The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The weight-loss industry in the United States is worth its share in billions of dollars. An impressive number, but unsurprising statistic, being that one in three Americans suffers from obesity. This is only the tip of the scale because the number does not account for all the ranges in between, from the overweight to the fad dieters who struggle with the same fifteen pounds. According to PRWeb.com, there are approximately 75 million dieters in the United States at any given time.

That’s a lot of people struggling with the same question. When did losing weight become so complicated? According to a recent New York Times article, two new studies have shown that exercise alone will not necessarily result in weight loss. Exercise cannot only be insignificantly effective in the fight against fat—it can actually lead to weight gain. Muscle weights more than fat.

Perhaps it’s a question of overestimating not only our workouts, but also ourselves. That euphoric feeling of satisfaction so brutally earned can lead us into thinking that, certainly, that second piece of cheesecake cannot be all that bad. We earned it.

What the studies showed is a fact easily forgotten amongst the Dukan diets and Insanity workouts that claim to resolve, but rarely keep in mind, the simplicity of weight loss: Weight loss is simple math. You only need to burn more calories than you consume: calories in, calories out. This may seem to oversimplify a daunting struggle, but it can be helpful to keep in mind and maintain realistic goals. You can work yourself to death, but if you are still eating more than you consume, then all that effort is moot. Exercise should not be used to compensate for past or future indulgences.

It turns out that contrary to popular belief, exercise can actually lower your metabolism. Our bodies can become accustomed to exercise. For example, you may be burning a large number of calories, but if your metabolism slows down, you may actually be burning less than you thought. You will lose fewer calories, rather than if your metabolism stayed the same.

What all of these findings best seem to illustrate is that moderation is key. Eating in moderation and exercising in moderation should eventually lead to weight loss. It may not be as fast as only drinking spicy lemonade for seven days, but it is far more effective and easier to stick to.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Miracles of God are never limited and can be discovered in the most eccentric of ways. Such is the case of the mystery healing of asthmatics in Hyderabad, a city in India. The weirdness is to an extent of absurdity whereby the patient is made to swallow a live sardine wrapped in a yellow herbal paste.

As funny as it sounds, it is a practice that has been followed for nearly a century now, by a single family named Goud. They are the only trustees of this medicine, and have not commercialized it nor given out the recipe of this secret elixir.

As legend goes, the medicine was gifted to the Gouds by a Hindu Saint about 170 years ago, and he had warned them that the treatment would lose its effectiveness if commercialized. Not just it, he also blessed a well around their area Doodhbowli, which is in a mile’s distance from historic monument, Charminar in Hyderabad. The Goud family use the water from that well to mix the medicine. Currently there are three Goud brothers performing the treatment, and they strictly to adhere to the practice of their ancestors. And still to date, the medicine and treatment is free of charge. There is an alternative to the fish, for thick-headed vegetarians, they can swallow a banana instead of the fish. However the Goud’s emphasize on the importance of fish. Since the therapy is based to a large extent on the effectiveness of the fish. As the live fish moves down, it opens up the pores in the windpipe blocked by phlegm or mucus, making way for the herbal paste.

The treatment is said to be very simple. After swallowing the live fish, the patient is given another three doses of a different medicine on three successive auspicious days called ‘Arudra Karthi,’ ‘Punarvasu Karthi’ and ‘Pushyami Karthi’, which fall every 15 days in a regulated span of 45 days. Along with this, the patient is also put on a strict diet for a period of 45 days which is said to be harder than swallowing the fish itself by some patients, abstaining from most edibles. Harinath Goud, one of the three Goud brothers says, “unless you strictly adhere to the diet, the effect of the medicine will not be optimum.”

Simultaneously every fortnight, morning and evening, two pills made out of the paste are to be taken without fail with warm water. The reason for the fortnightly gap is as much of a enigma as the medicine, and is religiously marked on every patient’s calendar. The patient’s life resumes to normal on the 46th day, but this is not the end of the treatment. The miracle also takes some time to show its success, and the Goud’s suggest that the fish medicine has to be taken for three consecutive years.

But does this treatment really work? Sheela Chakravorty, a patient who is satisfied with the results said: “The first time I took the fish, it was hard to follow the diet. I was tempted to eat, not delicacies, but simple things such as eggs and coffee, and maybe use a few spices that weren’t allowed. The next year, I was more relaxed and took it upon myself to follow it through. And I did. Today, I am 75 percent cured.”

