A mob of paparazzi, a star-studded crowd and the pressure of being a top-selling rapper, Kanye West is now trying to convince the world he has the ‘it’-factor when it comes to fashion. High expectations were just a fraction of what was going through Kanye West’s mind on October 1st during his fashion debut at no other place than the Paris Fashion Week.

Ten days after his big breakthrough, critics are still slamming West for a show that has been described as a tasteless spectacle that did in fact make a scene — but failed to impress. The superstar took his blog to thank supporters but also detractors for making him push the boundaries one more time.

Kanye West is known worldwide and praised for his successes as a musician. His latest Album ‘Watch The Thrown’ is a Hip-hop extravaganza co-interpreted by fellow rap Godfather Jay-Z. West has also proven very profitable for tabloids and the media in general, starring in some of the most infamous moments in recent pop culture.

Why would an established hit-maker venture into such a vicious business like fashion, where celebrity status could throw even more shade over the already skeptical critics?

Rewind several Fashion Weeks back to the time where Kanye West started to be a frequent front-row attendee at catwalks. He later debuted as a shoe designer for Louis Vuitton in 2009 and joined Fendi as a V.I.P. intern. He finally put together his zany influences and visionary sense of style and had the creative help of British designers Louise Goldin and Katy Eary for his debut collection.

The ‘crème de la crème’ was in attendance, top-notch editors such as Anna Wintour, Suzy Menkes, Stefano Tonchi, Sally Singer, and Robin Givhan, analyzing every single stitch while rubbing shoulders with the Olsen twins, Tameka Raymond, Jared Leto, Ciara and the hottest mess of them all, Lindsay Lohan.

The color palette used for this collection was predominately beige, white and black but West used blue and red hues to brave the neutrality of the shapes and designs. The tone of the line could be described as a cold and futuristic representation of wearable feminine pieces of clothing.

The strappy heels that swirled around the models ankles and the fur embellishments that seemed to only wrap part of the vests, hinted the price of the items would be as exclusive as the elite that gathered around Kanye West’s creations. Critics pointed out that only celebrities and rich fans would be able to purchase the lavish designs.

Low cuts, side cuts, sequined pants and metallic trappings completed the fashion galore that Kanye West put on for his debut. But did we look past the fact that the clothes were sketched by Kanye West? Did the world judge his latest venture from a skeptical point of view? We can only wonder if our opinion would have been any different if we didn’t know about who’s behind it all.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if Kanye survives the pull of criticism and continues to strive in the midst of adversities.
