Well-known contemporary Japanese author and likely Nobel Prize candidate Haruki Murakami, will release a new book this April, according to his publisher. It will be his first book in three years since his mammoth 1Q84, which was originally released as a trilogy in Japan.

Details are scarce about the plot, but considering Murakami reuses the same themes in all his books, (to the point where the New York Times Book Review put together a “Haruki Murakami Bingo”) basic plot points can be pieced together. The main character will most likely be middle aged, enjoy drinking beer, feel alienated and lonely, and have an interest in old records. Cats will also make an appearance, as will teenage girls. Despite recycling similar themes and plots, Murakami has a large fanbase–1Q84 sold millions of copies worldwide.

It has been suggested that Murakami’s new work could be an expansion of the 1Q84 series. Murakami has said, “A fourth volume featuring an older ‘Tengo’ may come out…who knows.” Tengo starred as the male lead in the book. “What I can say now is there are stories before (volume 1) and after (volume 3).”

It is unclear if Murakami aims to write a new book or simply a few short stories, something he has done before. The title story in his collection Blind Woman, Sleeping Willow focuses on the protagonist of his novel, Norwegian Wood, several years after the events of that book.

It is highly likely that this upcoming book will be much shorter than 1Q84, given that the trilogy took him five years to pen.

Murakami’s varied influences may help explain his popularity with western readers compared to other Japanese authors. He spends his time reading writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Carver, Philip K. Dick, and Truman Capote, and also translated their works into Japanese. Most recently, during the composition of this current work, he translated Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. 

Although no translation has been commissioned yet, Murakami’s popularity makes it almost certain that one will appear eventually. However, fans who cannot read Japanese will probably have to wait two or three years to read it, the average time it takes translators to bring his works into English. In the meantime, bored readers can read through Murakami’s long list of other books: ten novels, three short story collections, two non-fiction works, and two out-of-print novellas (the first two stories he ever wrote). His most well-known works include Norwegian Wood, Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

Toni Morrison has long been heralded for her difficult yet beautiful books. Ever since she won the Nobel Prize, Morrison has become a household name most commonly associated with her early books, such as The Bluest Eye and Beloved, and is both loved and hated by high school students everywhere. Her latest book, Home, however, is a far cry from the lyrical works that earned her fame.

Set during the 50s, Home follows the story of Korean War veteran Frank Money as he embarks on a journey to reach his home in Georgia where his sister is supposedly at death’s door. Along the way, Morrison explores the lives of those who have left their mark on Frank and his sister, often going back and forth through time to do so.

An examination of racial relations, a theme that carries on throughout all of Morrison’s work, is still present. Absent, though, are the breathtaking narratives that strung together those themes so well.

Frank Money has seen friends die on the battlefield and innocent orphans shot, and when he returns to the United States, he finds himself in a world where just looking suspicious can result in jail time. These horrors are so commonplace and so undeveloped that they lose meaning within the book.  A plot summary might read something like a list of terrors with little else included.

Part of the reason for this is that Home is very sparsely written.  The novel begins, “They rose up like men. We saw them. Like men they stood,” and continues in such a fashion for the rest of the novel. Although this will certainly attract some readers, it is hardly like Morrison’s usual beautiful language. Although many characters have whole chapters dedicated to them, other than Frank Money, none are as fleshed out as they could be and many come off as cliché and boring figures, resulting in the reader feeling apathetic towards them.

Still, the book does have its good points. Some passages—mostly those concerning Frank Money and his past—are quite captivating.  Morrison depicts the veteran without any sugarcoating, showing exactly how the war has changed him. As he watches a drummer get carried away by his fellow band mates, still drumming the air as they take him away, Frank wonders, “Maybe, as with the drummer, rhythm would take charge. Maybe he too would be escorted away, flailing helplessly, imprisoned in his own strivings.”

Upon reflection, many will probably wonder just what the point of this flawed work is. At 150 pages, it is quick and to the point, and yet so many parts seem unnecessary. It is worth a read more because if you do not like it, you will be on the last page before you even realize it.

When I first heard that Blizzard Entertainment was going to produce an authoritative guide to the world of Diablo, I think I let loose a very undignified squeal of glee. Like many fans, I find the long wait for Diablo 3 to be a bit dispiriting, and the ‘Book of Cain’ looked like it might help tide me over until the game is released in 2012.

Historically, the Diablo series tended to emphasize action over storytelling. Players do not have to engage in elaborate conversations with NPCs, and it is possible to play the games without paying any attention to the underlying lore. As the series progressed, its mythology inevitably became more and more complicated, and Blizzard eventually commissioned several novels set in the Diablo universe. While their prose often left something to be desired, these books introduced important story elements to the series’ backstory.

The ‘Book of Cain’ takes material from the previous game manuals and the novels and reworks it into a coherent whole. Written by veteran screenwriter Flint Dille (if you are a fan of the old ‘G. I. Joe’ or ‘Transformers’ cartoons, you have probably seen his work), it purports to be an in-game artifact created by recurring NPC Deckard Cain.

