The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Causes often depend on donations to support its good initiative. These sometimes come in the form of food or water, other times money or clothing, or even volunteers and the capabilities of infra-structure. But what about words?

Believing in the power of words, the Doe Palavras Project, ‘Donate Words’ in English, was conceived to change the notion that helping other people through donation does not necessarily have to be in measurable assets. The Mário Pena Institute in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a hospital center focused on cancer treatment. They developed the idea of combining the need to support people going through hard times with the opportunities of social networks to develop something through the transformational power of the words.

Screens distributed in the rooms where patients receive their chemotherapy show messages sent by strangers who wish to encourage another human being struggling with life-threatening cancer. These messages are sent using Twitter.

The words can help motivate one person to the long path of a healthy treatment. The project goes beyond the traditional way to help and develops a simple and effective way to “donate.” The project explains that what the patients need the most are positive messages of love, hope and strength. They need to believe that the treatment will make them better.

The idea is really simple: people from around the world send heart-warming and encouraging messages using the project’s website or through Twitter, by adding the hashtag #doepalavras or #donatewords.

Messages such as “Strength and courage I send to you today for you are braver than you think and stronger than you feel” and “While there is a will to fight, there is hope of winning” will reach those who do not need food or water, but support on the road to recovery.

Doe Palavras also has an English version, Donate Words, and is available for free to any hospital that wants to use the system.

In seven months, the project has garnered 1,306,710 messages from 128 countries around the world and brought smiles to people who may have had to overcome the hardest challenge of their lives.

It has been an applauded initiative and has already received many awards, such as the Big Idea Chair of Yahoo and the Top of Marketing 2010. There is also a plan to make a book that compiles the best messages, which will then be distributed to hospitals.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Curitiba, a small city located in the southern area of Brazil, has several special titles: The world’s most ecological city, the world’s smartest city, and the city of hope.

Curitiba is a city which was planned and changed by the city’s former mayor Jaime Lerner, who applied his insight and wisdom into making the city a better place to live. In the 1950s, Curitiba witnessed an increasing number of people flowing into the city, as it experienced industrial development. As a result, various environmental problems began to surface. However, after Jaime Lerner was elected the city started to see hope for change.

The very first thing Lerner did was change government employees’ way to deal with the city’s budget. He encouraged them to achieve efficiently, and with less money. Around that time the city was considering installing a subway system, but it cost too much money to complete the entire process, making government employees hesitant to push for it. However, after being inspired by Lerner they thought of a new way to save money and increase efficiency. As a result, Curitiba’s unique bus system was invented. It was designed after the way a subway system works, but since the system used existing roads, they did not need to dig tunnels or purchase new subway trains, which would have cost a lot of money. Nowadays, many cities worldwide have adopted Curitiba’s bus system to save on their budget.

In the 1970s Curitiba wanted to build more parks in the city in order to improve its air quality. This was also met with difficulty because of the lack of budget to do it. There was, however, remaining room in the budget for building facilities to prevent the river from flooding. The city came up with an idea to build a new type of place that could be used for preventing the flood, as well as a public park. It made a huge hole around the river, which flooded frequently, and created a public park around this area.

In addition, Curitiba tried its best to reuse abandoned or old buildings in the city, instead of building new structures. They changed an abandoned ammunition dump into a day care center. Other old building were changed into a community center, as well as other amenities for people in the city.

Besides these works, Curitiba has achieved many other things which make the city a better place to live in. There are always things that people want to change but do nothing about. However, by putting what people imagine into practice, Curitiba has become a model city for other cities worldwide.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The acronym BRIC was coined by Jim O’Neill in his now-distant 2001 paper, but Brazil, Russia, India and China are still considered to be at a similar stage of economic development. The truth is, however, that the BRIC countries are not that alike. They have quite different economies – and quite different issues.

B is for Brazil

Brazil has in the last decade turned itself into a place where it is very expensive to do business. And government is to blame. Not only has the tax burden risen from 22% of GDP in the 1980s to 36% today, but the tax system is ridiculously complex. Unfortunately most of the money goes on pensions and wasteful spending on the unreasonably big government and not on the reforms and innovations.

The other problem is tiresome overregulation, even record low interest rates are of no use to the economy. Business leaders believe that uncertainty over regulations holding vital investment in infrastructure.

R is for Russia

Russia faces serious political problems and its economical structure may no longer be regarded as that of a BRIC country.

The major source of problems, of course, is the 2008 economic crisis. The Russian economy experienced the highest capital flight among the BRICs in the last decade. In August 2011 alone, USD 500 million was taken out of Russian investment funds, and the drop continues. The Russian Ministry of Finance estimated capital flight for 2011 to more than USD 80 billion, and that major capital investment cannot be expected before 2013.

According to Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, in one week in September 2011, investors withdrew 315 million dollars from Russian capital market, which is double the capital flight from China and India for that week.

Even the Russian press has noticed that the Goldman Sachs prognosis of a lower global growth rate for 2012/2013 has made Russia look like an outsider within BRIC.

