The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Michelle Williams continues to expand her brand and make a name for herself in the entertainment industry with a new reality series, My Sister’s Keeper. Produced and distributed by Entertainment One (eOne), the series will follow Williams’ journey of writing and recording her third Gospel album, and other aspects of her life.

“I am very thrilled about this opportunity, to extend into television with the eOne family as well, with this series,” she said in a release.

“Working together on my new gospel album and television series, I am excited to share with everyone a behind-the-scenes look at the inspiration and journey of recording for the album, performing, fun family times and other unforgettable experiences out together with my dear sisters.”

One of those sisters sang alongside Williams in a gospel group, United Harmony. Destiny’s Child fans may remember a mini reunion that Williams had during an interview with Ananda Lewis on MTV’s TRL. Fans will have to watch the show to see what musical surprises, if any, the Williams sisters may be cooking up.

“We’re very excited to expand upon our relationship with Michelle on this new collaboration that will provide fans with a peek into her everyday life,” said Tara Long, Senior Vice President of U.S. Alternative Programming.

“eOne’s versatility across all pillars of entertainment from music, film and television through development, production and distribution enables us to offer comprehensive multi-platform opportunities for our partners.”

Williams’ career in entertainment spawns more than a decade. She got her start as a background singer for R&B singer Monica in 1999 and joined Destiny’s Child in 2000. Alongside Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland, Williams traveled the globe, selling out shows and collecting major music awards. In 2002, however, she branched out and forged a solo career.

On April 16, 2002 Williams released Heart to Yours via Sanctuary Records and Columbia Records. The album was well received by critics and performed marginally well on the music charts. Do You Know followed in 2004 and featured appearances by former band mates Knowles and Rowland. Knowles and younger sister Solange also wrote and produced on the album. Again, the album received positive reviews. The album did not perform as well as its predecessor though. In 2008 Williams ventured from gospel music and issued a dance/pop album titled Unexpected. The album was a commercial disappointment. It is Williams’ lowest selling album to date.

In 2003 Williams made her Broadway debut in Aida, replacing Grammy-winning singer Toni Braxton in the lead role. The year 2007 saw Williams star in Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple, followed by a ground breaking, historical portrayal as Roxie Hart in Chicago in 2009. Williams is the first woman of color to take on the lead role. In 2011, Williams made a brief departure from the Broadway stage to act in a David E. Talbert play, What My Husband Doesn’t Know. Broadway fans saw Williams return to them in 2013 with a role in Fela!

In addition to being a singer, songwriter and actress, Williams is also a philanthropist, designer and a minority owner of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Everything is ready. Champagne, trays with Spanish jam, a group of 10 young waiters in uniform and everyone ready to serve the guests. In the entrance, some paper photographs, in which we can make out the name Marie Claire, are waiting to receive the public. Once we have crossed the hall and we go up the stairs coming up to an amazing 2009 David Delfin’s dress, we find at the end of the corridor another perfect dress, a 2010 black Hannibal Laguna’s model with red flowers. On the right, two little lounges.

On the first one, the table with glasses; on the second one, a photocall. Where are we? We are at Cerralbo Museum, where we are celebrating the opening of “Fashion is a dream,” a unique exposition which commemorates the most admired Spanish fashion designer’s 25 years work. The exhibition remembers the work of several generations, since Balenciaga and Pertegaz, to Victorio & Lucchino, Hannibal Laguna and Miguel Palacio. The most of them, were at the opening party last week, and Toonari Post was there to catch the moment of exaltation and enjoyment of Spanish fashion.

Famous people were arriving. Daniel Rabaneda and Hannibal Laguna, some of the first famous in posing on the photocall. After Ágatha follow Amaya Arzuaga, Purificación García, Juanjo Oliva, and many other important figures, everyone answering media questions.

“I still have the same illusion and passion that I had 30 years ago and I think that this is very important in design,” Purificación García said, satisfied with the exposition. “I don’t like talking about crisis, I prefer to talk about changes. I believe that designers have to be more involved, to risk and to insist more on quality-price ratio.”

Some value the importance of the event as the commemoration of 25 years of work, others, the originality of the scenario, and the most of them, the organization and procedure of the exposition, as it is the case of Juanjo Oliva: “It is very well organized. It is a real context, not present, but the museum is a good company, very pleasant.”

Everyone seemed to have fun and enjoy this unusual scenario, a 19th century palace-museum in the middle of Madrid, and among those present we found to Lourdes Vaquero, museum Cerralbo’s director, to whom we directed some questions about this initiative. “The idea is to emulate parties which were celebrated in 19th century…we wanted that every dress fit with pieces of each room,” Vaquero said. “We have an extraordinary potential in fashion, we have to boost Spanish brand through our designers. In the 16th century Spain was the country that set trends in all Europe, and we have to achieve that Spain set trends again”.

The night was full of fashion and glamour, showed for example in a elegant Sybilla dress which prevails on the dance hall as the symbol of this exhibition, and led the way to an exposition that will be open to public in the Museo Cerralbo of Madrid until January 13 to every fashion lover.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In her verse for Drake’s “Make Me Proud,” Nicki Minaj boasted: “The best legal team, so the deals is ill/It’s M.A.C., OPI and a fragrance, too/Apparel, I’m dominating every avenue.” Well, the animated hip-hop artist certainly wasn’t making those proclamations for her own health. Minaj is quickly becoming a beauty industry powerhouse.

