The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The pilot for the American version of “The Inbetweeners” combines the first and second episode narrative arcs of the immensely popular British TV show of the same name, wraps it in a thick of layer of ‘whatever’ and half bakes it for an hour at 350. The result is fragmented, under-developed, inexplicably paced, and soggy.

It’s not just that the pilot is structurally unsound– the splicing of the episodes together allows for little of the on-screen relationship development that is the backbone of the show– but also, it feels like MTV just doesn’t get it. The 2008-2010 series (and a movie) charts the last school years of a bunch of extremely unfortunate adolescents– pretentious Will, compulsive liar Jay, hopeless romantic Simon and dopey Neil– who navigate the stormy waters of pre-adulthood with impossibly bad luck and massive erections.

What differentiates the British show from other more-semen-than-sense “American Pie” equivalents, are two distinct factors. Firstly, “the Inbetweeners” commits to a whole new level of vulgarity unbeknownst to Stifler or his mom, and, secondly, the original TV series manages to strike a delicate balance between the extreme despair of these kiddies’ misfortunes and the uplifting knowledge that they have each other and many, many years in which to become more successful at life.

The pilot of “The Inbetweeners” 2.0 is not nearly brave enough to be as offensively irreverent as the original (and MTV isn’t allowed to say some of those bad words.) For instance, in the British “Inbetweeners,” the second episode is the one in which Will embarks on a bravado-proving, booze-fueled tirade towards Neil’s ambiguously sexually-oriented dad, wittily labeling him a “bumder” (a scathing portmanteau of the words“bender” and “bum”) and ending the episode with a regrettable accusation of pedophilia. Apparently, that’s the sort of stuff that American audiences object to.

More upsetting, however, is that the soul-wrenching despair aspect of the British show is almost wholly lacking from the US pilot, while the undercurrent of youthful elation is now cloyingly omnipresent. Even the actors are better looking. And, simply put, the show isn’t funny unless it’s very, very sad.

To fans of the British Will Mackenzie and his merry band of would-be sex-offenders, the US version is a travesty. To an “Inbetweeners” newbie, there is nothing to distinguish this particular televised offering from the cartloads of other -“coming of age” to the dulcet tunes of “Grouplove” - schlock that MTV churns out on a regular basis. Indeed, this is just another “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” without the hilarious titular pun.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Los Angeles, U.S.A. — BUZZMEDIA one of the fastest growing digital media companies, has acquired SPIN Media, an iconic brand and pioneer in music journalism for more than 25 years—extending BUZZMEDIA’s commitment to providing the most insightful and authentic coverage of music and culture.

Under the terms of the deal, BUZZMEDIA gains SPIN.com, an industry-leading source of news and features; SPIN’s print magazine; the award-winning SPIN Play app for iPad; and SPIN’s established events business.

“As music consumption continues to grow, there is an enormous demand for deeper context and engagement with thousands of diverse artists,” said Tyler Goldman, CEO of BUZZMEDIA. “SPIN’s category-leading editorial and photographic content provides the added social context that the audience is seeking by identifying, exploring and documenting the trends and scenes that shape music culture. While content is now being consumed across numerous devices, the key for all platforms is the type of great storytelling that SPIN provides.”

SPIN complements BUZZMEDIA’s existing suite of leading music offerings—including Stereogum, Idolator, Hype Machine, Pure Volume, Brooklyn Vegan, AbsolutePunk, Buzznet, Concrete Loop, Gorilla vs. Bear, Pop Matters, Punk News, RCRD LBL, and the recently acquired XLR8R. From a reach standpoint, these properties establish BUZZMEDIA as the fourth largest digital publisher of original music content in the U.S., alongside MTV, Yahoo! Music and AOL Music, according to comScore*.

Adding SPIN builds on this reach and BUZZMEDIA’s unsurpassed coverage of music and the surrounding culture through its in-depth and thoughtful narrative on issues that matter to millennials (18-to 34-year-olds) globally. BUZZMEDIA will continue to invest in this vision by expanding the overall SPIN editorial team and coverage areas in connection with extending digital distribution, so that audiences can better experience, consume and participate in SPIN’s original content.

“As our audience has migrated to digital platforms, so too has SPIN, as evidenced by our growing audience of more than one million digital users and our award-winning iPad app,” said Alan Nichols, CEO of SPIN Media. “This deal greatly accelerates our digital transition, enabling us to not only tap into BUZZMEDIA’s digital audience of 120 million unique monthly visitors, but also its ability to foster original, authentic and insightful voices in a digital world.”

