The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Brisbane, Australia – To celebrate the golden age of gaming and add even more content to Fruit Ninja Kinect, Halfbrick has announced the imminent release of the 8-Bit Cartridge DLC for the XBLA favorite. With a funky chiptunes soundtrack and gigantic pixels everywhere, the classic style of retro games comes alive in the modern motion-controlled masterpiece.

The DLC features the Super Retro Land background, Game Man shadow and Pixel Love blade – not to mention a complete graphical overhaul as Sensei and his beloved fruit receive a serious downgrade. Releasing this Friday, August 31st for 160 Microsoft Points, the 8-Bit Cartridge pack is the first of many more DLC packs planned for Fruit Ninja Kinect throughout the remainder of 2012.

As long-time exhibitors and supporters of the Penny Arcade Expo, Halfbrick staff will be on hand this week at PAX Prime in Seattle (Booth 6115) to demo the 8-Bit Cartridge. The fun doesn’t stop there – Halfbrick is giving away free download codes for the DLC to each and every person who visits*.

Since its initial release as part of the 2011 Summer of Arcade, Fruit Ninja Kinect has been downloaded over 1.5 million times, cementing its place as one of the most popular XBLA games of all time.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Key Biscayne, U.S.A. — Moon Spider Studio’s debut title, Harold, a unique platformer racing puzzle game, will hit consoles and PC next year. In Harold, players guide and protect the titular Harold as he races through a number of beautifully animated, treacherous obstacle courses.

Harold is the first title from Moon Spider Studio. The game puts players in the role of a guardian angel tasked with guiding the title character, Harold, through a series of increasingly complicated courses. Harold’s gangly frame and thick glasses make him a long shot to win any of the races and he will need all the help he can get running, jumping and sliding across multi-tiered levels and against challenging opponents.

Luckily, being an angel comes with some perks; players will be able to manipulate the environment around Harold in a variety of ways, giving him access to a number of different paths and race advantages, while simultaneously sabotaging the course for Harold’s opponents.

“We have a fantastic team here at Moon Spider Studio and all I want to do is make good games,” said Loris Malek, President of the Moon Spider Studio.

“We’ve assembled some of the most talented artists, designers and programmers from inside and outside of the video game industry, each with incredible pedigrees. We’ve been working on Harold for a while now and we can’t wait to finally show our creation to the world.”

The team at Moon Spider features creative talent with incredibly rich backgrounds in film, animation and video games. Many artists have portfolios from their time working at iconic studios like Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Studio Ghibli and more, and helped create memorable animated films including The Iron Giant, Aladdin, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Princess Mononoke.

These talented individuals are utilizing all of their experiences to help make Harold one of the most visually stunning video games ever created.

Harold will be released on consoles and PC in 2013. It will make its public debut at PAX Prime (booth #129) in Seattle, WA August 31-September 2, 2012.

For more information on Harold, check out www.moonspiderstudio.com, follow the game on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook.

“Battlefield 3 Premium Edition” is the re-release of “Battlefield 3″ with all the gears and whistles. The Premium Edition includes all past expansions to the game as well as the premium pass, which allows the player to download the future expansions that have been announced for the game.

“Tekken Tag Tournament 2″ is Tekken’s way of making a glorified return. With over 50 playable characters, new customizable characters, dozens of levels, and new gameplay features including pair play, retro-arcade tournament battles, and many online features, “Tekken Tag Tournament 2″ is looking to make a comeback to being one of the top fighting games.

“Kirby’s Dream Collector’s Special Edition” is something Nintendo is coming out with for both old and new Kirby fans. This collector’s edition includes six classic Kirby games (Kirby’s Dream Land, Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby’s Dream Land 2, Kirby Super Star, Kirby’s Dream Land 3, and Kirby 64). The collection also includes new challenge stages as well as a copy of the Kirby 20th Anniversary Soundtrack CD.

“Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collection” is a must have for the diehard Street Fighter collector. Though this massive Street Fighter collection will have an asking price of $150, it is a must have for the Street Fighter Collector.

“Borderlands 2″ is the highly anticipated sequel to the smash hit “Borderlands.” With “Borderlands 2″, the game offers new classes to choose from, new lands to explore, a new weapon system including new types of weapons and defensive tools, and, probably the biggest plug from the game, guns. Tons and tons of guns. The game really wants to get across to its audience the massive amounts of different guns that the player is able to choose from just like in the first game (which holds the Guinness world record for most guns available in one video game.)

“Dead or Alive 5″ returns with the same cast of characters in a whole new setting. In “DOA 5″, they put a lot of details into the setting and background as means to express more of a visual spectacle. Along with detailed backgrounds, they added a new feature in the details of the characters, wet texturing. As the players fight it out, their characters will sweat and may battle in wet and raining environments, which will cause the characters to get damp hair, wet skin, and semi-translucent clothing.

RPG

9/18 End of Nations Collector’s Edition (PC)

9/18 Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure (Nintendo Wii, 3DS)

“World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria” is the latest expansion to “World of Warcraft”. This expansion increases the level cap to 90, introduces the monk as a playable class, the Pandaren as the new playable race (also the first neutral race), and new areas to explore.