As Cain reaches the end of his life, he plans to impart his knowledge to his adoptive niece, Leah. In doing so, he provides her with a narrative guide to the world of Sanctuary, starting with the creation of the cosmos and working his way down to the events that mark the beginning of Diablo 3. Longtime fans of the series will find much that is familiar, but there is enough new material to make the book a worthwhile read.

The inclusion of new material may rankle some fans. There are a number of places where story elements have been retconned. For example, the nameless Warrior from the first game is now called Aidan, and he has been transformed into the eldest son of the grief-stricken king whose madness played a central role in the Diablo story.

Some of the material from the Sin War trilogy has also been adjusted. While purists may greet these changes with angst, more sanguine fans will likely be able to accept them as inevitable side effects of writing about a fictional world whose ‘history’ has steadily evolved over the past fifteen years.

The ‘Book of Cain’ is lavishly illustrated, including several pieces by legendary fantasy artist Brom. Some of the illustrations have already been released, but many of them have never been seen by fans. The depictions of the battle between Anu and Tathamet and the angel Inarius in chains are particularly striking.

My only complaint about the art is that it is always rendered in monochrome. Of course, that makes sense considering this is supposed to be a handwritten manuscript, but I think some of the pieces would have been even more dramatic had they been in full color.

Video game tie-ins can be something of a mixed bag, but the ‘Book of Cain’ is definitely worth purchasing if you are at all interested in the lore of Diablo. It is not an essential part of the Diablo experience, but it will make your journey through Sanctuary much richer.

For tourists around the world, going to Barcelona could be a dream vacation. When they hear about the famous architect “Gaudi”, “Colon”, “La Ciutadella”, “Las Ramblas” and “Plaza Cataluña”, they will automatically think about Catalonia’s capital. Travelers get to know the city while visiting the most popular monuments, but from a local point of view getting to know the city takes longer.

Art, literature, and history are important reasons for visiting a city. However, Barcelona is not only known for cultural wonders. For football supporters, follow the Football Club Barcelona Tour. Only one ticket grants entrance to the New Camp, Barça museum or any VIP area popular among tourists.

Barcelona’s nightlife is breathtaking. There are clubs, bars, pubs or even karaoke bars for any age and style. You could find a wide range of bars and clubs:  House music, R&B, Latin music, Techno or Dance, whatever you feel like dancing.

One way to get a feel for the city is to check out a local party or tradition in town or around the city. Loriana Mitova, a Latvian girl coming from Ireland said, “The best way I could know the real lifestyle of the city was enjoying the best traditions and local parties. I also lived with a Spanish friend and that helped me to get different holidays which I have never expected to have.”

She also admits she “didn’t want to be a normal tourist. That is why I looked up the most amazing tours I could find”.

Being in Barcelona on St George’s Day is unusual for tourists. On that day, the tradition is special for couples. The girl must give a book to the boy, and the boy must get a red rose for the girl.

Because of this, the streets are full of small stores selling books and roses. The popular tradition has grown up and nowadays they even sell Barcelona Football club roses and any book that is on the market. People go crazy and look around for the best book for their boyfriends or the nicest rose for their girlfriends.

It is also very easy to keep children entertained in Barcelona, due to the amount of amusement parks in the area. “Port Aventura” stays in the memories of tourists, as well as “Tibidabo”. In summertime, aquatic parks are the best decision.

Because of the usual hot weather it is very enjoyable for kids being inside a swimming pool the whole day. Also, every family is free to go around the most beautiful beaches of “Costa Daurada” and “Costa Brava”.

In the winter, Christmas lights of “Plaza Cataluña” brighten the sky. In spring, indulge in buying books or roses for your partners on St George’s day. In the summer, the wide range of beaches offers many choices. Finally, fall is the perfect season to enjoy the different landscapes of colorful trees.

Clearly, it is not possible to visit Barcelona in one or two weeks. But if time allows, it is possible to really visit and experience the authentic life style of the city.

Being a tourist in Barcelona means following any situation that might come up without hesitation. Whether it is winter, spring, summer or fall, any time of the year is perfect for a Barcelona vacation.

According to Love Our Children USA, bullying is one of the most persistent problems in America’s schools today.

It usually affects to 12-13 years old teenagers and it’s related to a physical or psychic mistreat witch, in some cases, even causes suicide.

The battering topic, unfortunately, is in the top of the list of parent’s and teacher’s worries and all kind of artists are getting involved with it.
50 Cent is one of those artists who, writing, fights against this issue.

Bullying is the main topic of his next novel, titled “Playground”,  a semi-autobiographical novel that analyze how a kid becomes a bully.
With his third novel, 50 Cent is willing to discourage bullying and make a guide for his teenage son and other adolescents.

He’s childhood will serve to contextualise a problem that, according to National Institutes of Health, affects to 1 of every 4 kids in the US.
Remember: the release is scheduled in January of 2012. We will se if, as MTV sais, this new book hits the shelves.