Despite the fact that Russia is the largest oil exporter in the world and the second best in natural gas, it is not what is happening with the other BRIC countries.

I is for India

India lacks a big export industry. In this situation it is unlikely to see essential growth in exports in the near future. What is even more important that India has a substantial account deficit and to cover it $50-70 billion in investments is needed every year.

Unlike the other BRIC countries, India is still desperately poor. Widespread corruption and lack of jobs in the country with rapidly growing population are also the reasons to worry.

C is for China

China’s validity in BRIC has never been questioned. It is not only China’s rapid growth but also political weight on the international stage that put it ahead and above the other three.

And even though China’s economy may be slowing, it is still the best investment destination of the four big emerging markets. The thing is – market should stop thinking of China as a 10 percent galloping state. China is getting past being just about quantity. So the growth may be slowing but it is still at a very high rate.

The GDP of China’s economy has increased from $1.57tn to nearly $6.3tn, rising to number 2 in the world ranking. What is even more important, China has transformed into a state that exports capital and manufacturing from mainly agricultural country. And now it has more and more possibilities to strengthen further its influence on the international arena.

The magnitude of Chinese economy and Beijing’s ability to drive the economy away from troubles make it less sensitive than huge but less controllable states like India, the oligarchic Russia or overregulated Brazil. So is China just another brick in the wall? Not quite, not quite.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

“The eyes of the world are on Brazil” is an expression often used to represent the popularity of the country and its appearances in the media, for reasons such as the World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games of 2016. The country’s image in regards to violence and poverty is still really strong, and the government is trying to prepare for these big upcoming events. Rio de Janeiro is the city where are lot of the events will take place, and what is often emphasized is the contrast between nature and the city. There is another contrast, the one between the upscale neighborhoods and the favelas, or slums of the city.

Because of the favelas’ factors, which involve a highly populated area with the poorest people of the city living on top of the Rio de Janeiro Mountains, for many years it has been the perfect place for drug dealers and criminals to hide themselves. The police has had a lot of trouble trying to get inside, and the government is trying to change this reality through “pacification” actions. Many favelas have already gone through this process and nowadays provide a safer life and better infrastructure. But this is not the case with the Maré Complex, formed by 16 slums and located between the main access routes to the city. More than 130,000 people live there. This makes up to 2.3% of the total population of Rio de Janeiro.

One big problem has to do with children and the youth of the community. They don’t see opportunities outside of the favela and crime is for them a chance to get some money or status inside the community. As the government still hasn’t brought the pacification process to the Maré Complex, one good initiative offering good possibilities for its inhabitants is created by non-governmental organizationsn such as CEASM (Centro de Estudos e Ações Solidárias da Maré, in english: Centre for Studies and Solidarity Actions of Maré). This NGO is focused on contributing to the value of the slums and poor communities as an expression of the plurality of the city, changing ideas and guiding public policy. Since 1998 the NGO offers support courses helping young people get into the public universities. Entrance is based on a highly competitive test that usually favors people who can afford a good basic education.

These days, CEASM offers 14 different projects involving education and cultural emphasis. The population faces low self esteem issues, and many people think that there is no way out of the violence. CEASM wants to change this.

It already offers a library, computer rooms, journalism rooms and classrooms. Everything was built with the support of donations and community help. CEASM has about 100 volunteers, both paid and unpaid. Lourenço Cezar da Silva (pictured above) is the oldest brother of five siblings, and was one of the first students who was able to get into one of the most competitive universities of Brazil: PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro).

The economic support is based on donations and funding, but in the past year help has been cut for different reasons. The NGO is facing many problems to keep offering a better chance to the community. The CEASM volunteers usually try to apply to get some help from the government but say that lately many has been direct to culture and not to education.. He started as a student of the support course for university applications and today is proud and eager to help others starting out like he did.

Of course, the eyes of the world cannot easily see everything that happens in the daily life of poor communities in the big city of Rio de Janeiro, but maybe looking inside it will make it possible to change from the outside, instead of trying to hide the problems. CEASM and the Maré Community Complex need help in order to change from inside; it needs eyes to look where it matters. The number of young people who cannot benefit from the services is increasing, and consequently, so is the number of them who engage in crime and violence.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Tony Blair and a group of international statesmen and business leaders on June 19 said that a “clean revolution” – a step change in investment in renewable energy and clean technology – was needed to lead the world out of recession.
In an open letter, they said: “We have a historic opportunity to lead the world out of recession and into a more stable, sustainable future. The ‘Clean Revolution’ is essential if we want to ensure we save our economies from the crippling costs of runaway climate change, and create meaningful jobs and enhance energy security.”

The signatories of the open letter are backing the launch in Rio of the Clean Revolution campaign, a major initiative by The Climate Group and a range of government and business partners that calls for a ‘green growth’ push out of global recession.

