The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing is presenting another action-packed entry in their line of Dungeons & Dragons comics. This April, Dungeons & Dragons: Cutter, a five-issue miniseries written by R.A. and Geno Salvatore with art by David Baldeon and covers by Steve Ellis, weaves the tale of a family fiercely divided and at odds with itself, with a legendary sword hanging in the balance.

When the battle-hardened Drow renegade Tos’un must choose an heir to his legacy, his half-Drow son Tierflin and daughter Doum’weille become locked in vicious competition. But what will the prize, the bloodthirsty sword Khazid’hea, have to say on the matter?

“These comic series have become a wonderful tool for me to fill in the blanks and to crystallize my thoughts on the Legend of Drizzt novels going forward,” explains R.A. Salvatore. “The fallout from the twisting events in Neverwinter Tales not only came into play in the last couple of Drizzt books, but allowed me a strong plot line for an upcoming novel I’ve yet to pen. The same is true for Cutter – I see it already. So while these comic stories are self-contained, they open up to the wider stories going forward.”

From the writing team of powerhouse Dungeons & Dragons veterans R.A. and Geno Salvatore comes a tale steeped in action and intrigue, woven into the fantastically imaginative world that can only be found in the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons & Dragons. Rounded out by the vivid art of David Baldeon and Steve Ellis’ striking covers, Dungeons & Dragons: Cutter is sure to be a wildly fun ride for fans of Dungeons & Dragons and comics everywhere, not to mention an unexpected tie-in to this summer’s blockbuster R.A. Salvatore novel.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Library of American Comics will be collecting comics legend Russ Manning’s classic run with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ King of the Jungle in 2013, IDW publishing recently announced. Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips is a four-volume series. The first three volumes will chronologically collect all of Manning’s daily black & white and full-color Sunday strips from 1967 to 1974, while the fourth volume will collect the remaining Sunday strips, which Manning continued to do until 1979.

“The addition of Tarzan to the Library of American Comics amplifies even further that the imprint is the premier archival home for comic strip reprints and collections,” says IDW’s President and Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “Russ Manning’s Tarzan run is one of the real highlights of the modern age of adventure strips and we are extremely excited to be the home of its long-anticipated return to print.”

The series of hardcover volumes will commence May 29th with Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 – 1969. Fans will be treated to the first-ever collection of a historic turning point in Tarzan history: when Russ Manning was handpicked by the Burroughs estate to return the strip to its creator’s original vision. Manning put together a dream team of assistants in this historic endeavor, including future comics greats Dave Stevens, William Stout, and Mike Royer, creating one of the most loaded rosters in comics history, and a perfect opportunity for new fans to discover the adventures of Viscount Greystoke.

In his introduction to Volume One, William Stout writes, “Russ Manning was a natural storyteller. He may also be one of the most underrated writers in comics. His beautiful art is so captivating that it’s easy to understand how it might overshadow his scripts. He was as adept with telling Tarzan tales in contemporary Africa as he was setting Ape Man stories in dinosaur-infested Pal-ul-don.”

Reproduced from the Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. file copies, fans can expect Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips to receive the same critically acclaimed, award-winning treatment that Dean Mullaney, The Library of American Comics, and IDW Publishing have become renowned for.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products have announced a partnership to publish an exciting series of works based on the legendary series, The X-Files. IDW’s publishing plan includes reprinting collections of the classic issues published intermittently from 1995 through 2009, as well as creating brand-new X-Files comics to launch in June 2013.

Over two movies and two hundred television episodes, The X-Files, is a juggernaut of science fiction-tinged intrigue, unique characters and carefully constructed stories. The show’s popularity raged into the comic world, seeing successful series mounted by publishers Topps and Wildstorm. Despite this, new publishing has not been available since 2009’s joint Wildstorm/IDW crossover – 30 Days of Night/The X-Files – leaving fans without a venue for the continuing sequential adventures of Mulder and Scully… until now.

“The X-Files is a classic property that helped redefine fans’ expectations for the science-fiction and horror genres,” said IDW’s President/Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. “The possibilities for new comic stories are virtually unlimited!”

“The fans of The X-Files have remained loyal to the series since its conclusion. What better way to continue the show’s legacy and give back to them than through new stories in a different medium,” said Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products. “IDW has worked with a number of our Fox properties, and we know they’re going to do great things with these iconic characters.”