Most patients notice an improvement in their state in the first year itself. However there isn’t any fixed pattern to recovery by this treatment. And then again there are a few people, who have shown no change, and the reason for this could be not strictly following the diet.

There is almost no scientific explanation for the cure. Yet thousands of asthmatics come to Hyderabad for this treatment both from India and other foreign countries to date to experiment this ‘wonder-therapy’ or like some say ‘God’s blessing,’ and many return eased off from this suffering of wheezing and severe breathing disorder.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

St. Louis, U.S.A. – Throughout grocery store aisles, shoppers find many soy-based choices to complete a nutritious diet. In April, Soyfoods Month, U.S. soybean farmers want to highlight the benefits of soy products and their availability in products that may not come to mind.

Jim Stillman, a soybean farmer from Emmetsburg, Iowa, and current vice chair for the United Soybean Board and soy checkoff, says he uses soy in his kitchen.

“Baking cookies or brownies, I use soy flour and soy oil,” says Stillman. “It’s just a matter of what you get used to, and I use soymilk in my cooking. I use everything I can that’s soy.”

Soy remains a popular choice for consumers looking for vegetable protein. But Stillman says you don’t have to replace meat in your diet to use soy. Soy can be used with meat instead of replacing it.

The Food and Drug Administration approved a claim that says 25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Stillman notes soy products provide a variety of choices to reach that goal.

“You take 25 grams of protein a day from soy protein, and you can get that in many forms: through milk, flour or even tofu,” adds Stillman. “That small amount makes a healthier, more beneficial meal and adds protein to anything you cook.”

The 69 farmer-directors of USB oversee the investments of the soy checkoff to maximize profit opportunities for all U.S. soybean farmers. These volunteers invest and leverage checkoff funds to increase the value of U.S. soy meal and oil, to ensure U.S. soybean farmers and their customers have the freedom and infrastructure to operate, and to meet the needs of U.S. soy’s customers.

As stipulated in the federal Soybean Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Act, the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service has oversight responsibilities for USB and the soy checkoff.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

A recent study run by scientists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada has confirmed a link between consumption of sugary foods (doughnuts, cakes, etc.) and fast food (French fries, hamburgers, pizza, etc.) and depression.

Published in the Public Health Nutrition journal, the study concludes that consumers who eat fast food and sugary foods, compared to those who eat little to none, are 51 percent more likely to develop depression. In addition, the results have shown that “the more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression,” according to Almudena Sánchez-Villegas, lead author of the study.

Participants in the study who ate great amounts of fast food and commercially baked goods were also revealed to have a greater chance of being single, less active, and have comparatively worse dietary habits, such as eating less nutritious foods like fruit, nuts, fish, vegetables, and olive oil. Other unhealthy characteristics of this group included smoking and working over 45 hours each week.

Those who do not consume commercially baked goods and fast food in large quantities are still at risk for developing mental illness. “Even eating small quantities is linked to a significantly higher chance of developing depression,” the university researcher from the Canary Islands noted.

The study sample consisted of some 8,964 participants that had no past history with either depression or mental illness and were members of the SUN Project (University of Navarra Diet and Lifestyle Tracking Program). They were studied for an average of 6 months, and 493 of them were diagnosed with depression or began to use antidepressants.

These new conclusions support the results of a previous SUN project from 2011, published in the PLoS One journal. The project recorded 657 new cases of depression out of the 12,059 people taking part in the study over the course of a little more than six months. A 42 percent increase in risks associated with fast food was noted, a finding lower than that found in the current study.

Sánchez-Villegas says, “Although more studies are necessary, the intake of this type of food should be controlled because of its implications on both health (obesity, cardiovascular diseases) and mental well-being.”

Over 120 million people suffer from depression worldwide, meaning it is one of the leading causes of disability across the globe. Furthermore, in countries with low and medium incomes, it is the most common cause. There is little information, however, about what role diet plays in developing different forms of depression.

Studies from the past have suggested that certain nutrients have a preventative role, such as B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and olive oil. Healthy diets, such as those common in the Mediterranean, have been linked to lower risks in developing depression.