Tony Blair, in a speech, added: “The Clean Revolution is the expressway to the Green Economy. Because of the current financial crisis, acting on climate change is more than ever before an opportunity to lead the world out of recession and to tackle the increasing geopolitical tensions created by the lack of energy security.”

Among the campaign’s backers to date are Philips and Suzlon, a major Asian wind turbine manufacturer, as well as other businesses and venture capitalists in China and the United States.

“Government and business leaders are realizing the opportunity in the Clean Revolution and are already leading the world into a more sustainable future. But it needs to happen faster. We need a step change. And it begins, today, at Rio+20,” said Mark Kenber, CEO, The Climate Group.

Speakers at the Clean Revolution launch event in Rio included Prince Albert of Monaco, Quebec’s PremierJean Charest, The World Bank’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Andrew Steer, Georg Kell, UN Global Compact Executive Director, senior representatives from Phillips, Suzlon and the Dutch Postcode Lottery as well as Professor Wang Yi of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the key architects of China’s low carbon strategy.

“We should not expect global rules to guide us though this ‘make or break’ decade.” Instead it will be voluntary leadership that will demonstrate that success is not only possible, but also profitable, and which in turn will inspire others to act. The Clean Revolution Initiative is designed to move things across the tipping point. We’re proud to be part of it,” said Andrew Steer, Special Envoy for Climate Change, The World Bank.

The Climate Group has launched a new website and a series of research reports demonstrating success stories of ‘clean revolutions’ under way in different parts of the world.

The Clean Revolution is a partnership of international statesmen and governments, business leaders and corporations, thinkers and opinion formers. It is coordinated by The Climate Group. It calls for a swift, massive scale-up of clean energy and infrastructure, and of smart technologies and design.

The initiative aims to create a tipping point for change by inspiring government and business leaders. It presents them with the evidence of the economic opportunities of the Clean Revolution, and profiles how innovative leadership is already transforming policies and markets around the world.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Tokyo, Japan – Daisaku Ikeda, president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Buddhist association, issued a proposal on June 6 stressing that empowerment of individuals and communities is vital to achieving a sustainable global society. The proposal puts forward ideas related to the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development opening in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 20.

Ikeda states: “It is unacceptable to consider the pursuit of sustainability as simply a matter of adjusting policies in order to find a better balance between economic and ecological imperatives. Rather, sustainability must be understood as a challenge and undertaking requiring the commitment of all individuals … constructing a society that accords highest priority to the dignity of life.”

The proposal, entitled “For a Sustainable Global Society: Learning for Empowerment and Leadership,” emphasizes that education is key.

Ikeda was a strong advocate of establishing the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) which ends in 2014, and he now calls for a successor framework, an educational program for a sustainable global society to start in 2015, focused on fostering agents of positive change. Such a program should give rise to empowerment, and beyond that, to leadership, if it is to generate real transformation.

Ikeda puts forward ideas for far-reaching institutional reform of the United Nations agencies responsible for development and environmental protection. He suggests the consolidation of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and related agencies to create one integrated “global organization for sustainable development.”

He proposes a more substantial collaborative relationship with civil society and a “committee of the future generations” as a forum through which youth representatives could advise the new organization on its annual plans and policies.

Ikeda also stresses the need for a set of sustainable development goals, with a focus on the local community as a site of both lifelong learning and action.

Examples of proactive engagement might include tree planting, disaster prevention efforts, strengthening local production and consumption, promotion of recycling and encouraging the introduction of renewable energy.

Ikeda’s view of humanity’s place on our planet is ultimately hopeful. He comments: “Although physical resources are finite, human potential is infinite, as is our capacity to create value. The real significance of sustainability is as a dynamic concept in which there is a striving or competition to generate positive value and share it with the world and with the future.”

In connection with the Rio+20 Conference, “Seeds of Hope: Visions of sustainability, steps toward change,” an exhibition co-organized by SGI, the Earth Charter International and the City of Rio de Janeiro, will be shown in English and Portuguese at the Planetarium of Rio de Janeiro from June 16 to July 15.

A 10-minute film, “Nurturing Seeds of Hope in the Amazon,” highlighting the environmental education work of the Amazon Ecological Conservation Center founded by Mr. Ikeda in 1992 will be launched at the Planetarium on June 15.

At the Rio+20 Conference, a roundtable discussion on learning for empowerment, pooling experience from education related to sustainability, peace and disarmament and human rights, will be hosted by SGI and other organizations on June 20.

Daisaku Ikeda is a Buddhist philosopher, author and peacebuilder. Since the 1970s, he has engaged in dialogues and issued proposals related to peace and environmental protection.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Chicago, U.S.A - Aon Benfield, the global reinsurance intermediary and capital advisor of Aon plc, has released the latest edition of its Global Catastrophe Recap report, which reviews the natural disaster perils that occurred worldwide during May.

Published by Impact Forecasting, the firm’s catastrophe model development center of excellence, the report reveals that two earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks struck northern Italy within a nine-day period, killing 25 people, injuring more than 400 others and causing extensive damage to the cultural heritage throughout the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, in addition to businesses and personal property.