On November 26, 2010, Minaj released her first M.A.C. lipstick in the shade Pink Friday, to coincide with the release of her debut album, also titled “Pink Friday.” She later released another lipstick, Viva Glam Nicki, as a part of M.A.C’s Viva Glam 2012 Campaign. Viva Glam is a line of lipsticks created to raise funds assisting men, women and children living with AIDS. Since its inception, the M.A.C. AIDS Fund has raised more than $200 million for their cause.

Nicki then released her OPI collection at the beginning of 2012. The collection was made up of a total of six polishes—three cream polishes, two glitter polishes and one shatter polish. The polishes were named after Nicki’s album and song titles. Pink Friday is in Nicki’s favorite color, Did It On ‘Em is a lovely shade of chartreuse, Fly is teal, Metallic 4 Life features a black base color with silver flecks of glitter, Save Me features a clear base color with blue glitter and the Super Bass Shatter is a darker shade of pink than Pink Friday, and also has glitter in it.

Most recently, Minaj released the advertisements for her fragrance, Pink Friday. Last month when she first released the official images of the bottle, which is a smaller version of her dipped in gold and wearing a white bustier, she described the smell of the fragrance as “angels playing.” It has since been noted that the fragrance will smell like a mixture of creamy vanilla, juicy fruits and sensual musk.

So, what’s next on Queen Minaj’s to-do list? A clothing line, of course! Minaj has always been able to generate much conversation and debate regarding her fashion choices. While fashion critics may not understand her style, the Barbz love it. Since it is the opinion of the Barbz, and the Barz only, that matter, it is quite befitting that Minaj would give them a collection made in her likeness. Of the brand Nicki has stated that her “biggest goal was to make a line that was going to be affordable to my fans and also rich enough in quality that they’ll feel like they’re wearing exactly what I’m wearing.” All of the Barbz, male and female, will be catered to with this “Harajuku Barbie” collection.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

When one thinks of fashion, several names come to mind. Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, John Galliano, Nina Garcia, Rachel Zoe, June Ambrose and Andre Leon Talley are a few. How about the name Gwenolyn Stephens? Well, for those who are not familiar with the name, don’t fret. Ms. Stephens has set out on a mission to change that.

Gwenolyn Stephens hails from rural Mississippi and has had a lifelong obsession with fashion. Inspired by her mother, who was “always dressed to impress and always had on a pair of heels,” Stephens has created Rock.Paper.Heels., a boutique located in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Rock.Paper.Heels is “the basis of every woman.” The rock represents diamonds, a girl’s best friend, while paper represents money and heels are an accessory that all women love.

Though she is not formally educated in the field of fashion, Stephens has worked extensively in retail and has studied fashion in her own right—presumably with the aid of her favorite fashion publications, Elle and Vogue. One might expect her to feel inferior to those who hold degrees from world famous fashion institutions; however, she does not. She says that although “[my] creditability may be questioned [at times], that gives me the opportunity to show what I am capable of.”

Another issue that many may consider a hindrance to Stephen’s brand is her location. Needless to say, no one considers Mississippi one of the fashion capitals of the world. Still, she will not be deterred from pursuing her dreams on her own terms. “When you’re good at what you do and stay true to yourself, no good deed goes unnoticed,” she says. “No matter where you are from, you will have the ability to shine and make a positive impact in the lives of others.”

In addition to the physical location in Mississippi, Rock.Paper.Heels also has an online boutique. There are a number of things that separate this boutique from others. For starters, Stephens and her staff offer customers a variety of styles. The online store is geared more towards lovers of the urban genre, whereas the physical location offers more sophisticated pieces.

The company also offers customization. They have partnered with a Japan-based designer to customize pieces and hope to expand into national and global markets. The final component that separates this brand from the various others is personal styling. “I have yet to see a boutique that offers styling tips to their customers which includes hair, makeup and accessories,” Stephens states. “We offer the complete package, not just the garment.” Stephens is dedicated to giving her customers all of the necessary tools in order to feel comfortable and confident with their image.

Furthering her efforts to improve the image of her customers, Stephens seeks to open a consultation firm which will be an extension of Rock.Paper.Heels. She acknowledges that image is everything and that it is important to look your best at all times whether one is going on a job interview, first date or to a social gathering. Of course, Stephens has far bigger dreams than styling the everyday Mississippi woman and those dreams could be summed up in two words: Solange Knowles.

“She does everything so effortlessly,” she states of her dream client who she lists as a fashion icon alongside Rihanna, Audrey Hepburn and David Bowie. “She does not follow ‘fashion rules’ and she steps outside the box which is what I love about her. She is a style chameleon.”

Stephens is passionate about her brand and hopes that others will be able to identify and connect with what she is offering to the fashion community. Rock.Paper.Heels opened on September 1, 2012 and is located at 103 West Washington Street, Suite B4 in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Gwenolyn Stephens may be contacted via telephone at (601) 427-5472 or rockpaperheels@gmail.com.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, UK – Maxi and Art Deco Dresses show Romance is not dead at New Look this spring and summer. Last autumn, fashion fell in love with romantic lace; from the feminine and pretty day dresses, to more dramatic sweeping see-through gowns.