While the exact link between fast food and sugary foods and depression is not yet known, the study will hopefully pave the way for other experiments revealing the exact causes that link bad diets and depression.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Adults aren’t the only ones who should be thinking heart smart this February, as heart disease is a concern for an increasing number of children too. Research shows that overweight kids are more likely to develop heart disease as adults. And many overweight children already have conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which puts them at risk for heart disease now.

The good news is that most kids can address these risks with changes in diet and exercise. Throughout February, which is American Heart Month, BeSmartBeWell.com highlights the heart risks facing overweight kids and provides advice for how to manage them.

At BeSmartBeWell.com, real-life kids, like Maya, share their stories. Maya was only 5 years old when her family learned she had dangerously high triglycerides. Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood; having too much increases the risk for heart disease. By making changes to her diet and encouraging her to be active, Maya’s family helped her lower her triglycerides and improve her heart health.

“Fatness hurts your heart. If your heart is hurt, you won’t live that long,” says Maya in a video on the site. “I don’t want to be unhealthy and I’d rather have this diet than get those high triglycerides again.”

The alarming numbers

According to the American Heart Association, an estimated one out of every three kids in the United States is overweight or obese. It’s not that hard to understand how they got there. Kids can be picky eaters. Like most kids her age, Maya preferred pizza and chicken nuggets to fruits and vegetables, and her parents didn’t realize the health risks of this kind of diet.

But the consequences of an unhealthy diet can be significant. A recent study published in the journal Obesity showed that overweight kids are more likely to have high cholesterol, which is associated with higher heart-disease risk in adulthood.

“Type 2 diabetes, high triglycerides, high cholesterol–these used to be considered old people problems and we are seeing them in little kids,” says David Thoele, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist and one of the experts featured on BeSmartBeWell.com.

What can I do about it?

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

It’s a new year, and many Americans are dieting with new resolve. To help them, U.S. News & World Report has released its second annual Best Diets rankings. The centerpiece of Best Diets 2012 is U.S. News’s first-ever ranking of Easiest Diets to Follow. Dieters who choose a diet at or near the top of this list are more likely to succeed in staying on their diet for the long haul.

Any diet can promise weight loss, but it’s those that dieters can stick with all year — and year after year — that prove successful. Of the 25 diets evaluated, the five Easiest Diets to Follow are: (#1) Weight Watchers, (#2) Jenny Craig, (#3) Mediterranean Diet, and (tied at #4) Slim-Fast and Volumetrics.

Best Diets 2012 features six other rankings: Best Diets Overall, Best Commercial Diet Plans, Best Weight-Loss Diets, Best Diets for Healthy Eating, Best Diabetes Diets, and Best Heart-Healthy Diets. All six rankings were first published in 2011, when U.S. News evaluated a total of 20 diets. The five new diets added for 2012 are the Abs Diet, Biggest Loser Diet, Dukan Diet, Flat Belly Diet, and Macrobiotic Diet.

Big winners across the rankings included:

DASH Diet: ranked #1 in Best Diets Overall, Best Diets for Healthy Eating, and Best Diabetes Diets (tie)

Weight Watchers: ranked #1 in Best Weight-Loss Diets, Best Commercial Diet Plans, and Easiest Diets to Follow

Biggest Loser Diet: ranked #1 in Best Diabetes Diets (tie)

Ornish Diet: ranked #1 in Best Heart-Healthy Diets

“The Best Diets rankings are designed to guide each dieter to the diet or diets best suited to his or her goal, whether that’s weight loss, management of diabetes, healthy eating, or something else,” said U.S. News’s Lindsay Lyon, who directed the project. To create the rankings, U.S. News profiled each diet using information culled from scientific journals, government reports, and other resources. Profiles describe how a given diet works, how it breaks down nutritionally, how safe it is, and more.

A volunteer panel of 22 nationally recognized experts in diet and nutrition reviewed each profile, conducted independent fact-finding, and rated the diets on seven criteria, such as their ability to produce short-term and long-term weight loss. U.S. News converted panelists’ ratings to scores and constructed the rankings.

For the Easiest Diets to Follow list, panelists assessed likely taste appeal, ease of initial adjustment, ability to keep dieters from feeling hungry, and special eating restrictions. U.S. News turned to the same 22 experts for Best Diets 2012 as it did for Best Diets 2011. “I can’t say enough about their commitment and hard work,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “They enabled us to provide meaningful, evidence-based rankings.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Draft guidance aimed to address the historic underrepresentation of women in clinical studies was issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on December 16.

