Both sets feature more than 2 1/2 hours of new bonus footage never-before-released on disc, including a fascinating in-depth exploration of the film with James Cameron, as well as documentary footage produced by National Geographic with James Cameron that brings the world’s leading RMS Titanic experts together to solve the lingering mysteries of why and how the “unsinkable” ship sank.

The sets also boast previously released special features including 30 deleted scenes, over 60 behind-the-scenes featurettes, a look at the groundbreaking visual effects, over 2,000 photos, three commentaries and much, much more. ‘Titanic’ will also be available for the first time ever for digital download.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

“Who is this Gatsby?” This question strings together the narrative of the trailer for the up-coming F Scott Fitzgerald adaption,‘The Great Gatsby’, released earlier this week. Of course, this 2.4 minute splicing of cleverly timed scenes and artfully disjointed dialogue provides no definitive answer to the question that haunts its characters, however, it does give the audience an inkling of the sort of product that Warner Bros. will release come Christmas.

During his film career, Australian director Baz Luhrmann has varied his subject matter in both scope and substance– finding inspiration in the domestic, such as in the 1992 dark comedy ‘Strictly Ballroom’, and in the sweeping epic, typified by his 2001 musical romance ‘Moulin Rouge!’ Nonetheless, throughout his cinematic catalogue, Luhrmann has managed to maintain a strong and very idiosyncratic aesthetic. As a result, it is unsurprising that the director’s style permeates every second of his carefully crafted trailer.

In this movie, Luhrmann will retell the seminal story of Nick Carraway, a young man thrust into the whirl-wind social life of elite, disillusioned, post-war Americans who finds himself intertwined with an illicit, uncontainable romance between two extraordinary people.

The actors operate within a world which is purely Luhrmann in its incredible lushness. While the director, and Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carroway, firmly set the movie in a 1920s New York, there is such a great vivacity to Luhrmann’s touch that he elevates the action above the painstakingly reproduced costumes and architecture into a dramatic space that seems almost unreal.

This feeling of being out of time and space is exacerbated by the use of Jay Z ft. Kanye West’s ‘No Church in the Wild’ and U2′s ‘Love is Blindness’ to score the images that flicker on the screen. The pacing of the clips towards the end of the trailer, interspersed by luxurious, gold-plated credits, lead the final moments of the trailer into a fever-pitch of drama as the narrative approaches incoherency.

Baz Luhrmann has never been known for his cinematic restraint and whoever is responsible for this trailer reproduces the feel of Luhrmann’s movies to a tee.

This being said, it is important to note that Fitzgerald’s own elan comfortably shares the stage with Luhrmann’s artistic tendencies. While the presence of Bollywood Superstar Amitabh Bachchan as conspicuously Jewish lawyer Meyer Wolfsheim seems a bit of a misnomer, it is evident even in the trailer that the rest of the cast has a strong grasp on their roles.

Enormously talented indie darling Carey Mulligan fully encapsulates the essence of flighty Daisy and Leonardio DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby oozes charm while, post-’Spiderman’ Tobey Maguire once again plays the perfect fly on the wall as Nick. Even ‘Animal Kingdom’s’ Joel Edgerton exudes a strong presence as Tom Buchanan despite his lack of screen time.

Quite apart from the on-point casting, it is clear that Luhrmann has maintained some of the most structurally important and viscerally memorable moments of the novel; the scene where Gatsby pulls out his shirts and the disquieting image of Dr T J Eckleberg are both conserved, as is Nick’s third-party narration.

Essentially, it looks like ‘The Great Gatsby’ will keep the shape of the classic novel littering bookshelves of high-school students everywhere, though this silhouette will be re-seen through the lens of one of the most vivid and stylized directors of this film epoch.

And, considering that the trailer’s YouTube viewcount had passed a million views within the first 24 hours of its release, it would seem that the world is eager to have the opportunity to gaze at the characters they’ve always known through these new, powerfully tinted glasses.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The pre-eminent love story takes a futuristic approach as 1821 Comics tackles a literary classic. A tale of star-crossed lovers and family feud explodes across the comic book world in an adaptation that is sure to excite new readers. Written in a modern language style that has an easier flow than old Shakespearian English, the artwork is similarly modern but no less beautiful. The fight scenes are higher flying and more action packed than ever before.