This season, spring fashion continues to embrace the feminine in other forms, with romantic ranges of dresses that capture the sunshine season ahead. The maxi-dress, rarely out of fashion, returns in bold and floral print to stand out under the sun. Flattering in silhouette and an easy way to show off the season’s love of patterned and flower print, the maxi dress encompasses everything that is beautiful about spring.

New Look, the high street fashion leaders in trend-setting styles, has long pioneered the value of the Maxi dress frequently lauding it as an essential item for spring and summer. Their current collection showcases dresses that make Romantic Heroines of us all. Their vintage rose print maxi dress and floral border maxi dress show the power of the flower print this season. Teamed with a pair of decadently dangling gold colored chain cascade earrings, the maxi dress becomes regal and perfect for parties, complemented by spring’s latest ‘up-do’.

One can opt for maxi dresses in pleated, patterned and block-colored forms, illustrating how many ways there are to wear this perfect item.

The Art Deco trend was another familiar force on the catwalk during the 2012 season, with more romantic draping silhouettes bejewelled and shimmering. Miss Sixty, carefully selected by New Look for their cutting edge designs, offer a range of party dresses that offer romance with a slighter shorter hemline. Their black Bow Dress is elegantly feminine, with a 20s Art Deco echo that feels very current and topical.

Spring is the season to dress in feminine fashion and make like a Romantic Heroine. New Look’s sweeping floral and patterned styles will inject every wardrobe with a little budding romance.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

London, UK – Dorothy Perkins has revealed the launch of a new collection entitled ‘A Postcard From’ by London-based designer Olivia Rubin. The collection will appear exclusively in Dorothy Perkins’ top 25 stores and online.

‘A Postcard From’ is inspired by Olivia’s memories of her travels and aims to evoke a mood of summer fun. The new collection will include dresses, tops, swimwear and accessories, all featuring Olivia’s signature prints. In addition to its bright pink shades, the collection’s colour palette includes neutral tones of grey and pastels. With these soft colours expected to make a big splash in SS12, the collection represents a fresh, young point of view that’s very much on-trend.

Known for her distinctive prints, Olivia brings her signature patterning to the collection. It includes an array of jersey with blush-coloured shells, bikinis and beach bags with bold coral designs and chiffon maxi dresses with tropical bird prints.

Olivia’s collection also features many of her signature silhouettes, which have been seen on a range of popular female celebrities in recent years. The collection is aimed to flatter every woman, with sizes ranging from 8 to 18.

The collection is also an opportunity for fans of Olivia to wear her looks at affordable, high street prices. The accessibility of the range and the inclusion of versatile accessories is what has excited Olivia most about the collection.

Olivia commented on her collection: “I’m so excited to be working with Dorothy Perkins and to bring my designs to the high street. The collection focuses on strong yet simple silhouettes, as I always design feminine shapes with an original take, in order to create a versatile piece that can become a wardrobe staple. Also I have introduced jewelry and swimwear to the range, which will be the first time I have added accessories to one of my collections.”

The Olivia Rubin London for Dorothy Perkins collection will be available online at http://www.dorothyperkins.com. It will also be available in the following UK stores from the end of April 2012.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Romanian model Ioana Spangenberg recently become known for having an unusually small natural waist, measuring only 20 inches. Although the model claims she eats a lot, her body is not allowing her to put on weight. Pictures of her delicate body posted around the web seem to be the outcome of excessive photo editing and rarely taken at face value.

“Every day I eat three big meals and I snack on chocolate and crisps all the time. No one seems to believe that,” confessed the model to British tabloid The Sun.

Her regular diet is neither fatty nor extremely healthy. It consists daily of toast with jam or eggs for breakfast, in-between snacking such as chocolate or crisps, sausages, chicken or potatoes for lunch and finally for dinner, bread with meat or cheese. She admits that when she was a teenager her waist was only 15 inches and nowadays her waist is only five inches larger than a CD.

With a body mass of just 13.6 she is severely underweight according to the health range (from 18.5 to 24.9 BMI). At the Daily Mail, the nutritionist Helen Money explains that: ‘The diet she described contains foods that are very low in essential vitamins and minerals which together with her low body weight suggests that she must be very malnourished.” According to Money it is surprising the model has energy to work because with her weight and diet, she would expect her to be hospitalized.

Fashion has changed over the years and equally so has the concept of sex symbols. We used to have voluptuous stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Ava Garner, Elizabeth Taylor or Bettie Page. Sources on the web shows that in 1960, the average fashion models were about 1.7m and weighed approximately 129 pounds (58.51 kg).

Today, the average model is two inches taller and weight about 114 pounds (51.7 kg). In comparison, the former beauty ideal was forgiven in terms of curves, sizeable hips and waist. It was sexy to have a healthy-looking body but the ‘skinner’ trend began with the famous British model named Twiggy became an ‘it’-girl, leading the change with a weight of only 91 pounds.

A culture obsessed with being thin nowadays makes especially women believe that becoming thin equals beauty. Studies show that women tend to respond more positively to products advertised on skinnier fashion models. The emphasis on these products has been blamed for the continuous prevalence of eating disorders.

