The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The discussion about the world ending on December 21, 2012 has been going on for years. Many see the date as a turning point for a world that has taken a dark turn during the last few years, hoping for the return towards an idea of a shared society aiming for happiness. Many have thought of a playlist to match the end of the world. Instead Toonari Post, embracing the hope for a bright future, proposes a playlist to enter the new era. A mixture of genres and styles composed of classics and less recognizable songs, the playlist presents tracks which either inspire a feeling of rebirth, or paint the portrait of some of the darkest shades of the current society’s personality.

1- Radio Friendly Unit Shifter – Nirvana

Honest, straightforwardly hard and tender at the same time, this Nirvana track is a celebration of the distorted sounds that accompanied the inner battles of a sensitive soul. By one of the best bands that ever existed, the song is going to burn in the listener’s bones with its crude reality of lyrics and sonority.

2- On a day like this – Elbow

A gentle tune, which is able to awaken kind and nostalgic feelings. A crescendo of instruments’ joy to celebrate the life of a day and the awakening of a mind.

3- Speak in Tongues – Placebo

“We can build a new tomorrow, today” a hopeful message from the British band, who plays with a song that seems to musically follow the personal development of a human being coming from a dark place, until finding hope and strength to build a shared future and better tomorrow.

4- Hunger Strike – Temple of the dog

A motivating song that reminds of the divisions in the world and the duty of responsible participation.; everything expressed by one of the best grunge groups.

5- Californication – Red Hot Chili Peppers

A description of the decadence the world has been able to achieve and the disappointment towards what human beings have been able to choose as ideals in place of real values. Everything in a mystic lullaby exploring reality and metaphysics.

6- Method Act – Touché Amoré

An expression of what the desperation of a too-often superficial and uncaring society can create in an emotional human being, with social constructions having made superficiality and egoism the important values for many. A picture of what disregard can generate.

7- Station to Station – David Bowie

A mystic track, a journey through music and spirit, represented by the peculiar construction of the song. The product of misery and genius meeting, David Bowie surely shows one of the best shades of his musical talent here. It is a very dark track, very emotional and also showing loss of hope. It has more magical and allegoric figures than one can get at the first listen.

8- Times Like These – Foo Fighters

A track talking about new beginnings, the daily ones, the ones that everybody finds once in a while on their path. A wish for reinvention based on love as well as on the strength and courage necessary to be able to start all over again.

9- Gesucht, Gefunden – Neuschnee

A melancholic sound, where piano opens the way for a variety of instruments to join. With a very long introduction, the song keeps its pace to then develop into a richer set of sonority, eventually coming back to the roots. A delicate touch with the taste of an orchestra.

10- Symbol Song – Dredg

A hypnotic hallucination with the idea of jazz that merges directly into progressive rock beats. The beginning of a journey for a man who has to travel the world to complete his inner travel and find himself. The introductory track of a concept album which can only be defined as perfect.
