The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Alexandria, U.S.A. – National Industries for the Blind (NIB) secured its first commercial Section 508 Assurance Service contract with Buildium, a cloud-based property management software company based in Boston.

Under the contract, NIB will provide accessibility and usability testing and validation of Buildium’s online property and association management applications. These efforts will ensure that people with disabilities can successfully use the software. The agreement includes providing recommendations to improve testing for accessibility in future software development activities.

Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind in Texas, one of 90 nonprofit agencies associated with NIB through the AbilityOne Program, will provide services under the contract through a team of two individuals, one sighted and one blind.

NIB created the Section 508 Assurance service offering to address software, systems, and website accessibility and usability conformance with Section 508, an amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

“We are proud to work with Buildium in this initiative to make sure that people who are blind or have other disabilities face no barriers in using this innovative software,” said NIB President and CEO Kevin Lynch. “Buildium offers excellent products for the property management industry and we applaud their foresight in recognizing the need for accessibility.”

“One of Buildium’s core beliefs is that business software should be simple, affordable and accessible to everyone,” said Michael Monteiro, co-founder and co-CEO of Buildium. “Our association with NIB is a natural extension of that, and we’re very excited about what the future holds for our partnership.”

NIB is a nonprofit organization focused on its mission to enhance the opportunities for economic and personal independence of persons who are blind, primarily through creating, sustaining and improving employment. NIB and its network of 90 nonprofit associated agencies nationwide serve as the largest employer for people who are blind by the sale of SKILCRAFT and other products and services through the AbilityOne Program, established by the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act.