Intended for medical device developers and manufacturers, the guidance outlines agency recommendations for designing and conducting device clinical studies that may enhance the enrollment of women in such studies, if appropriate.

“The FDA recommends that investigators and manufacturers strive to enroll representative proportions of both women and men in their device studies,” said Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Our draft guidance outlines what we recommend for obtaining and improving the quality and consistency of sex-specific data on devices.”

Certain medical products may elicit different responses in women than in men. This may be due in part to basic differences in men and women, including genetics, hormones, body size, diet, and sociocultural issues. In addition, certain variables associated with women, such as size or certain illnesses, may be responsible for certain differences between men and women in the safety and effectiveness of medical devices.

A 2001 report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on FDA-reviewed drug studies found that while women represented 52 percent of study enrollees, 30 percent of study documents did not report outcomes by sex and nearly 40 percent did not report enrollment demographics.

A 2009 study of cardiovascular device pre-market applications showed that pivotal studies that reported sex enrolled an average of 33.9 percent women. The draft guidance addresses study and evaluation of sex differences, data analysis and reporting in both pre- and post-market device clinical studies.

In addition, it covers issues regarding statistical analyses of sex differences and how to report sex-specific information in summaries and labeling for approved devices. Devices intended for single-sex use, of course, would not be expected to address potential sex differences.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The invention of the steam engine at the end of the 18th century was the beginning of evolution in transportation. This development allowed people to move heavier loads faster. A hundred years after, since the motor car was created, people were able to travel long distances without using a lot of effort.

By the end of 20th century, and continuing today, he computer is the main source of communication for the vast majority of people in the world. In last 10 years, the average growth of Internet usage in the world grew by 480 percent. This increase shows that people are becoming more addicted to online communication, and the need to physically interact with people has become limited.

The absence of the necessity to walk and do other physical activities in order to complete daily tasks is one of the leading causes of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century: obesity. Obesity is defined as a body having excessive body fat, which causes health problem and reduces the life expectancy of a person.

Moreover, it increases the probability of having various diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Obesity is caused by many factors. One reason could be the person’s genes, which usually explains 25-40 percent of a person’s weight. The remaining percentage of your body condition comes from that person’s culture, way of life, and environment.

With the development of technology and transportation, the cost of goods has decreased, and most people are able to afford junk food, which is sold everywhere. Moreover, there is no need to go to the grocery stores as often since fast food services, such as pizza deliveries, are readily available. Such services are becoming more popular, especially among the younger generation.

The problem of obesity is more global than we think. It was estimated that Americans spend more than $33 billion annually on weight loss. Additionally, the cost of health care to treat obesity is $120 billion. The World Health Organization predicts that there will be 2.3 billion people with weight problems by 2015, which is almost a quarter of the world’s population. At the present, nearly a third the US population is obese.

How people should deal with obesity problem?

First of all, a person who is obese must understand his/her own problem and consciously decide to deal with that issue. It was recommended to use a positive criticism in order to build self-confidence, which means that criticism must be seen as a way to correct oneself, but not as an irritating factor.

As soon as an obese person is certain about his/her situation, a balanced diet must be chosen. When the goal is to lose weight by decreasing the amount of food, the body should still get all essential nutritients, since it is vital for physical health and appearance. In addition, it is important to have a habit of counting calories.

Whenever food is bought, all the labels must be read to know how many calories the product contains. If extra calories were consumed, exercise can help balance it. In conclusion, it is necessary to avoid ignoring small things. If you already decided to have a diet and be healthy, it should last for as long as possible, and must not depend on any events, such as wedding or birthday party.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

A survey published by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has studied the relation between mortality and the intake of sodium and potassium using a nationally representative. The study reveals that U.S. adults’ health is at risk.

According to it, a diet high in potassium and low in sodium reduces risk of death by a 50 percent. U.S. adults consume and average of 3,300 milligrams of sodium, more than twice the current recommended limit for most Americans. The results of the study show that a change in Americans’ diet is necessary to lower health risk.

