The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Stratham, U.S.A. – In keeping with its longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and the celebration of eco-conscious living, Timberland today announced its sponsorship of two sustainable festivals this summer – Mountainfilm in Telluride, CO and Wanderlust in Stratton, VT, Copper Mountain, CO, Squaw Valley, CA and Whistler, British Columbia.

Through the brand’s Fade to Green festival platform, which launched at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Timberland celebrates the innovation, self expression and style that cultivate creativity. Much like the arts community, Timberland reaches far beyond commerce to inspire meaningful action around eco-minded practices, effect real change and create a better, more sustainable world.

“These new partnerships with Mountainfilm and Wanderlust provide an exciting opportunity for us to meet and engage with thousands of men and women who share our passion for protecting the outdoors,” said Maile Buker, senior director of marketing for Timberland North America.

“At Timberland we do big and small things everyday to reduce our footprint and be good stewards of the earth. With our like-minded festival partners, we will celebrate eco-conscious innovation, alongside creativity and style, as we connect with consumers from coast-to-coast to work towards our goal of fostering a more sustainable environment.”

Mountainfilm in Telluride

As the Official Footwear Sponsor of Mountainfilm in Telluride, Colorado (May 25-28), Timberland will outfit filmmakers and other VIPs with footwear from the Timberland, Earthkeepers collection. Made with recycled and environmentally-conscious materials, such as Green Rubber outsoles made from 42 percent recycled rubber, leathers sourced from Silver-rated tanneries and PET linings and laces made from recycled plastic bottles, the Earthkeepers collection showcases Timberland’s vast assortment of stylish footwear made with the environment in mind.

Attendees can learn about Timberland’s eco-conscious footwear throughout the festival by visiting the Earthkeepers pop-up kiosk, made from reclaimed and recycled materials, located at the Gondola Plaza on S. Oak Street. While there, visitors can make a pledge to lessen their impact on the environment by incorporating small changes into their everyday routines, and in return have a tree planted in their honor. Each tree promised will go above and beyond the five million trees Timberland has already committed to plant over the next five years.

Over the last thirty years, Mountainfilm has demonstrated a commitment to preserving the environment and continuously collaborates with organizations and sponsors with common environmental goals to continue the “green evolution” of the festival. By switching to hydro-power in 2008, festival organizers reduced their carbon footprint by 100 percent, and as recently as 2011, Mountainfilm eliminated single-use disposable containers from all events for an 80 percent reduction in festival waste.

Wanderlust

As the world’s fastest growing yoga and music festival, Wanderlust is a one of a kind event that creates transformative, mindful experiences set within inspiring natural scenery. Timberland will serve as the Official Greening Partner and Wanderlust Hiking Program Sponsor for the festival phenomenon throughout its cross-country journey, spanning several mountain resort towns this summer including the Stratton Mountain Ski Resort in Vermont (June 21-24); Copper Mountain Resort in Colorado (July 5-8); Squaw Valley in California (July 26-29) and Whistler Resort in British Columbia, Canada, (August 23-26).

Timberland will host a variety of on-site activities at each of the Wanderlust festivals to engage attendees in environmental stewardship. To explore the connections between nature, yoga and music, Wanderlust will offer a series of 90-minute hikes led by outdoor gurus, charismatic yogis and musicians. Amidst the scenic views of valley streams and mountain peaks, Timberland aims to inspire consumers to be heroes for nature during these outdoor adventures. At the Earthkeepers® pop-up kiosk, consumers can also make an environmental pledge to have a tree planted in their honor and learn about the latest eco-minded, stylish footwear from the Earthkeepers® collection.

In an effort further reduce festival waste, a team of 50 Timberland® Earthkeepers® volunteers will be stationed at waste reclamation stations throughout Wanderlust festival grounds to explain the proper separation and disposal of recyclables, waste and compostable materials. For consumers who favor eco-friendly transportation to the festival, Timberland is also sponsoring the Wanderbus, providing festival-goers with bio-diesel bus transportation between Wanderlust and major cities nearby to offset emissions. To learn more, visit the Wanderlustfestival.com event sites.

Satisfy Your Wanderlust Sweepstakes

From May 17 – June 18, 2012, Timberland is helping shoppers satisfy their Wanderlust by offering the chance to win a trip to Wanderlust in Squaw Valley, CA. One lucky winner will receive a five-day, four-night trip for themselves and one guest to Wanderlust California, including hotel accommodations at The Village at Squaw Valley, round trip airfare provided by Southwest Airlines, two four-day Sage passes to festival activities and a $500.00 American Express gift card. To enter, simply visit starting May 17 to register online with proof of purchase.