An initial, combined economic loss estimate from both tremors stood at EUR5 billion (USD6.25 billion), following significant damage in the provinces of Modena, Ferrara, Reggio Emilia, Rovigo and Mantua.

In Asia, severe and prolonged periods of rain impacted China throughout the month, affecting at least 22 provinces and killing at least 102 people.

According to China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), at least 143,000 homes were damaged or destroyed during one prolonged event. More than 949,400 hectares (2.34 million acres) of cropland were also affected, contributing to a total economic loss listed at CNY16.88 billion (USD2.68 billion).

Meanwhile, powerful thunderstorms struck eastern Japan, resulting in high winds and tornadoes that killed at least three people, injured 59 others, and damaged more than 1,845 buildings in six separate prefectures.

Steve Jakubowski, President of Impact Forecasting, said: “The Italian earthquakes resulted in the largest natural disaster loss for the country since the L’Aquila earthquake event in 2009. The seismic activity was not unexpected, as Italy has long been recognised as a region exposed to the possibility of significant earthquake activity. Given the level of insurance coverage in the region, it is anticipated that insured losses would reach minimally into the hundreds of millions of dollars (USD). However, it remains too early to determine how negligible re/insurance losses may be from this event.”

In the United States, two periods of severe weather impacted central and eastern sections of the country; the first causing widespread hail and wind damage from the Dakotas to Maryland, resulting in an economic loss estimated at USD275 million, and more than 30,000 insurance claims valued atUSD150 million. A secondary severe weather outbreak across the central and eastern U.S. at the end of the month spawned significant damage as well. According to a preliminary report from the South-western Insurance Information Service, insured losses in Oklahoma alone were estimated at USD400 million.

Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville Beach, Florida at peak intensity with 70 mph (110 kph) winds but did not cause any significant damage, injuries or fatalities.

And wildfires burned in several U.S. states during the month, including the largest fire ever recorded in New Mexico.

Excessive rainfall affected areas of the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec in May. In Thunder Bay, at least 1,100 homes were damaged as well as businesses and infrastructure, and flood damage with a 100-year return period was recorded in Montreal, where personal property and infrastructure were widely affected.

Additional flood events were recorded in Nepal, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Georgia, Brazil and Venezuela.

In 2014, Brazil will be the hosting country of the FIFA World Cup. UAE in general, and especially Abu Dhabi, will be the main hub for the football fans and sports journalists from Asia and the Middle East looking for direct flights to Brazil.

Also, São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport would be a great transit point for the connecting traveler to other destinations in Brazil and other Latin American Countries. The airport is connected to all South American airports directly by different airlines.

Abu Dhabi will be a major connecting point to their original homeland for the large Arab community in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Most Arabs in Brazil are originally from Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

Additionally, it will ease the travel for students from Middle Eastern and Asian countries between Brazil and their countries for holidays and after graduation. Brazil is considered an attractive education spot for the scholar who is looking for high quality education with low tuition fees and living costs.

The new flights between the two cities will give a push to the growing business between the two countries. Brazil is considered to be the 4th largest trading partner to the UAE, with trade business valued about 2.85 billion US dollars. Officials in the two countries are hoping to expand the trade relation to 10 billion US dollars in the next 5 years.

According to the National, the official UAE English newspaper, Mr. João de Mendonça Lima Neto, the Brazilian ambassador to UAE, stated “We are witnessing significant growth in the bilateral relations between Brazil and the UAE and we are certain that Etihad Airways flights will create new opportunities for government, trade, tourism and cultural exchanges.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The International Sugar Organization and Datagro Consulting came together at the legendary Waldorf Astoria on May 16, 2012 for their sixth annual New York Sugar Conference. Hundreds of participants gathered together in the Starlight Roof for the full day event of discussions and presentations, all pertaining to the global sugar industry. This annual conference serves as one of the most important platforms in the sugar business where people from around the world have the chance to share and highlight current information on the production, consumption, and trade of sugar and ethanol.

A main focus on this year’s New York Sugar Conference was the obstacles the industry is currently facing, as the demand for sugar and ethanol are increasing. While the industry is constantly trying to create more sustainable measures of planting and harvesting sugar cane, the future of government relations are at times uncertain, having an impact on global sugar companies. As the world economy has changed over the last few years, the cost for sugar production has increased, also affecting the international market.

The conference kicked off with a speech from distinguished speaker Dr. Plinio Nastari, President of Datagro a world leader as a consultancy company that focuses on sugar and ethanol. As Brazil sits atop the international platform as the world’s largest sugar producer, Dr. Nastari focused his speech on the current state of Brazil’s production and went through a deep discussion of when Brazil will be ready for another expansion spree.

Dr. Nastari highlighted a few key aspects that have been affecting Brazil’s sugar cane sector in recent times. New technological advances in machinery have changed the production systems in Brazil’s sugar cane industry, which leads to higher costs for the companies, as well as higher losses. The financial crisis in 2008 to 2009 created a reduced rhythm in cane reform. The overall economy of the world has been affected, and the sugar industry was not spared. Dr. Nastari discussed how the rising costs of cutting, loading, and transporting sugar has changed, all of which have impacted Brazil’s cane sector.

