The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Telefonica announced February 26, the first live experience of the world’s “smartest” 4G network, in the most ambitious technological innovation ever deployed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) (1). The network – the world´s first of its kind in the 2.6Ghz frequency band – provides download speeds of 100 Mbps, between 40-60Mbps on upload, vastly improved indoor coverage and can increase capacity by up to 400% in high density data-traffic areas.

Based on Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio technology, Telefonica’s network is a revolutionary first step toward a real “HetNet” network, which greatly improves mobile coverage by bringing small-cell base stations closer to the customer.

In this deployment conventional radio base stations co-exist with 4G metro cells (small base stations incorporating antennas and radio) working on the same frequency and with no interference. As a strong supporter for Telefonica’s LTE service initiative, Samsung is also presenting the first LTE smart mobile devices for band 7 (2.6Mhz), GALAXY S II LTE smartphone and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE tablet, which can be used on this new high-capacity network.

The most significant feature of Telefonica’s LTE network is its increased capacity – with each cell comfortably supporting 30 people browsing simultaneously with average speed of 30Mbps. Tests conducted on this network show that a 400% increase in capacity can be made available to users compared to a conventional network design, and that significantly higher capacity gains could be delivered with denser metro-network design.

The network supports speeds of up to 10 times those offered by the 3G network, with download speeds of 100Mbps, upload speeds of 40-60 Mbps and with latency times of around 20-25 milliseconds.

“Today the future of mobile networks begins,” said Enrique Blanco, Telefonica’s Chief Technology Officer. “The deployment of LTE that Telefonica has brought to the MWC, together with Alcatel-Lucent, gives us a glimpse of a tomorrow where everyone and everything is seamlessly connected, and in superfast time.

But the challenge ahead is to ensure that all the technologies currently being deployed – 2G, 3G, LTE, WiFi and Fiber – can co-exist to deliver next generation communications. Telefonica’s strategy is to develop intelligent networks that allow these different technologies to co-exist efficiently and cover customers’ growing connectivity needs in markets that are at different stages of development.”

Another key benefit of the advanced feature network is that it utilizes the same frequency for several network layers, allowing for far more efficient use of spectrum. This solution would also reduce network deployment costs by as much as 40%, as the installation of small-cells significantly reduces the amount of construction, installation and configuration work needed.

Additionally, small-cells use less powerful amplification equipment, resulting in energy savings of up to 35% and a guaranteed reduction in environmental impact.

Wim Sweldens, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Wireless Division said: “This close collaboration with Telefonica through our co-creation program is a clear articulation of the future of mobile broadband – rather than merely evolving their current architecture, which was designed for voice and messaging, Telefonica is making fast progress toward building a mobile broadband network designed with the future in mind.

The wireless network of the future needs to be lighter, greener and closer to customers and deliver much higher capacity – that is what lightRadio is all about.”

“Samsung has been actively collaborating with Telefonica for LTE trial services with a variety of device line-up from LTE dongles to MiFi and LTE smartphones across European markets. I am excited to join Telefonica’s breakthrough LTE demonstration with our representative LTE models, GALAXY S II LTE and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE,” said DJ Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing team for Samsung Mobile.

“We are fully committed to supporting Telefonica’s LTE roll-out and hopefully will try to expand our LTE partnerships not only for European markets but also including Latin American markets. Our ambition is to become a number one LTE partner for Telefonica.” Visitors to MWC will be able to experience first-hand the wide range of options generated by this innovative network at the Telefonica stand (Hall 8), where the smallest metro cells in the market and the latest LTE devices from Samsung are being exhibited.

A video wall will demonstrate the capabilities of the network by projecting video filmed live at the congress and delivered via LTE. The Samsung LTE devices will be used for high-definition videoconferences. This will demonstrate for both applications the improvements in speeds of both links for uploads and downloads.

There will be real-time gaming demonstrations as well as augmented reality and hypermedia applications that highlight the latency and versatility of the network.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Exent’s vision of enabling anytime, anywhere game play took another step forward today as the company unveiled the first and only all–you-can-play subscription service for tablets offering unlimited game play of dozens of the hottest games on Android, including Fruit Ninja, Baseball Superstars, and T-Racer HD.

With this launch, Exent’s GameTanium service will now extend across all of the leading consumer electronics platforms – PCs, smartphones, TVs and tablets.

Coming off a 2011 holiday season that witnessed consumers purchasing tablets at a torrid pace, the recent exponential growth in sales promises to spur the consumption of games, which numerous studies indicate are the number one activity on tablet devices. GameTanium Mobile capitalizes on this new demand by providing consumers an easy one-stop shop for filling up their tablets with only the latest and best graphically rich games available on the market.

With mobile game play continuing its dramatic growth curve, GameTanium now offers operators the ability to leverage Exent’s world leading Games on Demand service on the two mobile platforms their consumers want most.

