The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Culver City, U.S.A. – ”From The Basement,” the highly lauded music series, produced for the first time in 3D, will make its U.S. premiere on 3net – the 24/7 3D network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX this July, followed by the 2D premiere on Crackle, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s multiple-platform video entertainment network, in August. In the UK, Sky 3D and Sky Arts HD will air both the 3D and 2D versions of the new season that includes artists such as The Shins, Foster the People and Feist, among others.

Crackle will feature the first two seasons of the music series via the Crackle site as well as on Android handsets and tablets; Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch; as well as ROKU, PS3, Sony Streaming Player, Sony Blu-Ray, Sony Bravia, Google Chrome, and Xbox Gold members.

The show has previously featured exclusive performances from a diverse selection of musicians including Radiohead, Beck, Iggy and the Stooges, PJ Harvey, Jarvis Cocker, The Raconteurs, Fleet Foxes, The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age and Sonic Youth.

“‘From The Basement’ is the sort of iconic music series that we believe is a perfect fit for our channel,” said Tom Cosgrove, president and CEO, 3net. “The use of cutting-edge 3D production techniques has created the most intimate music experience ever made possible for television, further heightening the viewer’s sense of being directly alongside great artists and wholly immersed in their performances.”

“We consider ‘From The Basement’ to be the definitive show for music fans, and we couldn’t be prouder to feature past and upcoming seasons of the series to our viewers,” said Eric Berger, executive vice president, Digital Networks, Sony Pictures Television. “Nigel, Dilly and their partners have such an affinity for music and such confidence from the artists they work with, and that symbiosis is apparent in what they’re creating on-screen.”

“From The Basement” is the brainchild of creative talents including multi-Grammy winning record producer Nigel Godrich. Long-time Radiohead producer Godrich launched the series originally in 2007 alongside producers Dilly Gent, James Chads and John Woollcombe. Since then, the show has attracted increasing attention for its breadth of vision coupled with its hugely respectful and empathetic presentation of artists playing at the peak of their power.

Produced by this small group of dedicated individuals, the show has always aimed to focus on definitive live performances from some of the most creative and innovative artists of our time.

Godrich said, “My own personal goal is that in the future some of these performances might be seen as the truest representation of the state of these artists’ work, captured in a way that lets their talents speak – without the interference of presenters or audience.”

Hailed by media as “a new breed of music show” and “music TV at its best,” the series will be comprised of six, hour-long installments that are being filmed in Los Angeles and London.

All music in “From The Basement” is produced by Nigel Godrich. Dilly Gent, James Chads, John Woollcombe and Godrich are series producers. “From The Basement” is produced by FTB3 for 3net in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks and Crackle. Sony Pictures Television is distributing the series internationally, outside of the U.K..

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

National Association of Record Industry Professionals (www.NARIP.com) president Tess Taylor leads a delegation of creative music executives from New York to London this week for meetings to create new opportunities for music whose uses contribute to the national economies of the United States, the United Kingdom and world culture.

While in London the group will be featured at four music acquisition sessions for global brand and advertising campaigns, and meet with music organizations and government agencies, including the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the Association of Independent Music (AIM) and the Music Publisher’s Association (MPA).

NARIP brings music supervisors from two multi-national advertising agencies, Ryan Fitch (Music Producer, Saatchi & Saatchi North America) and Jessica Dierauer (Executive Producer of Music and Creative Content, Young & Rubicam), to London to conduct educational programs for the British music industry. These programs create an opportunity to develop relationships and encourage the use of British music in American and global advertising campaigns.

2011 London sessions with Hollywood music supervisors Andrea von Foerster (Grey’s Anatomy, Chronicle) and Chris Mollere (Vampire Diaries) sold out.

Seeking Music For Global Advertising Campaigns:

Fitch and Dierauer seek music for current advertising campaigns. Music publishers, record company executives, personal managers and others will present to them in London for consideration.

“We created a new access point that wasn’t available before,” says Taylor who is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions. “Our sessions have sold out in four cities and yielded multiple placements for participants including in the #1 box office film Chronicle, True Blood, Dexter and Don’t Trust The B—- In Apt. 23!”

Two London Music Supervisor Sessions are SOLD OUT, more dates added:

- Feb 27 with Fitch – JUST ADDED
- Feb 27 with Dierauer – JUST ADDED
- Feb 28 with Dierauer – SOLD OUT
- Feb 28 with Fitch – SOLD OUT

“British music has always enthralled me,” says Fitch. “From Led Zeppelin and the Who to Dubstep, I always try to be aware of new music trends from the Mother Country before they become mainstream here in the States. I look forward to meeting people in London who can help me discover new sounds for my projects!”