Brazil’s natural environment plays a great role in providing an ideal setting for sugar cane growth, but has also posed as an issue. In 2009, Brazil suffered from excessive rains. During the following year of 2010 there was a long drought that stretched into 2011, which was then accompanied by frost. Although not fully developed, the canes had to be harvested prematurely. Pests and diseases such as orange rust and migdolus fryanus have also infested some of Brazil’s sugar cane.

Although there were many obstacles, Brazil produced 558.35 million tons in cane production in 2011 to 2012. Dr. Nastari estimated a growth of production in the upcoming year of 562.60 million tons of cane, signifying a continuous growth in the Brazilian industry. In 2011 to 2012, Brazil’s sugar production stood at 35.88 million tons. Of that, 11.35 million tons were consumed domestically, while 24.19 million tons were exported.

Ethanol is a main component in Brazil as well. There are currently 118 plants in Brazil that are accredited by U.S. EPA as suppliers of Advanced Bioethanol, as well as 15 installations that are certified by Bonsucro to supply sugar and ethanol to the EU. Dr. Nastari stated that “demand for ethanol exports to the US is mounting.” Last year, Brazil produced 22.63 billion liters of ethanol. Of that, 22.35 billion liters were used domestically, and 1.92 billion liters were exported.

“If sugar prices weaken from additional world production, Brazilian producers may choose to produce more anhydrous ethanol, for the domestic and export markets,” said Dr. Nastari.

While Dr. Nastari pointed out the short term challenges Brazil faces with their sugar planting and harvesting, he remained very optimistic on the future of the industry. Like many other countries, Brazil wants to find sustainable ways of production. Dr. Nastari stated that the potential is great but it comes with costs. He believes that future expansion is very likely to happen, keeping Brazil as a main player in producing sugar.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Syringes, drains, catheters, hospital gloves, gauze, bandages, towels, sheets, and pillow cases. Instead of representing a list of items found in an emergency room, these objects are a selection of used instruments from American hospitals that, rather than being properly disposed, were packed into containers before being illegally shipped to Brazil.

October 2011 is a month marked by unexpected episodes coming from overseas. On October 11th, the Brazilian Federal Organization, Receita Federal, apprehended a container in Suape Port (within the state of Pernambuco) loaded with hospital trash identified as “defective cotton fabrics” that arrived from the United States.

The North American container transported about 51.4lb of hospital debris, an illegal importation in Brazil. A second container with the same amount of trash arrived two days later. The supposed “defective cotton fabrics” were ordered by a Brazilian textile company called Império do Forro de Bolso. The company’s objective: to sell the sheets and pieces of fabric as flaps in the gourmet use.

The garbage importation not only infringed the law, but also presented a threat to the people that handled the material. Most of the collected material such as the sheets and pillow cases were stained with blood. The rest of it such as the syringes, drains, and catheters were already used.

Officials from the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency, Anvisa, inspected two containers on October 15th, and discovered more sheets and pillow cases, which also showed visible blood spots. According to correiobraziliense.com.br, employees said the fabrics were cut off in a such a way as to remove the hospital stamps.

During this process, fabrics were not washed out but released to industries. The amount of fiber found had the same container capacity as the 51.4lb of hospital trash. According to Folha.com, the trash acquisitions led the fabric company three fines summating $10 million, issued by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, IBAMA.

The ship company also received a fine for $3.3 million. In addition to the fines, IBAMA ordered for the containers to return to their country of origin: the United States. The Civil and Federal Police are also involved in investigating the Império do Forro de Bolso for other environmental crimes.

The company’s owner claimed innocence in the case of the fabric purchase. According to Folha.com, the owner, Altair Moura, claimed that the garbage found in the Suape Port was not acquired by his company, and that the material collected in the containers is not hospital trash. Rather, he claims to have ordered clean cotton textile.

The importation documentation identified the content as “defective cotton fabric,” but the Federal Police found the North American hospital stamps in the dirty trash. Fabric samples were collected and are being analyzed by the Criminalist Institute, Instituto de Criminalística (IC), to verify how contaminated the textile had been.

The shipping company, Hamburg Süd, warned authorities that 14 other containers with hospital trash might arrive in Brazil from Charleston Port, South Carolina. The Federal Public Ministry, Ministério Público Federal, is already working on the case in the attempt to prevent said arrivals.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

What if all the pressure was on? What if everything rested on your shoulders? Would you falter? What if you were in an epic battle for World supremacy? If your country, your home was counting on you to succeed; could you handle that? All by yourself…or should I say; SOLO?

