The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Businesses and organizations are increasingly turning to AT&T to help them transform into real-time, adaptive enterprises, in which people, processes and assets are always connected. In addition, organizations want greater efficiency for their sales, service and supply chain operations through global location and messaging technology.

AT&T Location Information Services Go Global
AT&T will now offer enhanced global location options for mobile asset management as part of its suite of Location Information Services (LIS). AT&T LIS includes a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) for requesting location information from the network.

The newest AT&T LIS feature, Global Cell-ID, can help optimize routes or schedules in real-time based on cell-ID information from devices in more than 100 countries, even without GPS.

This highly-reliable service can help to improve operational efficiencies, increase customer satisfaction and control costs for global businesses in industries such as field service, fleet management, transportation and manufacturing.

AT&T LIS Global Cell-ID will make application development easier by giving developers access to cost-effective APIs, rather than having each developer build and maintain their own location databases for managing machine-to-machine solutions.

AT&T LIS is designed with subscriber privacy in mind, including requirements for providing clear notice and obtaining appropriate consents for the collection and use of location information.

AT&T Business-Focused Messaging and Location Services Momentum
AT&T is experiencing strong customer demand with its business-focused messaging and location services - Enterprise Paging, Global Smart Messaging Suite and Location Information Services. These solutions provide an affordable way for businesses to communicate with employees, customers and vendors, create richer application experiences and increase visibility into field operations.

In 2011:

AT&T Enterprise Paging, a group messaging and notification solution nearly tripled its number of customers.

AT&T experienced year over year growth of 1,500 percent for AT&T Global Smart Messaging Suite, a web-based application designed for large enterprise messaging and communication (SMS and e-mail).

AT&T has seen rapid growth in AT&T LIS transaction volume and the customer base since its introduction.

“Global enterprises seek scalable, managed location and messaging solutions that can increase visibility into field operations,” said Chris Hill, Vice President, Advanced Mobility Solutions, AT&T Business and Home Solutions. “AT&T LIS extends the API platform for enterprise developers, software vendors or systems integrators to obtain real-time network-initiated location information and return it to the business application – to help increase utilization of critical assets in the field.”

AT&T has received honors for its enterprise mobility solutions such as AT&T LIS. Recently Frost & Sullivan presented AT&T with the 2011 North American Product Line Strategy Award in Mobile Asset Tracking. AT&T will demo these solutions and more at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona at booth 8A80.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

International research commissioned by P2i, the world leader in liquid repellent nano-coating technology, reveals demand for mobile devices to be water-repellent as standard. The results come as more and more consumers put their phones at risk of moisture and corrosion damage as they go about their day-to-day activities.

The research found that many people keep their mobile phones with them for the majority of their average day, whatever they intend to do. The Spanish and British are more likely to take their mobile phones to a pub or café (88 percent and 85 percent respectively) than the French (67 percent), Germans (60 percent) or Americans (56 percent) – although it was Americans (12 percent) who were most likely to spill alcohol on their phones.

Water came top on the spillage stakes with an average 30 per cent of respondents having spilt it on their mobile phone, followed by coffee (13 percent) and tea (8 percent) in second and third places. Surprisingly, men were more likely to have spilled coffee on their phone than women (16 percent and 11 percent respectively).

Commenting on the survey results, Dr. Stephen Coulson, CTO, P2i says: “Mobile phones are not just susceptible to accidental spillages in pubs or cafes. Reflecting the increasing role that they play in our lives, this survey also found that on average phones are taken out in the rain (64 percent); in the snow (59 percent) and even into the shower (8 percent) and sauna (3 percent) – all posing a risk of the phone being exposed to moisture which can cause long term damage.

There is a very real demand for these devices to be able to keep up with thriving lifestyles. Phones are no longer left on the desk in the office but now accompany us everywhere we go.” When it comes to exposing a mobile device to the outdoor elements such as sand and sea, the Spanish (77 percent) and the French (72 percent) are the most likely to take their phones to the beach. Only 47 percent of respondents from the USA take their phones with them to sit beside the sea.