Those who can’t attend the festivals can join in the action by following The Bootmakers Blog, @Timberland for live updates on Twitter and checking the Timberland Facebook page.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Power plant services represent a growing market that offers steady revenues and solid growth, in contrast with the much more cyclical market for new-build power stations. Fastest growing regions of China, India and ASEAN to account for almost quarter of the market by 2017, but China will not overtake the USA before 2025.

In the developed regions of Europe and North America, the main drivers are ageing power capacities that need replacing and, linked to this, the growing adoption of gas-fired generation.

Key drivers in emerging markets are rapid electricity demand growth, and industry privatization and liberalization which, in turn, push outsourcing of services. In the developed world, meanwhile, utilities struggling with skills shortages are also increasingly relying on outsourced services.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan World Power Plant Services Markets finds that the markets earned revenue of $27.40 billion in 2011 and estimates this to reach$35.41 billion in 2017.

“Global growth in electricity demand is a key driver behind the growth of the power plant services market,” notes Frost & Sullivan Industry Director Harald Thaler. “As electricity demand rises, new generating capacities are added to the system, which in turn, require servicing.”

The services market is, however, forecast to grow somewhat more rapidly than electricity demand. The global correlation, comparing forecast growth for both indicators, is 1.55.

Whilst the services market is forecast to grow by 4.2% between 2010 and 2017, world electricity demand growth will be 2.7% over that same period. Greater outsourcing and the increasing proliferation of gas-fired technology, where reliance on the equipment providers for servicing is high, are major contributory factors.

“Geographically, the balance of power in the power plant services market will gradually shift towards the emerging economies, as they progressively liberalize not only their power but also their gas markets,” remarks Thaler. “Such trends will allow for a much greater penetration of modern gas-fired plants which attract higher outsourced maintenance spend.”

The fastest-growing regions will be the emerging Asian giants of China, India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Their combined share will rise from 18.1% in 2010 to 23.4% in 2017.

Gas turbines account for the largest share of the services market, globally. Their share will expand, albeit slowly, as ongoing coal-fired investments based on increasingly sophisticated supercritical technology fuel growth in emerging economies. This will partly offset the strong growth in gas-fired generation in some other parts of the world.

“Unlike in the market for new-build power plants, where China has been the leading world market for some time, the country’s position in the power plant services market is much more modest,” concludes Thaler. “Frost & Sullivan forecasts that in the lucrative services market, China will not overtake the USA before 2025.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Safeway, a recognized leader in embracing sustainable seafood practices, builds on its leadership by announcing that its Safeway brand skipjack (chunk-light) canned tuna will be responsibly caught using free-school purse-seine methods. The company will transition to the purse-seine method by the end of the year.

Free-school tuna is caught by purse-seiners using traditional methods of spotting schools of fish using radar and sonar, while captains employ powerful binoculars to spot birds attracted by schools of tuna. Joe Ennen, Senior Vice President of Consumer Brands, said the new sourcing policy is an important step in addressing the consumer demand for a more sustainably sourced product without compromising quality.

“We are committed to building a brand portfolio that is innovative and gives consumers what they want. We have always felt that the Safeway brand is the best tasting canned tuna product. Now we’re excited to offer that same superior quality from a source that is more sustainable and eco-friendly,” Ennen said.

Safeway is implementing these new specifications at a time when the tuna fishing industry is finding better ways to address the significant negative ecosystem impacts associated with purse-seine netted tuna fishing, a method that employs fish aggregating devices (FADs).

Safeway’s move to eliminate FAD-caught tuna is part of the effort to make its branded tuna across the shelf stable category more responsibly sourced and to also enhance the company’s “Dolphin Safe” tuna commitments made years ago to Earth Island Institute. Safeway is in the process of instituting additional specifications for responsibly sourced albacore tuna caught on longline vessels with improved fishing techniques. Safeway brand “responsibly caught” tuna is the first brand in North America to make this important move.

Greenpeace has greeted Safeway’s announcement with significant excitement. According to Casson Trenor, Senior Markets Campaigner, “Safeway has just galvanized its hold on pole position within the U.S. retail industry in regard to sustainable seafood. Safeway’s canned skipjack tuna specifications are progressive, comprehensive, and visionary.