Sorry to disappoint Star Wars fans, but this isn’t the Solo you were expecting. We’re talking about Hope Solo; the starting goal keeper for the women’s US National team. In USA’s match against Brazil, Solo made a spectacular penalty kick save to give the United States the edge in their comeback thriller making her an instant American hero. As great as that save was, it was merely an exclamation point on the play Solo has displayed through this World Cup. Her leadership skills and spectacular skill set has made her the undisputed top women’s goalie in the world today; so where has she been our whole lives?

Hope Amelia Solo grew up in Richland, Washington. She grew up in a rough child hood setting where the game of soccer was her only constant. When she was six years old, her parents divorced and she lived solely with her mother. Her father was a Vietnam veteran who was homeless for most of his life but stayed a major influence in Hopes life until his sudden death in 2007. Hope became a soccer star while she was in high school but oddly enough not as a goalie. Solo was a forward for Richland High School scoring 109 career goals and becoming a two time All-American. Solo received a full scholarship to University of Washington where they decided her athletic, and quick reaction abilities would make her a stand out keeper. They were right.

Solo became the Huskies all time leader in saves and shutouts and was a four-time All Pac-10 selection and a three-time All American. While in her sophomore year of college, Solo became a full time member of the USA national team. After her college career, and being an alternate for the 2004 Olympic team, Solo was drafted to the former WUSA team, the Philadelphia Charge. Following the Charges fallout from the league, Solo went and played with a few clubs overseas in Germany and Sweden while working her way up the American depth chart.

In 2007, Solo’s career looked to take off as she was named to the women’s World Cup squad. She was named the starter over veteran Brianna Scurry and gave up only two goals in four games while posting two consecutive shut outs leading up to a semi final match against Brazil. Then US coach, Greg Ryan, made a shocking move and benched Solo for Brianna Scurry. Scurry went on to have a dismal performance and the US lost 4-0 to Brazil.

Solo, clearly outraged, publicly criticized Ryan’s coaching move saying “It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There’s no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves.” Solo was then dismissed from the team before the third place World Cup game and did not participate in the post World Cup tour.

Hope Solo did not let the 2007 World Cup affect her play and kept training harder than ever. In 2009 Solo joined the Women’s Professional soccer league with St. Louis Athletica and became the WPS goalie of the year. She then went on to play for the Atlanta Beat and currently starts for the Orlando MagicJack and is easily the best keeper in the league. The WPS is where Solo competes and improves her skills, but Solo shines when she steps on the field for the red, white, and blue.

Watching Solo on Sunday vs. Brazil was inspiring to say the least. She is not simply a goalie but she is a leader. She steps out onto the field and commands the respect from the other team, while also imposing fear in their eyes. Solo’s outspoken attitude was seen as arrogance in 2007 and is now seen as, for lack of better terms, “swag” in 2011. Solo has became an American hero, sex symbol, and inspiration after one game and one save vs. Brazil, however Solo has been someone to look up to her whole life.

What if you were in a battle for world supremacy? What if you had your countries fate on your shoulders? Would you falter? Well, we know Solo wouldn’t, and now she looks to continue her fight for World supremacy as she takes on France in the semi final match on Wednesday. I wouldn’t expect her to be benched this time. Good luck Hope; America is behind you.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Who can forget the goal heard around the world that introduced us to the most famous sports bra ever? Brandi Chastain became an instant celebrity and so did her bra when she ripped off her jersey in dramatic fashion after clinching the World cup title in 1999. Chastain’s stripping goal act did not only win the United States the World Cup, but she brought attention to Women’s sports; an improbable task. 40 million Americans tuned in to watch Chastain and the US girls step into world soccer immortality that day; more viewers than the NBA finals. That was twelve years and three world cups ago. Today, the United States is the world’s number one team and has a good shot at winning this year’s World Cup; who knew?

The sixth ever, Women’s World Cup kicked off last week in Germany on June 26th. An astronomical 18 million viewers in Germany tuned in to watch their beloved German women take on Canada in the Cups opening game. With all the success in host country Germany; maybe there would be improved interest in the United States right? Wrong. The US viewership of the opening game came in at just under one million viewers; pathetic. Women’s soccer has been unable to catch the eyes of American viewers since 1999. Clearly, we need more sports bra cameos.

Where is the allure of the Women’s World Cup? Where’s the American pride? It doesn’t make sense that that 15th and average at best, men’s squad receives nationwide support. Yet, the US women, the world’s number one team, are treated as if they’re irrelevant. Something’s not right here.

Maybe it’s the slower speed of play from the Men’s game. Or maybe it’s the myth that women soccer players are less aggressive and intense. Either way, the last two World Cups (2003 and 2007) have been rating nightmares causing ESPN to swallow some pride. In search of a change (miracle), ESPN hired popular former US stars, Brandi Chastain, Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Brianna Scurry to commentate the cup. Every cup game will be aired on ESPN and broadcasted live on ESPN3.com. 2011 is supposed to be the year US women’s soccer relives its glory days of 1999; we’ll see about that.

Why you should watch:

America.