The research was designed along with researchers from Emory University and Harvard University to assess the health and nutritional status of adults in the United States. As a result, findings show that people who reduce their sodium intake and increase their potassium consumption improved blood pressure and reduce risk for developing other serious health problems.

Elena Kuklina, M.D., Ph.D., an investigator on the study and a nutritional epidemiologist with the CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention said “the study provides further evidence to support current public health recommendations to reduce sodium levels in processed foods, given that nearly 80 percent of people’s sodium intake comes from packaged and restaurant foods. Increasing potassium intake may have additional health benefits.”

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that people choose more potassium-rich foods, advising 4,700 milligrams of potassium per day. The guide also suggests that healthy adults should limit sodium intake to 2,300 mg per day while individuals with high blood pressure should consume no more than 1,500 mg per day. For example table salt is 40 percent sodium; one teaspoon of table salt contains 2,300 mg of sodium.

Potassium, along with calcium and sodium, is an electrolyte important to the human nervous system, muscle function, fluid balance and heart, kidney and adrenal functions. However unlike sodium, potassium is naturally present in many fresh foods such as milk, vegetables and yogurt. Processed meats, such as bacon, sausage, and ham and canned soups and vegetables are all examples of foods that contain added sodium. Fast food is generally very high in sodium.

Nutritionists recommend choosing smaller-sized servings. Consider splitting fast food meals to reduce the amount of calories and fat by asking for a “doggy bag” or simply leaving the excess on the plate. To help supplement and balance a fast food meal, choose nutritious options such as fresh fruits, vegetables and yogurt available as sides.

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet advises eating more potassium and less sodium. It is recommended by the National Institutes of Health, which reminds people that variety and moderation are the key principles in providing a healthy diet for children as well as adults.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Victoria’s Secret is world-renowned as an American retailer for women’s wear, lingerie and beauty products. It is not only known for its annual fashion show but also famed for its catalogues which feature top fashion models in stylish photo shoots. Victoria’s Secret’s trademark is not only slim and beautiful models, but they also want their models to be nourished and healthy. In this day and age, we find that a lot of pressure is put on women to lose weight and constantly aim to look like the models portrayed in the media.

Recently, one of the models for Victoria’s Secret, named Candice Swanepoel, has become “a little to light for her wings” according to E online. The model was formerly known for her long blond locks and voluptuous body.

Just a few months ago, Candice was the face of the lingerie house’s Valentine’s Day campaign. She sported a much healthier body than she does now, her weight loss having been drastic. According to sources, she is not only considered unhealthy but is jeopardizing her career as a model for Victoria’s Secret. All the Angels are supposed to be “healthy and muscular” says a source and until now, Swanepoel, 22, had kept the contract. The company is clearly drawing a line between skinny and undernourished models.

An insider explains how “there is a really clear criteria for both Angels and the catalogue. Their career path is Sports Illustrates swimsuit issue then to Angel; it’s the highest paying contract there is, period. The image is about being voluptuous, its not fat, buts its curvy”. For a professional such as Swanepoel, this means that if she gets to skinny, she could lose her contract. The company is not looking for “skinny and editorial print-like fashion magazine models” according to entertainment online. One of the company’s target groups is the Macy’s shoppers and they are generally of an older age-group.

Swanepoel says to E online how extensive traveling has been the main cause of her weight loss. Diet expert Rochelle Sirota describes how “she has to go up to 125 pounds, she looks about 108 to 110 right now, and she’s 5-foot-9 and a half”. She describes how just a few months ago, Candice looked much sturdier. At the moment, the model’s level of body fat looks really low. The diet expert also describes how the human body has the ability to lose weight due to extreme stress, especially in connection with changing time zones. Combined with a fast metabolism, which Swanepoel claims she has, this could be a valid reason for her weight loss.

Rochelle Sirota explains how Swanepoel would have to eat “500 extra calories a day and maintain the exercise she’s doing now to gain a pound a week back onto her frame” according to E online.

Jessica White, a current Victoria’s Secret model, describes how her manager has urged her to keep healthy and maintain a normal weight. She describes how “I’m a Victoria’s Secret model and they have never encouraged me to be anythingbut sexy and healthy, I have curves and they love that. Victoria’s Secret represents all women, which means all shapes and sizes”.

A person close to Swanepoel has said that the focus on her weight is ‘overblown’.