They address the dangers of fish-aggregating devices. Greenpeace applauds Safeway for stepping up to the plate and making this powerful and public commitment and looks forward to the company’s forthcoming albacore tuna policy.”

“Sourcing responsibly fished tuna is vital to marine ecosystem health. said Phil Gibson, Safeway’s Group Director of Seafood. “We are pleased to include the canned tuna category in our company’s Comprehensive Sustainable Seafood Policy.”

The specifications will be implemented over the coming year. By establishing this detailed sourcing plan, Safeway will be working with capable suppliers and verification partners who can provide responsibly caught tuna with full supply chain transparency.

“Safeway’s new specifications for canned tuna perfectly complement the work we are already doing together on fresh and frozen seafood. Engaging with existing suppliers to drive improvements over time is emphasized,” noted Matt Owens, Operations Director at FishWise, a California-based NGO specializing in seafood sustainability.

Safeway’s sourcing decision is driven by concerns about over-harvesting of fish and the significant mortality rate of non-target (bycatch) species – such as sea turtles, sharks, and pelagic fish – associated with skipjack fishing using FADs. Fishing tuna without FADs can significantly reduce bycatch levels.

However, verifying that a tuna source is not using FADs requires new protocols and building partnerships with stakeholders in ocean ecology. In the future, Safeway will conduct in-depth research towards bringing to market economically viable, bio-regionally supported pole & line sourced tuna fish.

Safeway has now made clear its intention to work with the fishing industry, governments, Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, NGOs, and scientists to improve the management, sustainability and fairness of the fisheries that Safeway continues to source from.

Safeway is an industry leader in environmental sustainability, ethical business practices and effective community outreach. Safeway upholds an operating philosophy that is rooted in corporate social responsibility focused on four key fundamentals: People, Products, Community, and the Planet.

These fundamentals are “The Heart of Safeway,” bringing together our passion for food and serving our customers with the rapidly developing needs of our communities and our planet.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

This year, the high profile South Korean boy band, Big Bang, will make their very first world tour titled ‘ALIVE TOUR 2012′ through Live Nation, performing in 25 cities throughout 16 countries including Asia, North America, South America, and Europe.

Big Bang was formed by YG Entertainment and debuted in 2006. The group consists of five members: G -Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung, and Seungri. Unlike many other bands, they do not have an eye-catching appearance, but they do have enough talent to be famous and have changed audiences’ attitudes. Each member has impressed audiences with their talents, can sing and rap well, compose music, dance, and act.

Representing Asia-Pacific, Big Bang emerged to the bigger world audience as a nominee for Best Worldwide Act winner of 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) held in Belfast, Northern Ireland. There, apart from Queen, Big Bang was the only winner not from North America.

Live Nation has conducted world tours for Madonna and U2, and Big Bang is the first Asian group with whom they have teamed up. Live Nation is currently a promotional agent for K-pop singers in one to two regions in America and Europe.

Alan Ridgeway, Live Nation’s president, said that he is very happy to work with YG Entertainment and Big Bang to show their work to worldwide K-pop fans. He hoped this world tour would be a good starting point for the Korea branch they established last December, and they expect it to contribute to the K-pop fever expansion.

To prepare for the tour, Laurieann Gibson, who is a well-known director, choreographer, actress, and creative director, will be taking the lead position as director for ‘Alive Tour 2012′. She is known for directing Lady Gaga’s ‘The Monster Ball Tour’, in addition to choreographing “Poker Face”, “Judas”, and “Telephone”. She has also worked with top stars like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, and Katy Perry.

Leroy Bennett will be the stage/lighting designer, and Ken Van Druten will be the sound director. Bennett has previously worked with Madonna, Paul McCartney, and the Eagles, while Druten has worked with Eminem, J-Jay, and Linkin Park. The visual contents producing team, Possible Productions, will also prepare for Big Bang’s world tour.

YG Entertainment expressed in their press release, “We are in the process of preparing the world’s best concert with the best production team to equal the anticipation of the world fans who are waiting for the first concert they will get to meet Big Bang… With the newly released album and the starting of the world tour, you will be able to confirm Big Bang’s maturity and skill.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard expressed support for the Administration’s decision to challenge partisan politics and not bow to Republican pressure to prematurely approve TransCanada’s permit to develop a proposed 1,700-mile pipeline. The Keystone XL Pipeline would transport crude oil and bitumen from Alberta, Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.

