The Anaheim police brutality drama has not come to an end. Another violent protest against the deadly police shooting, which caused Manuel Diaz to lose his life and ended with 24 arrests and several injuries.

Protests have been going on for a few days, this time as many as 500 demonstrators and 250 police officers were confronting eachother for several hours. Most of the protesters acted peacefully but some became violent so the police had to use pepper balls and beanbag rounds.

The clash began after a City Council meeting in which different leaders from Anaheim, California voted to ask the U.S. attorney’s office to investigate the incidents from last weekend, which saw a shooting involving an officer that ended with the loss of Manuel Diaz’s life. Diaz was catalogued by the police as a known gang member but during the incident he was unarmed, which caused public outrage from the witnesses against the police. The protests have been going on since Saturday.

The council chamber surroundings were filled with protesters. At the beginning they were there peacefully, but as the place became overcrowded, some people pushed on the windows so the police had to push them back.

However, this was not the violence trigger, as the protesters just marched to the police headquarters and then back to the City Council. The event that lead to violent protests was the detention of a man who the police thought was armed, but in reality wasn’t, so the crowd started throwing rocks at the officers.

Sgt. of the Anaheim police Bob Dunn explained that the violent protesters seemed to be outsiders who wanted to provoke a violent clash between the police and the other protesters.  At one point, the animosity at the protest escalated with Molotov cocktails being thrown, and business windows were smashed and trashcans were set on fire.

The night ended with the detention of 24 protesters, 20 adults and four minors, with five people hurt, a police officer, two members of the media and two protesters, but no life-threatening injuries were reported.

The Diaz family is suing the city and the Police Department, and is asking, according to their lawyer, for $50 million in compensation for damages.

The Police Chief John Welter explained that in Diaz’s case, two officers had approached three men, including Manuel Diaz, who were acting suspiciously in an alley. Upon noticing the officers the men ran away and Welter explained that Diaz failed to obey the police officers orders to stop, and while in pursuit, he threw a package which was believed to be heroin on to the roof of a complex building.  The Police Chief did not explain the motives behind the police officers actions.

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit Southern California at 8:17 PST on Wednesday, June 13, shaking the new Cars Land attraction opening at Disneyland. The earthquake originated just outside of Yorba Linda, California but shook almost all of Los Angeles and Orange counties. Four aftershocks were reported, two of which were recorded by the US Geological Survey as being at 2.4 magnitude. There were no reports of injuries or damage from the counties’ police departments.

According to Fox News, people reported that they felt the quick, sharp jolt of the earthquake up to seventy-five miles south in Encinitas and fifty miles east in Redlands.

The US Geological Survey has also released that several other earthquakes have occurred around the world within the same twenty-four hour period. On June 14, the earthquakes that ranked higher than a 4.0 magnitude included Taiwan with a 5.2 magnitude, South of the Fiji Islands at 5.4 magnitude, the coast of Northern Sumatra with 4.7, the Turkey-Syria-Iraq border region at 5.3, and Seram, Indonesia with a 4.8 magnitude.

According to the National Geographic, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 or greater has a 99.7 percent chance of hitting California by the year 2037. The US Geological Survey took three years to complete the report that has the prediction. Around three hundred fault lines run through California because it is one of the sites where the Pacific and North American tectonic plates meet.

The earthquake originated only eight miles northeast of Anaheim, California, home to Disneyland. Wednesday night, thousands were gathered at Disney’s California Adventure for the opening of Cars Land, the most recent $1.1 billion addition to the park. The new addition is built on the old Timon Parking Lot and includes a racing ride called Radiator Springs Racers and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree that is similar to the Mad Tea Party ride.

The opening of Cars Land was occurring when the earthquake struck and Disney fans sent out several tweets about the incident. @Finding Mickey wrote, “earthquake just happened in so cal, felt at #carsland preview.”. The hashtag #JustGotScarier was used by many of the fans since Disney has been using #JustGotHappier to advertise the Cars Land opening.  Disney also tweeted (same as above) via @Mouseinfo, “Earthquake! I guess mother nature wanted to get into #carsland too.”

No Angels fans, that was not a dream. And as far as the other 29 teams and their fans are concerned – sorry, but that was not a horrible nightmare. Thursday morning really did begin with news that the Angels not only signed pitcher C.J. Wilson, but Albert Pujols as well.

Veteran outfielder Vernon Wells was ecstatic when talking about the addition of his new teammates. “You’re adding two of the biggest pieces in the market, two guys still young and in their prime who can dominate. This gives us a legitimate chance to get to the playoffs and farther,” he said.

All the excitement definitely begins with the shocking acquisition of King Albert. The Angels were not mentioned as a contender for his services until just 48 hours before the deal took place. It was clear that Pujols was potentially the most talented player to ever hit the free-agent market. Contrary to rumors that had his overall contract estimated around $300 million over ten years the Angels were able to get him onboard for ten years and $254 million.

But, when hearing these circumstances, the situation should not be misconstrued. Pujols was not shortchanged by any means whatsoever, and the Angels were not given an easily affordable check to write. The two sides agreed to the second largest contract in Major League history.

Only Alex Rodriguez’s ten year, $275 million deal that he signed in 2007 with the Yankees has ever been worth more. Angels owner Arte Moreno had no doubt that Pujols was worth the nice chunk of change. “This is a monumental day for Angel fans, and I could not be more excited. Albert’s career performance clearly speaks for itself. He has proven to be the best player of his generation.”

And while Pujols’ star power was the big story of the day, the signing of Wilson should not be overlooked. Unlike Pujols, most people were aware that the Angels were strongly pursuing the lefty starter in Wilson. The 31-year-old grew up just 12 miles from Angel Stadium and did not reassure the Rangers and their fans that he desired to return for another season in Arlington.

His hometown team showed interest and made him a suitable offer. “At the end of the day, my family was a big player in this, and my friends and stuff back home,” said Wilson. “Going back to where you’re from is a difficult thing to turn down when you have an opportunity, and it works out really in every way.”

Although Wilson was regarded as the best starter available this offseason, he did not receive a $100+ million contract like many expected before this October. His lack of a power fastball and struggles this postseason were the contributors in the end. He went 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in 6 starts during the 2011 playoffs.

Not only does adding Wilson give the Angels one of the top starting rotations in the league with Jared Weaver, Dan Haren, and Ervin Santana, but it also weakens the Rangers rotation. Texas has won the A.L. West the last two years and gone to the World Series both times.

Now the Angels aim to get back to dominating the division the way they did in past years. In just one day’s worth of signings C.J. Wilson and Albert Pujols have also changed the entire landscape of the American League as a whole. Get your tickets now, Angels fans. They won’t be available for too long.
