The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

While England knew that a draw in their game against Ukraine at Donbass Arena in Donetsk, Ukraine, would be enough to achieve qualification from Group D, the return of Wayne Rooney from suspension and the resulting confidence from the victory over Sweden will have the England team eager to try and secure the top spot with a win.

Although they entered the game as favorites, England had to be alert defensively early on with the Ukraine seemingly intent on putting them on the back foot from the start, dominating both possession and territory in the first 15 minutes.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Ukraine was unable convert this into meaningful attempts on goal, and most of their chances failed to test Joe Hart in the England goal. The best chance of the first half hour actually went against the run of play and fell to England, with Wayne Rooney, evidently rusty from his lack of game time, headed wide just yards out from goal.

The rest of the first half played out fairly unspectacularly and although Rooney’s solitary chance for England proved to be the best opportunity to break the deadlock, there was no doubting that Ukraine was in control of the game and Roy Hodgson had quite a task on his hands if he was to reverse England’s fortunes and push for the top spot in the group.

Hodgson’s team talk seemed to work instantly, with England taking the lead just two minutes into the second half. Steven Gerrard, who had already supplied two assists so far in this tournament, whipped in a dangerous cross, which Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov could not deal with and the ball fell for Rooney to head into an empty net.

With Ukraine looking desperate to equalize and hopefully take a much needed lead, much-maligned centre back, John Terry, came to England’s rescue, acrobatically clearing a ball off of the line after it had beaten Hart. Instant replays seemed to show that the ball had actually completely crossed the line and the Ukrainian team and fans will feel very aggrieved that the scores were not leveled.

The goal certainly seemed to spur on England and Gerrard’s passing began to open up the Ukrainian defense, releasing the likes of Rooney and Ashley Young into space as England looked to double their lead and confirm their position at the top of the group.

The best efforts of the Ukrainians in the dying minutes were unfortunately not enough to bring their team back into the game and they will have to settle for watching the rest of the tournament in their home nation. England, meanwhile, will be thrilled to have topped the group and, as a result, will face Italy in the quarter-finals rather than the more daunting prospect of Spain, who will be the prize for Group D runner-up, France.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Racism in sports leaves an ugly trail through the competition – Toonarians Alex Shaw and Brian Anderson look into this issue within soccer. With the recent allegations made against John Terry of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match between Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, fresh worries have surfaced about the prevalence of racism in soccer.

Things were then made worse by the comments of FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, who denied there was any problem with racism on the pitch and that any incidents of racism could be solved simply by a handshake.

Regardless of the verdict, the Terry case has damaged the reputation of the English game, a league widely known to have very little problem with racism, especially in contrast to some of the other European leagues, who suffer from incidences of racism both on the pitch and from fans at the games.

The soccer scene in England has enjoyed a fairly good reputation since the late ’80s, with cases of racism few and far between – a key factor behind the fact that black, and more recently Asian, players are represented in the Premier League to a higher degree than in any other national league.

While the players will now come under a higher level of scrutiny for their behavior on the pitch, there has been little complaint about the conduct of the fans up and down the country in terms of their attitude towards players of different ethnicities. Furthermore, the appointments of black players Paul Ince, John Barnes, and Sol Campbell as England captains, have been widely well-received and praised by the majority of England fans.

Whilst the same cannot be said of some fans in Europe, with England players Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips both being subjected to racist chants during a game against Spain in Madrid, which even drew the ire of then British prime minister Tony Blair, the England national team, which is usually roughly made up of a 50/50 split of white and black players, has the full backing of their home fans.

Although much of the inclusive attitude in English soccer can be attributed to similar social attitudes in the United Kingdom as a whole, the influence of campaigns such as ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out Of Football’ combat this issue. This initiative was started in 1993 and aimed to encourage inclusion and eradicate discrimination in both the soccer and educational sectors.

Funded by the Football Association, Premier League, and Players Association, the campaign is now in its eighteenth year and has helped make the English league one of the most multicultural and desired places to play in world soccer.

Whilst cases such as Terry’s need to be treated with the utmost seriousness and should they be found guilty of any kind of discriminatory behavior, the harshest appropriate punishment should be handed out, to suggest that racism is a significant problem in English soccer would be to do a disservice to the players and fans, who on the majority, show no racially discriminatory behavior of any sort.

This has even led to soccer becoming a way to try to decrease racism outside of sports, through the ‘Football Unites, Racism Divides’ campaign. Started in 1995, the program looks to bring together communities, where racism still continues to be a problem, by appealing to them through their local clubs stars.

This helps integrate the communities, who see their soccer heroes, both black and white, interacting harmoniously and helps teach them to act similarly.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

It is sad, and sometimes unbelievable, to see that racism and hatred is still shouted both from the crowd and from the players in this day and age. Through the many decades of civil rights movements and the obvious equality of human beings, you would expect this problem to have disappeared with the ages a long time ago. Toonarians Alex Shaw and Brian Anderson look into this issue.

In Italy, Poland, and other European countries, racist behavior towards players and fans in the game of soccer has been around since its beginning in the mid-twentieth century, and the problem continues to steadily grow.

The most recent event of racism in the sport was during a match in Russia between Zenit St. Petersburg and Anzhi Makhachkala. A Zenit fan was photographed offering the captain of Anzhi, Brazilian-born Roberto Carlos, a banana just before the start of the game. Although Zenit announced shortly after that there was going to be a full investigation into the situation, in this day in age, nothing like this should be happening.

According to an anonymous Italian league official that spoke with ABC News, the immigration of non-Italian players to teams in the Series A is “new” to the league. It has been many decades since racism and hooliganism caused widespread problems throughout the United Kingdom and other leagues in Europe. How has this gone unchecked or unpunished?

It is hard to fix a problem that even the president of FIFA does not seem to notice. This past November, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, made headlines all over the world with his comments that downplayed the racism that was happening on the field between players and saying that players involved in such clashes should settle things with a handshake.

These comments were criticized, not only by many officials, but also by players in the English Premier League. Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, whose brother was on the receiving end of a racial slur by Chelsea defender, John Terry, at the beginning of this season, wrote on Twitter how Blatter’s “comments on racism are so condescending, it’s almost laughable.”

Of course, many credible campaigns such as ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’ have shined light on the ongoing problem that has been hidden in the stands for a long time. However, it seems that the damage has already been done to the older generations that are still attending soccer matches. It seems that the only thing that can be done now is educate the youth, the future of the beautiful game of soccer, and hope the racism that now plagues the sport will die out quietly along with the fans that support such beliefs.