It’s a world-wide phenomenon displaying if our country is better than theirs. If you’re a true American you’ll throw on the red, white and blue, eat some wings, and watch some soccer babes win one for the US of A. Go America

The United States is the world’s number one team.

Listen, we actually have a shot at winning this thing. We’re number one because we’re really good and we have come in at least third the last three world cups. We can do this.

The girls

Guys, in what men’s sport can you commentate on who has the nicer butt? Well in the World Cup you can do that in every single game. Did I mention US goalie, Hope Solo, is single?

Women’s soccer is on the rise

This world cup is going to be extremely competitive. Hosting the tournament is reining back to back World Cup champions, Germany. The US is looking promising to win it all, while England has its deepest squad ever. Don’t look past Brazil, who has the world’s best player in Marta.

What else is on TV?

Nothing interest is going on in sports right now besides the World Cup. The NFL and NBA are in a lockout, baseball is in its boring mid-season stage, and tennis, well who really watches tennis?

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Brazil Supreme Court decision to reject extradition for the Italian ex terrorist Cesare Battisti could have heavy consequences on diplomatic relations between Italy and Brazil.

The sentence passed by the Brazilian Court just confirmed the decision of December 2010 of the former President Luiz Inàcio Lula da Silva, who announced on his last effective day as president his refusal to extradite Battisti.

Franco Frattini, Italy’s foreign minister, has defined the sentence of release shameful, and he said it was like “a slap in the face of the whole democratic world that fights terrorism”. The fist reaction of Italy was the recall of its ambassador in Brasilia Gherardo La Francesca, to discuss and study in depth the judicial bilateral agreements between the two countries, and to decide the steps to take to reverse the decision.

“What we have failed to achieve through the national judicial route we can achieve through the international judicial route,” declared the Foreign Minister announcing Italy’s intention to appeal to The Hague International Court of Justice. Also Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, and other Italian officials and politicians, condemned and criticized the Brazilian Supreme Court decision.

Brazilian former President Lula da Silva, cancelled his official visit to Italy this week, to avoid possible protests and disorders. During the Beach Volley World Championship, which is now taking place in Italy, a group of Italian protesters threw oranges at the Brazilian national team players, as a sign of disappointment for the decision on Battisti’s case.

Cesare Battisti, member of the Italian far-left militant group, Armed Proletarians for Communism (PAC) during the turbulent period of the so-called “anni di piombo” (years of lead), has been convicted of four murders committed in the ‘70s and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Italian Court. He escaped from Italy in 1981, after the first sentence for participation in armed group, first to France and later to Mexico, where he devoted himself to the writer activity. He returned to France in 1990 where he spent several years as a free man until 2004, when after the French government decided to arrest him and extradite him, he escaped to Brazil. There he was arrested in 2007, and in 2009 Brazilian government granted him the status of political refugee, until their final decision and subsequent release on 9th of June.

During all the years he was in hiding, Battisti always denied having committed any of the murders he was charged with. His defending counsels challenge the decision of the Italian Court, asserting that there isn’t any proof of Battisti’s guilt, and that the sentence was based only on the declarations of Pietro Mutti, a militant of PAC who accused his fellow PAC member in order to obtain a penalty reduction for himself. Many intellectuals, writers, journalists, politicians and NGOs’ representatives in several countries supported and still support Cesare Battisti.

On the contrary, the relatives of the victims and some politicians in Italy now express outrage and push to reverse the decision of the Brazilian Court. Meanwhile in Rome the protests goes on; vice-minister of transports Roberto Castelli, refused to sign the air transports bilateral agreement with Brazil, as “a sign of protest towards a country which showed no respect for Italy,” he said.

The relations between the two countries seem to be deteriorating more and more as a result of the Battisti Case’s conclusion.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

An environmental activist was shot and killed in Brazil. Jose Claudio Ribeiro da Silva, an activist that sought to protect the Amazon rain forest from loggers, was killed just hours before Brazil’s lower house of Congress passed legislation that environmentalists fear will increase deforestation in the region.

Da Silva and his wife were attacked by gunmen on Tuesday in an interior city in the jungle state of Para in northern Brazil, police said. Authorities were investigating the crime and no arrests had been made. The Catholic Land Pastoral (CPT), a group that tracks violence against environmental activists, said more than 1,150 activists, small farmers, judges, priests and other rural workers have been killed in disputes over preserving land since the 1988 murder of Brazil’s renowned rain forest protector Chico Mendes.

According to the CPT, most of the murders go unpunished. In the Amazon region, local governments are easily swayed by big industry loggers and ranchers that illegally clear forest to allow more farming. Federal prosecutors believe that the violence is ordered by rich producers who contract gunmen to kill anyone standing in their way.

In the most recent case, the CPT said that the gunmen cut off Silva’s ear, likely to use it as proof to whoever hired them that they indeed killed the activist. “The state will not tolerate this type of violence in our territory,” Para state Public Safety Secretary Luiz Fernandes Rocha said in a statement. “We’ve mobilized a team to investigate what happened and detain those responsible for the crime.”