The SPIN acquisition is part of BUZZMEDIA’s ongoing efforts to provide the voices that define popular culture for millions of millennials. BUZZMEDIA is among the top-40 most trafficked online destinations in the U.S. according to comScore, and more than one in four millennials consume content fromBUZZMEDIA digital brands every month.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking), a campaign to promote freedom and respect for human life, will return to Vietnam after two years. It is estimated that 2.5 million people worldwide are currently victims of human trafficking and that more than half of them originate from Asia and the Pacific.

Often, the victims are young. For example Vietnamese men, women, and girls are trafficked for sexual and labor exploitation in other Asian countries like Malaysia and South Korea; they are smuggled into Arab nations, on to Eastern Europe and all the way up to Sweden and the UK while some even go to Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica.

In 2010, the total number of Vietnamese working overseas in 40 countries and territories is estimated to be around 500,000, and most of them work in construction, fishing, agriculture, mining, logging, and manufacturing sectors. Many state-affiliated and private labor export companies force these migrants to sign contracts in languages they do not understand and charge these migrants high fee in excess of those allowed by law which forces them into extreme debt from which they cannot escape.

In both sex trafficking and labor trafficking, debt bondage, confiscation of identity and travel documents, and threats of deportation are commonly utilized to intimidate victims.

Therefore, the MTV campaign in Vietnam includes a nation-wide initiative against human trafficking, featuring a series of events, TV shows, and the very first multi-media exhibition on human trafficking as part of MTV EXIT Youth Sessions. The exhibition will highlight innovative ways of discussing this issue. It will be divided into a series of different experiences, such as video, music, photography, and interactive activities for young people. The flagship event will be a massive live concert at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on May 26, featuring performances by famous Vietnamese singers along with Canadian modern-rock sensation, Simple Plan.

This will be Simple Plan’s first-ever live performance in Vietnam. Simple Plan‘s members have established “The Simple Plan Foundation”- to support a variety of worthycauses, including various cancer charities.

“Over our career, it’s always been very important for us to get involved socially and support causes that are close to our hearts. We started the Simple Plan Foundation with the goal of helping young people in need,” said Chuck Comeau, the drummer of Simple Plan. “Teaming up with MTV EXIT to raise global awareness around the issue of human trafficking is exactly what our mission is all about.

Human trafficking is a horrible crime with devastating consequences for so many young people and their families. We are proud to stand together with MTV EXIT and their partners in the fight against exploitation. We can’t wait to play in Vietnam for the first time and are looking forward to informing our fans on how they can get involved and help out.”

The organizer of the live concert hope it will be successful as MTV EXIT’s 2010 concert tour in Vietnam, where 80,000 Vietnamese music fans attended four concerts across the country, including performances by K-pop band Super Junior.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. – Multifaceted hip-hop recording artist Shalone premieres new music video for “People”, the lead single off mixtape See Me Coming released December of 2011. Directed by Court Dunn and featuring Emilio Rojas, the feel good melodic track brings a refreshing sound to hip-hop. MTV Networks also recently added “It’s Just Music ” by Queens rapper Grafh into rotation on MTV Jams on which Shalone is featured alongside Slaughterhouse’s Joe Budden.

However, getting to MTV was not an easy road. Growing up in one of the most notorious parts of Jamaica, Shalone migrated to the U.S. at the age of 12 and has never lost sight of his vision since. In 2001, he landed on the chorus of “Truth About Me” off Petey Pablo’s debut album The Diary of A Sinner 1st Entry.

He went on to do features with rappers Noreaga, Grafh, Bun B, Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, and Mussolini (Syke) from the Outlaws. In late 2008, Shalone released his first single “Ain’t Like We,” which received over 600 radio spins across the U.S. and had the opportunity to open for T.I., Young Jeezy and Ludacris. In 2011 he released another radio banger, “Liar”, featuring Universal Music songstress Shontelle.

“I’m bringing the freedom of music, bringing that spirit back. That’s what makes me different. Most rappers are too insecure to take a risk. I’ve been everywhere and I’ll always have that reflected in my music,” Shalone says.

Having put himself in a position to make an impact on music this year and beyond, Shalone is back with a new EP entitled “ Selfish.” True to the name, the project will have 7 songs, no features and take listeners from the streets to the club and everywhere in between, truly showcasing Shalone’s artistic range. Look out for “ Selfish” due out this summer.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records artists Imagine Dragons have been tapped by MTV as its PUSH artist of the week for April 16th. Throughout the week, MTV will feature exclusive content including premiering the Las Vegas band’s new video for their current single, “It’s Time,” on Tuesday, April 17th, across all of its television and digital platforms, including MTV’s AMTV, mtvU, MTV Hits and MTV.com.

