The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Santa Monica, U.S.A. — 429 Records is set to release “Starlight,” an all new collection of compositions by celebrated songstress Joan Armatrading. “Starlight” is a collection of 10 songs which emphasize her unequaled prowess as a singer and arranger. Always the consummate songwriter, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Armatrading explores new vocal phrasing technique with “Starlight” which add new emotional dimension and depth to her always incisive explorations of love and the human condition.

The lively jazz-inflected musical arrangements serve to buoy the constantly shifting lyrical moods. As on her last 429 Records studio albums “Into the Blues” and “This Charming Life,” Armatrading produced the album and plays every instrument to spectacular effect.

Long recognized as a pioneering force with a career spanning three decades, the Saint Kitts born Joan Armatrading has maintained an acclaimed and storied career. The three times Grammy nominated British artist has garnered countless accolades which include Top 10 albums and singles (“Love and Affection,” “Willow,” “Drop The Pilot,” are but a few), not to mention a #1 debut atop the Billboard Blues chart in 2007 (a first for a female artist from the UK).

She has made VH1′s list of the 100 Most Influential Women in Rock, has been nominated for a Brit Award, gave a command performance for Nelson Mandela on his 70th birthday at Wembley Stadium, received an Honorary Degree from Birmingham University.

“Starlight” is set to release on 429 Records February 26.

Track Listing:

Single Life

Close to Me

Tell Me

Back On Track

Always On My Mind

Starlight

Busy With You

Summer Kisses

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Santa Monica, U.S.A. — Smash Mouth, the band that gave you crazy memorable hits like “All Star,” “Walkin’ On The Sun,” “Then the Morning Comes” and “I’m A Believer” among many others, has signed with 429 Records and set for the release of their brand new album “Magic” on September 4, 2012.

The title track “Magic” is looking to be another monster radio smash as it is poised to enter the Top 20 of the mainstream AC Radio Mediabase Chart and Billboard Chart.

The band is back with original members Steve Harwell (vocals), Paul Delisle (Bass) and Mike Klooster (keyboards). Rookie players this time around are Randy Cooke (drums) and Mike Krompass (guitar). Krompass in fact, also helmed the producer’s mantle (having worked with Nelly Furtado and David Archuleta) capturing the quintessential Smash Mouth party sound as well as helping to take them to the next level.

The band will spend the rest of 2012 touring behind the new project as well as promoting the release of their rock and roll cookbook—”Recipes From the Road.” In addition, Amazon is offering an exclusive album package with six additional remixes. “Magic” is available everywhere today on 429 Records.

The release of the album and single are perfectly in tune with the band’s reputation for being the “sound of summer.” From their debut in 1997 when the smash hit “Walkin’ On The Sun” (played by KROQ before any label deal) powered their album “Fush Yu Mang” to double platinum sales, the band has scored hit after hit worldwide.

Smash Mouth has toured extensively with notable stops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay where they entertained U.S. troops.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Santa Monica, U.S.A. — Rock guitar legend Tommy Bolin was honored on September 4, 2012, with a box set release of his lauded solo release “The Ultimate Teaser”—a 3 CD collection featuring a re-mastered version of his classic album along with 2 CDs of outtakes and alternates.

Along with the 3 CD Teaser Box Set, 429 Records will release a 5 CD set, “The Definitive Teaser – Collector’s Edition” which will also include the 2CD Deluxe version of Great Gypsy Soul—a collection of Bolin songs recorded by a top notch roster of players who signed on to pay tribute to Bolin. The project was produced by Greg Hampton and Johnnie Bolin.

In the annals of rock history, Tommy Bolin occupied a brief but shining stint as a brilliant guitarist who wowed those in the know with his mastery of many genres—rock, fusion, funk, reggae and heavy metal among others. Along with a much lauded solo career that pushed the boundaries of rock/jazz fusion, Bolin played with The James Gang and Deep Purple which set him up for major solo guitar stardom which was cut short by his untimely death in 1976. “The Ultimate Teaser” and “Definitive Teaser – Collector’s Edition ” is available today on 429 Records.

Tommy Bolin was the quintessential guitar prodigy who focused his talents within the burgeoning rock/metal scenes of the early 70′s as well as mastered a highly lauded jazz fusion technique catching the attention of rock tastemakers and guitar legend peers.

It was just a matter of time before Bolin was making a name for himself playing on projects as diverse as Billy Cobham’s “Spectrum” project (considered one of the great jazz fusion recordings of all time), replacing Joe Walsh in the James Gang, playing session work on seminal fusion projects by Moxy and Alphonse Mouzon, to replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple.

With the release of his second solo album “Private Eyes”, what should have been a red letter moment for Bolin, opening up for Jeff Beck in Miami, sadly turned tragic as Bolin was found dead of an overdose shortly after the gig.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Santa Monica, CA, USA - John Popper, Chan Kinchla, Tad Kinchla, Ben Wilson and Brendan Hill, aka Blues Traveler, will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary with the release of SUZIE CRACKS THE WHIP—their 11th album and first for 429 Records.

The Grammy Award winning, platinum selling rock band have built up a considerable musical legacy based on their infectious, winning sound and their tireless love of touring resulting in a legion of loyal fans worldwide.

The band have mixed it up with their latest bringing in the powerhouse production team of Sam Hollander and Dave “Sluggo” Katz—aka S*A*M* and Sluggo (Katy Perry) and inviting a slew of special guests such as Ron Sexsmith, Spin Doctor’s Chris Barron and Crystal Bowersox who contributed both in the songwriting and performing and help take the Blues Traveler trademark sound to a new level.