Dr. Coulson adds, “It’s no surprise that on average over half of all of those questioned (51 percent) expect water protection to be included as standard when buying a mobile phone. Without it, users not only need to avoid liquid coming into contact with their phones but have to consider the ‘hidden’ risk of moisture that can cause corrosion, damaging the phone, its components and, often more importantly, the content and data stored on it.”

When asked what applications they would miss the most if their phone stopped working, the UK is clearly a nation of text fanatics, with 63 per cent of respondents citing text messaging over any other function. The findings from the other nations showed that the ability to phone people would be missed the most.

On Booth 2E58, in Hall 2, at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, P2i will be demonstrating its Aridion technology which dramatically increases the reliability of electronic devices by protecting them from water and corrosion damage. Over nine million electronic devices are now protected by Aridion including smartphones, tablets, and hearing aids.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Telefonica announced February 26, the first live experience of the world’s “smartest” 4G network, in the most ambitious technological innovation ever deployed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) (1). The network – the world´s first of its kind in the 2.6Ghz frequency band – provides download speeds of 100 Mbps, between 40-60Mbps on upload, vastly improved indoor coverage and can increase capacity by up to 400% in high density data-traffic areas.

Based on Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio technology, Telefonica’s network is a revolutionary first step toward a real “HetNet” network, which greatly improves mobile coverage by bringing small-cell base stations closer to the customer.

In this deployment conventional radio base stations co-exist with 4G metro cells (small base stations incorporating antennas and radio) working on the same frequency and with no interference. As a strong supporter for Telefonica’s LTE service initiative, Samsung is also presenting the first LTE smart mobile devices for band 7 (2.6Mhz), GALAXY S II LTE smartphone and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE tablet, which can be used on this new high-capacity network.

The most significant feature of Telefonica’s LTE network is its increased capacity – with each cell comfortably supporting 30 people browsing simultaneously with average speed of 30Mbps. Tests conducted on this network show that a 400% increase in capacity can be made available to users compared to a conventional network design, and that significantly higher capacity gains could be delivered with denser metro-network design.

The network supports speeds of up to 10 times those offered by the 3G network, with download speeds of 100Mbps, upload speeds of 40-60 Mbps and with latency times of around 20-25 milliseconds.

“Today the future of mobile networks begins,” said Enrique Blanco, Telefonica’s Chief Technology Officer. “The deployment of LTE that Telefonica has brought to the MWC, together with Alcatel-Lucent, gives us a glimpse of a tomorrow where everyone and everything is seamlessly connected, and in superfast time.

But the challenge ahead is to ensure that all the technologies currently being deployed – 2G, 3G, LTE, WiFi and Fiber – can co-exist to deliver next generation communications. Telefonica’s strategy is to develop intelligent networks that allow these different technologies to co-exist efficiently and cover customers’ growing connectivity needs in markets that are at different stages of development.”

Another key benefit of the advanced feature network is that it utilizes the same frequency for several network layers, allowing for far more efficient use of spectrum. This solution would also reduce network deployment costs by as much as 40%, as the installation of small-cells significantly reduces the amount of construction, installation and configuration work needed.

Additionally, small-cells use less powerful amplification equipment, resulting in energy savings of up to 35% and a guaranteed reduction in environmental impact.

Wim Sweldens, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Wireless Division said: “This close collaboration with Telefonica through our co-creation program is a clear articulation of the future of mobile broadband – rather than merely evolving their current architecture, which was designed for voice and messaging, Telefonica is making fast progress toward building a mobile broadband network designed with the future in mind.

The wireless network of the future needs to be lighter, greener and closer to customers and deliver much higher capacity – that is what lightRadio is all about.”

“Samsung has been actively collaborating with Telefonica for LTE trial services with a variety of device line-up from LTE dongles to MiFi and LTE smartphones across European markets. I am excited to join Telefonica’s breakthrough LTE demonstration with our representative LTE models, GALAXY S II LTE and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE,” said DJ Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing team for Samsung Mobile.

