The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Wins are wins, and the Houston Texans will take them however they come.

Matt Schaub had only 95 passing yards and one touchdown, Arian Foster accumulated 102 yards on 29 carries, and Houston (8-1) exited Soldier Field with a tooth-and-nail 13-7 victory over the Chicago Bears (7-2) on Sunday night.

Even with heavy rain, strong wind, brisk temperaturesa and all, the Texans tied with the Atlanta Falcons for the league’s best record by the end of the night.

“It’s huge for us, we were 7-1 going in, to come out 8-1 in a hostile place, given the weather and the team we were playing, that’s a tough group to go against,” said Schaub.

Sloppiness throughout the night didn’t come to a surprise for anyone with the weather being as brutal as it was. Chicago turned the ball over four times with two Jay Cutler interceptions and two fumbles. Schaub equaled as many picks as Cutler, making him responsible for all of Houston’s turnovers.

A 51 yard Robbie Gould field goal put the Bears on the board and tied the game at 3 with 12:52 remaining in the second quarter.

The Texans went into the locker room with a 10-3 lead following a 2 yard diving touchdown reception by Foster into the right pylon with about four minutes left in the half.

Cutler would not return in the second half due to a concussion suffered late in the second quarter. Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins laid a helmet-to-helmet hit on Cutler as he stood in there and let one go downfield. Dobbins was hit with a personal foul penalty.

Former Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders starting quarterback, Jason Campbell, replaced Cutler, who completed seven of 14 attempts for 40 yards.

Campbell made a handful of quality throws, but was unable to come through late in the fourth quarter, trailing 13-6.

Unsure of Jay Cutler’s status for the Bears next game, receiver, Brandon Marshall, stated “In the meantime, Campbell is more than capable. There was no heads hanged down when Jay was down. There was no complaining. We understand we have a starting quarterback in the backup so we’re fortunate to have him. There will be no drop off in our offense.”

For Houston, this was about a lot more than just one game.

“I think we showed them we can win any game, any situation, any time, any place, tough weather conditions, tough place on the road, a very good football team,” said defensive end J.J. Watt. “We won, so say what you want.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Houston Texans finally did it in 2011. On their tenth NFL birthday last season, the long-overdue AFC South franchise no longer had to fantasize about the opportunity to compete in the postseason after clinching their first division title, playoff birth and victory after posting a 10-6 record during the regular season.

Over the last handful of years, Houston had been repeatedly labeled as one of the league’s sleeper teams ready to crash the postseason party. With rock-solid weapons in Pro Bowlers such as quarterback Matt Schaub, wide receiver Andre Johnson, running back Arian Foster and defensive end Mario Williams, it was pretty difficult to simply overlook the type of potential that the Texans possessed on paper.

Despite a 2-8 collapse in 2010 following a 4-2 start to that year, they exuded plenty of confidence entering the 2011 campaign. They heard the chatter about who they could be and what they could accomplish if they somehow found a way to put it all together. And once Peyton Manning – the future Hall of Famer and former Indianapolis Colts quarterback who plagued the Texans dating back to their first season – was sidelined due to a serious neck injury that failed to heal properly, the Texans were immediately claimed the unanimous AFC South favorites.

Now that their division rivals – the Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans – are all in rebuilding mode and being led by young quarterbacks (rookie Andrew Luck and second year men Blaine Gabbert and Jake Locker, respectively), the Texans will once again be heavy favorites to snag one of the top four AFC playoff seeds as a division champion.

Among the key losses that will be tough for head coach Gary Kubiak and his squad to overcome include those of Williams, wide receiver Jacoby Jones, linebacker DeMeco Ryans, cornerback Jason Allen, tight end Joel Dreessen and kicker Neil Rackers. Two valuable additions that have been brought on board, however, consist of veteran linebacker Bradie James and cornerback Alan Ball.

Defensive lineman Whitney Mercilus, wide receivers DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin, guard Brandon Brooks, offensive lineman Ben Jones, defensive lineman Jared Crick, and kicker Randy Bullock compose the team’s early draft picks.