In 2013, fans of The X-Files will want to believe in new comics from IDW Publishing. The home of successful kindred series like 30 Days of Night, Doctor Who, and Locke & Key, to name a few, IDW is excited to bring the enduring legacy of The X-Files back to comics.

“Few shows have captured the zeitgeist and fans’ imaginations like The X-Files, and fewer shows still have left people hungry for more in the way this one did,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Our new series will be picking up where the second film left off, which will hopefully be as exciting for fans to read as it is for us to develop.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing has announced Doomsday.1, a new four-issue miniseries coming in May from legendary comics mastermind John Byrne. Harkening back to Byrne’s earliest days in comics, Doomsday.1 tells the thrilling tale of seven adventurous astronauts, who watch in horror, aloft in the International Space Station, as most of Earth is annihilated by a titanic solar flare.

“I’ve been thinking for some time that I would like to revisit a post-apocalypse kind of scenario, such as was seen in my very first ‘dramatic’ work in comics, but this time without the more obvious fantasy elements of that original series (mermaids, alien robots, frozen mammoths, etc.),” said Byrne. “When bits and pieces of this new series first started to percolate around in my head, I knew almost at once the shape that ‘revisit’ would take; something in the ‘All-New, All-Different’ vein. And the first time I doodled some images of my ‘crew,’ I knew I was there!”

When all communication is lost and their home appears destroyed, what are the intrepid astronauts to do? Prepare to cling to a new life in zero gravity, waiting for the space stations supplies to dwindle to nothing? That doesn’t sound very adventurous, now does it? No, the true thrills of Doomsday.1 come when the seven stranded heroes descend back to their decimated home world to confront the dangers left behind by the universe’s cruel ravaging.

“As much as I enjoyed seeing John work on the various licensed titles we’ve done, it’s a continued blast to work with him in developing new concept after new concept this year,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “If Earth has to be destroyed in a flaming conflagration, there’s no one I’d rather see bring that carnage and its aftermath to life than JB.”

This May, a brave new world comes with a brave new series. Don’t be left behind as John Byrne embarks on this fantastic new voyage. Fans will be treated to Byrne on full-color art and writing duties and subscribers will receive a special wraparound subscription variant, packed full of the John Byrne sci-fi magic we all know and love.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Ghostbusters are gone, spirited away by some dastardly demons from another dimension. But spectral shenanigans haven’t ceased in the city that never sleeps, meaning a new group will need to step up and don the proton packs. IDW Publishing and Sony Pictures Consumer Products have announced the launch of an all-new Ghostbusters ongoing comic series, picking up where the first mega-hit ongoing volume left off. The Ghostbusters creative super-team of Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening (along with series colorist-extraordinaire Luis Antonio Delgado) return to bust out more ectoplasmic excitement in this second ongoing volume.

“We’ve seen the Ghostbusters deal with a newly minted servant of Gozer, a child-possessing demon, the Spirit of Death, a cross-country road trip and sloppy business rivals,” explained writer Burnham. “But we’ve never seen what might happen if something got the jump on them. This story takes a look at what might happen if the Ghostbusters were abducted. The city still needs paranormal exterminators, after all.”

Ghostbusters #1 marks the exciting beginning of “The New Ghostbusters” storyline, and will include four covers by Schoening, each featuring one of the New Ghostbusters. Additionally, each issue will contain an all-new Real Ghostbusters 2-page back-up story written and drawn by Burnham. Kicking off in February, will the New Ghostbusters be able to rescue their predecessors, or will they share the same fate?

“Editing the Ghostbusters ongoing series for IDW has been the highlight of my editorial career,” said series editor Tom Waltz. “Way back when we started, we prayed we’d be able to finish four issues. And now, sixteen issues in the can and a new ongoing volume ready to rock the world, I’m proud to say Ghostbusters has proven to be a tremendous success for IDW, and that’s completely owed to our awesome fans and the super-powered creative team concocting comic book magic month after month!”

Fans of the series should ask their local comic book shop about the variant Xermanico cover, and the unique variant tribute cover by Schoening, only for loyal subscription box customers.

“This book has travelled everywhere I have on tour over the last few years,” Martin said. “I’ve had a light table and art supplies set up on countless busses and hotel rooms across the world.”

They own the night… they yearn for the day! In this gothic sci-fi adventure, Martin and Allen bring a new grisly horror to life. Set in the fictional city of Basilika in 2127, this six-issue series narrates the journey of Basilika City’s last great hope, Vitriol, as he stands as the only force that can stop Lord Barthus and his heinous vampire regime from overtaking the city.