“England has always been a musical goldmine,” says Dierauer. “The best bands hail from there, and I always keep my ear open to what’s going on across the pond. Current favorites include Metronomy, PJ Harvey, SBTRKT, Summer Camp, Still Corners and WU LYF.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

‘Attitude’ is a loaded concept. Often, it is sold as something young people need, but older people abhor it. Juliette Lewis is among the few who have been able to use this attitude (a rebellious one here) to advantage. She has garnered much critical acclaim as an actress, and has developed a successful career as a singer in a rock band. After a number of years touring, she is back to acting, this year starring in two films: ‘Foreverland’ and ‘Hick.’

‘Precocious’ is another term that fits Ms. Lewis. At fourteen, she became an emancipated minor, and began acting in television. She appeared in the Dan Akroyd/Kim Basinger comedy, ‘My Stepmother is an Alien’ (1988), and continued gaining respect in film. It was in ‘Cape Fear’ (1991) that received wider and higher recognition: she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Many of her roles have been sympathetic characters, such as that of a vulnerable woman with mental disability in ‘The Other Sister’ (1999). Other roles are more antipathetic. Ms. Lewis has played a few intimidating or ‘hard-edged’ characters in such films as ‘Kalifornia’ (1993), ‘Natural Born Killers’ (1994), and a rocker (singing two PJ Harvey songs) in ‘Strange Days’ (1995). She is not a physically-imposing woman, but she carries such presence that her characters can seduce and scare with a subtle switch.

Her stage presence as a singer is also captivating. There is no timidity, and there is no doubt she is comfortable before a live audience. Her music is strong and energetic; her voice is expressive and can hush with a whisper or belt out the howls. She writes music of wild abandon and rebellion.

Ms. Lewis sang with her band, Juliette and the Licks, between 2004 and 2009; she has since gone solo, with a different backing band. Her latest album, ‘Terra Incognita,’ was released 2009. She has sung songs for other bands, such as The Prodigy, and has had her singing featured in films.

Last year, she appeared in four films and on a television show. Next year, there will be two more films, and she will star in the TV series, ‘The Firm,’ written by John Grisham. She has an impressive list of directors as well: Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino represent some of the many different directions of her films.

She is funny, frightening, controlled and crazy; she is always compelling. Juliette Lewis dominates acting, and she owns the music-stage, but she leaves the impression that she has always been herself. It is an intriguing blend of attitude, accomplishment and artistry many envy. And there is plenty more to come.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

She did it again! PJ Harvey released her eighth album, “Let England Shake” on February 15, 2011 in UK. The title’s simple message is the political situation in England, PJ’s homeland. The topics are as bleak and violent as most of her previous works. However, this time the subjects are soldiers falling in battle and land torn up, both physically and spiritually. Her fourth track, ‘The Words that Maketh Murder’ sings that the soldiers fall like lumps of meat/blown and shot out beyond belief, painting vivid images of today’s battlefields and the masses of dying soldiers on the ground. The rest of her songs continue on the theme of England, war, and the political downfall. The Great War continues to remain a resonant subject for art because it briefly caused the world to step back, afraid to think or even picture what it had done. The trauma from World War I shook England and for that artists continue to portray this epic war in their work. Though the tunes in Harvey’s new album are happy and melodic, the lyrics are filled with agitation, despair, fear, and sadness. The theme is further supported by Harvey singing in her higher register. Overall, the album is depressing but the subjects are factual and bring listeners to light of the events of The Great War in England.

As stated by Pitchfork, when PJ Harvey debuted in the early 90’s, her “gravelly voice, outsized personality, and often disturbing lyrics gave the all-rock world a crucial shot of excitement.” By listening to her eight albums, one thing is clear: she does not like to repeat herself. Throughout her musical career, she has experimented with diverse musical styles from rock to pop to folk. She is also known to change her appearance and mode of dress or hairstyle from album to album, incorporating herself into the album’s artwork, music videos, and live performances. Her major music influence is American musician, singer-songwriter and artist Don Van Vliet, best known by his stage name Captain Beefheart, active from 1964 to 1982.

PJ has received many awards. She had been nominated five times for a Grammy Award. Rolling Stone named her “1992’s Best New Artist” and “Best Singer-Songwriter” as well as “1995’s Artist of the Year.” She was rated the number one female rock artist by Q Magazine in a 2002 reader poll, and was awarded “Outstanding Contribution to Music” in 2011 at NME Awards. There is no doubt in my mind that she would win any awards for her recent album. She speaks her mind through her music, and that is one talent that cannot be silenced! I hope she continues her music career and I hope to hear more from her.
