The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

A massive development project has been initiated to improve the surroundings of the prehistoric monument Stonehenge in England. The monument is considered an awe-inspiring creation attracting many national and international tourists annually. Work is intended to transform the vicinity by closing the main road, the car park and fences located near the monument, making way for a new visitor center.

The organization English Heritage has said that the total cost outlay proposed for redevelopment of the area is going to be £27 million, including the construction of the new visitor center.

Chief Excutive of English Heritage Simon Thurley said “A new dawn at Stonehenge is truly upon us. Though the stones themselves never failed to awe visitors, their setting has been a national embarrassment and disgrace. After nearly 30 years English Heritage finally has a scheme that will transform the setting of the stones and our visitor’s experience of them.”

Mr. Simon believed that the program will gradually restore the lost appeal of the historical monument and help in glorifying the importance of the most famous structure in England.

Stonehenge is a pre-historic structure located in Wiltshire County, about 8 miles west of Salisbury. Construction work has already begun by the Vinci Construction Company. John Penrose, the Heritage and Tourism minister, said “People have been talking about the project for nearly 30 years and so I’m absolutely delighted that work is finally under way to preserve this internationally recognizable prehistoric world heritage site, and to improve the visitor experience for those who come to marvel at it too.”

Stonehenge is considered a great stone-age mystery, mesmerizing millions of people, inspiring and enchanting them. A unique aspect of these wonderful creations is that nobody still clearly knows for what they been erected, and are considered as last gasp of the stone age. The British poet Layamon, inspired by this magnificent structure, wrote in 1215 AD,

The stones are great;
And magic power they have;
Men that are sick;
Fare to that stone;
And they wash that stone
And with that water bathe away their sickness,

After the completion of the redevelopment project, these serene locations will for sure envelope the first time visitors under its stunning beauty, charming grasslands and mysteries stones. For quite a long time this monument has been at the top of the list for adventurous history lovers and tourists at large visiting Britain, and with the Olympics around the corner, this upgrading project is a blessing in disguise.

Britain, a country bursting with rich heritage, architectural wonders, exciting beaches, world-class cities, breath-taking grass lands and captivating villages, makes another step forward in attracting millions of tourists from around the world, by launching the program to redevelop the Stonehenge vicinity.