The Special Hard Cover Collector’s Edition is a beautiful solid landscape novel with included artwork and storyboards, while a softcover is also available. This is not only a comic book but a masterful retelling of this epic tale, created by Terry Dougas and Stan Lee himself. With this new interpretation of the classic comes writing by Max Work and artwork by Skan Srisuwan.

The few sample images available on the web are completely representative of the level of detail present on each and every page of this comic book. This comic is available for pre-order through 1821 Comics and is in stores January 25th.

However, to expect that this comic would be a facsimile of the original Shakespearian tragedy would be a mistake. The one disappointment, which can be expected, is that dialogue is much shorter, with some of the famously spoken lines removed for story pacing’s sake.

Additionally, the comic book medium allows for variations in storyline since this takes place in the future where science has cured many current day illnesses. In particular, the plague has no presence within this comic, whereas in the original, it plays a pivotal role within the lives of Romeo and Juliet.

Another difference is the usage of weapons, for which the original story had swords. Various movie adaptations have before parted from the original, in particular the 1996 adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio, which featured a handgun called a Sword 9mm. This comic version of Romeo and Juliet features little usage of bladed weapons and instead uses guns – lots and lots of them. Still, a lot of the combat is done hand to hand with punches and kicks.

Juliet herself is a striking representation of feminine grace and beauty. Her appearance is almost too angelic in quality, all light colors and shapes. By contrast, Romeo is dressed in a darker motif signaling in some ways his own bio-mechanical changes and reflecting a lack of light in his heart. Together they see an opposite equal in one another. Of note is the one line in Old English that Juliet does speak, calling out to Romeo from her balcony.

The Montagues are one half of Verona’s military and are specifically bio-mechanically altered so that their limbs are replaceable if destroyed. They were the first of the military during the war with the outside world to use enhancements to combat regular forces. Montagues are built to last and are hard to fight.

Benvolio is one such character and though he is a peacemaker of sorts, he still fights and is the one injured during the escape from the Capulet ball. On the other hand, the Capulets are genetically altered for superior speed and flexibility. With eerie bright blue eyes and white clothing, these are not your ordinary citizens of Verona either.

Tybalt, for example, appears to be a much more flexible fighter with kicks and punches that showcase fluid movements – even on comic book pages. Additionally, within the House of Capulet there exists the idea that Juliet is pure and that she should continue the Capulet bloodline.

Juliet’s engagement to the Count Paris still has significant meaning and aside from the warring families, remains the driving force that brings Romeo and Juliet together in this comic. Paris himself, in his duel with Romeo during the final moments of the play is a critical character in the storyline for Romeo and Juliet.

His actions greatly affect the life of Romeo and Juliet, placing him at the forefront for the title of most hated antagonist in this re-imagined comic epic. A few pivotal moments of time in this comic were all the difference between life and death as the actions of Count Paris provide a small unfortunate twist at the end.

In a world much like our own, riddled with hatred and strife, the love that was shared between Romeo and Juliet is one of the greatest love stories of all time. No matter how fleeting, their story features the classic themes of light and darkness, of hate versus love. Fate and chance play their part as well in a story where the passage of time literally means the difference between life and death.

Though different than the original or any variant since then, Romeo and Juliet: The War remains an excellent comic and a great read for fans.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The time for deliberation is almost over. The voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have begun mailing out the nomination ballots for the 84th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place on Sunday February 26 and to be hosted by Billy Crystal.

The ballots themselves, which are to be completed by the 5,783 voting members of the Academy, must be returned by January 13 and will be announced on January 24, at which point firm-favourites and critics-choices will learn if their hopes of award-season glory have been warranted or wasted.

Some of those favorites include Meryl Streep and George Clooney, whose roles in “The Iron Lady“ and “The Descendants”, respectively, have already garnered them nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Other actors expected to receive Academy Award nominations based on prior accolades this season include: Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn”, Ryan Gosling for “The Ides of March” – for which, incidentally, Clooney has received a Golden Globe nomination in the directing field -, Leonardo DiCaprio for the biopic “J. Edgar”, and Viola Davis for Dreamworks’ adaptation of “The Help”.

Statistically, the Golden Globes and SAGs have been shown to be the primary indicators of who will achieve success at the Academy Awards. For example, the 2010-11 awards season saw David Fincher’s “The Social Network” compete against Tom Hooper’s “The King’s Speech” in many of the major categories, with Fincher’s film triumphing at the Golden Globes, Hooper’s film triumphing at the SAGs, and each film ultimately walking away with a handful of Academy Awards.