“It’s Time” is rocketing up the Modern Rock radio chart where it is currently positioned at No. 14. The track is the first single off Imagine Dragons latest EP Continued Silence, which is currently No. 6 on Soundscan’s Alternative New Artist Albums chart.

“Any time I hear music, I also see visuals in my mind,” says Imagine Dragons’ lead singer Dan Reynolds of the video, which was shot on a dry lake bed in Barstow, CA. ”‘It’s Time’ is an emotional song that was written at a very transitional period of my life. I’ve always loved conceptual videos that leave room for the viewer room to interpret it in a way that is most personal to them. That is what we tried to do with this video. The director had a great vision for representing the song’s meaning in a subtle way. We wanted the video to be cinematic and true to the song.” Watch the video here: http://on.mtv.com/HLCBfc

Imagine Dragons — who were recently included in a Billboard magazine feature entitled “The Next Wave” that singled out five “alternative up-and-comers ready to go pop” — are out on the road with The Jezabels throughout April and May.

The April 10th show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom was sold out and the upcoming May 11th show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood is already sold out. In addition, the band will perform at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI, on July 5th and at the Firefly Music Festival onJuly 21st in Dover, DE.

Don’t miss IMAGINE DRAGONS on the road:

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The fourth annual GYT: Get Yourself Tested campaign kicks off National STD Awareness Month (April) with new initiatives on-air, online, and on the ground at college campuses and in more than 5,000 health centers across the nation.

GYT is an ongoing national campaign launched in 2009 as an extension of a longstanding public information partnership between MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation to address the high rates of STDs among those under 25.

It is supported by a broad range of organizations including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Planned Parenthood Federation of America, which reinforce the on-air campaign with on-the-ground promotions conducted with health centers and community organizations across the nation.

“MTV has made a sustained commitment to challenging the stigma that prevents countless young people from getting tested for STDs and HIV,” said Jason Rzepka, Vice President of MTV Public Affairs. “We’re proud that GYT has helped drive notable increases in STD testing, but there’s no finish line in this race, and we will continue to do all we can to help our audience make responsible decisions about their sexual health.”

GYT is a youthful, empowering campaign aimed at reducing the spread of STDs among young people through information; open communication with partners, health care providers, and peers; and testing and treatment as needed. GYT offers a short-hand reference for young people to open up dialogue about STDs and, in particular, the importance of testing.

According to CDC, young people ages 15-24 represent nearly half of all new STDs occurring in the U.S., while representing just 25 percent of the population. Rates of chlamydia, a preventable and treatable STD, are particularly high. Chlamydia often has no symptoms, and when left undiagnosed and untreated can cause serious health consequences, including infertility in women. As a result, CDC recommends annual screening for all sexually active women aged 25 and younger.

“We’re proud to be a part of GYT because of the positive difference it has made on the lives of so many young Americans,” said Gail Bolan, M.D., director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “The facts are clear – STDs are common, and the life-long impact of an untreated STD is real. But, these don’t have to be accepted parts of life. GYT provides the tools young people need to be proactive about their health.”

GYT public service messages air throughout the year on MTV channels with cross promotions with health centers and community organizations.

Extensive information resources – including a dedicated website (www.gytnow.org), which provides basic information about common STDs, talking tips and a zip code locator to find local testing locations – as well as mobile testing locator, GYTNOW (498669) – provide the audience with more information. During April, the campaign scales up its presence by introducing new messaging and outreach. Some elements of this year’s national GYT campaign include:

“Team GYT” — Celebrities recognizable to the GYT audience help carry the GYT message as part of “Team GYT.” Coming from an array of backgrounds, these celebrities are hand-picked to offer a sense of inspiration and personal empowerment. This year, the campaign is pleased to welcome Litefoot, a Native American rap artist, actor and entrepreneur.Litefoot, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, also operates the “Reach the Rez Tour,” an outreach program that promotes positive change among American Indian youth.Litefoot joins the ranks of the existing members of Team GYT including: The Jersey Shore’s Vinny, rap visionary Talib Kweli , celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton , America’s Best Dance Crew’s Jungle Boogie, professional street skateboarder Stevie Williams , head of Thehundreds.com Bobby Hundreds,Paper Twins’ artists Nica and Edgar A. English , aspiring fashion-conscious entrepreneur Allie Bashuk , surf-loving San Franpsycho, San Francisco designer/painter/artist Ube Urban, Levi Maestro of the online show “Maestro Knows,” Buff Monster, designer Han Cholo , and DJ A-Trak. Team GYT will continue to grow throughout the year as new faces are added to the campaign. All will carry the GYT brand out into various aspects of youth culture, encouraging their fans and followers to know their status.