“Billy is a one of kind. He’s a guy that we hope to be someday,” Sean “Cheeks” Galloway said. “Although he’s had major success with his band Good Charlotte, his love and his drive to draw and to succeed as comic illustrator is mind-boggling and inspiring to us creators to push our limits.”

Additionally, Martin is producing a soundtrack inspired by Vitriol The Hunter. Under the name Villain, Martin has been creating remixes, as well as writing and producing music for other artists. This will be his first official release of original music as Villain, showcasing his dynamic mix of electronic music with traditional film score. The special soundtrack for Vitriol will be available for free download inside the comic.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Beginning this February, IDW Publishing is excited to announce a unique new miniseries by writer Mike Heimos and artist Nick Runge (Judge Dredd, Ghostbusters) Taking readers back to World War II and to the oft-unseen locales explored by the 6th Infantry Division of the 6th Army, Fever Ridge is an 8-part series, a historical fiction inspired by real soldiers and their incredible experiences.

Written by first-time creator Heimos in tribute to his grandfather, a decorated soldier, Fever Ridge puts readers in country with “The Sightseein’ Sixth” and the Alamo Scouts, their jungle commandoes. This is a look at the world’s greatest war from another angle. Exploring General Douglas MacArthur’s campaigns deep in the jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines, this is a story that will explore exotic characters, events, and locales and will unearth a few secrets along the way.

“I am thrilled to be teaming up with IDW to tell this story of ‘The Sightseers’,” said Heimos. “It is one that involves subject matter that has received too little attention in general; almost none in historical fiction and I don’t think any in graphic novels/comics” he continued.

“The heart of the forest can be as cruel and tangled as our mind. Yet, it’s beauty and fire hold the keys to this world,” said series artist Runge. “The War is only one of the many faces that shape this tale of survival and suspense in the dark corners of New Guinea. Our main characters face not only the horror of combat and secrets of the jungle, but the question of how these events will effect the path of their lives when they return home…. if they do… This is a new take on World War II in the Pacific and I’m truly honored to have a fantastic company like IDW publishing this series. It’s a perfect fit!”

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with artist Nick Runge on a number of covers for various books I’ve edited,” said editor Tom Waltz. “His awesome talent speaks for itself and he’s always proven to be a true professional. But, man, I was completely awestruck when he first showed me the pages he was doing for Fever Ridge. I mean, I knew he was good, but not THAT good! Combine that with Michael’s fantastic story and I knew right then and there, we needed to find a way to get Fever Ridge published at IDW — and we did!”

Rounded out by the coloring talents of Jordie Bellaire (The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom, Captain Marvel) and the letters of Brandon DeStefano (Term Life, Harvest), Fever Ridge promises to be as eye-popping as it is vividly thought-provoking.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing is thrilled to announce another project in their ongoing partnership with comics legend Kevin Eastman. Lost Angeles is an action-packed, science-fiction collaboration with fellow comics luminaries Simon Bisley and Joe Pearson.

When all hell breaks loose following a massive comet’s near miss, the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles is irreparably fractured and claimed by legions of brutal gangs. Perpetually turf-thirsty bands of fierce warriors fight day in and day out to claim blood and respect across swaths of scarce land, battered by cosmically twisted disasters.

As civilization recedes into uncompromising tribal life, an anomaly surfaces: two rival gang members, Mikal and Angel, find themselves in the throes of a comet-crossed love affair. Threatening to tear their respective clans apart from within, their love becomes the centerpiece to all-out gang war as Lost Angeles reaches its fever-pitched conclusion over six issues.

“I am thrilled to be back at the creative table with my good friend Simon Bisely, and the very talented Joe Pearson–this is one of the coolest projects I have been involved with in a great many years–and my first solo art project in more than two decades!” explains Kevin “I can wait to show the fans what I’m going to do he–my career as a artist is about to go into high gear!”

From a concept by Eastman and Bisley, a story by Eastman, Bisley, and Joe Pearson, and featuring painted covers by Bisley with pencils and inks by Eastman, Lost Angeles promises to be a brutal, gorgeous, post-apocalyptic thrill ride the likes of which civilization has yet to see, and may not be able to handle.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

IDW Publishing and Nickelodeon are excited to announce the launch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual 2012, a 48-page jam packed story written by co-writers Tom Waltz and Kevin Eastman, and drawn by co-creator Eastman. It’s been nearly 20 years since Eastman has created a full TMNT story, but fans will relish this Annual filled with non-stop downtown action and mayhem that is well worth the wait.

