Toonari Post is proud to report from the International Cibeles Fashion Week in Madrid. To give a panoramic view of this amazing event, let’s look at how this fashion week works.

Madrid’s Fashion Week is divided into five days, all of them featuring more than eight daily runway shows, presenting the newest collections of the season.

Famous hosts, special guests and fashion lovers get together in IFEMA, the international fair hall, in order to enjoy this wonderful and lovely fashion party.

It also boasts free areas where young designers feature, and sell, their lines to anyone interested in a unique sample of their work. In this section, called ‘EGO’, you would probably find irresistible pieces at good prices if you  want a unique item from a fashion diamond-in-the-rough.

This year saw incredible looks, not only featuring work of designers, but also from their assistants who showed their fierce style.

Day by day, style by style

On September 16, Roberto Verino, Jesus del Pozo, Andres Sardá, Duyos, Adolfo Dominguez, Victorio & Lucchino and Angel Schleser were the first designers to show their work to public critics.

Jesus del Pozo was one of the most anticipated designers due to the recent death of his brand’s chairman.

The next day,  September 17, Teresa Hebig, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Roberto Torretta, David Delfin, Francis Montesinos, Devota & Lomba, Hannibal Laguna and Kina Fernandez were featuring all kind of designs, truly different and particular from one another. But they all reached the necessary amount of causal flair needed to be part of this five day event.

On September 18, Toonari Post watched the Lemoniez runway, featuring an incredible sample of earthy textures, over-knees cuts and colorful prints. Sober but ‘structural’ and continuously innovating.

Next up, audiences enjoyed AA de Amaya Arzuaga. Filled to the brim with soft textures, silk and colors from an orangey-red palate palette, the collection was a complete success. Sexy, grunge, but also delicate and feminine. They will be sure  must-have’s for Spanish fashionistas.

Juanjo Oliva

This was the most anticipated collection – Juanjo Oliva showed us how to create movement with ‘tejidos‘ textiles and he worked closely in the lines of pastel colors highlighting salmon and light blue. Black and white were also present with golden touches, and by dressing his models in capes, this designer banked the applause of a captivated audience.

Oliva received the L’oreal award for his work, something that was secured by the beautiful pieces he presented on the runway. He is a designer who deserved what he got. And we will definitely keep track of him.

Ana Locking was the closing act. Really colorful, romantic yet sexy thanks to low neck lines with a touch of frivolous nature. She also explored the layering of textiles and asymmetric tailoring on several models.

On September 19, audiences witnessed some incredible work: Sita Murt showed off soft-minimalism with natural materials such as extra-fine cotton and silk.

TCN was a disappointment, not far from a collection at Primark. But on the plus side, it demonstrated a teen style by mixing soft colors intertwined with lace.

The joint show by Maria Escote and Carlos Diez aroused a huge amount of anticipation from a packed audience. Very different from one another but equally brilliant. Maria Escote opted for a lot of transparency, black and white tones, together with shirts displaying frills and opaque prints. Carlos Diez´s transgressive line aroused plenty of curiosity, printed with lips and with lots of skin. Simply magnificent.

Juana Martín & Sara Coleman presented two lines notable for their black and white tones and golden touches. The final runway was dedicated to the ever magnificent Guillermina Baeza & Dolores Cortés who made a tremendously sexy interpretation of bathing suits filled with color and flower prints.

The final day was the EGO day — an exclusive day for young designers to showcase how they understand fashion. Alba Cardalda, Maria Ke Fisherman, Shen Lin, Beba’s Closet, Moisés Nieto, Ibai Labega, Luis Manteiga, Alberto Puras, Ixone Elzo and Etxeberria featured their collections, as different as colors, but still unique.

Most of them are graduates from IED (Insituto Europeo di Design) and presented really innovated concepts of fashion.

Burger King betting for young designers

This year, Burger King offered a huge opportunity for one of the youngest designers of the EGO section. The award represents an important marketing path to the winner’s brand in London, increasing sales and giving the line a chance of realization as a label.

The winner was Roberto Piqueras, who mixed sporty elements filled with humor and irony.

Fashion will always survive

Despite the global economic crisis it will not break years of work and development in fashion. What for some represents a superfluous spend, for others it’s a way of living. Fashion will be there to those who understand it as art, wearable art, for those who live on the idea that art becomes reality once it’s off their ateliers.