Exent powers the Games on Demand offerings for the world’s leading service providers. With its suite of platform enablement options – from PC to TV to smartphone to tablets – Exent’s Built with GameTanium services give operators an incredibly “sticky” value-added service that increases average revenue per user (ARPU), strengthens brand loyalty and retention and can be merchandised in virtually limitless ways.

Combining GameTanium’s content and programming expertise with customizable elements ranging from a brandable UI to pricing and packaging, the service provides carriers with the industry’s most turnkey Games on Demand solution on the market.

For game publishers, GameTanium offers a rich channel for delivering their games across multiple platforms, increasing the life of games and royalties that games earn. GameTanium’s exclusive catalog and merchandising expertise also enables premium pricing by elevating superior games above the overwhelming population of game demos, spam, broken apps and just plain boring games offered in the Android Market.

“The GameTanium tablet offering is yet another step in our anytime, anywhere game play vision,” says Zvi Levgoren, CEO at Exent. ”We now offer our world-leading Games on Demand service across all of the platforms necessary to enable games to be played wherever, whenever and however consumers want to play them.

As a result, the service represents a great opportunity for carriers to engage their customers on a more meaningful and ultimately, more profitable level and for game publishers to drive their games more deeply into players’ lives.” The GameTanium tablet service is available for Android tablets for a low monthly fee. Users can start their free three-day trial of the service by visiting http://m.gametanium.com/tablet.html from their Android device.

Operators and OEM’s can try the new GameTanium tablet along with mobile and TV services by visiting Exent at the Israel Mobile & Communications Association Pavilion (Hall 6 C50) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 27 through March 1. Android publishers and developers can also learn more about adding their apps to the service by visiting Exent at the show or by visiting http://exent.com/market-solutions/opportunity-for-publishers.html.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

By 2016, nearly four-fifths of 640 million mobile VoIP users will be making calls through apps downloaded on their smartphones, according to a recent report released by Juniper Research. While the mobile market has thus far been largely dominated by Apple iOS devices, Info Tech’s latest Android Market traffic numbers indicate its growth is four times faster than that of the Apple App store, making Android users an even more important target market for app developers.

Due to this overwhelming customer demand, CounterPath Corporation has announced it will be releasing its Bria Android Edition with video for smartphones and Bria Android Tablet Edition with voice, earlier than previously scheduled, and will be offering an advance preview of the softphone applications to attendees of Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain next week.

These standards-based, service agnostic softphones provide an intuitive user interface for making and receiving VoIP calls on Android smartphones and tablets, and in the case of smartphones, also video calls, sending messages and managing presence all over a Wi-Fi or a 3G/4G wireless connection. The applications will become commercially available mid-March.

The Bria Android and Android Tablet Editions are SIP-based softphone applications specifically designed for the Android OS. The Bria app provides Android smartphone and tablet users with a feature-rich application no matter where they go while still benefiting from the multiple advantages of smartphone and tablet devices, creating a truly mobile enterprise communications experience.

Bria Android Edition (for smartphones) and Bria Android Tablet Edition features allow users to:

Talk and send messages from your mobile softphone, turning your smartphone or tablet into your primary communications device. With the Bria softphone application, you can take advantage of lower calling rates offered by mobile VoIP service providers and benefit from the extended productivity features of a mobile device.

Use your Android device anywhere and anytime to connect with your colleagues, prospects, friends or family. Your native address book is automatically integrated into the Bria softphone on your Android smartphone or tablet, making it easy to connect to your contacts. With Bria Android Edition for smartphones, also easily integrate your Gmail, Facebook or other contacts and chat with them all within Bria, eliminating the need to jump back and forth among multiple applications.

Bria Android Edition (for smartphones) also allows users to:

Make video calls and collaborate more easily and effectively from any location. Picture-in-picture view lets you see not only the person you’re calling but also how you appear. Participating in a video call takes communication to a whole new level: you’ll never have to miss another whiteboard diagram again. (Video calling coming soon to Bria Android Tablet Edition.)

“The explosion of smartphones and tablets in the marketplace is driving significant demand for our applications,” said Todd Carothers, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Products, CounterPath. “We are experiencing a shift in user behavior that requires a similar user experience across disparate devices that enables spontaneous voice, video and messaging conversations.

We call this device shifting. Adding video calling to Android smartphones and extending support for Android tablets is an important part of our strategy.” CounterPath will demonstrate the Bria Android Tablet Edition as well as the new video calling feature on Bria Android Edition for smartphones at Mobile World Congress, the mobile industry’s largest exhibition event held annually in Barcelona.

The company will also showcase other solutions based on its desktop, mobile and tablet applications that enable RCS-e and over-the-top deployments. To see the demos and learn more, visit the CounterPath Meeting Room at MWC in Hall 4, Level 6, Room 4.6HS21.
