers, donors and board of trustees the aquarium has grown over 50% through the recession, confirming the demand for a larger aquarium in Utah,” said Brent Andersen, Founder and CEO.

The new Aquarium, officially named the “Loveland Living Planet Aquarium,” will be located in Draper City at 12033 S. Lone Peak Parkway and will provide a new and exciting activity in which the whole family can participate throughout the entire year. In addition to pure entertainment, it will offer expanded educational programs, field trips, and hands-on learning that would not otherwise be accessible to Utah’s children. TheSandy location will close September 8, 2013 to allow for transition into the new building.

Conservatively, Loveland Living Planet Aquarium will attract 530,000 visitors per year as a family-oriented destination for Utah residents as well as tourists. “A larger aquarium will become a major destination spot which will enhance local and statewide economies by generating economic activity and supporting jobs,” said Rep. Tim Cosgrove, Aquarium Board of Trustees. “It is estimated that the project will support over 300 construction jobs and generate $800,000 in tax revenues for the State each year,” said Cosgrove. The Aquarium will serve to showcase ecosystems from around the world such as marine, freshwater and rain forests to name a few, and how they work together to form one global ecosystem, The Living Planet.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Long Island City, U.S.A. – Osprey Publishing, a leading publisher of books for history buffs, has four suggestions to help Americans commemorate Veterans Day this year.

Make a military history pilgrimage. Thousands of Vietnam veterans will be gathering on the Mall in Washington, DC from November 5-10 for a reading of the over 58,000 names that have been inscribed into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The wall turns 30 this year. There is a traveling exhibition of the wall, which will be in Dearborn, MI from October 25-28. Afterwards, it will be making stops in Richland, MI and Coatsville, PA. While in Washington, visitors can stop by the National Archives to see their new exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Listen to a veteran’s story. The Library of Congress has an ongoing program called “The Veterans History Project” whose mission is to collect oral histories of war from American veterans. Many of these interviews are available on-line at www.loc.gov/vets. In addition, Texas Tech University has an oral history archive that is devoted entirely to the Vietnam War. Audio and video clips from the archive can be viewed at http://www.vietnam.ttu.edu.

Talk to your children. The Veterans Administration has reading material, activities, and lesson plans for parents and teachers on their website: www.va.gov/kids. There are separate activity programs for elementary-aged children and older kids.

Read a book about war. Osprey Publishing has two new titles that tie in to the 50th anniversaries. The first is The Boys of ’67: Charlie Company’s War in Vietnam by Andrew Wiest. It explores the tour of duty of a unique army division that trained in Kansas, was shipped out to Vietnam in a navy vessel, and fought together in the Mekong Delta. Most soldiers during the war were sent to Vietnam on commercial jetliners and deployed with complete strangers. To complete the book, Wiest spent three years interviewing more than 50 members of the unit. Sadly, the members of Charlie Company suffered 80% casualties during their year-long tour of duty.
The second title from Osprey is called Blue Moon over Cuba: Aerial Reconnaissance during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The book looks at the role played in the crisis by a group of dare-devil pilots who flew low-altitude reconnaissance missions over Cuba in order to photograph Soviet missile sites. Unlike the photos taken by high-altitude U-2 planes, the Blue Moon photos were human readable. During the thirteen days of the crisis, these photos proved decisive in convincing the Soviets to back down. The book is co-written by USN Captain William Ecker who was commander of the Blue Moon missions and Kenneth Jack, who is an historian and webmaster for the navy photographer squadron, VFP-62.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Los Angeles, U.S.A. — Due to an onslaught of interest for NYC’s Blackout Haunted House’s premier installation in Los Angeles, the critically-acclaimed attraction will open its doors a week ahead of schedule to scare Californians beginning October 20, 2012.

After three years of rave – and terrified – reviews from New York media and public alike, Blackout Haunted House hits Los Angeles in 2012. Touted as ” NYC’s most horrifying Halloween theater piece,” by the New York Post, Blackout’s chilling design promises to be the most petrifying encounter you can have in Los Angeles this Halloween. Blackout has been enjoying record sales in NYC, and is looking forward to petrifying patrons on the West Coast.

Far surpassing the adrenalin of a 3-D movie or an amusement park ride, Blackout fully submerses you into the experience, surrounding you from every direction with the most frightening scenarios that exceed all imagination. Survivors experience raw, paralyzing fear as they strategically creep through a terrifying assault on the senses. For 20-30 minutes, you are the protagonist in your very own horror movie.

“Our focus for Blackout is theater that is raw and brutal, and unlike anything else out there,” says Josh Randall, co-creator of Blackout. “No two experiences are ever alike, and each one is uniquely terrifying.”

Blackout is open for horror this Halloween season at 207 S. Broadway, Los Angeles . After signing a waiver and agreeing to the rules, audience members are forced to walk through the haunted house alone. The space is open to adults 18 years of age and over, and visitors will find themselves amidst situations designed to induce terror and breach comfort zones such as tight spaces, intensely violent and sexual situations, and complete and utter darkness.