GYT “Party” — GYT has created a new online interactive video experience to encourage conversations about STDs and testing with partners, peers, and health care providers. The video, a simulation of a party scene, includes five conversations among couples, peers and friends, about STDs and testing and is found at http://www.itsyoursexlife.com/gyt/talk/party. The GYT Party is filled with talking tips, an interactive quiz, key information for starting a conversation about STDs and testing and other bonus features.

GYT Nation — GYT is also supported by an extensive on-the-ground outreach effort and is taking GYT to communities across the country. GYT promotional and informational materials, including T-shirts, posters, buttons, brochures, and stickers are being distributed to more than 5,000 health centers and organizations nationwide, including Planned Parenthood’s network of nearly 800 health centers and additional public and private clinics identified by CDC.GYT is also working with state and local health departments the National Coalition of STD Directors, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and the National Assembly of School-Based Health Centers to provide young people with information about the campaign. And, the American College Health Association (ACHA) works with GYT to distribute materials through college health centers.

“When it comes to STDs, many of those at risk don’t know it or assume they would know if they had one,” said Tina Hoff, Senior Vice President and Director of the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Health Communication & Media Partnerships Program. “Through a combination of on-air, online, and on-the-ground messages, GYT is working to increase knowledge and remove the stigma of STD testing.”

During last year’s GYT campaign, Planned Parenthood health centers tested almost 125,000 men and women in April, and Planned Parenthood affiliates held 240 events with 1,250 youth volunteers, reaching 67,000 people. Data collected from 10 Planned Parenthood affiliates show that STD testing has increased significantly since the launch of GYT in 2009.

Among the 10 affiliates, there was a 51 percent increase in patients getting tested in April 2011 as compared to the same time in 2008, prior to the launch of the campaign – suggesting that the campaign helped drive an increase in STD tests.

Nationally, Planned Parenthood reported significant increases in the populations most affected by STDs, including African Americans and people living at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Data is not available for all 80 PPFA affiliates and more than 1000 clinics, colleges and universities, and other partners that also supported the campaign in 2011.

“At Planned Parenthood, we know that affordable testing and treatment, along with education, are the best ways to ensure that young people stay healthy and safe,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards.

“For almost a century, Planned Parenthood has been providing health care information and resources aimed at preventing STDs, and our doors are open to everyone. Getting tested is simply a basic part of staying healthy, and we’re thrilled that the GYT campaign is getting that message out to teens and young people.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Love is Louder movement, a project of The Jed Foundation and MTV created with actress Brittany Snow, launched a new site this week at www.loveislouder.com which features a #loveislouder blog, videos, artwork, and songs created by people around the world who have joined the movement.

Additionally, the campaign announced 2012 plans to help communities and campuses support the emotional health of teenagers and college-age students, as well as address issues like bullying, negative self-image, discrimination, isolation and depression.

“Through Love is Louder, The Jed Foundation is harnessing technology, the media and grassroots efforts to expand the current dialogue on bullying to include not only the negative voices and pressures that cause pain, but the feelings themselves and how to deal with those emotions,” says John MacPhee, Executive Director of The Jed Foundation.

The Love is Louder movement works online, through the media and in communities to strengthen emotional health by building resiliency, creating connectedness, promoting acceptance and empowering others to support their peers. Hundreds of thousands of people have joined the movement online since its launch in 2010 and the new www.loveislouder.com expands that online presence to include:

A #loveislouder blog that explores common emotional issues like feeling mistreated, misunderstood or alone, and provides positive perspectives, coping strategies and resources for learning more and getting help if needed.

Galleries of the thousands of photos, videos, pieces of artwork and songs that have been created by people around the world for the movement.

New video features including a public service announcement starring Brittany Snow, Anna Kendrick, Anna Camp and others, and submissions from the Your Love is Louder Video Festival held in conjunction with the site launch.

Information and tools that help campuses and communities plan events and start discussions that can increase connectedness, build coping skills, empower peers to support each other and encourage people to get help if needed.