Sports

9/11 NHL 13 (PS3, Xbox 360)

9/11 NBA Baller Beats (Xbox 360 Kinect)

9/18 F1 2012 (PS3, Xbox 360)

9/18 Harley Pasternak’s Hollywood Trainer (Xbox 360 Kinect)

9/25 FIFA Soccer 13 (PS3 Xbox 360)

The game system has gotten a completely new overhaul with game mechanics and AI for the most realistic hockey experience. The game also features the updated GM Connected, which allows players to bring total customization to their team by swapping and trading team players to their specifications, and the game also includes NHL Moments Live, which allows players to relive some of the biggest moments in NHL history.

Simulation

This expansion includes various features from new costumes, new characters like zombies, witches, werewolves, vampires and other monsters, and new jobs like being a fortune teller.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Konami Digital Entertainment on August 23, 2012 revealed the second playable demo for its stunning PES 2013 title will be released for, Xbox 360 on August 28th and on PlayStation 3 on August 29 with a Windows PC to follow later in September. The new demo showcases the continued evolution of the game, and offers a truly immersive on-pitch experience.

The demo will be available via XboxLIVE Marketplace and PlayStation Network. The free demo will offer 11 fully-licensed teams, and benefits from a raft of subtle but important gameplay improvements since the first demo was released in July.

“We wanted to show our hand early with PES 2013 as, frankly, there is a lot to enjoy,” commented Jon Murphy, European PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “However, we are constantly refining the game and this second demo will show fans that we are always striving for perfection, and they will notice many additions and enhancements that bring PES 2013 even closer to matching the grace, unpredictability and skill that top-level football displays.”

The new demo offers six difficulty settings, and allows the user to play ten-minute matches. Since the first demo, the Tokyo-based PES Productions team has been constantly working to analyse how to improve PES 2013, and the new demo is a perfect example of their quest for football perfection.

The game’s balance between offense and defence has been equalised, and the targeting of passes using the game’s feted manual control system has been improved. Similarly, the trajectory of passes has been refined, as has the blocking by defenders, shot speed, and the ways referees officiate – including the overseeing of offside situations.

Critically, the AI when a team is passing out of a defensive situation into a potential attacking one has been fine-tuned – an essential part of a game like PES 2013, where passing and movement are central to build up play. Lobs and looping shots have also been made harder to effect, following feedback from the initial demo. Anthems for the starting line-ups have also been implemented.

With the focus of PES 2013 firmly on the field, the new demo also invites players to tackle a selected number of training trials. The full version of the game offers an exhaustive training roster wherein users can familiarise themselves with quick one-twos, tackling manual shooting and passing and dynamic first-touch moves to gain space on a closing defender. The demo will feature a number of these tests so users can experience the sheer level of control PES 2013 offers.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Witcher 2: Assassins of kings Enhanced Edition for Xbox 360 is now available in Japan. Japanese players can play the game with a cinematic localization on their home entertainment system from Microsoft. The title is expected to be one of the largest Western hits on this market.

“Japan is perceived as a market ruled by local productions. Western brands need a lot of time to build a strong position there. The first feedback that we got shows that The Witcher 2 established a solid foothold and our first steps on this market are very promising for the future. I think that for some, The Witcher 2 will be perceived as another great example of the Polish culture, such as Chopin, whose music is very popular there. We expect that many Xbox 360 owners will buy our game and love what we have prepared for them” – said Adam Kiciński CD Projekt RED’s CEO.

The CD Projekt RED team visited Japan earlier and took part in one of the most popular gameplay shows – Nico Nico. The show normally running for 60 minutes was extended to two hours by the hosts live, when many on-line commentators asked for more gameplay performed by The Witcher 2 dev team member. The last and fourth episode of the gameplay stream will be transmitted this Sunday with one of the devs answering the viewers’ questions via Skype.

Furthermore, Japan’s largest gaming magazine Famitsu gave The Witcher 2 a platinum score award – one of the highest distinctions ever given to a Western production. All four reviewers of the game gave it a 9 out of 10 score.

“We think that all Xbox 360 owners in Japan should be interested in The Witcher 2. The game is unique on this platform and offers exceptional gameplay, that should attract a vast audience here” – commented Mitsutoshi Sakurai, CEO of Spike Chunsoft, The Witcher’s publisher in Japan.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The aerial dogfighting of WWII fast-forwards to 2012 as City Interactive gears up for the release of Dogfight 1942, a fast-paced, air combat game being released digitally for Xbox Live Arcade on September 5, 2012, then for PC and PlayStation Network later this fall. Fans that want a taste of the action on XBLA before committing to war will be able to download the first mission for free at launch.

Dogfight 1942 features three unique game modes — Dogfight, Survival and Campaign — each offering plenty of action that is easy to jump into. In designing the game, City Interactive implemented incredibly intuitive controls to reduce the need for lengthy tutorials and allow any level of gamer to get up and running.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Elite Systems, the long established UK based developer and electronic publisher of games for portable, mobile and other devices has confirmed that its second Xbox Live Indie Game, Jet Set Willy 360 has passed ‘peer review’ and has been scheduled for release during the weekend of August 24, 2012. The game will also be released for Windows Phone at that time.