The causes of eating disorders are usually very complex but often linked to general understanding, or misunderstandings, of self-worth. Most sufferers of anorexia, bulimia or compulsive over-eating are women, but nowadays the number of affected men is increasing. Anorexia, which involves depriving the body of food, is more common in young people. Bulimia, characterized by a cycle of starving and bingeing is more likely in adults.

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders:

Almost 50% of people with eating disorders meet the criteria for depression.

Only 1 in 10 men and women with eating disorders receive treatment.

Only 35% of people that receive treatment for eating disorders get treatment at a specialized facility for eating disorders.

Up to 24 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder) in the U.S.

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.

However, Ioana has not always been happy with her body. She understands that her body is not compatible with the vast majority of women because no designer is going to use her for real clothes lines.

According to Ioana, she was never actively trying to get skinny. In her hometown, being overweight is traditionally seen as a sign that you are from a wealthy family. Because of her body, she shied away from an active social life in order to stay at home and work on gaining weight.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Levi’s brand launched its first ever global collection during New York Fashion Week at SoHo’s landmark Mercer 82 event space on February 15, 2012 afternoon. During the event— a hybrid between custom-made vignettes featuring pinnacle products from the line and a runway show— the Levi’s brand showcased the key looks from its Fall/Winter 2012 collection.

“Levi’s has always been about embracing the energy and events of our time. Today, fashion is more democratic and accessible than ever, making New York Fashion Week the perfect moment in time for the Levi’s brand to launch our first global collection,” said Len Peltier, Global Vice President of Creative Direction.

The Levi’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection is based on a more refined and tailored look, for both men and women. The designs were inspired by the idea of craftsmanship, honesty and authenticity – honoring tradition while defying convention, redefining the norm and re-crafting and re-creating iconic Levi’s styles.

The Presentation

The Levi’s presentation at New York Fashion Week was inspired by the ritual of “getting dressed.” The ritual of dressing for the task ahead is as old as humanity, and it is something that Levi’s has always intuitively understood.

Levi’s jeans found their original market among hardworking miners and pioneers who were carving a new nation. Levi’s products are still the first choice for modern pioneers: the artists, musicians, entrepreneurs and activists who are all working to realize their own, unique vision of the future. What they choose to wear every day is a display of how they want to carry themselves and their ambitions forward.

Through a series of vignettes, taking the form of sculptural installations and representing the consumer’s personal space, lifestyle and style, guests were guided through an art gallery-like space in which key looks from the collection were showcased. This was followed by a runway show showcasing the entire collection.

The Collection

Steeped in the authenticity and craftsmanship that the brand is known for, the collection is built around classic and refined styles with sharp clean aesthetics, which have been tailored to perfection.

The key trend for men this season is the tapered look, for a great flattering fit that sits just below the waist, is slouchy on the top and has a slim tailored leg.

For women, the key look for the season is the Bootcut Skinny, which the Levi’s brand has completely reinvented. No longer your mother’s bootcut denim, this season will see the launch of this new take on a classic – a sexy, modern skinny fit making you forever think differently about the bootcut.

As part of Levi Strauss & Co.’s profits through principles approach, sustainability is embedded throughout the collection with the use of Water<Less techniques and sustainable finishes playing a prominent role this season.

After previewing her Autumn / Winter 2012 collection to a packed house at the New York Library on Sunday morning 12th February, and with her husband David Beckham OBE, editor in Chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour OBE, and her long time business partner Simon Fuller [http://www.xixentertainment.com], all looking on from the front row, the critics were unanimous in voting this the finest moment of her career as a fashion designer.

“Her strongest show yet” The Guardian

“In her insistence on developing slowly, and gradually earning respect, Mrs. Beckham has scarcely put a platformed-foot wrong” VOGUE.com

“Queen Victoria: How Mrs Beckham conquered fashion” The Guardian

“Her style is, season after season, more and more desirable and confident” Vogue Italy

“She has staked her claim and she owns this space” FT

With her ready to wear collection now stocked in over 300 retail outlets around the world, the Victoria Beckham business is now worth in excess of GBP30 million at retail, and with a launch of a new line, named ‘Victoria by Victoria Beckham’ going on sale this week, that value is only set to rise. It is a good news story for British creative industries, as her ready to wear collection is designed and is hand made by British businesses.

Simon Fuller, Victoria Beckham’s long term business partner, comments: “Victoria and I are both proud Brits and it feels good to be building a creative British business that is flourishing on a global stage.”

On February 15, 2012, Victoria posed alongside Anna Wintour OBE and other British Fashion icons to launch the British Government’s GREAT campaign. Sir Peter Westmacott, the UK’s Ambassador to the United States, comments:

“As one of Britain’s major fashion icons Victoria Beckham’s involvement with the GREAT Campaign will bring even more attention to Britain’s world renowned fashion designers, the magnificent range of shopping on offer and our distinctive British style.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

During the first week of February, ‘Fro Fashion Week, the ultimate celebration of natural hair, will be taking place in Atlanta, GA. I will be there front and center in the middle of all the awesomeness. What is natural hair you ask? Why is there so much hype about it? I mean, it’s just hair right? Well, there’s a little bit of history that goes behind the reasons why ‘Fro Fashion Week and other such events take place.

During the late 1800s, European-Americans favored African-American women whose hair was similar to European-American hair, which meant that their hair was not “kinky” or “nappy.”