“We are fully committed to supporting Telefonica’s LTE roll-out and hopefully will try to expand our LTE partnerships not only for European markets but also including Latin American markets. Our ambition is to become a number one LTE partner for Telefonica.” Visitors to MWC will be able to experience first-hand the wide range of options generated by this innovative network at the Telefonica stand (Hall 8), where the smallest metro cells in the market and the latest LTE devices from Samsung are being exhibited.

A video wall will demonstrate the capabilities of the network by projecting video filmed live at the congress and delivered via LTE. The Samsung LTE devices will be used for high-definition videoconferences. This will demonstrate for both applications the improvements in speeds of both links for uploads and downloads.

There will be real-time gaming demonstrations as well as augmented reality and hypermedia applications that highlight the latency and versatility of the network.

Web Site: http://www.telefonica.com/saladeprensa

1)Telefonica has not only covered the Fira grounds but also other Barcelona hotspots including the Camp Nou football stadium, the Diagonal 00 tower, and the Ayre and Arts hotels.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

By 2016, nearly four-fifths of 640 million mobile VoIP users will be making calls through apps downloaded on their smartphones, according to a recent report released by Juniper Research. While the mobile market has thus far been largely dominated by Apple iOS devices, Info Tech’s latest Android Market traffic numbers indicate its growth is four times faster than that of the Apple App store, making Android users an even more important target market for app developers.

Due to this overwhelming customer demand, CounterPath Corporation has announced it will be releasing its Bria Android Edition with video for smartphones and Bria Android Tablet Edition with voice, earlier than previously scheduled, and will be offering an advance preview of the softphone applications to attendees of Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain next week.

These standards-based, service agnostic softphones provide an intuitive user interface for making and receiving VoIP calls on Android smartphones and tablets, and in the case of smartphones, also video calls, sending messages and managing presence all over a Wi-Fi or a 3G/4G wireless connection. The applications will become commercially available mid-March.

The Bria Android and Android Tablet Editions are SIP-based softphone applications specifically designed for the Android OS. The Bria app provides Android smartphone and tablet users with a feature-rich application no matter where they go while still benefiting from the multiple advantages of smartphone and tablet devices, creating a truly mobile enterprise communications experience.

Bria Android Edition (for smartphones) and Bria Android Tablet Edition features allow users to:

Talk and send messages from your mobile softphone, turning your smartphone or tablet into your primary communications device. With the Bria softphone application, you can take advantage of lower calling rates offered by mobile VoIP service providers and benefit from the extended productivity features of a mobile device.

Use your Android device anywhere and anytime to connect with your colleagues, prospects, friends or family. Your native address book is automatically integrated into the Bria softphone on your Android smartphone or tablet, making it easy to connect to your contacts. With Bria Android Edition for smartphones, also easily integrate your Gmail, Facebook or other contacts and chat with them all within Bria, eliminating the need to jump back and forth among multiple applications.

Bria Android Edition (for smartphones) also allows users to:

Make video calls and collaborate more easily and effectively from any location. Picture-in-picture view lets you see not only the person you’re calling but also how you appear. Participating in a video call takes communication to a whole new level: you’ll never have to miss another whiteboard diagram again. (Video calling coming soon to Bria Android Tablet Edition.)

“The explosion of smartphones and tablets in the marketplace is driving significant demand for our applications,” said Todd Carothers, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Products, CounterPath. “We are experiencing a shift in user behavior that requires a similar user experience across disparate devices that enables spontaneous voice, video and messaging conversations.

We call this device shifting. Adding video calling to Android smartphones and extending support for Android tablets is an important part of our strategy.” CounterPath will demonstrate the Bria Android Tablet Edition as well as the new video calling feature on Bria Android Edition for smartphones at Mobile World Congress, the mobile industry’s largest exhibition event held annually in Barcelona.

The company will also showcase other solutions based on its desktop, mobile and tablet applications that enable RCS-e and over-the-top deployments. To see the demos and learn more, visit the CounterPath Meeting Room at MWC in Hall 4, Level 6, Room 4.6HS21.