Always the intrepid road warriors, Blues Traveler will embark on an extensive nationwide tour with Barenaked Ladies, Cracker and Big Head Todd & The Monsters beginning in July. SUZIE CRACKS THE WHIP will be available on 429 Records June 26th.

From their humble beginnings in the basement of Brendan Hill’s parent’s house 25 years ago, Blues Traveler has maintained a rock solid reputation enjoying incomparable musical milestones along the way.

Grammys, hit singles (“Run Around” remains the longest charting single in Billboard history) and platinum sales are only a small part of what keeps the band fresh and eager to keep performing. Staying open to new ideas has resulted in a collaborative new project that’s invigorated the band to a new high level.

Says John Popper: “I love these guys like my family but after writing the same way with the same people for 25 years, it was good to find a new outlet and take a different approach. Likewise, S*A*M and Sluggo helped remind us about what was cool about Blues Traveler in the first place. It’s easy to forget what’s cool about yourself after so many years of being you.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Macy Gray, newly signed with 429 Records, is preparing for the release of her stunning new album “COVERED”—a collection of all new recordings of handpicked songs she’s chosen to reinterpret in her own inimitable fashion. With a buzz kicked off by an announcement in Billboard and Rolling Stone, Macy is already confirmed to appear on prime media outlets including Conan, Late Show with David Letterman, Piers Morgan Tonight, Tavis Smiley, VH1 and more.

Produced by Hal Willner (Lou Reed, Metallica), Zoux and Macy Gray, “COVERED” tackles material largely drawn from indie rock songs from the last decade—interpretations her fans will be familiar with as she’s been performing them live over the years.

The album contains biting, dark signature tracks such as Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” or My Chemical Romance’s “Teenagers” which Gray subversively overhauls into something wholly her own. Also included are short skits featuring J.B. Smoove, Nicole Scherzinger and a guest appearance by Idris Elba.

“COVERED” will be released worldwide on 429 Records March 26th with a special iTunes edition available which contains exclusive remixes of “Sail” and “Here Comes The Rain Again.” In addition, Macy is planning a worldwide tour and has just completed the first video from the project. Helmed by famed director Robert DeVico (Pink, Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott), Macy’s first video from “COVERED” will be “Smoke Two Joints.”

The wildly colorful, party-inspired clip features Macy and her bandmates performing against a picturesque Hollywood Hills backdrop and will be available to media outlets this month.

Since her dazzling debut introduced this singular talent to the masses, Macy has forged an uncompromising musical path beholden to her own vision and garnering accolades at every juncture. With “COVERED” Macy has turned the cover album concept on its ear choosing edgy contemporary choices and approaching them in an innovative and uncompromising way. Not surprising considering she’s spent her career defying expectations and stretching musical boundaries.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

LA-based artist Rocco DeLuca will celebrate the release of his 429 Records debut “DRUGS ‘N HYMNS” with special performances at the Hotel Cafe on March 8th and an in-store performance at Fingerprints in Long Beach on March 9th. The album is available everywhere on March 6th. He’ll then embark on a series of dates with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros in March and with Van Hunt in April.

The show begins at 10:30pm on Thursday, March 8 @ the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N. Cahuenga Blvd, and tickets are available to the public for $10. DeLuca appears at Fingerprints the following day @ 7pm for a special in-store performance. Fingerprints is located at 420 E. 4th St in Long Beach and RSVP is required (phone 562-433-4996).

The new album finds the blues-steeped musician forging a solo path armed with his National guitar, distinctively emotive voice and 10 reflective, vivid song-stories. The hypnotically spare compositions conjure a world of characters seeking a certain solace and salvation while continually mired in the disturbed darkness.

The album was “anti-produced” by Rocco DeLuca and features guests such as the Echo Park Jubilee Tambo Flower Unsung Heroes Choir. ”DRUGS ‘N HYMNS” is a fascinating recording in its quiet intensity, conveying a wide swathe of emotions from quietude mixed with underlying dread to hopeful exhilaration.

Rocco DeLuca was born in Southern California surrounded by a vibrant arts community that inspired him to follow his muses at an early age. By seven he was learning to play, listening to Billy Holiday, Nina Simone and the Delta Blues heroes of the 1920s. He soon crossed paths and performed with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash and June Carter and Daniel Lanois - an amazing musical association key in the evolution of DeLuca’s unique sound whether fronting a band or playing solo.

Says Daniel Lanois: “I fully believe in DeLuca. I think that he’s got the power to be a contemporary troubadour, as I see it, and I hope I can be his friend for a long time, whether I am operating in the same limelight, ahead of him, behind him, in his shadow, whatever it takes, I’ll be there. The one thing that I love about Rocco DeLuca is he is driven by his own heart.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Macy Gray, newly signed with 429 Records, is preparing for the release of her stunning new album “Covered”—a collection of all new recordings of handpicked songs she’s chosen to reinterpret in her own inimitable fashion. Produced by Hal Willner (Lou Reed, Metallica), “Covered” tackles material largely drawn from indie rock songs from the last decade—interpretations her fans will be familiar with as she’s been performing them live over the years.

“Covered” will be released worldwide on 429 Records March 27th.In addition, Macy is planning a worldwide tour and has wrapped filming with director Lee Daniels (Precious) for his forthcoming film ‘The Paperboy” which also stars John Cusack, Zach Effron, Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey. The film will debut at Cannes in May with confirmed worldwide distribution in October 2012.

Says Macy on being inspired by Nina Simone’s cover songs: “She didn’t worry about what people would think or how they would compare it to anybody else. I saw how she just took that song and every song she ever did and made them her own. So I went in with the confidence that we could do whatever we wanted.”