This later sparked the invention of the metal hot comb, which straightens African-American hair by using heat. A chemical hair straightener, which is called a relaxer, was also invented. It straightens the hair using sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide, which both possess the ability to melt metal.[1] Many people are not aware that relaxers are potentially dangerous and can cause permanent injury.[2]

African-Americans began to straighten their hair in hopes of getting into the good graces of European-Americans. Today, European-American society’s perception of natural hair is not as extreme, but it is still not socially accepted. The purpose of events like ‘Fro Fashion Week is to encourage African-American women to love their natural hair.

No culture should be ashamed of who they are or do something drastic to change who they are in order to be accepted. Natural hair events are currently targeting African-American women with natural hair, and they encourage them to support other naturals in loving their hair the way it is.

African-American women with natural hair encounter negative influences in regards to their hair, such as being discriminated at work, hearing suggestions from friends and family to permanently straighten their hair, and hearing the phrase, “You have that good hair,” which means the curls in their hair are looser and not “nappy.”

These events also help to counter these negative influences and remind African-American women with natural hair that their hair is beautiful the way it is despite what society tells them. The events are not just for those with natural hair. Women with relaxed hair are also encouraged to attend these events.

Not to be persuaded or hypnotized into going natural, but to learn more about it and to learn to accept it and the choices of those with natural hair. Plus, ‘Fro Fashion Week is full of activities that are not just for those with natural hair. There is enough fun for everyone. I will be attending, and when I come come back, I will let you in on the experience.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

‘SUCCESS’ magazine, the national business publication that serves small business owners and entrepreneurs, delves into the world of celebrity marketing for the cover of its February issue. On the magazine’s cover is Kim Kardashian, the entrepreneur and ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ star, cited as the premier example of the hard-to-miss trend of celebrity marketing.

In the February issue, Kardashian talks exclusively to ‘SUCCESS’ about social media marketing, her goal-setting routine with mom and manager, Kris Jenner, and her current business strategy to pull back from specific products in favor of focusing on her larger product lines, such as the Kardashian Kollection at Sears.

Ranked by Ad.ly as the second-most-influential celebrity in social media, Kardashian has 17 million online fans, and her family’s various business ventures, including shows, books, fragrances, clothing lines, and shoes, are said to be worth $1 billion and growing.

“I honestly feel that I’ve gotten to where I am—with sales of my fragrance, the QVC line, our various products, and the success of our Dash stores—because I listen to my fans,” Kardashian tells ‘SUCCESS’. “I have such a personal relationship with them. Being very involved in social media, I feel a real connection with my fans.”

“People aren’t stupid,” she says. “You really have to love what you do, and you really have to believe in what you’re working for, for everyone else to believe you.” This willingness to be transparent via social media is perhaps the reason why this reality star has proven that celebrity marketing is a force that is here to stay, despite the fallibility of celebs.

“Celebrity marketing is clearly a major trend,” says ‘SUCCESS’ Media Executive VP, Steve Jamieson. “How could we not give our take on it? We take our promise to bring our readers relevant ideas in a positive manner very seriously. This is no exception.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Target struck gold as it recently introduced Missoni to the masses on September 13. The world renowned Italian designer famous for its signature zig zag patterns, created a line of products specifically for Target. Everything from clothes to household items was designed just for the limited time offer.

With Missoni usually catering to high-end clients, the reduced prices and accessible products at Target will be a highlight for many who wants to get designer goods. Missoni released a 400 item line that included women’s, men’s and children’s clothes. The designer line also created bedding and bath products, including bed sheets, pillows and towels.

Almost every room in a house could be decorated with Missoni products, as the line continued on into the kitchen and dining room with plates, glasses, mugs and serving dishes. There were also Missoni designed electronics, which included cases for phones and iPads.

Make-up bags and other women’s accessories like scarfs and headbands were all fitted with the Missoni signature pattern. The designer even created Missoni luggage, patio furniture and bicycles.

The release of Missoni products at Target stores nationwide created much anticipation. Although November’s annual Black Friday is months away, Target stores received massive lines similar to that of the Thanksgiving tradition. The surprising turnout at stores across the country was unprecedented.

The bargain deals for Missoni apparel and household items were a steal compared to its regular price. While a simple women’s tank top was priced at $29.99 at Target, the usual going price for a Missoni tank top reaches near $600. Prices of apparel can usually go well over $1,000 for pieces of clothing, which made Missoni’s line at Target hugely desirable.

The fashion frenzy reached unparalleled heights as customers lined up outside Target stores well before opening to buy Missoni products. Stores across the country quickly sold out as lovers of Missoni rushed to buy all they could. The Missoni craze created problems for customers in many stores.

Police action had to be taken in a Target store in Los Angeles as customers got out of hand. Missoni products created long lines and many people were unable to find the products they wanted as it quickly sold out.

In another unexpected turn of events, Target’s website crashed due to the high volume of customers wanting to buy Missoni goods on the internet. Shoppers were able to use the website early in the morning, but as the day went on, buying on the internet was no longer an option.

It was only a matter of time until Missoni products started to appear on other websites, including eBay and Craigslist. Tens of thousands of items were placed for sale after the Missoni launch at Target, where people tried to make their own profit off of the bargain prices.