Tickets start at $35.00 and are available at http://www.blackouthh.com/.

For more information visit http://www.blackouthh.com or their Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Atlanta, U.S.A. — Perfectly timed to coincide with election season, a single-owner private collection of White House Presidential, First Lady and First Family mementos, memorabilia and gifts – gathered by a man who worked at the White House from the Truman through the Reagan administrations – will be sold at auction Friday, October 12, by Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery in Atlanta. This entire auction can be previewed online at http://greatgatsbys.auctionserver.net/

Mr. Bonner Arrington was a carpenter at the White House for 33 years. Involved in all of the day-to-day maintenance and special events that occurred within the public and private rooms of the White House, Mr. Arrington began, early on, to proudly cherish every memento that came his way while doing a job that, as a poor boy from Covington, Va., he never dreamed possible. Mr. Arrington’s wife Alphadine (“Deanie”) also worked at the White House from the 1970s to the mid-1980s.

“Even if it wasn’t a presidential election year, this collection would still attract enormous attention,” said Marie Kowalik, President of Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery. “It’s quite literally a historical timeline of 20th century White House history.”

The collection was consigned for sale by Mr. Arrington’s grandson who has stories of his own to share, from walking in awe as a small boy through the halls of the White House holding onto his granddad’s hand, to later years when his grandfather would tell him of building the bier for President Kennedy’s coffin so that it might lay in state in the East Room of the White House, to happier times of building the gazebo for Tricia Nixon’s White House wedding.

The vast array of items in the sale will range from original White House photos signed by Presidents and First Ladies, items with the Presidential Seal (such as cufflinks, tie clips, pens and cigarette lighters), original notes handwritten and signed by Presidents and First Ladies, and rare one-of-a-kind collectibles such as John F. Kennedy Jr.’s monogrammed diaper pin, President Truman’s monogrammed handkerchief, and President Teddy Roosevelt’s rocking chair.

Also being offered is an exact replica of the Presidential Oval Office Desk – “The Resolute”, made to the exact specifications of the original, and crafted by the same Old World artisans who crafted this desk for the Reagan, Carter and George H. Bush Presidential libraries.

The auction will be held in Great Gatsby’s 60,000-square-foot gallery located at 5180 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Atlanta, starting at 1:00 p.m. (EDT) – the first day of a huge three-day weekend sale. Internet bidding, with live audio / video streaming, will be conducted through Great Gatsby’s website at www.greatgatsbys.com. Telephone and absentee bids will also be taken.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Denver, U.S.A — Proclaiming Denver as one of the world’s great beer cities, Visit Denver will present the fourth Denver Beer Fest, October 5-13, 2012.The citywide celebration coincides with America’s most prestigious craft beer competition, the Brewers Association’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF), October 11-13. The nine-day Denver Beer Fest will include rare beer tastings, beer-paired dinners, “brewer vs. brewer” nights, beer tappings, brewery tours, firkin tappings and a variety of entertaining beer events.

Kicking off Denver Beer Fest on October 5, will be a tapping of a special pumpkin ale brewed by Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. The Mayor started the brewing process by grinding up barley, shoveling grains, and adding hops and pumpkins grown by Denver Urban Gardens to a special brew prepared at the Denver Beer Company, and in conjunction with the Colorado Brewers Guild.

Denver citizens were asked to go on Facebook to help name this new pumpkin beer. At a press conference at 4:30 p.m. on October 5 at the Denver Beer Company, the Mayor will reveal the name of his new beer and tap the first keg to offer a toast to Denver Beer Fest. The beer will be sold at Denver Beer Company until it runs out.

The website, DenverBeerFest.com, is a one-stop shop for all things beer connected with the festival, and also includes information about local Denver brewers and brewery tours.

It also includes information about The First Annual Denver Beer Crawl, October 5-13, where twelve of our favorite watering holes and brewers each feature different – and spectacular - Colorado beers. From the tried-and-true to the truly unique, the Denver Beer Crawl has something for every taste, including four different Hops Nouveau beers at Ernie’s Bar & Pizza, Belgorado at the Wynkoop, and Prost Hefeweizen at Highland Tap & Burger. Crawl participants can also enter to win tickets to GABF by entering our Denver Beer Crawl Giveaway on the VISIT DENVER Facebook page.

Denver’s tap houses, brew pubs, breweries, gastro pub and distillery scene continues to expand with the past year seeing a number of new openings. There are now more than 24 breweries in metro Denver.

Just some of the fun events during Denver Beer Fest include:

Chipotle Free Cultivate Food, Ideas & Music Festival at City Park, Oct. 6

This free, one-day festival, featuring food, live music and much more will also feature plenty of beer. Attendees can sample some of the best microbrews and wines from Colorado producers, including Del Norte, Boulder Beer Company, Great Divide, Avery, and many more—all in the Brewer’s Hall. What’s more, each brewery will create a special beer—just for Cultivate, Free.