Connections to resources for learning more about and getting help for emotional health issues like depression, eating disorders and self-injury.

Other plans for 2012 announced include outreach to help educators and the media better understand and talk about the connection between bullying and emotional distress, research around tools to build connectedness and encourage help-seeking in community and campus settings, speaking events with Brittany Snow and other spokespersons, and the development and testing of technology to enhance resiliency and coping skills.

The Jed Foundation (www.loveislouder.com) is a national nonprofit organization working to reduce the prevalence of emotional distress and the rate of suicide among college and university students.

Over the last 10 years, the organization has launched innovative programs for students, campuses and parents, including the Peabody Award-winning Half of Us campaign with mtvU (www.halfofus.com) that uses the stories of students and high-profile artists to decrease stigma around mental health issues and increase help-seeking behaviors;

ULifeline (www.ulifeline.org), a comprehensive online resource center on emotional health with an anonymous screening tool and campus-specific information for getting help; and a model and portfolio of tools that help colleges and universities create healthier and safer campus communities.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Jagermeister, a brand as deeply rooted in music as it is in mythology and lore, is proud to announce an upcoming tour with headliner Alaskan rock band Portugal. The Man and supporting act, The Lonely Forest. The live shows kick off April 3rd and will be in 26 cities across the nation.

Jagermeister, the #1 selling imported liqueur in the United States, has a long history of supporting bands, both from a local level to national amphitheater acts. The brand has spent almost two decades developing artists and has seen many go from obscurity to the top of their fields. John Gourley, lead singer of Portugal. The Man said, “We were planning on taking a short break from the road, but Jagermeister presented an opportunity for us to visit a handful of cities that we have not been to in ages, so we jumped at the chance to play these shows.”

Last year, Atlantic Records artist Portugal. The Man released In The Mountain In The Cloud, the sixth album in six years from the Wasilla, AK-via-Portland, OR-based band. The critically-acclaimed album garnered inclusion in several notable “Best of 2011″ lists, including MTV, Huffington Post, and KCRW. Produced by John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A.) with co-production from Portugal.

The Man lead singer/guitarist/songwriter John Gourley as well as longtime band producer Casey Bates and mixed by Grammy Award winner Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Jeff Buckley), In The Mountain In The Cloud marks the first recording to truly harness the band’s exhilarating live show. From the dramatic “Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now)” to the sprawling vision of “Sleep Forever,” the album captures a truly distinctive band evolving in real time, revealing their singular sonic vision in its purest and most powerful form thus far.

The Lonely Forest, an American indie rock band discovered and signed by Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie, who launched their debut album Arrows for his imprint label Trans via Atlantic Records, will serve as the supporting act.

Tickets will be on pre-sale starting Monday, January 23rd at www.portugaltheman.com and on sale to the public beginning Friday, January 27th.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

MTV’s Video Music Awards, usually abbreviated as the VMAs, has recently announced the nominees for the lively award show. Sometimes called the “Oscars for youth” and owning similarities to the Grammys, the VMAs bestows a simple statue of an astronaut on the moon upon winning artist; the moon man acts as one of the earliest symbols of MTV.

But before an artist can even dream of gripping their own space figurine, a VMA victory will only be a potential achievement with a marked nomination.

A list of potential winners of the music networks coveted honor include the likes of pop artists such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce (all in the run for the “Best Female Video” award) to Cee lo Green who is nominated. Katy Perry, who nabbed a whopping 9 nominations, leads with the highest number of nominations followed by soulful British singer who was named a nominee for 7 awards. Awards up for grabs also include “Best Collaboration”, “Best New Artist” and “Best Rock Video”.

With the first VMA ceremony held in 1984 at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, an expanding group of winners within an array of awards has been rising for some time. In 1984 style icon and entertainer Madonna performed “Like a Virgin” while Cyndi Lauper won the “Best Female Video” award for “Girls just wanna have fun”.

The long-standing award ceremony was and continues to be, home for a multitude of memorable moments such as Michael Jackson’s first VMA performance in 1988 with “Bad”. The VMA awards have even hosted its fair share of fashion faux pas like when Lil Kim showed up to the 1999 VMA award grounds with very little fabric to cover her petite body and with pasties instead to act as attire.

While the ceremony is typically broadcasted live in mid-September, the 2011 MTV VMAs will be held on August 28, 2011 in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. You can find a complete reading of this year’s VMA nominees on MTV’s website. Additionally, voting is now open on the music channel’s site- so go and vote for who you believe deserves their very own moon man.