A duvet cover that was originally priced at $117.99 at Target was found on eBay at the higher price of $349.99, while shoes that cost just shy of $50 at Target were being sold online for over $200. Target was hugely successful with the limited edition Missoni line. Although the demand much exceeded the supply, some lucky fashionistas were able to buy this Italian designer’s products at a bargain price.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The annual Pirelli Calendar is more than the publication of twelve nude, beautiful women. Karl Lagerfeld, who was given the desirable task of shooting the 2011 Pirelli calendar said, “The Pirelli Calendar is a myth, a tribute to the woman, sometimes anticipates the mores of society with its aesthetic codes and archetypes, and marks the future.”

The limited-edition calendar, which is released by Italian tire company Pirelli, is only reserved for Pirelli’s best clients (not more than 20.000 copies). During the years the wide range of authors and styles makes Pirelli calendar symbol of beauty and attract to reflect the spirit of our times.

The 2012 calendar is still a top secret but Italian Vanity Fair has an exclusive preview of the illustrious including Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Milla Jovovich, Saskia de Brauw, Isabeli Fontana, and the actress Rinko Kikuchi. The photo shoot takes place on Croatia and is provided by Mario Sorrenti, who is well known for his artful nudes for fashion magazines, including Vogue.

The official release of the calendar is December 6, but there are previews available at Vanity Fair Italia, showing behind-the-scenes images of Sorrenti and the girls at the shoot in the countryside, in old farmhouses surrounded by rocks, nature and sprayed with seawater.

Pirelli Calendar was published for the first time in 1964. The first photographer was Robert Freeman and the photoshoot took place in Mallorca, Spain. This was the beginning of a yearly tradition that features the world’s leading models and photographers — although it forced to make a good eight year break during the oil-shock between 1975 and 1983.

According to their website, during its publication years, the Pirelli calendar has provided an extraordinary array of imagery and all editions of the Pirelli Calendar provide an enduring suggestion to the metamorphosis of our society. For instance, in 2009 Pirelli shot in the south of Africa in the Botswana to underline company’s concerns about the environment.

The photographer Peter Beard said, “The 56 plates of the new Cal are a rich collage of images, quotations, observations by the artist on the environment, climate change and global warming, overpopulation and the depletion of natural resources.” On the other hand, the Calendar is created to provide cultural statements, provoke and educate the receiver.

In 1999, the photographer Herb Ritts, presented a journey through the history of women and society which started in the Belle Epoque in 1890s and ended in the 20th century. He provided his vision with famous actresses and models as Laetitia Casta and Sophie Dall.

The success of the calendar is helped on by the renowned photographers, actresses and models. As in the past, Pirelli engage the most popular beauties in fashion industry like Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campell, Cindy Crawford and actresses such as Monica Belluci, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren or Jennifer Lopez.

Calendars have been launched by significant photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh and Richard Avedon. So far, 31 photographers have done photo shoots for the Pirelli Calendar all over the world. From the incredible beautiful beaches of Mallorca, Tunisia, Jamaica, Seychelles, Rio de Janeiro and California through the glamour of Miami, New York, Hollywood and Shanghai to the mystic atmosphere of Edinburgh, Cotswolds in Scotland and England.

The 2011 photo shoot was done by legendary fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld. The photo shoot took place in a studio in Paris. Lagerfeld photographed top models and actresses as Greek and Roman gods, myths and heroes. The title of the calendar was “Mythology” and famous names as Anja Rubik, Isabelli Fontana, Magdalena Frackowiak and Lara Stone were taking apart in this artistic event.

The phenomenon of Pirelli Calendar has been documented in ‘The Saga of the Pirelli calendar’ by Emmanuel Le Ber, in 2010. The documentary focuses on the calendar’s history, from 1964 to 2010, behind the scenes, and how it’s become a marketing event.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The third Vogue Fashions Night Out event was held in the capital of Spain on September 7.

After visiting Moscow, one of the most important fashion events landed in Madrid transforming its streets in an authentic runaway.

Luxury, cocktails and glamour fulfilled the most fashionable three Madrid areas, Ortega and Gasset Street, Salesas area, and Fuencarral Street, where a total of 300 shops opened until 12 p.m.

Everything was prepared for Vogues night, including, balloons, food, champagne, DJ’s, and street dancers.

Ortega and Gasset Street, well known for having some of the most important and expensive designer’s shops, was crowed with people. Nobody wanted to miss the Fashion’s Night and all that it had prepared for its visitors.

Spanish designer Modesto Lomba said to EFE news agency, “Fashion´s Night is a good opportunity to show that Madrid is also a fashion icon city.”

Wearing their best outfits, there were people waiting in line for hours outside the shops to have the chance to enter and have some champagne and canapés while they were having a look.

During that night shops turned into authentic discos, where you could find real rock bands playing as you would if you were at a concert. The contrast was amazing; “shop assistants were offering cocktails and beers to the guests, rather than cleaning up around the store.”

Dolce and Gabanna, Tiffany’s, Hugo Boss, Jimmy Choo and others, opened their doors to the visitors. They were giving away gifts and the opportunity to see their products in a “VIP way.”