“After nearly 20 years I find myself once again fully engrossed in the wonderful mythos of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and having the absolute best time in my life!” said Eastman. “The intense creative energy flying around between IDW and Nickelodeon is when this idea was inspired and born, so with this incredible team, I’m back on the drawing board–hanging with the boys, knocking out a full blown epic–and it is AWESOME!”

Releasing in October this year, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual 2012 follows the adventure of Raphael and Casey as they find themselves in the middle of a criminal escapade gone wrong. Rival clans jockey for power in the NYC criminal underworld, and the Ninja Turtles are drawn into the chaos. Expect the unexpected in this exciting, all-new tale that sets up a crucial future TMNT storyline. Readers are encouraged to ask their retailers about the special variant “Eastman Layout” edition.

IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics launched in August 2011 with great success, resulting in multiple printings of the first five ongoing issues. Last month, TMNT comics launched digitally, and are now featured in IDW Comics and comiXology Mobile Apps for Android, iPhone, Kindle Fire, and more. There is no doubt that the Turtles have made a huge comeback, and IDW and Nickelodeon are catering to the fans by providing even more Ninja Turtle action.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Wrangling fierce supernatural beasts is a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it. The adventures of Scottie and Howie—the animal control specialists who got in a little over their heads in Stephan Nilson and Charles Pritchett’s 2011 graphic novel The Pound—are set to continue this September from IDW Publishing.

Teaming with artist Ibrahim Moustafa, Nilson and Pritchett are bringing The Pound back for four issues of things that go bump in the night, featuring the brave (and exhausted) guys who chase them through Cleveland’s darkest corners. When Animal Control specialists Scottie and Howie were laid off by the City of Cleveland and went into business for themselves, they never could have guessed they’d be tangling with werewolves.

“It’s great to be back with IDW to publish The Pound. We’re all excited for this next series. While Horror Business was our origin story, Ghouls Night Out gives us the opportunity to really dive into the Scottie and Howie’s world as they adjust their lives to living and dealing with monsters, and I think the readers are really going to enjoy Ibrahim’s illustration style,” said Nilson. “He’s done a great job capturing the action and humor of the story.”

Our intrepid heroes made it through their initial ordeal, and in Nilson and Pritchett’s new series, Scottie and Howie’s business is booming, but the boys are facing government scrutiny, a seemingly endless slew of new creatures to tangle with, and worse yet—visiting in-laws. With that kind of a schedule, The Pound: Ghouls Night Out promises to be another blast of the trademark thrills and humor that made the first series a fan favorite. Issue #1 even features the hit Image Comics series Proof’s Agent John “Proof” Prufrock in a guest starring role.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Richard Stark’s Parker series, already revered as novels and graphic novels, raises the stakes with Darwyn Cooke’s new adaptation of The Score—a high-octane heist story that has Parker taking aim on his most audacious task yet—robbing an entire town. In Cooke’s previous graphic novels, the menacing, steely Parker has faced all manner of deadly pitfalls while navigating a career through America’s seedy criminal underworld, but this might be his biggest challenge yet—and arguably Cooke’s best entry yet.

“Honestly, it’s hard for me to be objective here,” said Cooke, “but people tell me this one came together pretty well.”

“As usual, Darwyn is being modest,” said series editor, Scott Dunbier, “each book has just gotten better and better… I have no idea how he’ll top this one!”

The third of five planned adaptations, The Score sees Cooke adapting the original 1964 novel, a beloved crime classic and one of the most highly regarded books in the series. A stylish feast for the eyes and a breakneck, sweat-inducing journey that follows one of the boldest capers ever conceived—from the initial pitch to its final, inevitable conclusion, The Score is a book fans everywhere will be clamoring to get their mitts on.

Richard Stark’s Parker: The Score arrived in comic shops July 11th and was released digitally via Comixology the same day.

Cooke has won numerous awards during his relatively brief career, including six of the prestigious Eisner Awards (Two of which have been for previous Parker books). He is nominated for three Eisner Awards at the forthcoming 2012 ceremony for his work on the Parker: The Martini Edition.

Richard Stark’s Parker: The Score is a 144 page, full-color, hardcover graphic novel.
