The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Fremont Street, located downtown off of Las Vegas Boulevard, was the first paved road of Las Vegas and still holds some of the best attractions off the Las Vegas Strip. Fremont Street consists of the same basics as the strip, including plenty of opportunities for shopping, gambling, eating, drinking, and enjoying your time no matter your interests. The street has been featured in movies throughout history, allowing tourists to see the Vegas they have seen through the TV screen come to life.

The Plaza, located at the end of Fremont Street, hosted the original Rat Pack show, which featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop. Fans can still enjoy the show in its original place, watching impersonators do the amazing performance the true members are celebrated for. Fremont Street includes more than just this show, however, and is full of people all day long for various attractions.

Fremont Street is best known for the light show that happens nightly upon dusk. The light show takes place throughout the street, and comes from the canopy that covers the shops, casinos, restaurants and bars. The light show happens on the hour, every hour, allowing for the crowd to listen to great music while seeing photos and ideas captured from the specific era in the song. Every era is covered throughout the night.

Another widely enjoyed attraction includes zip lining down part of Fremont Street, over the crowd but under the canopy. Flight Linez provides the service, and opens at noon daily and closes at midnight. Make sure to get there before noon if you want to be the first in line, however, because a line forms quickly.

Even if there is a line, do not be discouraged from enjoying the thrill; the company keeps the line moving rather quickly. After enduring a short time in the line, paying a small fee, signing a waver, and having the workers attach your harness, you are set to go. The employees are amazing both at the start and the finish, including an employee who captures the entire experience and provides photos for purchase. No matter if you go during the day with the sun’s natural light shinning, or if you go at night with the light show lighting your way, there is never a dull moment.

For those of age, a favorite bar, Whiskey Licker, is located outside of the Binion’s Casino at the center of the street. The bar consists of a wide variety of drink options, with names that are funny and inappropriate at the same time. The bar’s service is amazing and creates a fun environment, even when you are sitting outside in Vegas’s hot, summer temperatures. The bar’s environment is very laid back and fun, and centrally located so you can see all the other people on the street. The bar has a pub feel to it with the décor, but is a great place no matter your favorite type of bar or drink.

Schedule time to enjoy the free summer concerts Fremont Street has to offer during the week. The main repeating band, Dirty Pairadice, represents the Rock of Vegas theme, covering the top rock songs from the 80’s era. The concert nicely coordinates with the light show and the DJ, creating a night full of entertainment.
