The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

One of Dark Horse’s most-anticipated new series premiered in the company’s flagship anthology in Dark Horse Presents #9.
Dark Horse celebrates this event with additional news recently that Caitlín R. Kiernan’s highly anticipated new series will now be included in both of Dark Horse’s Free Comic Book Day books, with two pages in each book, to expose this exciting new series to as wide an audience as possible.

Alabaster is based on Caitlín R. Kiernan’s fan-favorite Dancy Flammarion stories, a dark fantasy series centered around a teenage protagonist of striking appearance and hidden, terrible depths. For nearly as long as she can remember, seventeen-year-old Dancy Flammarion has fought monsters, cutting a bloody swath through the demons and dark things of the world, aimed like a weapon by a merciless seraph more taskmaster than guardian.

This special four-page story, told across Dark Horse’s two FCBD offerings, will give readers a compelling glimpse into Dancy’s world and the blurry line that separates her from the angels she serves—and the monsters she hunts.

Look for Alabaster: Shelter in the back of both Dark Horse’s Star Wars/Serenity and Buffy/The Guild Free Comic Book Day comics on Saturday, May 5. Remember, you have to pick up both to read the whole story.

Furthermore, pick up a copy of Dark Horse Presents #9 at your local comic shop for a special sneak peek at the highly anticipated series Alabaster: Wolves.

Praise for Caitlín R. Kiernan and Steve Lieber

“One of our essential writers of dark fiction . . . a cartographer of lost worlds.”—New York Times

“Lieber’s art is stunningly refined . . . This is how a comic book should look.”—Comic Book Resources

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dark Horse Comics announce a brand new three-part story from Steve Horton (DC Holiday Special, Superman 80-Page Giant) and Michael Dialynas (Popgun, Trinkets) appearing in Dark Horse Presents #9 — Amala’s Blade.

Amala was once chosen as a child to be the spiritual leader for her country, to unite the Purifiers and Modifiers and prevent war. She fled into the night. Twenty years of war later, she makes a living as an assassin, but her past is ever ready to catch up to her. Aboard a massive pirate ship, Amala stalks the fearsome pirate captain Cha’Kooh; but the voices in her head, manifesting as ghosts, keep getting in the way.

Amala’s Blade will be featured in issues #9, #10 & #11 of Dark Horse Presents.

“Amala’s Blade is the steam punk-with-swords epic that I’ve been dying to tell,” says Steve Horton, writer and letterer. “Thanks to the extraordinary and talented artist Michael Dialynas, we’ve brought Amala to life. Thanks to Dark Horse Comics, we’ve found an amazing and supportive publisher for our three-issue run in Dark Horse Presents.

This story has heart, sword fighting, sarcasm, revenge, pirates, technologically modified villains, a girl steam punk heroine, and a robotic pirate monkey. What more do you need?” says Horton.

In addition to work by renowned writers like Horton, Dark Horse Presents is renowned not only for publishing original work of comics luminaries but also for presenting powerful emerging voices of graphic fiction. Such is UXB by Colin Lorimer (Earp: Saints for Sinners), debuting in Dark Horse Presents #10.

In a shattered future postwar London, powerful experimental “life suits” that permanently graft to human bodies are created to counter the threat of terrorism. Given to three brothers, the suits could make the trio the saviors of mankind—if they can ever get past their obsessions for film, violent video games, and porn.

Following in the dark footsteps of dystopian visions such as The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, DMZ, and Give Me Liberty, Lorimer’s UXB is challenging, thought provoking, laced with gallows humor, and illustrated with consummate skill.

“I’m thrilled that UXB has found a home within the hallowed pages of DHP. The journey of UXB is going to be rather dark and twisted and there’s no better place for that story to be told than Dark Horse,” says Colin Lorimer.

While you wait for Dark Horse Presents #10, check out Colin’s work at UXBComic.com.

Dark Horse Presents #9 is out February 22, 2012 while #10 will be on sale March 21, 2012.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Caitlín R. Kiernan is the author of numerous works of dark fantasy and science fiction, including nine novels, several comic-book series (including Sandman spinoff The Dreaming), and over two hundred published short stories and novellas. Now, she brings her tales to the land of Dark Horse Comics.

Alabaster is based on Caitlín R. Kiernan’s fan-favorite Dancy Flammarion stories, a dark fantasy series centered around a female teenage protagonist of striking appearance and hidden, terrible depths. For nearly as long as she can remember, seventeen-year-old Dancy Flammarion has fought monsters, cutting a bloody swath through the demons and dark things of the world, aimed like a weapon by a merciless seraph, more taskmaster than guardian.

Part continuation, part reimagining, the series begins with Dancy making and breaking an oath in the name of her seraph, who subsequently abandons her. Injured and alone, Dancy has to find her own way for the first time in her life—and the wolves are closing in.

Alabaster will first appear in Dark Horse Presents #9 (on sale February 22, 2012), followed by the five-issue miniseries Alabaster: Wolves, which throws readers into Dancy’s world with a bang, strips away her seraph, and introduces the two characters who will become her long-term supporting cast. Alabaster: Wolves #1 is on sale April 11, 2012.

Alabaster features artwork by Eisner Award–nominated artist Steve Lieber and cover art by Greg Ruth.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Nate Cosby’s Buddy Cops has been announced by Dark Horse Comics for their #9 issue of Dark Horse Presents. The new story from Cosby is bound to throw some slaps and punches; Uranus, a galactic space protector demoted to the NYPD (for drinking) is teaming up with Tazer, a reprogrammed 1970s android that follows the exact letter of the law. They hate each other but they are the Buddy Cops.

This February, Nate Cosby (Pigs, Jim Henson’s The Storyteller), Evan Shaner (Jim Henson’s The Storyteller), and Rus Wooton (The Walking Dead) will bring the house down in an all-new story featured in Dark Horse Presents #9.

Monsters! Glowing swords! White boys rapping Wu-Tang lyrics — Fans couldn’t ask for more. Same is to be said about Tom Morello’s Orchid #1 which Dark Horse revealed has sold out of comic shops. Demand for Tom Morello’s epic dystopian fantasy has driven comic stores across the U.S. to a complete sell out of issue #1.

From the mind of musician Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, The Nightwatchman), with art by Scott Hepburn (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic), Orchid is the tale of a teenage prostitute who learns that she is more than the role society has imposed upon her.

Issue #1 started the tale; when the seas rose, genetic codes were smashed. Now, human settlements are ringed by a dense wilderness, from which ferocious new animal species prey on the helpless. The high ground belongs to the rich and powerful, who overlook swampland shantytowns from their fortresslike cities.

Iron-fisted rule ensures order and allows the wealthy to harvest the poor as slaves. Welcome to the world of Orchid. Look for news about an Orchid #1 reprint on the Dark Horse Blog, but in the meantime fans should head to their local comic shop and grab one of the final copies of #1 for only $1 before they’re gone for good.

Orchid #2 is on sale November 9th, 2011.

In Issue #2 — Orchid, along with her little brother and an unexpected ally named Simon, find themselves in unknown territory after they’re captured and sold by slave traders.

Headed toward the feared Fortress Penuel, Simon must mount an escape plan if he’s going to rescue his rebel comrades and return the mysterious and powerful mask of General China to its rightful owner–a saint believed to save the oppressed from the wicked Tomo Wolfe.