“The Administration made the right decision to ensure that a project of this scale is done in a way that is good for both jobs and the environment,” said Gerard. “The White House is facing forces in Congress that have decided to use this project as a litmus test for their commitment to jobs, at the same time as they have blocked the door to every one of the Administration’s job proposals, but the fact is more time is needed to ensure that this project will have the economic and environmental benefits claimed by the developer.”

Proponents of the pipeline estimate that the project will create 13,000 construction jobs, 7,000 manufacturing jobs and allow the U.S. to supply our oil needs with Canada, a long-standing ally instead of unstable nations.

“While the jobs projections are promising, more needs to be done to ensure that North American companies and workers will benefit,” said Gerard. “We’ve seen too many instances where key elements of our nation’s infrastructure were outsourced to foreign producers – such as the $7 billion San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge project that is being built using questionable steel from a state-owned Chinese company.

“That project is a slap in the face to American manufacturing workers at a time when unemployment is still high and U.S. factories are still closing. We have to make sure that if there is going to be a TransCanada pipeline, manufacturing workers will benefit by using as much North American material as possible in its construction.”

The USW says that the State Department’s decision to deny the current permit does not prevent the potential development and deployment of a TransCanada pipeline as the door remains open for the project to be proposed again. In fact, TransCanada, the lead company on the pipeline project, already has said it intends to re-apply for the needed permits.

“When dealing with our nation’s infrastructure, we have to make sure that we tap all of our capacity and ingenuity to build and repair it,” said Gerard. “That means making sure that as many of the component parts – from the pipe to the valves and cement – are made using North American materials.”

Much to the dismay of our idled members at U.S. Steel’s Granite City Steel facility, in 2009 TransCanada sourced most of the pipe from India for the initial stages. At that time, over 2,000 Steelworkers were laid off for lack of orders. To add insult to injury, the Indian pipe destined for the ConocoPhillips/TransCanada pipeline sat right outside the idled steel plant.

“Ensuring a domestic supply chain is our only chance to grow both the American workforce and our critical manufacturing sector,” said Gerard. “When TransCanada presents its new proposal for a pipeline, the USW looks forward to working with the Administration and others to ensure that the eventual project is done in the safest and most economically beneficial way for our members and their communities,” said Gerard.

The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and the service and public sectors.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The North American Lacrosse League has filed suit against two of its former teams and several affiliated individuals in an effort to restore order to League operations.

Anthony R. Caruso, Esq., Attorney from Scarinci Hollenbeck and acting Commissioner for the League, with the assistance of Joel Kreizman, Esq. of the same law firm, filed the complaint in New Jersey State Superior Court, Chancery Division. The defendants listed include Jim Jennings, Brett Vickers and Graham D’Alvia, as well the Charlotte Copperheads and Jacksonville Bullies.

“This action was authorized by the member clubs in good standing with the League and is necessary to preserve the interests and welfare of North American Lacrosse League,” says Mr. Caruso. “The Plaintiff is in control of the League funds, the League website and the League intellectual property, and seeks to stop the continuous dissemination of false information.”

In addition to the filing of several counts against the defendants, the judge has scheduled a mandatory emergency hearing for next week where the Defendants shall be required to appear and defend their actions. The League has requested, among other things, that a restraining order be issued against the Defendants restraining them from engaging in activity which is disruptive to the League.

“This group has been troublesome to our progress for too long,” says Anthony Chase, principal owner of the Kentucky Stickhorses. ”They have personal agendas that don’t coincide with the League agenda of providing exciting pro lacrosse sooner rather than later. The Stickhorses are excited and ready to play.”

Tyler Low and Jason Wellemeyer of PrimeTime Lacrosse, the owner of the Boston team yet to be named, stands by the League. ”We joined this League because of the integrity and professionalism of the people involved, such as acting Commissioner Anthony Caruso and owner Tony Chase,” says Low. Jason Wellemeyer agrees. ”We are confident that the fans will remain loyal to us.”

The League has announced that, due to the recent actions of the Defendants which have necessitated the filing of this lawsuit, there will be a reduced number of scheduled games. But that doesn’t deter Aaron Musselman, principal owner of the Pennsylvania based Shamrocks.

“We are committed to launching this League for the fans and majority of pro players in the US who wish play competitively in new and exciting markets.” In addition to these teams, there are plans for exhibition teams to visit the League venues from the US and abroad. These teams expect to start their season in January.