If Schaub can remain healthy (unlike last season, when he was placed on IR to end the season following a Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he sustained a Lisfranc injury), the offense has a great chance of improving an already impressive 2011 ranking of 23.8 points per game, which was 10th in the league.

As far as the defensive side of the ball is concerned, the loss of Williams will certainly be felt at times. But even if that is the case, the Texans ranked 4th overall in defensive scoring last season, at a clip of just 17.4 points per game, and with that much talent they should still be an elite defense nonetheless.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Cincinnati Bengals (7-6) let a fourth quarter lead over the Houston Texans (10-3) slip, and fell to a 20-19 loss, in what was a crucial AFC matchup with the playoffs beckoning.

After a first quarter that boasted no touchdowns, but did see the home side take the lead with two field goals to one, quarterback Andy Dalton bounced back from a tough game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, by finding wide receiver Jerome Simpson with a 17-yard touchdown pass.

Mike Nugent then went on to add another field goal before halftime, giving the Bengals a 13 point lead heading into the third quarter. The Texans closed in on the Bengals with tight end Joel Dreessen collecting a 6-yard touchdown pass from rookie quarterback T. J. Yates, but conceded a field goal late in the third quarter, setting up Cincinnati with a nine point lead going into the fourth and final quarter.

A field goal early in the fourth quarter moved the Texans to within six points and made it a one possession game. With time running down, Yates showed a maturity which belied his status as a rookie, and moved the Texans down the field, eventually finding Kevin Walter for a 6-yard touchdown pass, and gave Houston the win thanks to a single point lead over the Bengals.

Cincinnati’s defense held strong for most of the game, with Rey Maualuga forcing two fumbles, and outside linebacker Thomas Howard connecting with nine solo tackles as he was a dominant force on defense.

Whilst Dalton may have been receiving the headlines so far this season as a potential Rookie of the Year, it was his opposite number who impressed today. Yates threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns, whilst also throwing one interception, as he led Houston admirably in the absence of Matt Schaub.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In the battle for the BCS Championship Game, there seems to be only one shoe-in for a definite BCS bid: the LSU Tigers. At an undefeated 11-0, the Tigers have stomped out the likes of Oregon, then-ranked Mississippi State, West Virginia and Florida. But contrary to popular belief, they are not the only undefeated team in college football.

The Houston Cougars, lead by red-hot QB Case Keenum, have been on a roll since their season began. Leading the NCAA in passing yard (447.5) and points per game (53.1), the dynamic Cougar offense has rolled over every team they’ve played.

So why are they only ranked ninth in the BCS Top 25?

Strength of schedule

The Houston Cougars have yet to play a single ranked team this season. They opened the year with a, beating UCLA by only four points and they barely inched out over Louisiana Tech, with a 35-34 road victory. But because strength of schedule — essentially, how good your opponents are — is weighed so heavily by the BCS rankings, Houston can’t possibly move up among the charts.

Even though the Cougars haven’t beaten anyone of importance this season, they still deserve the chance to show that they can compete on bigger stages against tougher opponents. Houston’s beaten their opponents by an average of 31.73 points per game; isn’t it time they get the chance to showcase their flammable offense against a team more suitable to extinguish it?

Arguably the best defense in the NCAA, LSU is ranked second for points allowed, only giving up an average of 10 points per game. However, some of us would rather see the No. 1 offense take on the No. 1 defense for what could be the biggest game of the year.

I was personally bored to tears watching the LSU-Alabama game a few weeks ago. And seeing as though all of the anticipation for an Oregon-LSU rematch was smashed when USC came and strangled the Ducks’ hopes of a BCS Title, who better to replace the Oregon “Quack Attack” Spread Offense than Houston.

The Cougars haven’t played anyone worth getting them into that game, but going undefeated has got to count for something. Give them a chance to take on a worthy opponent, and, guaranteed, it will be the most exciting game of the season.