Silva, 52, had fought with loggers before. The CPT said Silva and his wife, Maria do Espirito Santo, were tenacious Amazon defenders and were active against loggers who pressured rubber tappers in the region. The group said in a statement that the couple went out of their way to block roads, stop logging trucks and denounce illegal loggers to Brazil’s environmental agency and the government, all despite knowing they were putting their lives in danger. “In past years they received several death threats from loggers and farmers,” the statement said. “Last year, they escaped an ambush when gunmen went looking for them at their house.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

It has been a rough year for animals so far, particularly birds and fish. There have been countless massive and unexplained animal deaths since the year began. Even some with official explanations still seem questionable.

The New Year began ominously with 5,000 blackbirds literally falling out of the sky is Beebe, Arkansas. Officials have concluded that fireworks were probably to blame for scaring the birds and causing them to fly into each other and other objects. But, fireworks are launched at least two times a year in most communities and such a large number of bird deaths are extremely rare. Following that, it was difficult to keep up with the dying birds. Large numbers of birds were found dead in Sweden, Italy, Louisiana, Kentucky, and California. Even just last week, 200 geese in Ohio have died and many more are sick. Officials have offered a number of explanations for the bird deaths although nothing has been conclusive. Officials also stress that these occurrences are not connected. Are the large number of dead birds a normal thing that we have just focused on more or is it something else?

Marine life has also been dying at alarming rates. Hundreds of thousands of fish were found dead in the Arkansas River, not far from the first bird deaths in Arkansas. Fish were found dead in Florida, New Zealand, and Illinois. An estimated 40,000 crabs washed ashore in England during January. Two million fish were found dead in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. In Brazil, millions of dead fish washed up on the beach. Officials blame most of the deaths on cold temperatures.

More recently, some mammals have died in massive numbers. 10,000 cattle died in Vietnam and officials say that cold weather is to blame. However, the weather wasn’t really that cold and cattle can survive in colder weather. 200 cows died in Wisconsin, but that is one animal death with a definitive answer—the poor cows ate moldy sweet potatoes. Now, the dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico are turning up dead. Although, this probably isn’t very mysterious since millions of gallons of oil spilled there last year. 60 dolphins, many newborns, have been found dead in the last month. Is this all just a normal cycle of nature or is it something else?

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

You were probably like me and never took the talk of the zombie invasion real. You laughed when friends warned of the impending zombie apocalypse. You never read “The Zombie Survival Guide” because you knew the possibility of some sort of zombie creating fungi or disease was not possible. Guess what? We were wrong.

Four new species of the zombifying fungi, members of the Ophiocordyceps (or just Cordyceps) genus have apparently been discovered. The fungi are known for its unusual parasitism on ants. They are able to control the brain of the ants, turning the insects into little zombies to do as the fungi wishes before killing them. The fungus attacks the brain of the ant using a still unknown chemical and causes it to abandon its colony. The ant then bites into the fleshy part of a leaf and stays locked in that position until it dies. The fungus is then able to spread from the ant’s body to the leaf in order to repeat the cycle. The fungus will also produce a long stalk that sticks out of the ant’s head, shooting spores out in order to try to infect other ants. Not exactly coming back from the dead but still weird.

The new fungi were discovered at two sites in Brazil’s tropical rain forest. The original zombie-ant fungus, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, was first identified in 1865, and it seems to exist around the world. “So we knew, right off the bat, there was a range of other species within that,” said study researcher David Hughes, an entomologist at Pennsylvania State University. “I think it will turn out to be in the hundreds.”

I guess it is time to take the whole talk of zombies infecting humans a little more serious. I have to do some reading tonight.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Another UFO was reportedly seen flying over the skies of Brazil recently. Witnesses report that the unidentified flying object was seen near the town of Agudas in Sao Paulo state. But, was it really a UFO or just another hoax?

The footage, captured by two witnesses, was publicized on Brazilian TV station G1. The video shows a blurry picture of a disc-shaped object hovering in the clouds for approximately a minute during daylight hours. The disc then disappears in a bright flash of light followed by a trail of colorful bursts. Two witnesses allegedly saw the object as they were driving near Sao Paulo and they got out of the car to catch the event with their video cameras. The witnesses reported that they felt the ground shaking at the same time the object vanished. Other people in the area also felt the ground shake. According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program, there have been no earthquakes in the area. Chile was rocked by a few earthquakes in recent days, notably a 6.8 magnitude temblor on February 11.

Video-editing expert Philip Cavaca told G1 that the film was a well-made montage — but a hoax nonetheless. “It can be seen in one frame,” he told the station. “When the truck goes by, you can tell that the UFO was moved, which is un-noticeable to the naked eye,” he said. According to Cavaca, by freezing the image you can see the exact frame in which the “UFO” alters.

G1 did not release the name of the witnesses who supposedly saw the UFO. They did say that the video has captured the city’s attention and many residents are talking about the sighting.

Watch the video on G1’s site and see what you think. Real or fake?
