Matchbox Twenty is the riveting alternative rock/pop band that has been around for decades. They have yet to let their fans down with an album that does not reach the top of the charts. Two weeks after the Sept. 4 release of Matchbox Twenty’s latest album, “North”, there is no doubt that they are not making an impact yet again.

The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and continues to have great iTunes sales. “North” currently has a 4.5/5 stars rating from the iTunes customers, as well as holding the number twelve spot on the top albums. The first single off “North”, “She’s So Mean” has been constantly played on the radio and after a July release still holds the fifty-eighth spot on the list of iTunes top singles.

Frontman Rob Thomas and his band have been in hiatus for the past decade, but fans are realizing it was worth the wait. The album is a great listen both initially and after a few plays. Their first single, “She’s So Mean,” is not their usual sound, but is still catchy and supported by a great artistic sound that still lets their fans know they are sticking to their irreplaceable sound.

The tone of the entire album holds a feel good vibe, but still includes deep and emotional lyrics. Songs like “Sleeping at the Wheel” and “How Long” are slower-paced songs that catch the listener off guard initially, but in a good way. Rob’s voice is undeniably his own trademark and his band continues to support him. This is specifically expressed in “Waiting on a Train” that holds the expected musical and unique vocal sense the fans are used to.

Over the last ten years, music has changed dramatically for the overall culture and Matchbox Twenty seems to be fully aware of it. Their sound is true to their original top hits, but a few tunes have a twist to them. For example, “Put Your Hands Up” is dramatically influenced by the pop and almost club music that is so popular today. “Our Song” is a little less dramatically pop, but still has a very catchy and current sound to it.

There are many different sounds on the album from pop, rock and alternative rock, but flows through an overall story throughout the tracks. The album tells a great story of life’s occurrences, but each hold their own individuality that Matchbox Twenty is able to fulfill due to the band’s various genre abilities.

Although Matchbox Twenty may seem to pertain towards their loyal fans of the past decades, their music is still timeless allowing new fans and younger fans who may not have known them before to enjoy their sound. The album is a must have for all ages and music lovers.