That night everybody had the opportunity to be a model for a day. With several “photocalls screeners” distributing in different streets of Madrid, people could pose in front of professional photographers. In addition, people had the opportunity of appearing in the next Vogue edition.

Presenters, actor, singers, designers and people related with the fashion industry made a total of 40,000 guests for this event that will visit 18 different countries.

The next stops for the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out will be the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Sao Paulo, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Portugal,.Rio de Janeiro, Taiwan,India,China, Greece and Turkey. The event will continue from September 9-15.

Fashion’s Night Out was originated in 2009 in New York. It was an initiative of different Vogue international editions to support shopping when the fashion and beauty industry were going through a bad time as a consequence of the world economic crisis.

However, since the two great edition’s success Vogues Night Out has became the most important fashion event that represents the beginning of the new season.

This year, for the first time ever, people from all over the world could also take advantage of the special online discounts that some brands offered in this fashion-must date of the year.

With the motto “You can´t keep gender violence as a secret,” the lingerie shop wants to donate around 40.000 Euros (around 55,500 dollars) to this NGO so that they could use it to support the gender violence cases. Starting this month, this campaign will be available until the next summer.

This mini collection includes three shorts and three t-shirts with positive and solidarity messages on it that encourage women to say “no” to gender violence. The garment, made by the designer Little is drawing, also includes a yellow logo from Amnesty International.

As the Women Secret´s chairman, Jaume Miquel, stated at the advertising campaign presentation in Madrid the chain is really worried about gender violence because they have around 1.150 employees, and at least 1.000 of them are women.

Miquel has also claimed that they did this campaign last year in Portugal with excellent results. What they did in the shop window was to announce for a short period of time ads with the motto “Coming up in 15 or three weeks” and the word ‘Secret’ covered by a yellow tape, so people could just see the word ‘Women’ with a candlelight next to it.

On the other hand, the Amnesty International chairman´s, Ana Rebollar, pointed out that gender violence is “the most popular Human Right´s rape, because one of three women is hit, and is forced to have sex with her husband or boyfriend”.

Rebollar also wanted to highlight that according to the World Health Organization, the 70% of women who suffer from the abuse die due to gender violence episodes. This is the first death reason among women between 16 and 34 years old.

The non- governmental chairman also added that gender violence should be recognized by law as a “big crime”. Rebollar also stated that “in Spain the legislation doesn´t guarantee the victim’s protection and it doesn´t take care of the immigrant women that die on average five times more than the Spanish women”.

Wood plays Sophie-Anne, the vampire queen of Louisiana, who is a 500-year-old vampire from France. Sophie-Anne is a charismatic, sly, merciless and very clever character; in the hit series, “True Blood”

The 23-year-old actress chopped her hair off and debuted her new look for the season premiere of, “True Blood.” She showed up sporting a modern blonde pixie cut with a tailored suit, with an elegant gray vest and form-fitting pants accompanied by red suspenders.

Wood is no stranger to changing up her style. She has changed her hair color before, leaving her blonde locks behind to transform into a dark ginger.

Last summer Wood, had an on and off again relationship with rocker Marilyn Manson.

Wood also recently revealed she has no preference between dating men and women and came out as bisexual during an interview with Esquire Magazine.

“But I don’t even have rules about dating guys or girls. I’m open. I’ve always been attracted to both sexes. I’m attracted to people’s confidence, rather than what sex they are – the way they carry themselves and their personalities.” She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Wood has worked on several movies, including The Conspirator, which was released in 2011.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

For centuries, fashion has been an outlet for creative vanity. Today, connoisseurs seek out high-end fashions by designers like Donatella Versace, Christian Lacroix and Miuccia Prada. Housewives of Beverly Hills or the like search for designer clothes to wear to advertise not only their “taste” but most importantly their bottomless pockets and limitless credit cards. It is easy for fashion to be seen as a frivolous way to show monetary and societal status, instead of as a way to be creative and unique.

Parsons The New School For Design in New York City has produced some of the world’s most notable designers, including Anna Sui, Donna Karen and Marc Jacobs. This May, one of Parsons’ current students will be graduating with a BFA in Fashion Design and a lot of promise, heart and talent. Kansas-bred Jovana Mirabile always knew she would attend Parsons for fashion. When she was 13 years old she read an article about the school in Seventeen Magazine that convinced her Parsons was the only school for her. Her confidence and determination were so high, in fact, that she did not apply to any other school. If she didn’t get accepted into Parsons, she would not go to school for fashion at all. No other school could compare.

Jovana did in fact get accepted into Parsons and has been thriving there ever since she first step foot on site. Her life has always revolved around fashion, so she was ecstatic to get in to such a prestigious fashion college.

“When I was two years old my mom tells me I used to pick out all of my own outfits and dress myself,” said Jovana. “I would change at least four times a day.” It wasn’t just the changing of clothes that tipped her off that fashion would be her future. Teachers would notice how Jovana paid attention to what she and other classmates would wear. “When I was in first grade, my teacher told my mom and I that she knew one day she would be buying my designs at Bloomingdales,” Jovana explained. “As a six year old, I had no idea what that meant, so my mom explained to me that she thought I would be a fashion designer someday. From that day on my heart was set on becoming a designer.”