On an MTV’s interview she talked a little bit about the tour and how everything is going for her: “The shows have been equally amazing. The crowds have been so good each night and that gives you the adrenaline you need to get through the show. It just pumps you up. Every night is a blast.”

The shows have been equally amazing,” Spears said. “The crowds have been so good each night and that gives you the adrenaline you need to get through the show. It just pumps you up. Every night is a blast.”

But before every performance, a pre-show ritual takes place among Britney and the dancers. “We always say a prayer before the show; sometimes a really long prayer, sometimes a short prayer. We just do it; we grab each other’s hands and go do it.”

This year has been a great start for the pop start, heading up this amazing Tour and counting with a nomination for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography at the 2011 Video Music Awards.

On Monday the tour added Jersey Shore, to open the concerts. He will be accompanying Spears on six shows on August.

According to Love Our Children USA, bullying is one of the most persistent problems in America’s schools today.

It usually affects to 12-13 years old teenagers and it’s related to a physical or psychic mistreat witch, in some cases, even causes suicide.

The battering topic, unfortunately, is in the top of the list of parent’s and teacher’s worries and all kind of artists are getting involved with it.
50 Cent is one of those artists who, writing, fights against this issue.

Bullying is the main topic of his next novel, titled “Playground”, a semi-autobiographical novel that analyze how a kid becomes a bully.
With his third novel, 50 Cent is willing to discourage bullying and make a guide for his teenage son and other adolescents.

He’s childhood will serve to contextualise a problem that, according to National Institutes of Health, affects to 1 of every 4 kids in the US.
Remember: the release is scheduled in January of 2012. We will se if, as MTV sais, this new book hits the shelves.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

College students’ fantasies of becoming “famous” are quickly becoming a reality. With the rise of social media in our everyday lives, college students are taking advantage of social networking to get their talent recognized. These days, you no longer need a producer or an agent when you have a business, music, graphic design or journalism major in your dormitory hallway.

Our society is accustomed to our celebrities having “connections,” knowing someone notable to help them make it big in the industry. However, what defines “connections” nowadays? It used to be knowing someone that could help you on the road to becoming famous, but now with the rise of Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc … “having connections” is not as exclusive. Now connections to any music sensation or artist are merely a click away on the World Wide Web.

College students and artists with a passion for their talents are benefiting from this. Aspiring artists are realizing that the power of a college network and friends can create opportunities to make a name for themselves. Only the rich becoming famous is a slowly dwindling stereotype due to the possibilities of social media. The ability to download movies, pictures and music for free on the internet is causing controversy with established artists all around, yet everyday musicians, especially college students, are not complaining.

From the dorm room to the studio is an increasingly common story that we hear coming from upcoming artists. These include Asher Roth and Sam Adams, two successful rappers who started from their college dorm room. In 2009, “I love college” was released by Asher Roth; a song about college parties he went to while attending West Chester University in Pennsylvania. After posting his verses and sending a friend request to a producer on Myspace, he quickly became a college sensation. The music video was shot at a fraternity house, put on Youtube and quickly climbed its way to the top of the charts. All Roth needed was his talent and social media to get his voice heard.

Who needs a professional studio, when you have your own microphone and video camera on your laptop for free? Just from one Youtube video, your music can spread like wildfire. MTV studios is noticing this and helping college students take their talent to the next level. Launched in 2007, MTV studios run a college network called MTVU. It is now the largest college network site and channel; broadcasting to over 750 campuses in the United states. With over nine million users MTVU has dedicated their site to college music, videos, contests, shows, and news.

Websites such as FratMusic.com and Collegeplaylists.com are websites for students made by college students themselves. College students are increasingly more interested in partying to music from their own peers, since they are one of the largest demographics in the music industry. Who knows better what they want to listen to than themselves? According to Billboard.com, in everything from country to rap, 2011s hottest artists are all under the age of 21, and what is the most appealing about them? They’re just getting started. College artists create a fan base that not only grows but lasts.

The power of a college network and social media gives college students the tools to make it big on their own. Most college artists are already well known on the web or at parties before they even get to perform live, which is slowly becoming a reality for some artists instead of a fantasy. Younger generations are slowly taking over the music industry, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon with each new artist getting younger and younger. The rise of social media and the effect it has on the music industry makes it easier for artists to be recognized for their talent instead of who they know. Why go hire a manager and producer when all you have to do to start your career is to create a Facebook account?
