The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Living out your dreams can have some limits in a town with 300 people and no stoplights. For Michael Hollinger, Bodie Hope, and Dylan “Rocky” Riley, three young men from Arkansas, the chance to live out one of their dreams became reality and they received the opportunity to meet their long-time hero, Storm Chaser Reed Timmer.

Passion for storm chasing came at a young age for Michael, who enjoys going out and chasing storms with his dad. That enjoyment spurred an immediate draw to the television program in which meteorologist Reed Timmer leads one of three storm-chasing teams, and Bosch is a sponsor.

Bosch held a Twitter “retweet” contest, which Michael entered and won. He later tweeted to Bosch that he works at an auto parts store and has sold Bosch ICON Wiper Blades because he showed customers the Reed Timmer television spot. In the midst of a conversation with Bosch, Michael mentioned, “Me and my friends even advertised Bosch Wiper Blades at a community function when we built the Mini Dominator. We worked hard on it!”

The “Mini-Dom” video became an instant hit with Bosch. The idea was a natural and Bosch worked to create a new video and to introduce Michael and his friends to their idol, Reed Timmer. The idea was for the boys and Bosch to pull a “Switcheroo” where Timmer’s storm chasing vehicle the Dominator would switch with their “Mini-Dom” while Timmer was inside a local convenience store, all scripted, caught on tape, and looking like the ultimate prank.

The “Mini-Dom” was a fun project the boys worked on around Halloween, built with cardboard, PVC pipe, chicken wire, and a 4-wheeler. After Timmer saw the pint-sized Dominator, he was amazed saying, “It has the anemometer and everything, it’s all decked out. You guys really are big fans.”

Michael, Bodie, and Dylan received the opportunity of a lifetime. Two of the boys had never even been on a plane before and now they can say they flew out to Chicago and shot a video with their idol, Reed Timmer. Michael mentions, “This has been a dream come true.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

A band of kids, a camera, and a mysterious creature in small-town Ohio. These are the ingredients of J.J. Abrams new movie Super 8 which is soon in theaters after intense anticipation – not least because of the promising involvement of Steven Spielberg and the Amblin logo.

The movie itself was shrouded in mystery a few months ago, even rumored to be the sequel to Abrams’ Cloverfield. However, the story is happening in the summer of 1979 where a young boy and his movie-loving friends witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie. The inexplicable events that follow leads the kids and the local deputy to believe that something about the crash was far from normal – and as people start to disappear, fear spreads in the little community.

The previews have already raised expectations of a revisit to 70s and 80s flirtation with the “unknown” – movies such as Close Encounter of the Third Kind, E.T. and The Goonies, which all represent a variety of common family drama mixed with sci-fi and adventure, feel like the most likely points for comparison. No wonder either – considering the father of those classic movies is producing the coming feature.

In an interview to iamrogue.com, J.J. Abrams explains how the collaboration with Spielberg affected the direction of the movie. “If Spielberg had not been involved in the movie, it probably wouldn’t have happened and it certainly would have been different. I wouldn’t have felt as free to embrace that DNA, those qualities that I love, that I thought ‘well this movie should be an Amblin movie’, it should be a throwback to that time, to those kinds of films.”

When it comes to Steven Spielberg, the name seems to no longer refer to a person. The resonance of what the man has delivered to cinema throughout the decades will continue to make grown men quiver with excitement. J.J. Abrams on the other hand is not in that league just yet – depending on your taste, there has been hits and bloopers (the Star Trek re-boot turning out great while Mission: Impossible III… not so much) but generally, Abrams has spread his wings more as a producer than a director. With Super 8 though – best guess, it’s hard to turn down Spielberg when he asks for your seat.

Jokes aside, Abrams seems confident behind the camera and judging by the hype and the trailers – Super 8 may just be one of this summer’s biggest movie experiences. When a ten minute long clip of the movie was shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to a select audience, one Danish journalist from the newspaper Information was tripping over himself to express his excitement over the film. He even provided a frame-by-frame recap of the sequence which introduced the fragile relationship between Joe, our young protagonist, and his father, the local deputy, as they both struggle to communicate through the loss of their wife/mother 4 months earlier. The clip also included the fatal train collision and the first signs of the terror to come.

Safe to say, those handful of minutes sound promising. Super 8 is out this Friday June 10 in the US.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

“I am 21 years old, I take advantage of being young in order to experience new things, and hope that I won’t change as time passes by.”

Rafael comes from Paris, and loves to travel and discover new cultures. In a personal interview he said, ” I spend four months in Sahara in Niger. I’ve also been to Laos and Panama. What I love the most about traveling is the free drinks you get on the airplane! (Joking) You discover so many things, you get to eat and try new food, eat in restaurants any time, you get to see new girls in bikini, which is always nice for a man! I guess. But the most important thing is that every time I travel I have the opportunity to feel alive, because I am always learning and discovering new things. For me, if I’m traveling its like I have more chance that something will happen to my life, sometimes something great, sometimes something bad.

What is it for you being part of ToonariPost? ” I always saw this like a bright light. I just think this is an interesting experience, cause you get to know about other cultures. You are just discovering, and when you discover you make your own hypothesis and theories. It’s like being a scientist but without the boring part!”

When you write you are making sociological comparisons within cultures. How did you come up with this idea? “Well, I don’t believe in politics anymore. They are always the same thing; the economics don’t grab my interest. It’s always about capitalism and liberalism. The only thing that will, and keeps changing, is the culture. The culture is what makes something different, and there is much more to talk about when you are talking about culture.

What things do you take into consideration when you write? “Anything is funny, and you can even explain why the German, for example, behave this way and not that way…why the Panamanian behave this way and not the Ecuadorian’s way. With this aspect you are able to understand why this man is acting in a certain manner, I’m not taking this like a criticism cause nothing is wrong. You just get to learn the culture of the other. If something is normal for others and different for me, I have to accept it and mainly understand why they do or belief so. I just try to understand; most of the people offend cultures without any purpose, and they do this just because they don’t know about the other culture really.”

What is a message you want to give to your readers? “Well I would end this interview with two quotes of Shakespeare, that I think when both are connected they intend to sell a very interesting message.

“‘Tis better to be vile than vile esteemed”. When you are doing something, just do it 100 percent of yourself, go for it, and don’t mind what other people say. “My words fly up, my thoughts remain below, Words without thoughts never in Heaven go”. Body and mind have to be connected 100 percent, if you just are sure 99% about something don’t do it, cause this little one percent can change anything.”
