Victor Cruz, of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, cut the ribbon to officially open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center on February 8.  Cruz was joined by Stephanie Winston-Wolkoff, Director of Fashion at Lincoln Center, Peter Levy, SVP and Managing Director at IMG Fashion, Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton, Naeem Khan, this season’s Mercedes-Benz Presents Designer, and Lisa Holladay, Manager of Brand Experience Marketing, Mercedes-Benz USA.   Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is owned and operated by IMG Worldwide.

“It’s an honor to be here to help kick off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York,” said Cruz.  “It’s been quite an incredible week for the City—our Super Bowl win, the great homecoming parade yesterday, and now the beginning of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  I’m very grateful to my fans that came out to support us yesterday and today and looking forward to checking out some shows this week.”

Known around the world for her charming look and impeccable walk, Christy Turlington has been a reference in the fashion industry since the late 1980s. Alongside Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, Christy became what the press would soon describe as a supermodel. Now, 25 years later, her advocacy campaigns have caught up with her flawless beauty.

In 2010 she founded ‘Every Mother Counts’, an organization that tackles the astonishing rate of  preventable pregnancy complications that cost a life every 90 seconds. A very personal project, she spells it out in her directorial debut ‘No Woman No Cry’. The documentary brings to our attention a brutal reality of life.

A radiant looking Christy is gracefully sprawled in a delivery room while filmmaker husband, Edward Burns, shoots the magical moment of their first child’s birth. Right after the baby is born, Christy begins to hemorrhage heavily, something that might have certainly been fatal had she not been a first world citizen.

A harsh wake-up call that prompted a journey through different countries, where mothers struggle to have a safe pregnancy. There’s no doubt that, although she‘s not completely retired from the fashion industry, her model status is the last of her occupations nowadays.

From her Twitter account, Christy Turlington Burns raises awareness through messages, videos, links and special announcements regarding the many events she attends on behalf of ’Every Mother Counts’. With more than 33,000 devoted followers, Christy’s twitter has become the voice of her innovative campaigns.

But instead of promoting a fragrance or a pair of sunglasses, she is spreading the word for fundraisers, conferences and new projects. And if she is to endorse a beauty campaign, she makes sure the big names that want her image also chip in financially. These days she’s getting ready for the next challenge, a marathon that will take place on November 6th in New York City.

It is a project that will hopefully raise a whopping amount of money and also a whole lot of awareness. We can only hope that besides thousands of people, a few supermodels-turned-supermoms join Christy in this adventure. In the last weeks, Christy has actively participated in various events such as a campaign called ‘GW Phones For Hope’ at The George Washington University, where she said they’re hoping to get over 20,000 used cell phones to generate new ones for developing countries.

Also she launched Avon’s new fragrance and got a $10,000 donation from the cosmetic company and will be soon premiering her new short film ‘Every Mother Counts: Obstetric Fistula’ at the Lunafest film festival. There is no excuse, we may be parents or potential parents but ultimately everybody has a mother and a special story attached to their birth too.

A few days ago, a generous mom-to-be took her twitter account to confess she had donated the amount of money she’d be otherwise spending on the baby shower invitations to ‘Every Mother Counts’. Such an inspiring action that will hopefully become a global reality thanks to people like Christy Turlington Burns.

The color green has long been delegated as a spring color – shades of green grass, green buds on trees, stems of flowers and so on. In March, green makes its appearance on St. Patrick’s day. Green also makes its appearance during the Christmas season as a partner to its complimentary color, red.

However, expect to see darker shades of green in this fall collection, including forest greens, emeralds, and pea greens. Designers, including Diane von Furstenberg and Alberta Ferretti, have been showcasing greens at fashion weeks around the world.

A forest green jacket can make a statement against the backdrop of a cloudy, rainy, snowy city. Kelly green pants paired with a neutral top can add a splash of color to an otherwise boring outfit. Green can also be paired with red; however, be sure the shades don’t scream “Christmas season.” A burgundy or plum works well.

Women can expect to see spring patterns, such as laces and florals, in the fall, albeit used in different ways. Mixing animals prints will also be seen. However, be careful to use animal prints sparingly – don’t create a whole outfit of animal prints.

Another trend this fall is the color red – on lips. Pair a red lip with a nude eye. Try wearing a red lip with a green pant and a neutral top. Or go the other way, and pair a smoky eye with a nude lip.

For men, varsity sportswear is going to take center of attention. Letterman’s jackets from high school and varsity cardigans will be seen. Horizontal stripes, herringbone sport coats, and tweed jackets will be popular patterns and textures. Cuffed pants will be trendy this fall, so socks will be on display — Time to bring out your most colorful, crazy socks, men!

For both sexes, bright colors will be popular. Oscar de la Renta, Chloe, and Calvin Klein brought color blocking on their dresses, shoes, and bags. Aside from rich greens for any article of clothing, shades of red, blue, and yellow will be popular denim colors. Cobalt blues, mustard yellows, and even purples will be fun additions to an otherwise drab fall or winter wardrobe.

Hats are also in for men and women – the popular straw fedoras from the summer will be updated for fall with thicker (warmer) materials, such as wool and velvet. Women will also see cloche hats.

One suggestion to pull any of these trends is to focus on one or two items. Instead of creating an entire outfit made of bright colors, pair something bright with something neutral. Don’t forget that shoes and accessories can be bright additions to any outfit, while pants and shirts can be neutrals. Try a patterned shirt and neutral pant, or the other way around.