Her favorite class overall at Parsons has been her methods class. Methods is a class where she really gets to channel her creativity, because its curriculum focuses on draping and sewing personal designs. Jovana sees herself as a 3D thinker and therefore enjoys the opportunity to explore her designs in an approach other than sketching. “I have found as a designer that I prefer to drape rather than sketch in the beginning of my design process,” Jovana said.

Like all fashion enthusiasts, Jovana has a favorite designer, one that she looks up to and admires: Matthew Williamson. “Everyone that knows me knows my love for his work,” Jovana explained. She finds herself inspired by his embroidery, print and use of color. Jovana had the chance to intern with Williamson in London this past summer. She was able to see firsthand how his design process works. It was a dream come true for this starry-eyed future designer. “There are many designers I admire, but Matthew Williamson has really stole my heart,” she exclaimed.

Jovana also likes to make it known that although she has her favorites, she does not dislike any designer. She believes she finds inspiration in Williamson and others because of her own personal aesthetic. She does, however, respects every designer’s work despite whether it matches her own style. “I think that there is something to appreciate about every designer,” Jovana said. “Different styles and aesthetics are what make fashion so exciting. It would be so boring if everyone designed the same way.”

Jovana doesn’t like to follow trends because she feels they can “take away from your creative freedom as a designer.” She understands that trends may equate to sales, but she feels no inclination to follow any. If she had to, it would be one of bright colors and prints, which lucky for her, are in style this season. Many designers, like Dolce e Gabbana’s D&G line, are using neon colors, which are a personal favorite for Jovana. She is also relieved that drop crotch pants are no longer in style. “It’s just not flattering!”

While Jovana does not follow fashion trends, she does start her own. Jovana has a very big heart. When she was 13 years old her school required her to complete 50 service hours to graduate. She took this requirement as an opportunity to share her talents with others. Inspired by her mother, who worked with behaviorally disordered and at-risk teenagers, she decided to share her talents with less fortunate students. She started an organization that she named Fashionista Girls. “The organization began with just myself, my mom, my sister and a few friends going to different local special-need schools and talking with young girls about having self confidence and believing in themselves, while introducing them to skincare, doing their hair, make-up and nails,” said Jovana. “We created little gift bags with skincare products and make-up for the girls to keep.”

Jovana quickly realized that her organization wouldn’t be able to continue if she didn’t find a way to get some income. It was, and still is, important to her to keep her company alive, because many of the girls she works with don’t have a mother or older sister figure to talk to, so she feels it is important to be there for them. Jovana holds fashion shows with her designs, asking for donations at the door, to raise money for Fashionista Girls. Over the last five years, she raised over $20,000 from her shows, making it possible to keep, and expand, her program.

Although the last four years of her life has been devoted to her studies, Fashionista Girls has continued with the help of her sister, cousins and friends back in Kansas. Last year, Jovana held a fashion show in NYC with other fashion students. This was another dream come true for her.

“I hope to continue the program and eventually grow it nationwide,” Jovana said. “My dream is to one day have my own line and have Fashionista Girls be a huge part within my company. I would love to have different chapters in each state, possibly have it organized within design schools, and start a scholarship fund to help aspiring designers who cannot afford design school to follow their dreams. That is what Fashionista Girls is all about — following your dreams and believing in yourself.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

How far will we go to get our children off on the right foot?

Toddler and baby pageant shows are becoming more and more popular these days. The hit TV series “Toddlers in Tiaras” on TLC perfectly portrays the ups and downs of these ‘mini-me’ beauty contests. At what age do these contests begin to effect the children? If they do at all?

The dream of every parent who enters their infant or toddler into one of these pageant shows is to either simply make them a more confident adult, live the life they had wanted vicariously through their children or hope to one day see their daughter walking down the runway during the Miss Universe competition. Are any of these a good enough reason to put a five-year-old in heels and fake eyelashes?

Public speaking is a huge fear of the majority of adults. As children we never really have the opportunity or reason to stand in front of large crowds of people and speak. A lot of kids have a hard enough time getting up in front of 20 of their peers and talking for ten minutes, this only continues on into adulthood for most. So why not get them comfortable with it early on?

During these toddler pageant shows, every little girl has to show off a talent and put on a small ‘show’. If this doesn’t get them over a fear of public speaking, nothing will, right? Parents constantly say that these pageant shows are helping to mold their daughters into more confident adults. Even though for decades people have turned out perfectly fine without being put into wigs and being forced to plaster a fake smile on their faces at the age of three.

Yes, most pageants come with a decent cash prize that, if you’re smart, will go straight into a college fund. Not towards expensive and extravagant toys and clothing for a child that could be satisfied with a giant cardboard box. And yes, some little girls may genuinely enjoy the ‘princess’ lifestyle but they still need to be kept down to earth.

For preparation of these contests, toddlers will go through hours of hair and makeup to look like real living dolls. Most of them get acrylic nails, fake eyelashes and a pair of fake teeth to help them look the part. We all know how much it hurts to rip off acrylic nails and since when do dentists agree to making molds of a three year olds teeth just so that they can avoid having to deal with losing a tooth (which is what is supposed to happen to children – they lose teeth). There seem to be some health risks along with wearing that oh-so desirable princess tiara.

No one is saying that every child beauty queen is going to grow up into this dysfunctional person, most of them won’t. But is it all really worth the risk of the possible damage that could be done?