Jet Set Willy for the ZX Spectrum (an 8-bit personal home computer released in the UK in 1982 by Sinclair Research Ltd, which sold in excess of 5 million units worldwide) is one of THE defining games of the 1980s.

Jet Set Willy 360 is the near-100% original ZX Spectrum game, as written by Matthew Smith in 1984 and is being brought to Xbox Live Indie Games as an officially licensed product.

Elite MD, Steve Wilcox noted, “The release of Jet Set Willy 360 as an Xbox Live Indie Game and as a Windows Phone game is the next exciting step in bringing classic ZX Spectrum games to a new audience, via new devices and platforms and in the process restoring some order to the market.

We began doing this some 22 months ago with our ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection Apps for iOS devices and in the intervening period there have been more than 100,000 paid instances. The release of Jet Set Willy 360 follows the positive reception and a successful launch of MANIC MINER 360 as an Xbox Live Indie Game and as a Windows Phone game … it’s expected to be followed by more classic ZX Spectrum Games.”

Jet Set Willy 360 features:

full-screen and bordered portrait play / display modes

pixel filtering on / off option

‘auto-save’, on exiting the game

authentic ‘Spectrum’ sound

infinite lives option

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Berlin, Germany — The 2012 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe) concluded on Wednesday, August 15 with a successful showing and a final attendee count of more than 2100 game professionals. Professionals from all areas of the game industry gathered throughout the three day conference to learn and network.

The keynote roster included industry leaders from Ubisoft Montreal’s Creative Director Alex Hutchinson, to CEO of Wargaming.net Victor Kislyi, to Epic Games senior engine programmer Niklas Smedberg.

These speakers were part of the 100+ European and international speakers, 65+ exhibitors and sponsors, and more than 290 media representatives converging at the leading European conference focusing on game development on PC, social networking websites, consoles and mobile platforms. GDC Europe returns to Cologne, Germany on August 19-21, 2013.

Making its debut at GDC Europe this year was the popular Classic Game Postmortem series, first introduced at the 2011 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. GDC Europe attendees were treated to a rare postmortem for the Nintendo 64 classic GoldenEye 007 from the game’s director Martin Hollis.

Among the many key learning Hollis offered to attendees, he revealed that, although the game was in development for nearly three years, the popular multiplayer mode that made the game an instant classic was developed at the very last minute, and took only one month to build. The legendary first-person shooter proved to be a trailblazer for console shooters like Halo and numerous others.

Other popular sessions during the three day conference included a lecture given by Bigpoint’s Jan Richter, who heads design for free-to-play browser titles at the online game developer and publisher.

Richter advised those developing free-to-play games on making a strong first impression with gamers, how to retain them for months and months, and provided attendees with an equation that calculates the “magic line” designers have to cross for their free-to-play games to become huge.

Dan Pinchbeck of thechineseroom, creators of indie hit Dear Esther, talked about the power of imagination and noted that the key to the game’s success was how the abstract and ambiguous first-person exploration game barely gave players any real details about characters and plot, allowing the players’ imaginations to run wild.

The “Ask the Publishers” panel, featuring Matias Myllyrinne of Remedy Games, Careen Yapp of Konami, Zack Karlsson of Capcom, Noah Musler of Microsoft Studios and Dan Sherman of CFC Capital, provided the developer attendees with insights into how top publishers make their decisions.

During the discussion, Karlsson announced Capcom’s publishing deal with Paris-based developer DONTNOD for the upcoming new IP, Remember Me, set to release next May.

In his keynote for the conference’s Game Design track, Alexander Hutchinson, Creative Director of Ubisoft Montreal, took attendees through the process of how his team is maintaining the momentum of the Assassin’s Creed franchise by treating it like a new IP while ensuring it continues to exist within the same rich and consistent universe.

Hutchinson described the three main pillars of Assassin’s Creed III— the new historical setting of the American Revolution, the new, Native American assassin Connor, and the new player fantasies upon which the gameplay is based, such as being a man of the revolution and a naval master and commander.

“We’re very proud that GDC Europe once again exceeded expectations in delivering best-in-class learnings and insight for the European development community thanks to our excellent lineup of international speakers and our diligent advisory board members,” said Meggan Scavio, general manager of Game Developer Conference events.

“This industry is constantly evolving and growing, especially in the mobile and social games realm, and we look forward to returning next year to provide progressive opportunities for learning and networking for developers.”

VIP and All Access pass holders to GDC Europe will also gain access to the video, audio, and presentation recordings at GDC Europe shortly after the conference through the GDC Vault which will host more than 80 lectures, keynotes and panels across five Main Conference tracks (Business, Marketing & Management, Game Design, Production, Programming and Visual Arts) and three Summits (the Independent Games Summit, the Smartphone & Tablet Games Summit and the Social & Online Games Summit).

In addition to the conference content, GDC Europe offered several opportunities for creative exchange and business development, with venues including the GDC Europe Expo Floor, VIP Lounge, and the GDC Europe Business Lounge at gamescom, plus a host of industry parties.
