The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

If you are looking for great music whether it’s the vocals, rhythms, or lyrics, Colossus is the whole deal. The band consists of Alex Gutzmer (vocals), Jim Hughes (guitar), Zach Moll (bass), and Israel Wipf (drums). Toonari Post recently had the opportunity to see Colossus perform in Cedar Falls, Iowa, as well as a chance to sit down for an interview with the vocalist, Alex Gutzmer.

Toonari Post (TP): For people intrigued by your band’s name, what is the story behind it?

Alex Gutzmer (AG): The story behind Colossus is that colossus is the idea of something being so large and so vast that you cannot comprehend it. You could search your whole life & you will never figure out its mysteries. That is our concept on God. That He is so vast, so complex, and so great that you will not fully understand His fully until you are face to face with Him.

TP: For people who are unfamiliar with your band, how do you describe the musical genre you play?

AG: Well, first off I usually say we are a Christian rock band. We are first and foremost a ministry. We are a Christian band and our whole purpose is to spread the Gospel & Jesus Christ. Rock is kind of misleading but I don’t want to scare people away with the genre; but we are definitely more like a heavy rock band.

TP: You have kind of already touched base on this, but can you sum up you’re your whole purpose for this band?

AG: Again it is ministry; helping people to know Christ and actually building friendships with the fans. Personally getting to know them, learning their faces, their names. We want to be able to show them love like Christ loves us.

TP: If you weren’t in a band right now, what would you be doing?

AG: If I wasn’t in a band I would be doing MMA; I would be fighting. It’s what I do on the side, so that is what I would be full time.

TP: Are there any specific bands that were inspiration to get a band together, and continue to be inspiring?

AG: Meshugga is a huge influence on our styles and rhythms. Your Memorial are really good friends of ours and they have helped us every step of the way both with our band as well as with our spiritual walk with Christ. For Today are great friends too who have also helped me both musically and spiritually as well. They are a huge inspiration to us.

TP: Where do you get the most out of being in a band? Is it recording, writing, performing? Any specific part?

AG: Most out of being in a band is honestly after our performance and getting to talk with others and making new friends all while spreading the Word is the biggest perk. New friends are the best, whether they love or hate our music, that doesn’t matter as much as the friendships.

TP: Anything else you want our readers to hear?

AG: Any other bands who are labeling themselves as Christians, or who want to be a band of ministry, please make sure you know what you’re doing before you go out. Have a true relationship with Christ before you go out to spread the Word. It is a huge responsibility as a band, and I pray that future Christian artists will stay in the Word, pray, and have the courage to talk to other people, and change lives of maybe one person, thousand, one million. If you help the world, anyone in anyway, I feel you have succeeded. So keep Christ your center and your focus and everything else will fall into place.