This ceremony is in fact the last in Hollywood’s award season, so if this year’s voting replicates last year’s, it may go down to the wire as to who will indeed succeed in the Academy’s Best Picture and Acting categories. Therefore, while there may be little in the way of surprises awaiting the Hollywood press on January 24 when the nominations are announced, there will be no doubt added anticipation over whether the voters will sway away from favoring the abundance of high-profile biopics making waves this season.

These are namely: “The Iron Lady”, a study of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; “My Week With Marilyn”, a week in the life of Marilyn Monroe; and “J. Edgar”, a study into the FBI director’s personal life and debated sexuality. Each film has already received multiple nominations from other major award bodies, but this may be a case where there are too many releases from the same genre which ultimately cancel each other out.

Aside from their acting nominations at the Golden Globes, none of the films managed to make the final cut into the Hollywood Foreign Press’ Best Motion Picture selection, so there may still be some spots up for grabs in the final Academy Award shortlist.

Whatever happens, it won’t be long until the public finds out.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Django Unchained is the new movie written and soon-to-be directed by Quentin Tarantino set when slavery plagued the South. Right now the movie is in pre-production and is still looking for people to fill the cast. Releasing his most recent film Inglourious Basterds in 2009, Tarantino has been keeping busy with Django for some years now.

With all movies, rumors spread around the Internet like flies on a discarded orange. Django is no exception to this. It is rumored that Will Smith was Tarantino’s first pick for the role of the main character Django, who is a freed slave trying to save his love from the clutches of Calvin Candie, a white plantation owner. Will Smith turned this down.

After some days of searching, the role was finally filled by actor and musician, Jaimie Foxx. His most famous role was playing Ray Charles in the movie Ray, for which he won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. In that same year, he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Collateral.

Other actors who have popped up on the cast list as well. Leonardo DiCaprio might play the evil Candie, and rumors have been spread that Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) will play Dr. King Schultz, the German bounty hunter who helps Django with his rescue/revenge mission.

Tarantino finished the script early in May. It has been reported that it is 166 pages long, which converts into, roughly a 2 hour and 40 minute film. Shortly after being finished, the script leaked. Indiewire.com got a handle on it and describes the script as the most straightforward story that Tarantino has written. In the movie, it does not play around with 2 or 3 story lines like Inglourious Basterds did with Shoshanna and the Basterds. Instead, it has one timeline, one story, in one area of the South.

Tarantino drew from two main influences: the spaghetti western Django by Sergio Corbucci and Sukiyaki Western Django. Corbucci’s film is like a civil rights meets Fist Full Of Dollars movie. A gunslinger enters a town torn between two rivaling sections. One section is run by the KKK, and the other by Mexican bandits. Funny enough, Quentin Tarantino is part of the cast of Sukiyaki Western Django. This film is also closely related to Fist Full Of Dollars because of its gang-related plot.

Still in pre-production anything goes for the new Tarantino flick. With filming starting this fall and released scheduled for December 2012, this is one movie that people will keep their eyes and ears tuned as more information rolls in about the vengeful slave, Django.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The multitalent Jamie Foxx is set to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Tarantino’s newest work which will reportedly reveal the story of a freed slave’s tribulations.

According to US reports, the Oscar-winning actor for his 2005 performance of musician Ray Charles role in Ray, will embody the lead role of an emancipated slave Django who returns to free his wife.

The actor was selected for the role over multiple stars including Idris Elba, Terrence Howard and Chris Tucker. Kerry Washington, who also starred beside Foxx in Ray is in works to play the wife of Foxx’s character. Foxx’s character learns to be a contract killer and ultimately returns to his past plantation to free his wife.

Leonardo DiCaprio is casted as the plantantion’s atrocious owner by the name of Calvin Candie. Additionally, Samuel L. Jackson is set to play a menacing slave named Stephen who fully submits to DiCaprio’s wild character while Christopher Waltz will play a German Bounty hunter who becomes a teacher for Django.

While the film’s title was inspired by Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 western Django, Django Unchained is referred to by Tarantino as “southern”.

In addition to the many actors in connection to the film, Will Smith was the first to be linked to play the role of Django yet it looks as though he turned down the role. This likely could have been in response to the abundant use of the n-word throughout the film’s script.

Nonetheless, with a talented cast set to embody the characters within Tarantino’s intriguing work, Django Unchained is sure to be a film meriting grand appeal and countless viewers.
